- Chapter 12 - Being a Guest — Just Playing Around in the Entertainment Industry
He Wang finally snapped out of his trance. For some reason, he could never seem to maintain his mature, steady, and reliable persona whenever he was in front of Song Mingjiao.
In this moment, He Wang felt like an inexperienced boy, stumbling over his words as he said, “Quick, come come in.”
Song Mingjiao tilted his eyes in a polite smile. “Thank you.”
Then, without the slightest hint of hesitation, he stepped into the living room as naturally as if he were entering his own home.
“This is a high-end complex where many celebrities live, so the security staff is very experienced. Sneaky paparazzi can’t escape their eyes. You can rest easy,” He Wang explained as he welcomed Song Mingjiao, attempting to soothe any fears the younger man might have about the press.
He Wang’s home was a massive luxury flat in the city center. Compared to Song Mingjiao’s quiet villa, it felt a bit more lived-in. The living room featured a double-height floor-to-ceiling window, offering a panoramic view of the city landscape from a high altitude.
Song Mingjiao loved this perspective and scenery; he was currently in a very pleasant mood. “Okay, I trust Teacher He.”
Following behind him, He Wang finally managed to adjust his facial expression, forcing himself back into a presentable state. He had to implement a strategy of “differentiation”!
That man surnamed Mo wasn’t even in a public relationship with Song Mingjiao he was just a lover, nothing more! Now that Song Mingjiao had taken the initiative to come find him, he must definitely be interested.
What a joke; as if he couldn’t compete with Mo Qinan!
Unaware of the grimacing, wild thoughts racing through the mind of the man behind him, Song Mingjiao took a self-familiarized turn around the spacious living room before stopping at the kitchen island.
“Teacher He actually knows how to cook?” Song Mingjiao looked around. The kitchen clearly showed signs of being used, unlike some people’s homes where having two bottles of Coke in the fridge counts as being diligent.
He Wang suddenly felt that the culinary skills he had specifically learned for a previous role were finally coming in handy. Consequently, he nonchalantly rattled off a list of dishes.
“I can do Chinese cuisine and Western pastries. Mingjiao, you must be tired after coming all this way. Is there anything you’d like to eat?”
Hearing the last two characters of his name fall from someone else’s lips felt like a sudden novelty to Song Mingjiao; very few people called him that anymore.
“Sure. I’d like sago soup… hmm, or double-skin milk would be fine too.”
Song Mingjiao’s love for desserts was a constant that required no second thought; he reeled off several names effortlessly.
He leaned down slightly, propping himself up with one hand on the counter as he looked at He Wang. His eyes held a pure longing for delicious food that was impossible to refuse.
This included He Wang, of course. Standing inside the kitchen island and being so close to Song Mingjiao, he fought to maintain his composure and said, “No problem at all.”
Song Mingjiao watched curiously as He Wang began to busy himself. As a guest, he felt no guilt watching the host bustle about for his sake. Instead, after seeing the fridge full of ingredients, he asked sincerely:
“Does Teacher He usually like making desserts? Most people don’t seem to keep these kinds of raw materials ready at home.”
He Wang’s stirring hand stiffened for a split second. He certainly couldn’t tell Song Mingjiao that ever since that day in the lounge, he had been like a hidden admirer, secretly observing the schedules of Song Mingjiao and Mo Qinan and had accidentally discovered Song Mingjiao’s preferences.
Ten years of work offstage for one minute on stage.
He had practiced his pastry skills for days just for this moment: to capture Song Mingjiao’s stomach!
“This? It’s preparation for my next role. The character I’m playing has scenes involving this,” He Wang lied with a straight face.
“Wow, how impressive. Teacher He is so dedicated.”
Song Mingjiao gave a very supportive compliment, nearly causing He Wang to lose his composure again; he luckily avoided over-stirring the sago into a mush.
Song Mingjiao thought his words were quite emotionless and formulaic, so he hadn’t expected such a strong reaction from He Wang.
He blinked and asked curiously, “So, was researching the relationship between me and Mo Qinan also part of your preparation for the role?”
Snap.
He Wang felt as if a string in his heart had just broken.
Song Mingjiao’s face still held a smile. He even tilted his head as if he were genuinely puzzled, asking the question in an incredibly casual and sudden manner.
No way… surely no one actually thought he was just messing around all day, eating and drinking without any sensitivity to his surroundings?
Well, that idiot system probably thought so.
“You…”
He Wang wanted to explain, but he didn’t know where to start.
Song Mingjiao sighed with a look of feigned distress. “Teacher He seemed particularly familiar with me from the very first time we met. But haven’t we only known each other for a few days?”
“…Actually, it was back on the awards stage. The camera panned over the audience. Mingjiao, I saw you that day.”
He Wang spun a half-truth. Song Mingjiao had been wearing a mask in the audience that day; at most, He Wang had remembered those eyes.
“Mingjiao, you were there for Mo Qinan that day, weren’t you?”
He Wang hadn’t thought much of it at the time, but looking back, even though he was the one receiving the applause of the entire hall, the person he fell for at first sight had been there for someone else someone completely inferior to him, obscure, useless, and full of flaws.
It was truly irritating!
Song Mingjiao just felt that there was too much drama surrounding a single Star-Sheep Award. Clearly, the starting point for his deployment in this world had been well-chosen; it was certainly good at finding trouble for him.
“Mo Qinan? He was technically an artist under my company before.”
He Wang’s ears had already learned to automatically process and filter information.
Before?
Does that mean he isn’t anymore?
Does that imply that Song Mingjiao doesn’t have anyone else by his side right now?
“It’s my first time running an entertainment company. The relationship between me and Mo Qinan… that sort of thing is common in the industry, right?”
Song Mingjiao bypassed words like “lover” or “couple,” summarizing their relationship simply and leaving infinite room for imagination.
He looked like a sheltered, naive young master who had come out to experience life, carrying a bag of gold and silver just waiting to be swindled. He didn’t look like the typical arrogant, pot-bellied “gold masters” of the industry.
The “Young Master” wrinkled his nose and pouted slightly, his tone carrying a hint of a complaint. “Is everyone in the entertainment industry so unreasonable? I spent so much money on him.”
“Of course not!”
He Wang said without thinking. There were definitely good people like himself. He Wang figured that Song Mingjiao had probably treated a “sponsorship” like a real relationship, which allowed some blind fools to walk all over him.
Upon hearing this, Song Mingjiao immediately snapped out of his dejected state and said excitedly, “I think so too! That’s why I want to go play in the entertainment industry no, I mean, personally scout someone.”
“Teacher He, you’ll help me, won’t you?”
Song Mingjiao looked very excited, leaning even closer to He Wang. His long eyelashes fluttered, and his light-colored pupils looked like gemstones, making it impossible to look away.
“Of course, no problem,” He Wang agreed, but realized a moment too late what he had done.
Wasn’t he just adding more competition for himself?!
Seeing He Wang nod, Song Mingjiao smiled mischievously, as if his scheme had succeeded. “Teacher He, you’re so kind. I’ve never been in front of a camera before, so you’ll have to look after me.”
Song Mingjiao’s soft fingertips landed on He Wang’s upper arm, deliberately avoiding the fabric to make direct contact.
He Wang instantly forgot his lingering hesitation and regret. The spot where Song Mingjiao touched his arm felt as if it were burning.
Right. It was just playing around in the entertainment industry; why should he stop him?
That day, Song Mingjiao naturally got to eat his long-awaited sago soup.
He also lazily occupied the host’s chaise longue to enjoy the view outside before reluctantly saying goodbye when his assistant called.
After he returned, Zhang Xuanzhan found out that the “way” Young Master Song chose to handle that photo was by handling it all the way into He Wang’s home.
Song Mingjiao noticed with some curiosity that his secretary was nearly crumpling the documents in his hand, but since he considered himself a very considerate boss, he didn’t ask.
He was currently chatting with He Wang on his phone. Ever since they exchanged contact info, He Wang had been finding various topics to keep the connection alive.
Song Mingjiao even felt a rare spark of interest to scroll through He Wang’s social feed. He posted almost every day sometimes it was a new pastry, sometimes a photography shot.
Is a Movie King’s life really this rich?
Song Mingjiao scrolled through them all, generously “liking” every single one.
HW: I’ve asked around. There’s a variety show starting production soon that happens to be inviting non-celebrities from various fields. Mingjiao, I think it would suit you quite well. What do you think?
MOON: Will Teacher He be there?
The other side paused for a long time, the “typing…” status appearing and disappearing without a message being sent.
Song Mingjiao yawned, waiting boredly while gesturing for Zhang Xuanzhan to bring him a fresh cup of tea.
HW: You… want me to go on the show with you?
Song Mingjiao replied naturally:
MOON: Of course. After all, I don’t know anyone else in the industry.
HW: But about that trending search incident last time… you don’t mind?
MOON: But wasn’t that just netizens guessing? Does that really matter?
HW: You’re right. It doesn’t matter.
Song Mingjiao felt that He Wang had realized something, though he wasn’t quite sure what.
He looked up at Zhang Xuanzhan and said, “He Wang mentioned some variety show. Find an assistant to arrange it. Oh, and don’t show your face I don’t want him to recognize you.”
Zhang Xuanzhan took a deep breath and then agreed to go make the arrangements.
