- Chapter 25 - Money is Not the Issue
“What’s going on here?”
Jiang Nian’an pulled a pack of tissues from her pocket and handed them to Yao Zhenzhen. Due to her germaphobia, she always carried clean tissues with her.
She expected Yao Zhenzhen to take the tissue and move away, but to her surprise, the woman didn’t even reach for it!
Jiang Nian’an’s handsome face darkened, her brow furrowing deeply. She was reaching the limit of her patience, struggling to suppress the irritation rising within her.
Finally, seeing Jiang Nian’an’s displeasure, Zheng Xiulan’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly pulled Yao Zhenzhen away—who was still clinging to the Alpha, covered in tears and snot, wallowing in self-pity. Zheng Xiulan took the tissues from Jiang Nian’an with both hands and gave a sheepish smile. “I’m so sorry, President Jiang… sorry for making a scene.”
Jiang Nian’an glanced coldly at the sleeve of her suit before saying expressionlessly, “It’s fine.”
Whether it was actually “fine” or not, Zheng Xiulan couldn’t tell. Jiang Nian’an’s face was so grim that her true feelings were impossible to read.
Yao Zhenzhen took the tissues from Zheng Xiulan and wiped the tear stains from her face, answering between sobs, “Dr. Li… Dr. Li said that if Dad woke up within two hours, he would be out of the danger zone. But it’s been five hours since he left the operating room, and he still hasn’t woken up…”
“Sister Nian’an, what should I do?”
As she spoke, Yao Zhenzhen looked up at the Alpha with misty eyes, appearing quite pitiful.
Unfortunately, Yao Zhenzhen had no idea she had just crossed the Alpha’s line. In Jiang Nian’an’s eyes, she looked utterly repulsive. Not crying was one thing, but the moment she started, Jiang Nian’an could only think of how she had grabbed her arm without permission, smearing tears and mucus everywhere.
It was infuriating.
Jiang Nian’an took a deep breath, forcing herself to calm down. she shifted her gaze to the middle-aged man lying motionless on the hospital bed. Frowning, she suddenly asked Dr. Li, “What is the situation now?”
Dr. Li looked distressed. Wiping the cold sweat from his forehead, he said hesitantly, “I’m not entirely sure. This afternoon, we gathered all the experts in the capital to examine him and held a consultation meeting, but regarding Mr. Yao’s current condition…”
Seeing his hesitation, Jiang Nian’an understood. Her eyes darkened as she asked coldly, “In other words, you are unable to treat Mr. Yao, correct?”
Dr. Li froze. Though he didn’t want to admit it, the Alpha was stating the facts. He couldn’t argue and could only nod honestly.
“Yes… domestic medical technology is still not advanced enough…”
Before Dr. Li could finish, Jiang Nian’an interrupted him coldly. She had no time to listen to this incompetent doctor ramble. The Jiang Conglomerate and the Yao Group had a partnership involving hundreds of millions in profit. Now that Yao Guangming was incapacitated, the remaining rabble wouldn’t be able to keep such a large company afloat.
We were talking about hundreds of millions, not a few hundred thousand—this was no small sum!
“Just tell me how there might be a hope of curing Mr. Yao. Even a sliver of hope!”
Dr. Li pursed his lips and said with difficulty, “To cure Mr. Yao, I’m afraid we would have to invite the famous American cardiologist, Dr. Adams.”
“Then why haven’t you invited him?”
Dr. Li scratched his head and explained, “Dr. Adams is world-renowned; his skills have shocked the international community. If you wanted to make an appointment for him to perform surgery, you’d likely have to wait until the middle of the year after next. Furthermore, a hospital of our level isn’t qualified to host an expert of his caliber.”
“Is he that difficult to book?”
Jiang Nian’an frowned. This was a problem. If they had to wait until the year after next to secure the legendary Dr. Adams, she wasn’t sure if Yao Guangming would last that long.
Zheng Xiulan and Yao Zhenzhen had known the situation for a while. They had been counting on Jiang Nian’an to use her influence to bring Dr. Adams to treat Yao Guangming. When they saw Jiang Nian’an frown, their hearts sank.
The mother and daughter shared a look. Zheng Xiulan caught the signal, built up her emotions, and suddenly began to wail!
“My husband! My poor husband… if you stay lying here like this, what will become of us, a widow and her daughter!”
“Mom…” Yao Zhenzhen looked moved, her face full of pain. She held Zheng Xiulan’s shoulders, her voice raspy and dry. “It’s okay, Mom. Dad is a good man; heaven will watch over him. He will get better slowly… maybe he’s just sleeping a bit longer than usual?”
The mother and daughter performed their synchronized act perfectly, succeeding only in making the already annoyed Jiang Nian’an even more frustrated.
“Enough! Will crying solve the problem?”
The two women flinched, looking up at Jiang Nian’an with pleading eyes. Tears shimmering, Yao Zhenzhen begged, “Sister Nian’an, if it’s you, you can definitely get Dr. Adams to treat my father! I’m begging you, please help me.”
Begging? Dr. Li gave Yao Zhenzhen a strange look before glancing at Jiang Nian’an. He was confused; hadn’t Yao Zhenzhen said Jiang Nian’an was her fiancé? Did young people play these kinds of power games nowadays?
Jiang Nian’an naturally noticed Dr. Li’s odd gaze. She shot him a freezing glare, causing him to shrink back and lower his head. She huffed and said in a deep voice, “…I will do my best to try.”
Hearing the Alpha’s answer, Yao Zhenzhen was overjoyed. She excitedly grabbed Zheng Xiulan’s hand. “Mom, Sister Nian’an promised to help us!”
“As long as Sister Nian’an helps, we have nothing to fear!”
Zheng Xiulan nodded with relief, adding softly, “Yes, President Jiang is so young and capable. With her connections, I’m sure she can invite Dr. Adams!”
Jiang Nian’an felt a surge of inexplicable irritability. She hadn’t even guaranteed anything—where did these two get the confidence that her involvement meant guaranteed success?
“I’m going out to make a call.”
Jiang Nian’an felt the air in the room was stifling. She turned and left the ward, walking into the silent corridor. The deep night seeped in, making the Alpha’s silhouette look somewhat lonely and isolated.
She opened a window, breathed in the fresh air, and dialed her secretary, Shen Mengjin.
“President, this is Shen Mengjin.”
“Yes. Do you know of a famous American cardiac surgeon named Adams? Find a way to book him to come here and perform heart surgery on Yao Guangming.”
There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by a shocked voice. “President, are you referring to Dr. Adams, the head of cardiac surgery at Los Angeles Hospital?! My goodness… that man is world-famous. His fees are astronomical, and word is the waiting list for his surgeries already stretches into the year after next.”
“I don’t care how much it costs.”
“The thing is, boss, this isn’t about the money!”
“Even money won’t settle it?” Jiang Nian’an was surprised and even more shocked.
In her memory, there were very few things that money couldn’t solve. Even if there were, given her power in the capital where she could practically summon the wind and rain, almost no one dared to oppose her!
But Dr. Adams was in America. No matter how much power Jiang Nian’an had, it was limited to the capital; she couldn’t reach all the way to the U.S.
“Yes!” Shen Mengjin’s answer was firm.
Shen Mengjin had been with Jiang Nian’an for seven or eight years, even before she became the head of the Jiang Conglomerate. Jiang Nian’an knew her secretary’s personality; she was efficient and wouldn’t make excuses just because something was difficult. Since she said so, Jiang Nian’an realized that inviting Dr. Adams to operate on Yao Guangming was going to be an uphill battle.
Jiang Nian’an sighed deeply, momentarily at a loss for what to do.
“If Yao Guangming is gone, the Yao Group probably won’t last long.”
Shen Mengjin’s heart skipped a beat as she asked hesitantly, “Then the project we were collaborating on… won’t it fall through?”
“Yes. Not only that, but both our families will likely lose a lot of money together.”
The Alpha’s voice was low and gravelly, carrying a hint of worry.
Silence fell over the line again. A moment later, the sound of a keyboard clicking rapidly came through the phone.
Tap, tap, tap!
Jiang Nian’an listened quietly without speaking. When the clicking stopped, Shen Mengjin said seriously, “President, I just checked Dr. Adams’ schedule. His next stop seems to be the capital, but he’s only staying for one day before flying to Italy!”
One day? That short?
Jiang Nian’an was puzzled. Logically, someone as busy as Dr. Adams wouldn’t just drop into the capital for a single day. What could he possibly do in one day before flying out?
“Find out what he’s coming to the capital for, and get his flight details.”
“Understood.”
Hanging up the phone, Jiang Nian’an suddenly sensed someone behind her. She turned around to see Yao Zhenzhen standing against the light from the room, watching her with a complicated, worried expression.
If Jiang Nian’an hadn’t been out on the phone for so long, Yao Zhenzhen wouldn’t have overheard her conversation with Shen Mengjin. Even she hadn’t realized that inviting an expert would be this difficult and complex.
“Sister Nian’an, I didn’t mean to eavesdrop on your call with Secretary Shen…”
Jiang Nian’an’s mind was a mess. She shook her head slightly and asked indifferently, “You heard everything?”
Yao Zhenzhen’s eyes flickered. She nervously bit her lip and whispered, “I heard… a little bit…”
