The Sickly Double Doesn't Want to Be Spoiled - Chapter 40
Chapter 40
Meng Xiyin did not speak.
Her slender eyebrows arched slightly as she looked directly at Meng Yuan, waiting for him to continue.
Meng Yuan was too nervous; he picked up his water glass and took a sip, his hand trembling slightly as he set it back down.
“I can’t stay here anymore,” he said. “But relying on my own ability alone, I can’t achieve a complete disappearance while ensuring I won’t be found.”
He paused, then gave a self-deprecating smile. “Though he might not necessarily come looking for me, I have to be prepared just in case. So, so… Sister, can you help me?”
Meng Xiyin remained expressionless.
She wore a long silk dress that shimmered like pearls under the light. Her long curly hair rested lazily on her shoulders, and her high brow bone cast a shadow over her eyes.
Meng Yuan’s fingers tightened slightly. In this silence, his back was almost soaked with cold sweat.
He was already calculating what other options he had if Meng Xiyin refused him.
“I can,” Meng Xiyin suddenly spoke.
Meng Yuan froze, stunned. He hadn’t expected her to agree so readily; he couldn’t react for a moment.
“Where do you want to go?” Meng Xiyin asked.
Meng Yuan stammered blankly, “Anywhere is fine. I’m not picky.”
Meng Xiyin stared at him.
So Meng Yuan said, “Somewhere far away. The further, the better.”
Meng Xiyin still said nothing.
Meng Yuan had no choice but to be honest: “Preferably, a place with many flowers. It would be even better if I could see the sea.”
“Understood.” Meng Xiyin was finally satisfied.
“When are you leaving?” she asked again.
“Tomorrow at the latest.”
“So soon?” Meng Xiyin was somewhat shocked.
Meng Yuan nodded apologetically: “I’m sorry, I really have no more time.”
“…There’s no need to apologize,” Meng Xiyin said, appearing somewhat uncomfortable. “Don’t worry, it’s not hard to arrange.”
She thought for a moment. “How about this: go back for now. Tomorrow morning at seven, a car will be waiting for you at the entrance of your villa.”
“Come out quietly. No need to pack things, just bring all your medicine. Also, organize all your medical records and bring them along; I will arrange for specialized doctors to take over there.”
Meng Yuan could hardly believe it would go so smoothly. He dithered for a while: “Ah… ah?”
“Ah what?” Meng Xiyin thought this kid was a bit slow. “Hurry back, don’t let anyone notice.”
So Meng Yuan stood up blankly and walked toward the door, then suddenly turned back to see Meng Xiyin stifling a laugh.
“Sister, what are you laughing at?” Meng Yuan asked subconsciously.
Meng Xiyin immediately restrained herself and resumed her cold expression. “Nothing. Which eye saw me laughing?”
Meng Yuan opened his mouth, then closed it.
Clearly, both eyes saw it.
“Um, Sister, there’s something I feel I should tell you,” Meng Yuan said after hesitating.
Meng Xiyin crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. “What is it?”
“It’s… it’s, I…”
“You’re not Meng Yuan?” Meng Xiyin said calmly. “If that’s what you want to say, then I already know.”
Meng Yuan: “…”
Meng Yuan: “???”
Meng Yuan: “!!!!”
“How… how do you…” He stammered so hard he couldn’t form words, rooted to the spot as if struck by lightning.
“Is it hard to guess?” Meng Xiyin shrugged. “I already had a feeling during that first tea party.”
“But why?”
Meng Yuan was nearly frantic.
He felt his existence in this world was full of loopholes. It was one thing for Lu Cong to figure it out after spending time with him, but how could this sister whom he’d only met a few times guess it too?
Weren’t the original owner’s relations with his siblings completely distant?
“Yes, we are indeed not close,” Meng Xiyin said.
Meng Yuan was startled again.
Meng Xiyin smiled. “Has anyone told you that your thoughts are very easy to read?”
Combined with a simple personality, his eyes were large and couldn’t hide any secrets.
Meng Yuan nodded: “…Yes.”
Meng Xiyin’s smile grew more intrigued. “So there really is someone.”
“How did you guess?” Meng Yuan asked urgently. “Was my performance that exaggerated?”
“Actually, it was okay,” Meng Xiyin said. “Because you were afraid of slipping up, you were always very quiet. But as you know, the relationships between us siblings are very bad.”
Meng Yuan blinked. “And… what about it?”
“So they usually call me directly by my name, or at most ‘Big Sister,'” Meng Xiyin said. “They would never call me ‘Jiejie’ (Sister), and that included the original Meng Yuan.”
Meng Yuan: “…”
“Speaking of which, it’s quite a pity,” Meng Xiyin sighed. “Despite having so many younger siblings, the first one to call me Sister was actually you.”
Meng Yuan: “…………”
It was still his fault for being too polite.
But he couldn’t understand: “Then why are you still willing to help me?”
“The final heir of the Meng family must be me,” Meng Xiyin said.
This sentence sounded somewhat abrupt, but she didn’t care, taking two steps closer to Meng Yuan.
“It must be me, it can only be me.” She looked at the simple young man before her. “So as long as you are the Meng family’s child in name, I won’t let others bully you.”
“He didn’t bully me!” Meng Yuan said instinctively.
Meng Xiyin paused. “?”
“Ah, no, no,” Meng Yuan realized and looked down, scratching his cheek. “I didn’t mean that…”
Meng Xiyin frowned. “Don’t be a ‘love brain.’ You have to think clearly; once the decision is made, you can’t regret it.”
“I don’t have a love brain…” Meng Yuan muttered.
He hadn’t even been in a relationship; where would a love brain come from?
“I understand, Sister,” he looked up, resolute. “I won’t regret it.”
…
Back at home, Meng Yuan simply packed his luggage.
While Qin Qing was taking her afternoon nap, he walked all around the house.
Technically, it wasn’t his home, as the owner of the house was Lu Cong, but after living here for over a year, Meng Yuan had long ago considered it his own.
He stood in the living room, feeling the broad swathes of sunlight fall on him, just like the first day he arrived.
That was the first time he knew that such a beautiful house existed in the world, where floor-to-ceiling windows could run along the entire hallway like a wall.
When lying on the sofa, his whole body could be wrapped in sunlight. What he smelled was no longer a damp, musty odor; the air was fragrant and warm.
Meng Yuan loved this sofa so much; every time he lay on it, he felt like rolling around in comfort.
His sister said he didn’t need to bring clothes, so Meng Yuan only packed the necessary medications and organized his medical records into his bag.
That night, he wrote a letter to Lu Cong and Qin Qing respectively.
His writing was actually quite poor, a fact that had been evident since the wedding.
Lu Cong’s expression after reading his wedding speech looking like he was about to faint from anger still made Meng Yuan want to laugh when he thought about it.
So he wrote these two letters over and over again.
Especially the one for Lu Cong; Meng Yuan really didn’t know how to write it.
He actually had quite a lot to say to Lu Cong, but when the moment came, he couldn’t write anything.
He worried that if he wrote too dramatically, Lu Cong would think he was being pretentious; yet he feared if he wrote too plainly, Lu Cong would think he was being perfunctory.
After all, it was a farewell; he couldn’t be perfunctory.
Meng Yuan racked his brain and wrote for a long time.
By the time dawn broke, looking at the final draft he was still unsatisfied with, Meng Yuan wanted to change it again.
But there was no time.
Any later and he would be discovered.
Meng Yuan rubbed his sore eyes and felt that the corners were wet tears.
He actually cried? Meng Yuan was somewhat dazed.
He sat there, looking at his hands, lost in thought for a long time.
Crumpled paper balls filled the table and littered the floor, all traces of his deletions and revisions.
Meng Yuan cleaned up the trash, tidied the bed, and put the two letters into envelopes, writing Lu Cong’s and Qin Qing’s names on them.
He left Lu Cong’s letter directly on his own desk.
6:50 AM.
Meng Yuan quietly walked out of the bedroom.
Qin Qing had a habit of swimming for an hour every morning from 6:30 to 7:30.
This time slot was absolutely safe for Meng Yuan.
He quietly went to Qin Qing’s room and placed the letter on her nightstand. Before leaving, he took one last look at the house.
He was indeed a bit reluctant to leave.
But there was no choice; he wanted to live even more.
…
The weather was very good.
Right at seven o’clock, the morning sun had already pierced through the clouds, dyeing the sky red.
Meng Xiyin’s car was parked nearby in a monitoring blind spot. Meng Yuan saw it after walking a few steps.
He broke into a light jog to catch up. The car door opened automatically; Meng Xiyin sat inside wearing a long black trench coat, her hair pinned up, her expression as cool as ever.
“Get in,” she said.
Meng Yuan looked back at the house once more, then without further delay, got straight into the car.
The car started and slid silently into the increasingly bright daylight.
Meng Yuan sat in the back seat, looking out the window.
The house grew further and smaller, finally disappearing behind a large sycamore tree at the corner.
He withdrew his gaze and leaned back against the seat.
Meng Xiyin handed him a kraft paper envelope. “Your documents are all inside: passport, ID card, bank cards. They are all real and usable.”
Meng Yuan nodded and opened it to take a look; his identity had already been completely renewed by Meng Xiyin.
“We only decided to leave yesterday, so it was too late to apply for a flight route,” Meng Xiyin said. “It just so happens I know someone flying to New Zealand this morning. We’ll take his private jet together.”
“Will it be a problem?” Meng Yuan asked.
“No,” Meng Xiyin said. “This is better. Applying for a route with my identity carries the risk of being tracked. I don’t know that person publicly, so this is the safest way.”
Meng Yuan nodded gratefully. “Really, thank you so much.”
“There’s nothing to thank me for,” Meng Xiyin brushed her hair back nonchalantly. “I happen to be going on a vacation myself.”
“Didn’t you want to see flowers and the sea? I’ve prepared a house for you in Invercargill. There are many flowers there near the sea, and the medical team is already in place.”
She looked at Meng Yuan, her expression turning more serious. “Don’t think too much once we get there. Just treat it as going on a vacation with me.”
Meng Yuan looked into her deep eyes, his nose feeling a bit sour.
“Okay.” He nodded vigorously.
…
At the same time, at the airport.
Lu Cong was waiting anxiously.
For some reason, he felt extremely unsettled.
Lu Cong’s sense of security always came from control.
He needed to ensure that everything happening around him was within his grasp. Even if something drifted slightly off course, he had to ensure he had the ability to return everything to its place.
But today, he felt a subtle loss of control.
This feeling came from nowhere; it was more like a premonition, causing his heart to stir restlessly.
He looked out the window. Today the sun was warm and the sky was clear.
There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky, nor a drop of rain; the possibility of atmospheric pressure affecting his psychology could be ruled out.
Was he really just becoming mentally sensitive lately?
Lu Cong’s brow furrowed tighter.
“Lu Cong!” From a distance, someone called his name.
Lu Cong snapped back to reality and saw Xie Zhu coming out of the exit.
He quickened his pace to meet him. “Hard work. I really troubled you this time. Was the journey smooth?”
“Everything was smooth,” Xie Zhu said with a smile. “No need to be so formal between us.”
Lu Cong forced a smile in response.
Xie Zhu skipped the pleasantries and went straight to the point: “Regarding what you said on the phone, I checked. There are no matches in the global bone marrow registries. But don’t be too discouraged; I’ve already asked other friends to do their best to keep searching.”
Lu Cong nodded. “I’ve really troubled you.”
“It’s fine,” Xie Zhu said. “But if and I say if it really doesn’t work out, I have a friend researching a new therapy for MDS. Perhaps”
Vibrate! Vibrate!
Lu Cong’s phone buzzed, followed immediately by the shrill scream of the ringtone.
Xie Zhu paused.
Lu Cong said apologetically, “I’ll take this call.”
Xie Zhu made a gesture to go ahead.
Lu Cong picked up his phone, subconsciously frowning.
His originally ordinary ringtone sounded exceptionally piercing at this moment, as if it carried some dire news.
Lu Cong’s heart began to beat restlessly again.
He pressed the answer button, and Qin Qing’s panicked sobbing pierced his eardrums through the receiver.
“What do we do! Xiao Yuan… Xiao Yuan is gone!”
In that instant, the subtle premonition that had entangled Lu Cong all morning was completely confirmed.
The earth’s crust seemed to crack open; Lu Cong was dazed for a moment.
His world plummeted into freefall. He had lost control.
