- The Scumbag Attackers Regretted It Deeply After My Death
- Chapter 45 - This is Impossible!
As for whether his eldest daughter, Yao Anna, had inherited the condition, Yao Guangming wasn’t worried at all. Although he was now out of danger, it didn’t mean he had forgotten that it was Yao Anna who had caused his predicament in the first place.
If Yao Anna also suffered from hereditary heart disease, Yao Guangming might have even celebrated for three days and nights upon hearing the news. He wished she would just die quickly so she would stop lingering before his eyes and irritating him.
“You know the person. The one who saved you is your eldest daughter, Yao Anna.”
“This… this, this is impossible!”
The news exploded in his ears like a clap of thunder. Yao Guangming’s eyes widened in disbelief. His wrinkled hand trembled, and the glass water cup slipped, shattering loudly on the floor!
Crasssh!
The cup was like a detonated bomb, splintering into countless sharp shards that flew out like bullets.
Shen Mengjin quickly retreated several steps to avoid the spray of glass. Frowning, she glanced at the mess on the floor and then looked deeply at Yao Guangming, who sat frozen on the bed. He looked as if he had been struck by lightning; his shock was palpable.
“Mr. Yao doesn’t believe it?”
A low, cold Alpha voice came from behind. Shen Mengjin looked toward the sound to see a tall, upright figure stepping slowly from the dark corridor into the brightly lit operating room. It was Jiang Nian’an. She was still wearing her white shirt with a suit jacket draped over her shoulders. Her handsome face appeared composed, and she looked much more energetic than before.
It was as if she had just taken a nap. From the outside, Jiang Nian’an didn’t look like an early-stage stomach cancer patient at all. Shen Mengjin’s eyes filled with worry. “President, why are you awake?”
Jiang Nian’an caught the subtext—she knew Shen wanted her to rest more. Facing Shen Mengjin, the coldness in the Alpha’s eyes softened slightly. “It’s fine. I heard the commotion and knew Mr. Yao was awake, so I came to take a look.”
Shen Mengjin was still uneasy, but since Yao Guangming—an outsider—was present, she didn’t say more.
“President Jiang… President Jiang, tell me, was it really Yao Anna who saved me? I… I really find this hard to accept.”
Yao Guangming snapped out of his daze, his brow furrowed. His face grew even paler, as if the news was a physical blow.
“I don’t understand what you’re doubting, Mr. Yao. No one else could have saved you except Anna.”
“Why do you say that, President Jiang?”
Shen Mengjin brought over a chair. Jiang Nian’an sat down, her long legs crossed. She pulled her suit jacket tighter; perhaps because Luoyun Villa had just been renovated and was uninhabited, the temperature here was much colder than outside.
“There is something you don’t know, Mr. Yao. At that time, the hospital had already issued a critical condition notice. The only solution they proposed was to bring in the famous cardiothoracic specialist from M Country, Dr. Adams. But Dr. Adams is internationally renowned, and his surgeries are booked through the middle of the year after next. It was only later that I learned Anna is Dr. Adams’ most prized student.”
Jiang Nian’an’s gaze was calm as she concluded, “Without her, you wouldn’t have survived this crisis. I know there are misunderstandings between you and Anna, but she is, after all, your biological daughter. Cough, cough…”
She pressed her fist to her lips and coughed twice. Having stayed awake for two days and nights and only sleeping for two or three hours, the strain on Jiang Nian’an’s body was irreversible. Seeing this, Shen Mengjin was frantic with worry. She hurried forward to support the Alpha’s arm, pleading, “President, you should go back and rest. It won’t be too late to talk to Mr. Yao after you’ve slept.”
Jiang Nian’an nodded, a hint of exhaustion finally appearing in her eyes. She stood up slowly and gave the frozen Yao Guangming a long look. The older man remained silent with his head bowed. Jiang Nian’an shook her head and said softly, “It’s late, and you haven’t recovered yet, Mr. Yao. I won’t disturb you further. Get some rest; we will talk about everything tomorrow.”
Hearing this, Yao Guangming seemed to wake from a dream. He looked up at Jiang Nian’an, his reactions delayed. He nodded blankly, still clearly reeling from the shock.
Seeing him like this, Jiang Nian’an said no more. Supported by Shen Mengjin, she returned to her room. As she lay on the bed, Shen Mengjin tucked her in, hesitating before asking, “President, it was clearly Dr. Adams who performed the surgery. Why did we say Miss Yao was the one who saved him?”
Jiang Nian’an, who had already closed her eyes, opened them slowly. Looking at the confused Shen Mengjin, she sighed softly and explained, “That was Dr. Adams’ wish as well. He said he came to the Imperial Capital because of Anna, and he only agreed to the surgery because Yao Guangming is Anna’s biological father. He doesn’t want word of this to get out, fearing others might mimic my methods to threaten or force him into operating on strangers.”
“This was the only request Dr. Adams made. I couldn’t refuse.”
Shen Mengjin froze for a moment, then scratched her head as realization dawned on her.
“No wonder… Dr. Adams is truly a good person.”
Jiang Nian’an gave a faint “mm” and closed her eyes again. She seemed utterly exhausted.
“Go on. Take care of Mr. Yao. Also, contact Yao Zhenzhen. She called me many times and I didn’t answer. Tell her to send a car to pick up Mr. Yao tomorrow morning.”
“Understood.”
Shen Mengjin noted the instructions, tucked the blanket in once more, and turned to leave.
Once she was gone, Jiang Nian’an stared at the ceiling, unable to fall asleep. She had a feeling Dr. Adams knew something beforehand, otherwise he wouldn’t have made such a request—though his stated reason was also plausible.
That night, Yao Anna slept incredibly soundly. Likely due to the chaos of the previous day, she woke up early, freshened up, and applied makeup suitable for her character’s costume before heading out.
A white Volkswagen was parked outside the hotel. Yao Ling was leaning against the car, happily eating a steaming hot bun. Seeing Yao Anna emerge, she waved enthusiastically.
“Sister Anna! Over here!”
The morning wind in the Imperial Capital carried a chill, and a thin layer of smog shrouded the massive city like a waking beast.
Yao Anna wore sunglasses and a mask. Since they were in the suburbs, she wasn’t worried that Yao Ling’s shouting would draw unnecessary attention.
Yao Ling hurried to open the passenger door for her. Once Anna was inside, Ling circled the car to the driver’s seat, bit into her bun, and buckled her seatbelt.
“Did you eat breakfast, Sister Anna? I bought lots of buns—carrot and pork with scallion, your favorites. Oh, and soy milk…”
Yao Anna took off her sunglasses and mask, accepting the fragrant buns and milk. She took a sip of the soy milk, feeling the warmth spread through her body.
Seeing Yao Ling’s high spirits, she knew the girl had rested well. Yao Anna’s eyes crinkled into a smile as she took a bite of a bun. “Thanks, it’s delicious.”
“Hehe,” Yao Ling grinned sheepishly, quickly finished her bun, wiped her hands, and started the car toward the airport. As she drove, she added, “Eat slowly, Sister Anna. I also brought breakfast for the Professor and Peter. I wonder if they’ve ever had Chinese buns before?”
“Probably not.”
Yao Anna didn’t usually have a habit of eating breakfast. She was full after one bun and half a cup of milk. The reason she was up so early was that Adams and Peter were flying out of China this morning. The filming commencement ceremony didn’t start until 9:00 AM, so there was just enough time to drop them off and get back.
Once full, she idly pulled out her phone and checked Weibo. Out of habit, she scrolled through the trending searches. There wasn’t much new; the top of the list was mostly about the opening ceremony of Phoenix Reborn. She scrolled further down until she reached the bottom of the trending list, where a headline caught her eye.
“Trouble at the Start of ‘Phoenix Reborn’: Second Female Lead Guan Luoxue Rushes to Hospital Overnight”
Guan Luoxue. Hospital.
These keywords triggered memories of what happened the previous night. Yao Anna’s eyes flashed with a cold light. Guan Luoxue must have bought this trending spot last night to use against her. Unfortunately, a major cheating scandal involving a famous actress had broken early this morning, burying Guan’s paid search.
Tsk.
A classic case of the villain suing first?
She exited Weibo and opened a single-player game. She didn’t care about the headline that was about to drop off the charts. She knew she didn’t need to handle this; Director Zou would take care of it. Given the previous controversies and the fact that Phoenix Reborn was about to start filming, Director Zou would never allow Guan Luoxue to act recklessly.
Just as she expected, shortly after she left the hotel, Director Zou arrived in a whirlwind.
Assistant Director Xie Chengfeng was already waiting at the door. Seeing the director’s car, he rushed forward to open the door respectfully. “Director Zou, you’re finally back.”
Director Zou looked displeased. He strode toward the hotel, saying as he walked, “My kid had a fever last night, so I took the chance before filming started to head home. I didn’t expect such a big mess to happen the moment I left!”
He shot a disappointed look at Xie Chengfeng and poked him in the forehead. “You, you! You’ve been with me for three or four years, and I finally made you an assistant director. I really don’t know if that was a mistake!”
