- Chapter 16 - Pressure from the Father-in-Law
Inside the kitchen, the stove fires roared, illuminating the entire space as the range hood hummed steadily. Lin Du stood before the burners, his expression focused and serious.
He skillfully picked up a kitchen knife and began rapidly dicing green onions, ginger, and garlic on the cutting board. The knife rose and fell in a brisk rhythm, and the finely chopped ingredients landed neatly into a side dish.
Just one look at those calloused hands told the story.
Getting hit by him would definitely hurt.
Beside him, Song Shidu followed suit by heating oil in a pan, busying himself with helping prepare the meal.
From time to time, Song Shidu glanced toward Jiang Ningxun with a look of pure grievance that seemed to say: “Why did you not tell me he was coming?”
Wrapped in a quilt, Jiang Ningxun threw up his hands helplessly: “It was not my fault; Dad took control of my phone the moment he arrived. Do not worry, my dad is easy to deal with. Just act natural.”
Fortunately, Song Shidu was an old hand in the kitchen himself, so he did not lose points when it came to cooking. Suddenly, Lin Du spoke up: “Have you marked him yet?”
Song Shidu jolted and responded: “No!”
Jiang Ningxun chimed in from the side to explain, “Dad, I only recently began differentiating. Even if Shidu wanted to mark me, he could not. We have to wait a while.”
“Oh?” Lin Du looked up. “Meaning, you want him to mark you, and he wants to mark you, too.”
Cold sweat instantly broke out on both of them.
Jiang Ningxun covered his mouth tightly, fearing his shrewd father would trick them into saying more.
Lin Du finished the blood-replenishing chicken soup and wiped his hands in silence. Seeing this, Song Shidu took the hint and brought the soup to the table.
This eerie meal finally commenced.
Song Shidu sat upright and rigid, not yet touching his chopsticks.
Lin Du methodically served food to Jiang Ningxun, piling dishes into his bowl until it looked like a mountain of greens. Only then did he speak: “Eat more. You are so thin.”
Jiang Ningxun: ?
Thin? He had been raised by Song Shidu for a month and had gained several pounds!
In Lin Du’s eyes, however, if a son was even slightly thin, it meant he was being mistreated.
Hearing this, Song Shidu looked at Jiang Ningxun seriously and began some self-reflection. How could he be getting thinner under my care? I definitely need to feed him more.
Jiang Ningxun: I have truly gained weight! Any more and I will get stuck in the doorway!
Song Shidu picked up his chopsticks, intending to place a piece of chicken in Jiang Ningxun’s bowl. Unfortunately, the mountain of food was stacked so high that if he placed it on top, it would surely collapse. For a moment, he was stuck with the chicken mid-air, unable to put it down or take it back, feeling quite awkward.
At that moment, Jiang Ningxun leaned forward and snatched the chicken with his mouth, giving a thumbs up: “Mmm, it is delicious.”
The son had personally served up a dose of public display of affection right in front of the father.
Lin Du looked left, then right.
A grown son cannot be kept at home. He had seen long ago that this boy Song Shidu was not simple, and he feared his foolish son would fall for a trick and end up helping the person who sold him count the money.
But now, it was not a matter of being sold; he had been outright abducted.
From the moment he entered the door, Lin Du had been observing. Song Shidu had not made a single mistake, and that was exactly what was most terrifying.
The boy was too much of a mastermind.
Lin Du took a sip of water, his words carrying a warning tone: “Now that Ningxun has become an Omega, his constitution is too weak. Song Shidu, you do not need to put him first in everything, but you must do your best to protect him. Do you understand?”
Song Shidu nodded repeatedly in agreement.
“He is simple-minded. When it comes to feelings, he is not as open-minded as his two fathers.” Lin Du stared directly into Song Shidu’s eyes and said, “It is very easy for him to make a foolish choice and give away his whole life. If you find yourself not liking or loving him later on, remember this: do not hide it from him. Ending it and leaving is better than a cold relationship that prevents him from finding another love.”
Jiang Ningxun took offense at being called foolish and silently raised his hand: “Actually, I am not stupid.”
Lin Du shot him a cold look: “The fact that you said that proves you are.”
His attack then shifted to his son. “You should have more of your own opinions in the future. How can you let others lead you around? Whatever Song Shidu says goes. If he were not here, you would not even know how to cook. Are you even ashamed to call yourself my child?”
The strength of the attack left Jiang Ningxun deeply humiliated, his face turning red with steam.
Only Song Shidu was caught up in the words Lin Du had said earlier. After a long silence, he promised: “I will not let that kind of thing happen. Please believe me; I will never fail him in this lifetime.”
“Anyone can say in this lifetime, but no one can see into the future.” Lin Du looked at him: “I do not need you to make some vague vow. I only need you to know that not hurting him is enough.”
The rest of the meal was eaten in a state of trembling under that massive pressure.
Jiang Ningxun was fine, but Song Shidu was not calm at all. He became visibly restrained, constantly scanning the room to see if anything was out of place. Because he cared so much about this dinner, he barely ate a few bites of food.
Jiang Ningxun dragged his quilt over to sit beside him and proactively served him food. “Come on, say ah.”
Song Shidu ate it, glanced at his father-in-law, and then quickly served food back to feed him.
“Pfft, hahaha!” Unexpectedly, Jiang Ningxun lost his composure and laughed. He patted Song Shidu’s shoulder, tears nearly squeezing out. “Do not be like this! Do not be so stiff. Is there a need for us to act?”
He shook Song Shidu’s shoulder to bring him back to his senses: “You will have plenty of chances to meet my dad in the future. Do not be nervous.”
“Ah, oh.” Song Shidu’s ears awkwardly flattened into airplane ears.
Fortunately, Lin Du was not there to suppress the boy. He wiped his mouth and beckoned to Jiang Ningxun: “Come here. I have some things to tell you.”
As Jiang Ningxun left, he kissed Song Shidu on the cheek. “Coming.”
Song Shidu touched his face in a daze.
On the other side, Lin Du walked to the window, looking out at the prosperous view of A City. Without turning his head, he said, “A temporary mark is fine, but be cautious regarding a permanent mark.”
Jiang Ningxun tilted his head: “Why?”
“An Omega only has one chance in a lifetime for a permanent mark. In that moment, you will completely become the person of the Alpha who marks you. If you regret it in the future, you can only have surgery to remove the mark. The price is that you can never be marked again, and it causes great damage to the body.”
Lin Du’s eyes showed no emotion as he said this, but there was a hint of sorrow in his voice.
Jiang Ningxun’s lips parted slightly, but he could not say a word.
He knew a little bit about his father’s secret past.
When Lin Du was eighteen, he had been forcibly marked by a bad person. Afterward, Lin Du went to the hospital to erase all traces, which resulted in him being unable to be marked ever again. From then on, Lin Du became casual about relationships; everything was a fleeting romance, and he would go to a hotel with anyone he liked.
It was only because his family pressured him to marry that Lin Du casually found the other father to marry.
Of course, the other father was not exactly a settled person either.
The two did not love each other, and having been forced together by marriage pressure, they had an unspoken agreement not to interfere in each other’s private lives.
Until one day, Lin Du’s heat arrived and the other father was drunk. By accident, things happened.
They thought the relationship between the two would warm up, but the result was that it dropped to the freezing point.
It seemed the two truly did not like each other.
After Lin Du finished speaking, he looked at Jiang Ningxun earnestly. “Compared to being an Omega or an Alpha, I would rather you were a mediocre Beta.”
He reached out wanting to touch Jiang Ningxun’s hair but pulled back.
In the instant he lowered his hand, Jiang Ningxun caught it and placed it proactively on his own soft hair.
Lin Du rubbed his head, but withdrew it after just a second.
His phone rang. Lin Du looked at the caller, and his brow furrowed slightly.
Jiang Ningxun asked tentatively: “Who is it?”
“Someone who gives money but does not want to break up.”
“Oh.”
Lin Du put on his coat, ready to leave. He turned back for one last instruction: “Protect yourself well.”
“Mm-hmm.”
Jiang Ningxun looked at the silhouette about to walk out the door. He bit his lip but finally spoke up: “You should live a good life with him.”
Lin Du left, leaving behind the words: “Not possible.”
