The Security Guard Who Won the Heart of the Unattainable Actress - Chapter 39.2
Chapter 39.2
Li Guang paused awkwardly.
Ran Mingyue whispered, “It’s okay.”
She took Li Guang’s cup and took a sip. This was indeed a flavor Ran Mingyue wouldn’t usually drink—it was too high in calories—but it was surprisingly good.
Li Guang didn’t realize how intimate the act of sharing was between her and Ran Mingyue, and she asked, “Didn’t you say you couldn’t drink things too sweet?”
The soft, perfectly cooked brown sugar pearls were chewed in Ran Mingyue’s mouth. She felt the sweetness slide down her esophagus: “I can eat it now.”
Li Guang said “Oh,” and continued to seriously drink her own bubble tea. She stopped touching Ran Mingyue’s, afraid Ran Mingyue wouldn’t have any left.
Halfway through the bubble tea, Li Guang heard Wang Rou’s voice in her earpiece: “Prepare for return.”
“Their task is over?” Li Guang immediately snapped out of her leisurely state and stood up.
“It’s over. Xiang Que is in the nearby supermarket buying groceries. You can come back with him,” Wang Rou said. “Go out now; the driver will take you there.”
Li Guang gestured to Ran Mingyue. Ran Mingyue followed and stood up.
“The director said to pick up Teacher Xiang. He’s at the nearby supermarket buying groceries.”
“Pick up Brother Que?” Ran Mingyue said. “It seems they completed their task well. Needing a pick-up means they bought a lot.”
Li Guang rubbed her hands: “You’ll get a good meal at noon!”
As they left, Li Guang didn’t forget Ran Mingyue’s sore legs. Ran Mingyue said, “I’m fine. The car door is right ahead. I can get on by myself.”
Li Guang didn’t insist.
The bus drove back for less than ten minutes before they saw Xiang Que waiting on the side of the street.
Xiang Que was sitting on a curb with two large bags full of food on either side of him. As soon as the driver stopped, Li Guang got out to meet Xiang Que.
She naturally didn’t let Ran Mingyue get out.
There weren’t too many ingredients in the bags, but there was a pot for cooking hot pot, which explained why it was so heavy.
“Why is there a pot?” Li Guang asked, preparing to grab the bags. She reached for the one with the hot pot, which was heavier. Xiang Que stopped her: “That one is very heavy! Let me do it. You—”
Before he could finish, Li Guang had already lifted the bag: “Heavy?”
Li Guang’s face often made people forget she had such strength. Xiang Que silently picked up the other bag.
Xiang Que looked up and met Ran Mingyue’s eyes. He found a sense of helplessness in Ran Mingyue’s gaze, as if she was telling him she couldn’t control this girl either.
Xiang Que had already been carrying the bags for a long time before they arrived. He had just rested for a moment, and his aching arms hadn’t recovered. As he lifted the bag, one side wasn’t hooked properly, and ingredients tumbled out.
A tomato and a watermelon rolled to Li Guang’s feet. Li Guang bent down to look: “Teacher Xiang, are you only eating these vegetables for lunch?”
Xiang Que said awkwardly, “After buying this pot, there wasn’t enough money left for other things…”
“How much money did you all earn from the task?” Li Guang asked. “There are six of you. This isn’t enough.”
Xiang Que said, “Four hundred.”
The shopping receipt also fell out. Li Guang saw the price of the electric hot pot written on it. It was a flagship model of a certain brand, priced at two hundred eighty.
Li Guang fell silent. She stared at the electric hot pot for a moment, involuntarily imagining the scene of a few people sadly scooping up a single vegetable leaf from the pot.
That’s really unnecessary.
She noticed a small grocery store next to the supermarket, tiny and inconspicuous next to the large supermarket. Li Guang had an idea.
“I have a plan!” Li Guang said. “Let’s go return this electric hot pot first. You all worked so hard on the task today; you should at least get some meat.”
“No money…” Xiang Que said. Li Guang’s eyes were firm: “We’ll have money once we return the electric hot pot!”
“Bear II, what’s wrong?” Ran Mingyue rolled down the car window. Li Guang looked up: “Not enough groceries. Going back to the supermarket to buy more.”
“Little Ran, you talk some sense into your security guard. We don’t have any extra money,” Xiang Que said in surprise. “She says she wants to return the electric hot pot. How can we return it? Everyone specifically told me to buy it because we couldn’t find a pot at the main camp. They’re waiting for it!”
Ran Mingyue asked Li Guang, “Is that true?”
“I have a way, and I’ll buy everything quickly; it won’t take too much time,” this kind of life skill came naturally to Li Guang. “Is that okay?”
The end of her “is that okay” was a little sticky, sounding somewhat like a plea.
“Okay,” Ran Mingyue said. “Don’t worry, Teacher Xiang. If we don’t have enough to eat later, I’ll treat everyone, including the entire production team, to a meal.”
“Hey? Why are you joining her madness?” Xiang Que said helplessly but didn’t stop them. “Are you getting down?”
Ran Mingyue, of course, intended to get down.
Li Guang understood Ran Mingyue’s intention. She said, “Wait for me!” Li Guang said, “Teacher Xiang, why are you being so ungentlemanly!”
Xiang Que felt miserable.
Li Guang ran to the supermarket entrance and explained the situation to the staff inside. Soon after, Li Guang came out pushing a giant shopping cart.
“This is the biggest one in the supermarket. It has great load-bearing capacity. The staff said an adult can sit in it,” Li Guang spread her hands to Ran Mingyue. “Come on, sit on the princess’s throne.”
Although Ran Mingyue was unwell, she wasn’t completely unable to walk. The weak legs when she got out of the car were due to special circumstances—sitting for a long time combined with the pain in her inner thighs made her prone to falling.
With Li Guang here, Ran Mingyue knew she shouldn’t bother trying to walk. This Bear Ears was very stubborn about this.
Xiang Que watched as Li Guang put Ran Mingyue into… er, into the shopping cart, and what surprised him was that Ran Mingyue actually agreed!
Li Guang lifted her so easily that Xiang Que started to wonder if he was getting old and his strength was fading.
“Teacher Xiang, let’s go,” Li Guang said, pushing Ran Mingyue forward with quick steps.
To shield Ran Mingyue, Li Guang took out the black sunglasses she wasn’t wearing and put them on Ran Mingyue’s face.
She even sighed, thinking celebrities were indeed celebrities. They made the knock-off sunglasses provided by the security team look real.
“To be honest, I feel the same way as Movie King Xiang, who is wide-eyed in disbelief”
“Let me answer: Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing? Why is my strength not as good as a young girl’s?”
“Oh, am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculous? I think why did Bear II criticize Movie King Xiang? Anyway, the celebrities don’t eat much, and they just need a casual meal. That’s enough to buy all this.”
“Is no one going to manage a staff member talking to Movie King Xiang like that? What gives her the right? If Brother wasn’t so good-tempered, someone else would have fired her right away”
“My mentor thinks it’s okay. After all, they’ve been filming together for so many seasons. The guests and staff have also gotten used to each other, and their relationship should be pretty good now”
“Xiang Que: Okay. Bear II: Okay. Audience fans: No! You guys are really interesting”
“I only see Bear II’s thriftiness! She seems like the type of person who takes care of herself”
“I like people like that too. I feel like living with her would be incredibly happy”
“Bear II’s strength is genuinely great. Carrying Ran Mingyue up and down with one hand is super easy”
“Why impose common people’s thinking onto celebrities? There’s no need for the staff member to make him return things. What are they going to eat?”
“If they don’t have a way to cook when they get back, is everyone going to eat raw food?”
“This is kind of ruining her image. I was actually starting to like a staff member for the first time. Sigh, what a shame”
Li Guang was quick, already pushing Ran Mingyue inside. Xiang Que had no choice but to follow. She had already asked the staff, so she went straight to the returns counter.
Since the pot was just purchased and the staff saw the two camera PDs following, they knew it was for filming and naturally agreed.
Two hundred eighty-eight dollars instantly appeared! In cash.
“Thank you!” Li Guang thanked them happily, then showed off the hundred-dollar bills in her hand to Xiang Que and Ran Mingyue, mainly to Ran Mingyue.
Xiang Que looked worriedly at the electric hot pot put back on the shelf. “What about the pot?”
“Don’t worry, I have a way,” Li Guang said. “Let’s go buy meat first.”
Li Guang opened the bag of items Xiang Que had bought and saw that he hadn’t prepared enough hot pot base and seasonings, and some of the brands he chose were expensive but tasted mediocre.
No wonder Xiang Que had spent all the money on just a few things.
Li Guang didn’t say anything, just pushed Ran Mingyue along the aisles, conveniently swapping out items for better-suited varieties when she encountered them.
Only Ran Mingyue, sitting in the shopping cart, could clearly see what Li Guang was picking up and swapping out. Xiang Que was oblivious to all of this.
Ran Mingyue noticed that Li Guang was replacing items with more affordable options, some even nearly half the price of what Xiang Que had originally chosen.
Li Guang said, “These are brands I’ve eaten before, and the ingredient lists are also clean.”
“Ingredient list?” Ran Mingyue said. “I didn’t know you had to check that when buying groceries.”
“You don’t need to, of course. Sometimes the high price already filters the options,” Li Guang smiled. “Before, when I didn’t have much money but wanted hot pot, I calculated carefully and could still eat very well and nicely, which made me feel incredibly happy.”
Xiang Que looked at the increasingly full shopping cart and started to panic: “Do we really need to buy this much? Isn’t it too much? We’ll go over budget, right?”
“No,” Li Guang was constantly tallying the amount in her head. After all, a broke worker who started out splitting every penny wouldn’t let themselves go over budget.
Ran Mingyue said, “Let her choose properly first. If we really go over, we’ll cut things out.”
Unlike Xiang Que’s initial haul, Li Guang selected two large boxes of meat and other hot pot balls from the frozen section, and finally bought vegetables and some noodles. The variety was extensive, covering everything they needed.
Xiang Que nervously followed Li Guang to the checkout. When the total was tallied, he was stunned: “Three hundred seventy-seven?”
It was actually two dollars less than what he had bought, but they had twice the amount of items.
Ran Mingyue sat in the giant shopping cart. With her in it, the cart was nearly full. She looked like a tiny person inside.
She helped Li Guang take out one item after another to place on the register. “I told you to trust her. Bear Ears won’t be wrong.”
That’s Li Guang. Li Guang is always reliable!
In the end, it was packed into two large bags. Li Guang didn’t let Xiang Que carry them. After packing, she placed them in the shopping cart and continued pushing the cart toward the exit.
She had already cleared it with the staff when she borrowed the cart that she would need it until Ran Mingyue was safely seated on the bus.
Xiang Que blinked, still finding the last fifteen minutes unbelievable.
He followed and asked, “What about the pot? We still don’t have a pot!”
“Don’t rush, Teacher Xiang,” Li Guang happened to push the shopping cart in a different direction, stopping it at the entrance of the inconspicuous grocery store next to the supermarket.
The owner was sitting by the door, smoking and warming himself by a fire. There was even a stack of woven straw baskets at his feet.
“Hey, miss, what do you need?”
“An enamel washbasin, about this big,” Li Guang gestured. “Do you have one?”
“Oh, 26-inch? I happen to have the last one left. If you want it, I’ll sell it to you cheap.” The owner quickly fetched it. Xiang Que looked at the gaudy, vintage-style design, with bright peonies blooming before his eyes, and was momentarily speechless.
“…”
He wished he were blind.
Li Guang said, “Ten dollars.”
“Eight dollars, clearance price,” the owner said. “It’s yours.”
“Six dollars!” Li Guang countered. The owner put on a serious face: “Ten dollars!”
“Eight dollars it is. You’re quite the businessman, boss.” Li Guang didn’t try to lower the price further, turning to Xiang Que: “Teacher Xiang, payment, please.”
Xiang Que handed over the money and then realized: “Did you just bargain?”
“A little,” Li Guang said with a smile, slipping two dollars into Xiang Que’s hand. “But not much.”
Ran Mingyue said, “Two dollars is money. Every little bit counts.”
Xiang Que started to doubt himself.
Why did he feel a bizarre sense of achievement looking at the two dollars in his hand?
For a moment, Xiang Que even thought Li Guang was a genius, regardless of whether the things she bought later tasted good or not.
Li Guang continued pushing Ran Mingyue toward the bus. To avoid crowding Ran Mingyue, Li Guang even carried the two bags herself.
She carried them quickly and steadily, looking effortless.
“Be careful,” Li Guang diligently performed her duty as a carrier, not just for the groceries, but for Ran Mingyue too.
Xiang Que followed behind, holding the big red peony basin. A respectable movie king was suddenly down-to-earth and comical.
Oddly, no one there seemed to mind, but the fans outside the camera were thoroughly entertained.
“The impact is too strong”
“I also didn’t expect to see Xiang Que on this show holding my grandma’s washbasin”
“Who can see this and not say something about life wisdom!!!”
“Bear II must have struggled before. How does she know all this? The items she chose are both tasty and affordable. I buy them all the time!!!”
When Li Guang carried Ran Mingyue onto the bus, Xiang Que planned to grab the bags. He figured since Li Guang carried them so easily, they couldn’t be that heavy, right?
But as he put his hands on them and tried to lift, Xiang Que’s face turned green.
They’re so heavy! Is Li Guang an iron woman?!
“Let me do it, Teacher Xiang. You, you…” Li Guang’s words were cut short, and she suddenly changed: “Why are you being so considerate of the staff? I’m staff; it’s fine. I’ll do it.”
Li Guang swiftly took the bags from Xiang Que’s hands.
Although Xiang Que was a tall 185 cm, he felt incredibly small next to Li Guang at that moment.
The bus finally started moving towards the villa area.
After Xiang Que boarded, Li Guang was still placing the ingredients.
Ran Mingyue stayed in her original seat and didn’t move. She didn’t plan to either.
Xiang Que glanced at them and chose the same row as them, but on the other side.
Li Guang felt she shouldn’t sit with Ran Mingyue again, so she started to move toward the back.
“Where are you going?” Ran Mingyue reached out and blocked Li Guang’s path. “Not sitting in your original spot?”
Li Guang said, “Huh? I thought you said you asked me to sit with you because no one was talking to you, so…”
Ran Mingyue glanced toward Xiang Que. Xiang Que felt like a sinner and spoke up automatically: “Little Ran and I have nothing to talk about. You two chat, you two chat.”
Ran Mingyue reached out and pulled Li Guang’s wrist. It took no effort, and Li Guang sat down next to her.
Not guarding against Ran Mingyue, Li Guang nearly tumbled into Ran Mingyue’s embrace.
We’re filming! What if I bumped into you again!
Li Guang’s eyes widened, silently accusing Ran Mingyue, like a temporarily ruffled small animal.
The cameraman turned the camera. Ran Mingyue waited for Li Guang to be seated, then lightly leaned her head on Li Guang’s shoulder: “Is this okay?”
Her hand was no longer on Li Guang’s wrist, resting gently on the back of Li Guang’s hand. Her thumb, whether intentionally or unintentionally, subtly rubbed the skin on the back of Li Guang’s hand with the movement of the moving bus.
Li Guang protested quietly: “Teacher Ran, we’re filming.”
She was about to move away when Ran Mingyue said, “But I’m starting to feel a little dizzy.”
“Lean on me!” Li Guang said. When she spoke, everyone in the car paused their expressions.
Li Guang added in a whisper, “I mean lean on me. Lean on me right now.”
Ran Mingyue finally, and logically, rested her weight on Li Guang’s body. The driver hit the brakes somewhat abruptly.
This naturally allowed Ran Mingyue’s fingers to slip gently and snugly into Li Guang’s interlocked fingers.
She finally closed her eyes, hiding all her little schemes.
How wonderful.
