- Chapter 2 - Must Become Brave
Before class that afternoon, Xu Qingfeng went to the teacher’s office and placed her registration form. She suddenly glimpsed a registration form belonging to Xia Yiqiu prominently displayed on the next desk.
Xu Qingfeng immediately took back her form, returned to the classroom, and began filling it out.
“Qingfeng, why did you sign up?” Gao Zhi asked with a puzzled expression.
“Suddenly became very interested.”
Xu Qingfeng didn’t know how to explain her little secret, so she resorted to her usual persona.
When she returned to the office, Liu Li happened to arrive and took the three registration forms.
“Class monitor, why did you sign up? And Gao Zhi, didn’t I say not to sign up casually?” Liu Li frowned tightly.
“Teacher, I saw that the next class has three people signing up. Wouldn’t it look bad if our class has fewer than three?”
She was gambling with the teacher. Based on his past behavior, there was a high probability that Old Liu would agree, but she was still a little nervous.
Liu Li pondered for a moment, recalling the principal’s emphasis on comprehensive development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics, and labor during the club formation meeting.
“Alright, Class Monitor, you need to set an example and supervise the two of them to focus more on their studies.”
“I understand, Teacher, I will.”
Xu Qingfeng was ecstatic inside, but maintained a cool facade.
Finally, she had a chance to openly look at her.
She had been fond of Xia Yiqiu since that first glance during military training, but had only recently realized her true feelings.
Before, she only knew that love was ephemeral, and that “beauty resided within books.” Now, she still read books, but her mind often wandered to Xia Yiqiu’s face.
She felt like she was turning into two people, her inner self growing increasingly unlike her usual self.
Back then, watching Xia Yiqiu introduce herself, she was inexplicably reminded of the “little fairy” from her childhood, whose appearance was already vague.
But she felt that Xia Yiqiu was a fairy.
During military training, when forming the formation, Xu Qingfeng and Xia Yiqiu were placed in the last row of the girls’ column due to their height, which was nearly $1.7$ meters. They were separated by Gao Zhi.
Gao Zhi and Xu Qingfeng talked very familiarly, but Gao Zhi didn’t recognize Xia Yiqiu.
She only remembered a sweet little girl named “Tiantian” from her childhood.
When the instructor called for a break, Gao Zhi ran off to buy water, and Xia Yiqiu approached Xu Qingfeng.
“Why were you so late today?”
Xia Yiqiu had noticed Xu Qingfeng the moment she entered. She was naturally a “Ji-zai” (a term for a lesbian), and she had realized in middle school that she liked girls. Xu Qingfeng perfectly fit her aesthetic.
Seeing Xu Qingfeng’s momentary blank look just now, Xia Yiqiu had recognized that Xu Qingfeng was that “little bookworm,” but seeing that Xu Qingfeng hadn’t reacted yet, she decided not to reminisce about the past.
The Ji-zai principle: No dating straight girls.
“I went to get a tetanus shot.”
Xu Qingfeng replied, then felt too shy to look at her.
“I see.”
Xia Yiqiu was intrigued, but this person was truly a block of wood. Her innocent gaze made one hesitant to tease her.
After military training ended, both Xu Qingfeng and Gao Zhi added Xia Yiqiu as a friend, but since they weren’t in the same class afterward, there was little contact. Mostly, their names appeared as the first place in the liberal arts and science categories on the “Top 100 Help List,” or they might meet when submitting Chinese homework.
The change happened after Gao Zhi’s confession recently. That day, Gao Zhi hesitantly pulled Xu Qingfeng aside.
“Qingfeng, I need to tell you something.” Gao Zhi looked very nervous.
“Didn’t I tell you I got an international pen pal a while ago? I found out… I’m in love with her.”
“Isn’t she a girl?” Xu Qingfeng was a little confused.
Gao Zhi retorted: “Bookworm, what era are we in now? Don’t limit your perspective. Love knows no gender.”
“One question: Do you support me?”
Xu Qingfeng was apprehensive. For some reason, Xia Yiqiu’s face flashed through her mind, but considering practical reasons, she sternly warned Gao Zhi.
“You need to think carefully. This is not a joke.”
Xu Qingfeng’s original intention was for Gao Zhi to take relationships seriously and not act on impulse. Unexpectedly, Gao Zhi immediately labeled Xu Qingfeng as a “straight girl.”
To her surprise, ever since hearing Gao Zhi’s “love knows no gender” remark, Xu Qingfeng started looking at Xia Yiqiu differently.
She constantly thought of Xia Yiqiu, and whenever she passed the science class, she liked to glance at her with her peripheral vision. But when they were about to meet, she felt too embarrassed to look at her, so she always avoided her.
Xu Qingfeng was a very clever person. After a brief period of confusion, she realized: she liked Xia Yiqiu.
Almost everyone who signed up was accepted; there were over a hundred students from both the first and second grades.
Gao Zhi cheered excitedly.
“Long live the Old Class!”
Even Han Feng was humming a jaunty tune.
“Today is a good day, everything you wish for will come true~.”
Everything will come true? So Xu Qingfeng set a few goals for herself.
- Look Xia Yiqiu directly in the eyes.
- Get closer to Xia Yiqiu.
Soon, Teacher Du, who was in charge of the club, added everyone to a group and announced that the club election, including President, Vice President, Head of Editorial Department, Head of Drama Department, Head of Network Department, and Head of Publicity Department, would take place tomorrow night in the lecture hall.
That evening, Xu Qingfeng returned home. Her parents, to her surprise, were already home. After dinner, Xu Qingfeng went back to her room.
Today was a good start, Xu Qingfeng encouraged herself.
Gao Zhi sent a message.
“Qingfeng, I was dumped, crying.”
“?”
When did Gao Zhi start dating?
“It’s the cross-border pen pal from last time. I didn’t dare to tell you. She said long-distance relationships are unreliable.”
“See? I told you not to rush into things without thinking.”
“Ah, Xu Qingfeng, you straight girl, you don’t understand!” Gao Zhi said indignantly.
Xu Qingfeng truly didn’t understand. She didn’t understand Gao Zhi’s fleeting romances, nor did she know that bravery was a necessary prerequisite for everything that happened.
She looked at Xia Yiqiu’s WeChat, wanting to send a message of comfort, expressing her delight at working together, but she kept typing and deleting it.
Xia Yiqiu was about to fall asleep but, for some reason, opened Xu Qingfeng’s chat interface. Seeing the “typing…” appear and disappear, she thought it must be a big illusion.
Her childhood friend Tiantian sent a message.
“Qiuqiu, I broke up with him.”
“Why? Didn’t you say that Gaolegao (High-Low) was interesting?”
Tiantian, whose name was Li Tian, was Xia Yiqiu’s childhood friend, but she had moved to Country A for school after graduating from elementary school because of her parents’ work.
“Long distance is hard enough, let alone international. Better to break up before I fall too deep,” Li Tian said helplessly. Gaolegao hadn’t thought about the future at all; he was like a child, always reckless.
Xia Yiqiu comforted Li Tian and fell asleep shortly after.
The next day, as Xu Qingfeng comforted the sickly Gao Zhi sitting next to her, Xia Yiqiu walked in. Her face was fair with a rosy tint, and her high ponytail made her features appear exceptionally delicate, immediately attracting the attention of half the classroom.
Xia Yiqiu saw Gao Zhi leaning against Xu Qingfeng, looking distressed, but with both hands restlessly draped around Xu Qingfeng’s neck. She involuntarily furrowed her brow.
Hmm, no sense of personal boundaries. Definitely needs further observation.
Then Xia Yiqiu sat down in the seat next to Xu Qingfeng.
“Qingfeng, what’s wrong with Gao Zhi?” She asked, then fixed her gaze on Gao Zhi’s restless hands.
Thinking it was Gao Zhi’s private matter, Xu Qingfeng decided to keep it confidential.
“She’s… having intermittent sadness.” Xu Qingfeng hesitated for a few seconds, then replied after thinking.
“So that’s it.” But Xia Yiqiu didn’t think so.
As expected of childhood sweethearts, their relationship is truly good.
Xia Yiqiu’s tone was cool. She sat quietly and said nothing more.
Xu Qingfeng felt helpless at Xia Yiqiu’s sudden coldness but didn’t want to miss this good opportunity for a conversation.
“Yiqiu, do you have a position you want to run for?” She shook off Gao Zhi’s hand, leaned closer to Xia Yiqiu, and asked. Before Xia Yiqiu could reply, a shout came from the side.
“How dare you, Xu Qingfeng, you traitor! I’m this miserable, and you abandon me!” Gao Zhi’s voice was quite loud, attracting the attention of many people. The chatting around them quieted down, and people looked over.
Oh no, why is this girl using the wrong idiom? Xu Qingfeng’s ears turned slightly red, and in a moment of urgency, she covered Gao Zhi’s mouth.
“Don’t talk nonsense.”
“Wuwu.”
“Wuh did I shay?” Gao Zhi’s mind was a mess, but she was still stubbornly talking.
“Sorry, this girl was really hit hard yesterday,” Xu Qingfeng said, full of helplessness and speaking sincerely.
“Oh? She does look quite hurt.”
Xia Yiqiu watched their squabble with crossed arms, looking unhurriedly composed.
Jian se wang yi (seeing beauty forgets justice)—not bad.
“As for me, I plan to run for President.”
“That’s great. You can definitely do it,” Xu Qingfeng quickly agreed.
Gao Zhi was shocked. Xu Qingfeng had clearly told her last night that she was going to run for President. Why was she encouraging someone else now?
“But you shay you wuh gonna run?”
Xu Qingfeng covered her mouth even tighter and gave an awkward smile.
“I have a lot of confidence in you too,” Xia Yiqiu said. “Let’s cheer each other on.”
“Mhm!”
The election results were out. Xia Yiqiu became President, with one extra vote from Qingfeng.
For the students of Weicheng No. 1 High School, both were academic prodigies far beyond their reach—one sunny and gentle, the other cool and beautiful—like the Gemini stars of the liberal arts and sciences. Both were so dazzling that the voting was a dilemma. The votes were closely entangled, and Xia Yiqiu narrowly won when the last vote was announced.
Xu Qingfeng was Vice President and Head of the Editorial Department. Han Feng was the Head of the Drama Department, and Gao Zhi was a member of the Drama Department team.
Due to her overwhelming sadness, Gao Zhi left right after the election. Next, Teacher Du held a small meeting for the officers of the Psychology Club.
The meeting mainly concerned the design of the club’s motto and logo, which would be handled by the Editorial Department and supervised by the President.
The rain had started falling at some unknown time. The surroundings were particularly quiet, covered by the sound of the rain. Xu Qingfeng looked out the window and couldn’t help but feel lucky that she brought her umbrella every day.
After the meeting, she saw Xia Yiqiu standing under the covered walkway. Xia Yiqiu had just declined a boy’s invitation to share an umbrella. Xu Qingfeng’s hesitation returned, and she stared intently at Xia Yiqiu’s back.
This is bad. If I keep this up, Goal 2 will be impossible.
I must be proactive, proactive!
But will this be too abrupt?
Is she waiting for someone else?
Xia Yiqiu saw her hesitant movements out of the corner of her eye and put her hand over her head, pretending to brave the rain and go back.
Xu Qingfeng finally walked up quickly.
“Yiqiu, let’s walk together. We can discuss the design.”
The umbrella she had just opened subconsciously leaned toward Xia Yiqiu’s direction.
Xia Yiqiu’s eyes curved, and she said with a smile.
“Sure!”
She had waited here for so long. The little coward had finally stepped forward.
