The Scumbag Attackers Regretted It Deeply After My Death - Chapter 24
“The good news is that the people I sent to the hospital just reported back. They say that old fox Yao Guangming still hasn’t regained consciousness. Zheng Xiulan and Yao Zhenzhen are scrambling to find a way to wake him up.”
Upon hearing this, Yao Anna was slightly startled, but her surprise was quickly replaced by a faint, imperceptible smile.
“Oh?” Her voice was as calm as still water, seemingly a casual response. However, those bright eyes betrayed a flash of undeniable pleasure.
Yao Anna’s voice, tinged with amusement, carried over to Pei Congling: “That is indeed good news.”
She had originally assumed that the phone call that summoned Jiang Nian’an away this afternoon was because Yao Guangming had woken up. So, he was still out. Yao Anna smiled sincerely; she actually hoped he wouldn’t wake up so soon. It would be best if he just became a vegetable—quiet, settled, and one less headache for her to deal with.
On the other end of the line, Pei Congling was also smiling while handling work in her office. Flipping through documents, she laughed, “Yes, with that old fox Yao Guangming gone, those useless hacks at the Yao Group can’t stir up any significant trouble. I’ll implement the plan we discussed as soon as possible.”
Then, remembering something, she switched the phone to her other hand and asked:
“I saw the message you sent today. I was in a meeting then and didn’t have time to reply. Are you joining the film crew tomorrow?”
Yao Anna leaned back against the headboard in a languid posture. She let out a soft “mm,” her tone casual yet carrying an underlying weight of seriousness.
She adjusted her pillow to get more comfortable, closing her eyes as she spoke slowly: “The director notified me to go in for costume shots tomorrow. I’ll likely officially join the crew immediately after. As you know, the Phoenix Reborn production uses a strictly closed management style. Once I’m in, I might lose contact with the outside world.”
These words seemed ordinary, but they contained a hidden message. Yao Anna was subtly urging Pei Congling to move faster. Once she was isolated on set, it would be difficult to predict how the external environment might shift. She wanted Pei Congling to seize the window of opportunity.
Pei Congling was no fool; how could she miss the depth in Yao Anna’s words?
Her expression remained calm, even offering a faint smile as a sign of understanding. She replied softly, “Alright, I understand.”
Four simple words, yet they radiated the confidence of someone who had everything under control. After all, they were both exceptionally clever; many things didn’t need to be said out loud for them to be in sync.
After hanging up, Pei Congling used the desk phone to call her assistant inside. Even without Yao Anna’s prompting, Pei Congling had already intended to take advantage of Yao Guangming’s illness to strike at the Yao Group’s jugular. Their thoughts aligned perfectly.
A few minutes later, the assistant entered and spoke respectfully, “President Pei, you called for me?”
“Yes.” Pei Congling signed her name on the final page with her fountain pen, capped it slowly, and looked up at her assistant. “I have something very important for you to handle…”
Night draped over the city like a mysterious veil. As time passed, the city lights flickered on, dotting the bustling landscape like a sea of stars. In the heart of the city’s most vibrant district stood the towering Jiang Corporation skyscraper—a fortress overlooking the world below.
The eighty-eighth floor housed the CEO’s office.
The heavy doors opened slowly as Jiang Nian’an and her secretary, Shen Mengjin, walked into the space defined by power and authority. Jiang Nian’an tossed the files onto the massive mahogany desk and sat in her chair. Leaning back, she rubbed her furrowed brow, strained from overwork, and said in a low voice, “Organize the meeting minutes and send them to me as soon as possible.”
Shen Mengjin nodded.
Then, she pulled Jiang Nian’an’s phone from her pocket, checked the screen, and carefully handed it to her.
“President, your phone was vibrating constantly during the meeting. I just saw that Ms. Yao called you over a dozen times. Do you want to call her back?”
Jiang Nian’an paused, her gaze lifting to the refined Shen Mengjin behind her gold-rimmed glasses.
“Ms. Yao? Which Ms. Yao?”
The Alpha’s sudden question left Shen Mengjin stunned. She hesitated before answering, “My apologies, I forgot you have an engagement with another Ms. Yao. That was the second daughter, Yao Zhenzhen, calling.”
Happy for nothing.
Jiang Nian’an’s eyes dimmed slightly. She pinched the bridge of her nose and said flatly, “Pay attention in the future.”
“…Understood.”
Only after the Alpha took the phone did Shen Mengjin exit the office.
Jiang Nian’an slowly opened her eyes, her gaze falling on the long string of missed calls. Her brow furrowed; her expression was as flat as water, devoid of emotion.
When Shen Mengjin had abruptly mentioned “Ms. Yao,” Jiang Nian’an had reflexively thought of Yao Anna. A flash of surprise had crossed her mind: Yao Anna actually called me first? That’s rare! Did the sun rise in the west today?
However, once she realized the “Ms. Yao” in question was actually Yao Zhenzhen, a strange sense of disappointment welled up in her heart.
Oh, so it wasn’t her…
In fairness, Shen Mengjin wasn’t entirely to blame. Yao Anna appeared at the Jiang Corporation so rarely she was practically a ghost. Jiang Nian’an had asked her why once, and Yao Anna had replied: “I don’t have anything important to deal with, and we see each other every day anyway. There’s no need to bother you while you’re working, right?”
At the time, Jiang Nian’an had thought Yao Anna was almost too well-behaved—to the point of being dull.
Everything changed after she “learned” that Yao Zhenzhen was the savior she had been searching for.
Since then, Yao Zhenzhen had become a frequent visitor. Sometimes she brought chicken soup, other times she just wandered around to kill time. Jiang Nian’an didn’t stop her, letting her do as she pleased.
She figured as long as Yao Zhenzhen didn’t interfere with work, it was fine. After all, the girl had saved her life; she couldn’t be cold to her savior.
As this became a regular occurrence, the employees of the Jiang Corporation began to misinterpret the relationship, whispering behind their backs. Jiang Nian’an was unaware; her subordinates didn’t dare discuss her private life during work hours, and Shen Mengjin was her only secretary-assistant for both work and life.
Shen Mengjin had heard the rumors, but she was too busy to dwell on them, and certainly too intimidated to ask. Over time, she had simply accepted the “fact” of their relationship.
Who knew what was going through the CEO’s head today? Shen Mengjin wondered if they had fought. Why else would she suddenly remember the fiancée she rarely mentioned?
If Jiang Nian’an hadn’t brought it up, Shen Mengjin might have truly forgotten that someone like Yao Anna even existed.
The Hospital.
By the time Jiang Nian’an arrived, the sky was pitch black. She hurried to Yao Guangming’s ward and found Yao Zhenzhen and Zheng Xiulan inside, along with Dr. Li and two nurses. The middle-aged man on the bed was motionless, covered in tubes, as the machines beside him beeped rhythmically.
Yao Zhenzhen was the first to notice Jiang Nian’an. Like a moth to a flame, she lunged at her, gripping the Alpha’s arm tightly as if clinging to her last lifeline, and began to sob: “Sister Nian’an, why are you just getting here! Wuuu… you don’t know how scared I was…”
Faced with such a “warm” welcome, Jiang Nian’an took a deep breath, forcefully suppressing the rising tide of irritation in her chest.
A flicker of disgust flashed through her eyes. She had severe germaphobia, and the act of Yao Zhenzhen shamelessly wiping tears and snot onto her clothes was nothing short of a nightmare. This was the first time anyone had dared to do such a thing to her face.
The Alpha’s temples throbbed. She felt like Yao Zhenzhen was testing her absolute limits. If she didn’t owe Yao Zhenzhen her life, she would have reached the breaking point and flung her across the room!
God dammit, does this woman have no sense of hygiene?!
