- The Scumbag Attackers Regretted It Deeply After My Death
- Chapter 18 - The Suspicion Sets In
“What if she’s a spy sent by that old fox, Yao Guangming? What if she’s just putting on an act for me? What if…”
“Stop with the ‘what ifs.’ You have too many excuses. I think you just don’t want to cooperate with her properly.”
Shen Xi couldn’t listen anymore and couldn’t help but retort to Pei Congling. In her view, no matter how strong Yao Anna was, she was still an Omega who needed an Alpha’s protection. Pei Congling’s level of suspicion toward her was indeed a bit unkind.
Pei Congling suddenly opened her eyes. She turned her head, looked at Shen Xi with some surprise, and chuckled. She abruptly sat up, placed her long legs, which had been resting on the sofa armrest, on the floor, put her hands behind her waist, and smiled in a somewhat provoking manner.
“What’s this? Judging by your tone… you feel sorry for her?”
Shen Xi’s eyes flickered. She calmly placed her teacup on the coffee table and said lightly, “Don’t talk nonsense. I just don’t approve of your approach.”
Pei Congling chuckled, not minding Shen Xi’s attitude. They had been close friends for over a decade, had fought side by side on the battlefield before, and Shen Xi had even taken a bullet for her. She trusted Shen Xi implicitly.
Therefore, jokes aside, if a simple jest could sour their relationship, then it wasn’t worth having the friendship.
Although Pei Congling usually greeted everyone with a smile, no one dared to speak to her this way except for Shen Xi. In other people’s eyes, she was a textbook smiling tiger, a maniac who could plunge a knife into an enemy’s heart while laughing, a terrifying figure no one would dare to provoke.
“I understand what you mean. You’re just easily swayed by Omegas…”
Pei Congling knew Shen Xi well. Shen Xi was somewhat of a dominant Alpha, believing all Omegas to be pure and harmless. She shook her head with a wry smile, looked up at Shen Xi, and said in a deep voice, “But you don’t know that some Omegas are very dangerous. One wrong move and she could make you willingly die for her. And Yao Anna is that kind of woman. She’s beautiful, very charismatic…”
“But at the same time, she is extremely dangerous!”
“I was just asking what you thought. Don’t try to brainwash me with these fallacies. I’m not one of those foolish subordinates of yours!”
Shen Xi’s brows furrowed slightly. She waved her hand dismissively, got up from the sofa, and made a move to leave.
Seeing her stubbornness, Pei Congling touched her nose with an innocent expression. In any case, she had already warned Shen Xi. Whether Shen Xi believed her or not was not her concern.
“Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing. Hey, while you’re at it, help me check into Yao Anna.”
“Haven’t we checked before?” Shen Xi was faintly impatient. “Why again?”
How little did this person trust Yao Anna, to ask her to investigate her every few days?
Pei Congling smiled and said, “This time, I want to investigate her life experience from childhood. Only by knowing yourself and your enemy can you safely entrust your back to her, right?”
Pei Congling had been betrayed by a comrade on the battlefield before, so her guard was extremely high, and she found it hard to trust anyone. Furthermore, Yao Anna’s sudden and drastic change Pei Congling did not believe it was due to illness. There must be some hidden story she didn’t know, so for her to completely trust Yao Anna, she had to uncover the deepest secret in Yao Anna’s heart!
“Got it.”
Shen Xi was resigned to Pei Congling’s excessive suspicion, but she had no choice but to agree. She turned and left the CEO’s office.
She didn’t know that behind her, Pei Congling was watching her departing back with a thoughtful look. She curved her lips, then let out a soft laugh, lightly tapping her fingers on her knee. She thought to herself that Shen Xi’s attitude was a bit off.
Normally, Shen Xi had never questioned her decisions, but today, after interacting with Yao Anna, she was repeatedly questioning her and even standing up for the Omega.
Could it be that this blockhead was finally figuring things out?
“Tsk.”
Pei Congling shook her head. She hoped she was overthinking things because she felt Yao Anna was dangerous. Moreover, Yao Anna had an engagement with Jiang Nian’an. Even though Yao Anna didn’t want to admit it, it was an undeniable fact. She didn’t want to see Shen Xi stand against Jiang Nian’an because of one Yao Anna…
After all, Jiang Nian’an was notoriously ruthless and deeply manipulative. Shen Xi would probably be no match for her.
Hotel.
Yao Anna stood by the floor-to-ceiling window with her arms crossed. She looked down at the black Bentley parked by the roadside, her eyes icy. Her current appearance indeed matched Pei Congling’s assessment of her; her entire being exuded a dangerous aura.
It had been an hour, and Jiang Nian’an still hadn’t left. Was she planning to wait there for her?
And she was that fierce rabbit!
Yao Anna let out a cold snort, drew the heavy curtains, and returned to the living room to sit on the sofa. She was staying in the presidential suite, which was spacious and comfortable. She thought for a moment, then picked up her phone and called the hotel’s front desk.
“Hello, esteemed Ms. Yao, how may I assist you?”
Yao Anna ordered some room service. She rubbed her growling stomach; she was a bit hungry.
Unknowingly, the whole morning had been wasted at the Yao family residence, but at least she had retrieved the inheritance her mother left her.
It was time to reward her stomach properly.
As for Jiang Nian’an, who was seemingly “waiting by the tree” downstairs, she didn’t care. As long as she wasn’t hungry, that was all that mattered. Besides, she wasn’t planning on going out this afternoon. Whether Jiang Nian’an was hungry or not was her own business. If she starved, so be it; it would save Yao Anna the trouble of finding a way to take revenge on the woman.
What she didn’t know was that as soon as she hung up the phone, an internal hotel call was already being placed to Jiang Nian’an.
“President Jiang, Ms. Yao in Presidential Suite 808 has ordered a Kobe steak and a bottle of Lafite wine.”
Steak and red wine?
Jiang Nian’an raised an eyebrow. It seemed Yao Anna was in a good mood after getting her inheritance and certainly knew how to enjoy life.
“Hmm. Call me when it’s ready. I’ll personally deliver it.”
The other person seemed a little surprised. She paused, then said respectfully, “Understood. I’ll pass on the instructions now.”
Jiang Nian’an casually hung up the phone and looked up at the window with the drawn curtains. She had known the Omega was standing there just now. The two had been looking at each other from a distance through the window, but her car windows were tinted with black privacy film, so outsiders couldn’t see what was happening inside.
Not to mention the distance between them.
Thinking about seeing her again soon, a smile crept into Jiang Nian’an’s eyes. Yao Anna couldn’t possibly think she would honestly just wait for her downstairs, could she?
A smart person like Jiang Nian’an would never do something so time-consuming, labor-intensive, and unrewarding.
Having finally found an opportunity to meet alone, Jiang Nian’an wanted to have a proper talk with Yao Anna.
From her recollection, they truly hadn’t met in private for a very, very long time. The old Yao Anna used to cling to her like a piece of plaster. Now that her attitude had suddenly done a 180-degree turn, Jiang Nian’an was actually a bit unaccustomed to it.
Now, they truly needed a chance to be alone.
