- Chapter 18 - Fireworks in Full Bloom
“Big meat skewers, ten dollars for three big meat skewers.”
“Delicious deep-fried chicken strips, five dollars a serving.”
“Look here, student, freshly squeezed watermelon juice.”
Every vendor was busy preparing food with great enthusiasm, never forgetting to call out continuously.
The prices in Wei City were not expensive; even the night market could be called good quality and inexpensive. Gao Zhi was buying wildly with her huge amount of pocket money.
“Qingfeng, let’s eat this.”
Gao Zhi’s eyes lit up when she saw the grilled gluten, its cumin aroma wafting out. As the boss sprinkled a handful of sesame seeds, the eyes of the surrounding people changed; each was a hungry, drooling wolf.
“Okay.”
Xu Qingfeng preferred to listen to others when she was out. Gao Zhi knew her nature and politely asked.
“Qingfeng, let’s eat that.”
Stinky tofu! Gao Zhi really wanted to eat it.
“That works too.”
Xu Qingfeng had no objections.
After an hour and a half at the night market, Gao Zhi had dragged Xu Qingfeng to queue here and stroll there, finally dumping a large pile of food on Xu Qingfeng before slipping away herself.
Xu Qingfeng sat on a long bench at the entrance of the night market. With the official start of autumn, the night air was a little chilly. Xu Qingfeng pulled her hat down, holding a large meat skewer in her hand. From a distance, she looked like a food-hoarding hamster.
The crowds flowed and crossed, with an endless stream of pedestrians.
This Gao Zhi, she’s gone again.
“Awooo.” She fiercely bit off a chunk of meat, deciding to just eat Gao Zhi’s portion.
Xu Qingfeng was sitting in the most conspicuous spot, so she wasn’t worried that Gao Zhi wouldn’t be able to find her when she came back to her senses.
On the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, besides family and friends reuniting, many young couples came out for a walk.
The single Xu Qingfeng was completely unaware that she was sitting in a sanctuary for couples. She was leaning against a massive banyan tree. This thousand-year-old ancient tree was the landmark of Wei City’s central plaza, covered with countless red prayer strips, bearing witness to the happy marriages of generations of Wei City residents.
The area surrounding the banyan tree was lined with benches. Other couples would choose to sit on the side seats, where they could do things without being easily noticed, but Xu Qingfeng had chosen the prominent spot at the night market entrance.
There were several children selling roses near the plaza. Many boys in couples were pushed into buying one or two, at ten dollars a stem—not expensive, especially since it was the Mid-Autumn Festival.
The fireworks show was about to start in five minutes, and Gao Zhi still hadn’t returned. Xu Qingfeng wasn’t too anxious, though; what was so great about fireworks?
She had saved the skewers for Gao Zhi, and now she started eating her stinky tofu.
She took a small taste—it was alright.
Just as she was about to take another bite, a beautiful little girl appeared in front of Xu Qingfeng.
The girl was wearing a cute maid outfit with a red bow tie at the collar, and her small face looked timid.
“Big brother, buy a rose.”
? Big brother.
Xu Qingfeng was so shocked that she froze the fork halfway to her mouth.
Thinking carefully, she also bore some responsibility. The hat covered her medium-length hair, and the jacket she casually grabbed today was in the neutral style that her father appreciated, plus her original tall height—it was barely understandable.
But she still couldn’t accept it.
“Little sister, I’m an older sister, not a big brother,” Xu Qingfeng tried her best to suppress her usual cold tone, using a gentle voice, afraid of scaring the little girl.
The girl in front of her was still flustered by her misjudgment, the nervousness on her small face growing more evident.
“Ah, I’m sorry, big sister,” she quickly bowed in apology, waiting for the person in front of her to reply.
“It’s okay,” Xu Qingfeng smiled kindly at her.
Little kids are so cute.
She had noticed this little girl earlier. The surrounding children were all bold enough to step forward and had sold many flowers, but only this girl was standing in the corner.
She didn’t expect her to come and ask her.
The little girl turned around, about to leave in disappointment.
She didn’t want the girl’s eyes to be filled with disappointment; her eyes were twinkling, exactly like Yi Qiu’s.
“Little sister, I want to buy one.”
The little girl’s footsteps paused. “Really, big sister?” Her eyes sparkled, shining like the stars in the dark night.
“Yes, come, I’ll scan your code.” Xu Qingfeng gave an affirmative answer.
The little girl visibly livened up, handing her the QR code and the flower.
Before leaving, she didn’t forget to give a blessing, “Big sister, I wish you and the person you like forever happiness together!”
I will try, Xu Qingfeng thought to herself.
The first firework was about to ascend and bloom in the night sky. The voice of a little girl asking came from not far away,
“Big sister, do you want a flower?”
Was the little girl trying to change her strategy and sell to girls?
She looked over with an inquisitive gaze. “No, little sister.”
After the other girl refused, she looked up at Xu Qingfeng.
Whoosh, bang!
The fireworks exploded, and the brilliant light shone on everyone’s faces. The surrounding couples had already begun quietly embracing. The atmosphere was fervent, passionate, and bustling. The surrounding clamorous sounds converged, but the silent time seemed to stop between her and her.
Whether the love wished for under the fireworks would be long-lasting was unknown, but the sudden heart flutter and romance of this moment would remain forever.
Xu Qingfeng felt her heart was about to burst. The girl was wearing a red dress with a jacket, her long hair was down, and she was looking at her with clear, bright black eyes, which were overflowing with brilliance.
At this moment, standing there was Xia Yiqiu, and Xu Qingfeng was willing to do anything for her.
“Okay.”
The little girl’s disappointed voice broke the still time. This time, she wasn’t too upset. Taking the first brave step and succeeding gave her the courage to move forward and not fear setbacks.
“Yiqiu, what a coincidence!” Xu Qingfeng said to Xia Yiqiu as she approached.
Not a coincidence, I’ve been looking for you for a long time, Xia Yiqiu thought, looking at the person who was grinning foolishly across from her.
“Where did you get the flower? Did someone give it to you?” Xia Yiqiu’s questioning voice carried a cold undertone.
“No, I bought it from that little sister just now.” Xu Qingfeng quickly waved her hands while holding a pile of things, afraid that the person in front of her would misunderstand.
Oh? Xia Yiqiu raised an eyebrow, still dissatisfied.
“Are you buying it to give to someone?” Who does this person want to give it to?
“That’s even more untrue, I bought it because I saw no one was buying, just now…” After Xu Qingfeng’s explanation, the person in front of her reluctantly accepted the answer.
“I see.”
At that moment, a romantic pink firework bloomed, cheers erupted around them, and some people even proposed on the spot.
Xu Qingfeng grew bolder, blushingly handing the rose to Xia Yiqiu.
“Yiqiu, I—I don’t like roses, you take it.”
She pushed it forward with force, turning her head shyly away, not daring to look into the other person’s eyes.
Xia Yiqiu’s lips curved. This dummy has quite the talent for creating misunderstandings. She reluctantly accepted the rose.
“Fine, it might be alright as a decoration.”
However, her increasingly bright smile and flushed earlobes betrayed her true feelings.
Seeing the flower in Xia Yiqiu’s hand, Xu Qingfeng became more active.
“Yiqiu, quick, sit down. This is the perfect spot to watch the fireworks.”
Xu Qingfeng’s chosen location was eye-catching, but honestly, it was an excellent place to view the beautiful scene.
After Xia Yiqiu sat down, she saw the stinky tofu on the bench and felt a little hungry.
Xu Qingfeng understood immediately. As another firework burst brilliantly, she forked a piece of stinky tofu and brought it to the girl’s mouth.
“Come, ah.”
“Mmm.”
Before Xia Yiqiu could react, food was stuffed into her mouth as soon as she opened it.
Smelly and fragrant, it was actually quite delicious.
“Another piece,” Xia Yiqiu said with puffed cheeks.
“Sure, come, open your mouth.” Xu Qingfeng was happy to serve the other party.
After finishing the bowl of stinky tofu, Xu Qingfeng set it aside, planning to throw it away later.
The two sat and watched the fireworks.
Amidst the blossoming fireworks, Xu Qingfeng only knew how to smile at Xia Yiqiu.
Xia Yiqiu looked at the person’s brilliant smile across from her. The person’s eyes were filled only with her, and her heart couldn’t help but stir.
Perhaps, I am different to her.
It was indeed different. This brief moment of tenderness was broken by a shrill scream.
Gao Zhi, carrying the mung bean cake she had queued half an hour for, angrily denounced Xu Qingfeng.
“Xu Dummy, why is all my stinky tofu gone!!!”
The two people in front of Gao Zhi felt a little awkward.
Xu Qingfeng was rarely in the wrong; she had only intended to taste a little earlier.
“Look, big meat skewers, how about you eat this?” she suggested to Gao Zhi guiltily.
“Hmph.” Gao Zhi snorted, turning her head away to indicate she wouldn’t eat them.
Xia Yiqiu took Xu Qingfeng’s hand.
“Let’s go, Dummy, we’ll buy her a new one.”
Xu Qingfeng stared at their clasped hands.
“Oh, okay.”
Gao Zhi was left alone, with the autumn wind chilling her. She looked at the intimate young couples around her.
Gao Zhi wanted to instantly teleport to Country A.
