- Chapter 35 - What Do I Know?
Jiang Nian’an sank into deep thought for a moment before pacing back to her desk and sitting down. Tapping her fingertips lightly on the tabletop, she asked in a low, heavy voice, “Have the people you sent to tail Yao Anna reported back yet?”
Speaking of this made Shen Mengjin’s head ache. She wore a helpless expression. “I haven’t had the chance to tell you yet. I dispatched five teams to track the Madam’s whereabouts. Four teams returned empty-handed, and only one team is left—the one you ordered to stake out the five-star hotel. They said they spotted the Madam’s car.”
“Oh?”
Jiang Nian’an raised a brow, slightly surprised.
She hadn’t originally harbored much hope for that hotel, but unexpectedly, her people had discovered the Ferrari that Yao Anna usually drove. Yao Anna had no real estate in her own name; she was often away filming, and when she returned, she stayed at the Yao family residence. However, she only had that one car. This was an unexpected harvest.
“Where the car is, the person is. Keep a close eye on it. I believe we will find them very soon.”
The corners of Jiang Nian’an’s lips curled slightly, a flicker of light in her eyes. She looked up at Shen Mengjin and did not forget to remind her, “However, we need to have a backup plan. You mentioned before that Dr. Adams is only staying in the Imperial Capital for one night and is flying out tomorrow, right?”
Shen Mengjin nodded. It was precisely because they were only staying for one night that she had set aside all her other work to focus entirely on how to find Adams.
“The time is too tight,” Shen Mengjin said with a bitter smile.
“No rush. Without my consent, they aren’t leaving the Imperial Capital.”
Jiang Nian’an chuckled softly, her gaze filled with a look of absolute determination.
Originally, she hadn’t wanted to take forceful action against Dr. Adams. As long as he obediently followed her back to save Yao Guangming, she didn’t want to use such aggressive methods.
But since he refused to cooperate, Jiang Nian’an could only resort to heavy-handed tactics. She said coldly, “Take men and surround the airport entrances. If we don’t find him tonight, we’ll simply make it impossible for him to leave the capital. Once he finishes the surgery for Yao Guangming, we’ll let him go.”
After Shen Mengjin left the office and the door clicked shut, Jiang Nian’an finally looked up, her eyes dark and pensive.
Just then, a melodious ringtone interrupted her thoughts. Jiang Nian’an picked up her phone and glanced at it; the caller ID showed Yao Zhenzhen’s name.
Jiang Nian’an frowned imperceptibly, but ultimately answered the call. Before everything came to light, she couldn’t be certain whether Yao Zhenzhen was truly the person who had saved her back then.
Therefore, she still had to deal with this hypocritical Omega.
“Is something wrong?”
The Alpha’s voice was clear and cold, devoid of any emotion.
Yao Zhenzhen seemed long accustomed to this and didn’t sense anything amiss. Her voice came through the receiver with its usual cloying sweetness.
“Sister Nian’an, I’m calling just to thank you. If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have been able to join the production crew.”
After a slight pause, Yao Zhenzhen’s voice carried a hint of difficulty and grievance. “Even though Director Zou only assigned me the role of the fifth female lead… I used to play the second or third lead… I’m not saying this to blame you, Sister Nian’an, because I know you’ve already done your best.”
Jiang Nian’an’s beautiful eyes narrowed: “…”
How had she never noticed before that Yao Zhenzhen spoke with such affected, “Green Tea” mannerisms? Hearing it now actually made her feel nauseous.
The Alpha rubbed her throbbing temples, her gaze filled with contempt and disdain. Yao Zhenzhen had starred in a movie once, and Jiang Nian’an had gone to the cinema with her to see it. Back then, her filter for Yao Zhenzhen was so thick, yet she had still felt that Yao Zhenzhen’s acting was an eyesore.
Ultimately, that movie had flopped.
What did that prove? It proved the woman’s acting was terrible!
Jiang Nian’an began to suspect that all of Yao Zhenzhen’s acting talent was being used exclusively on her.
“Phoenix Reborn is a major production, incomparable to any other drama in the last ten years. I have already placed you in it. As for which role you play, that depends entirely on Director Zou’s arrangements. Although I am the investor, I cannot interfere with the Director’s decisions. You understand, right?”
While the Alpha said this, her heart was full of cold laughter.
Given Yao Zhenzhen’s amateurish acting, Jiang Nian’an felt that giving her the fifth female lead was a waste—a waste of a good role.
Does she even deserve it?
“Hm. Anything else? If not, I’m hanging up. I’m busy.”
“Sister Nian’an, don’t hang up yet!” Yao Zhenzhen cried out hurriedly, her voice turning coquettish. “Actually, it’s like this: the crew is implementing a closed management system. Starting tomorrow until the wrap-up, I won’t be able to leave. I have a class reunion tonight, and I wanted to invite you to accompany me.”
Jiang Nian’an: “…”
What? If she didn’t accompany her, she couldn’t go?
She took a deep breath, forcing herself to swallow the retort on the tip of her tongue.
Suddenly thinking of how Yao Anna always retorted until people were speechless, Jiang Nian’an’s lips curled up slightly as she let out a light laugh.
Could she have been infected by Yao Anna?
“I…”
Jiang Nian’an cleared her throat, about to refuse Yao Zhenzhen’s invitation, when Shen Mengjin suddenly pushed the door open and hurried toward her.
Seeing that she was on the phone, Shen Mengjin lowered her voice, her expression unable to hide her excitement. “President! We found it. The Madam is going to the ‘First Floor’ Hotpot Restaurant tonight.”
Jiang Nian’an’s gaze sharpened. She covered the microphone, her expression serious. “Is the information reliable?”
Shen Mengjin nodded vigorously. “Absolutely reliable! I found it by checking the Madam’s call records. Furthermore, the people I sent reported seeing the Madam with two foreigners and another woman. The Madam didn’t drive her Ferrari; she was in that woman’s car. It’s clear the Madam is being very cautious!”
“Excellent. Once we catch Dr. Adams, I’ll have the finance department issue you an extra month’s bonus!”
A smile finally touched Jiang Nian’an’s eyes.
Yao Anna, oh Yao Anna. Even with all your calculations, haven’t you been found by me in the end?
“Thank you, Boss!” Shen Mengjin’s eyes lit up. She pointed to the phone in Jiang Nian’an’s hand, reminding her, “President, you’re still on the call.”
“Oh, almost forgot.”
She removed her hand from the microphone and pressed the phone back to her ear. Yao Zhenzhen’s voice came through: “Sister Nian’an, are you still there? My friends said it’s been a long time since we had hotpot and they reserved a table at the ‘First Floor.’ Would you like to have hotpot? If you don’t want to, we can change venues…”
The First Floor?
Jiang Nian’an was stunned for a moment. Wasn’t that where Yao Anna and the others were going?
“Sister Nian’an?”
Hearing no response from the Alpha for a while, Yao Zhenzhen called out softly.
“Fine,” Jiang Nian’an agreed quite readily.
In the Imperial Capital, the “First Floor” Hotpot Restaurant was like a living landmark. The owner was a genuine Southerner, and everything—from the hotpot base to the ingredients and service—was top-notch!
Most locals in the Imperial Capital knew that this was the place where you could get the best taste for an affordable price.
The decoration of the restaurant leaned toward a classic Chinese style. The first floor was the main hall, where each table was partitioned by exquisite screens and furnished with comfortable large sofas. Copper pots sat on the tables, making it perfect for gatherings of friends and family.
The second floor consisted of private rooms, suitable for large groups of about twenty people. The decoration was similar to the first floor.
Because of Yao Anna’s status, she chose a private room on the second floor. But as soon as they entered the room, Adams frowned. Yao Anna couldn’t help but ask, “What is it, Teacher? Do you not like it here?”
Adams shook his head. “I just feel that such a large room for only four of us is rather extravagant and wasteful. Besides, it’s lively downstairs. Why don’t we eat on the first floor?”
“The first floor…”
Yao Anna was caught in a dilemma. Beside her, Yao Ling’s eyes were filled with confusion. Just as Yao Ling was about to speak, Yao Anna lightly tugged at her sleeve, stopping her with a look.
Yao Ling was even more baffled. She leaned in and whispered a reminder, “Sister Anna, you can’t dine on the first floor. There are so many people there; if someone recognizes you, it’ll be trouble!”
“I know.” Yao Anna sighed softly, casting a deep look at the worried Yao Ling. “But my teacher wants to go. They are leaving tomorrow; I can’t even satisfy such a small wish?”
Yao Ling froze, looking at Yao Anna in disbelief. “No, don’t you know how popular you are right now? What if you’re recognized! And does Mr. Adams not realize the seriousness of this matter?”
Yao Anna nodded imperceptibly. “He knows.”
“And he still makes such an unreasonable request?”
“But he doesn’t know that I am a celebrity.”
Yao Anna patted her shoulder gently, then turned with a smile to the bewildered Adams and Peter. “Alright, let’s go.”
Peter had watched the two of them whispering for a while and felt a bit frustrated. What could they be talking about that even he and the teacher couldn’t hear?
“Where are we going?”
Yao Anna rolled her eyes at him and said irritably, “To the first floor to eat hotpot, of course.”
Peter nodded, intentionally trailing half a step behind Adams. Catching Yao Ling trying to catch up out of the corner of his eye, he grabbed her wrist and placed a finger to his lips in a shushing gesture.
Yao Ling looked at the retreating backs of Yao Anna and Adams, her expression full of doubt. She whispered, “Is something the matter, Mr. Peter?”
Peter stared at Yao Ling, silent for a moment, then asked mysteriously, “What were you just saying to my junior sister?”
Are foreigners this gossipy too?
Recalling what Yao Anna had said, Yao Ling took on a guarded look, attempting to brush him off. “Nothing much, just some work-related matters.”
“Work?”
It was Peter’s turn to look surprised. He asked blankly, “Since when does my junior sister have a job? Hasn’t she been resting at home all this time?”
