- Chapter 11 - The Story of Nian
Bo Yizhou’s hand passed gently through Gu Wancheng’s hair, starting from the roots to blow-dry it. With his movements, the originally dripping hair was already half-dry.
Gu Wancheng sat with his legs together and his hands on his knees. He looked bewildered and dazed; it was clear that his soul had already left his body.
He wondered how things had unexpectedly developed this way.
The situation went back to half an hour ago. Bo Yizhou suddenly said something that made Gu Wancheng jump in fright. “Why are you leaning so close!”
Bo Yizhou said nothing. He took the hair dryer from Gu Wancheng’s hand and placed the blame on Chaochao. “Chaochao said you were being naughty, so he asked me to come and check.”
Gu Wancheng thought, “Child, you have truly ruined me.”
He wanted to go and pick the boy up immediately to give his bottom a good smacking so he would stop talking all day long.
Gu Wancheng snatched the hair dryer back and held it in his arms, looking at the man warily. “Fine, you have checked. You can leave now.”
Under Gu Wancheng’s expectant gaze, Bo Yizhou slowly uttered two words, “I will not.”
Gu Wancheng screamed internally. Big brother! You are breaking your character profile! Do you know that!
He really wanted to stand up, grab the man’s shoulders, and shake him. It would be great if he could shake back the calm and self-restrained CEO from the book.
Bo Yizhou did not just speak; he also intended to take action.
Gu Wancheng watched helplessly as the man reached into his arms, pulled the hair dryer out by force, and insisted on drying his hair for him. This led to the scene that had just occurred.
“It should be dry now.”
As soon as he spoke, Gu Wancheng was shocked by his own raspy voice and quickly shut his mouth.
Bo Yizhou nodded after a careful inspection and said, “It is about done.”
“Then let us stop. I heard that blowing it too dry is bad for the hair.”
Bo Yizhou put down the hair dryer, ruffled his hair, and said, “Wait a little while before going to sleep.”
Gu Wancheng nodded hurriedly. If he stayed any longer, his social anxiety would surely flare up.
On the other side, Chaochao had long grown impatient. When he saw Gu Wancheng walking over, he was almost on the verge of tears.
Gu Wancheng nearly laughed. He suppressed his amusement and walked over. “Alright, alright, I am back. Go to sleep now.”
Chaochao looked up, the exhaustion in his voice unable to be hidden. “I want to hear you tell a story.”
Gu Wancheng was speechless. This was another task aimed at him, but he did not know how to tell stories. Under the child’s expectant gaze, he decided to tell the truth.
“Daddy does not know how.” He decided to shift the responsibility to the other father so it would not feel like he was the only one raising the child. “Ask your Father to tell it.”
Suddenly mentioned, the other father raised an eyebrow. He thought that if Gu Wancheng wanted to pass the buck to him, he could keep dreaming. He believed he understood Chaochao well enough to know the responsibility would not fall on him.
The result was exactly as he thought. Chaochao did not want him to tell it, and Gu Wancheng could not withstand Chaochao’s acting spoiled. He gave in.
After agreeing, Gu Wancheng massaged his forehead helplessly and glared fiercely at the person standing nearby watching the joke.
The person watching the joke looked innocent.
“Go lie down on the bed. I will tell you a story.”
Chaochao quickly lay down on the bed, pulled up the covers, and looked at Gu Wancheng with bright eyes. Seeing that Chaochao was ready, Gu Wancheng sat on the bed, pulled back the covers, and leaned against the right side of the boy.
He pulled a story he had heard before from his memory and began to speak.
“A long, long time ago, there was a fierce monster named Nian. Nian was very afraid of heat and liked to sleep. It would sleep for an entire year and only wake up at the end of the year. It would eat people and animals whenever it saw them. It was very terrifying.”
Hearing this, Chaochao immediately shrunk into the covers and whispered, “Why is Nian so bad?”
Gu Wancheng smiled and patted him. “Yes, Nian is a villain.”
He continued.
“Therefore, at the end of every year, people did not dare to stay at home. They all ran into the deep mountains to hide. From then on, every Spring Festival, people would put up red couplets, red window decorations, and the red character for good fortune. They would also set off crackling fireworks and firecrackers.”
After listening, Chaochao sighed. “No wonder we have to put up so many things during the New Year.”
Then, he changed the subject. “I am going to tell Suisui. He definitely does not know this.” After saying that, he immediately closed his eyes and went to sleep contentedly. He was not like other children who refused to sleep. He was quite easy to handle.
After Chaochao closed his eyes, Gu Wancheng looked at the person sitting in the chair. He began to feel uneasy again. Seeing that Bo Yizhou did not move, Gu Wancheng opened and closed his mouth several times. Finally, he gave up and said, “Are you not going to sleep yet?”
Once the words were out, he felt relieved. They had to face it eventually. They could not remain an unfamiliar couple forever. After all, he had not yet had any romantic progress, and now that he had a legal husband, he might as well make use of it.
Bo Yizhou stood up and walked toward him step by step. His face was well-defined, and when he did not smile, he looked a bit cold and difficult to get along with. Standing at one hundred and ninety centimeters, he looked very imposing. He had changed into pajamas that hugged his lean but muscular physique. Gu Wancheng subconsciously swallowed and his eyes drifted over the man’s body uncontrollably. Thinking of the abdominal muscles he had accidentally seen before, he lowered his eyes. He really wanted to touch them.
Feeling Gu Wancheng’s gaze lingering on him, Bo Yizhou smiled softly where Gu Wancheng could not see.
As Bo Yizhou approached, Gu Wancheng silently shrunk into the covers.
Bo Yizhou suddenly leaned toward him. Gu Wancheng was startled, but then the room fell into darkness.
It turned out he was just turning off the light. Gu Wancheng could not help but feel a bit disappointed.
In the darkness, all senses seemed to be magnified several times. The sounds of breathing and heartbeats were clear and distinct.
Suddenly, Bo Yizhou reached out and brushed Gu Wancheng’s face. He said in a low voice, “Goodnight.”
Gu Wancheng’s breathing quickened and his heart raced. He bit his lip gently and said, “Goodnight.”
He seemed to hear a laugh by his ear, or perhaps it was just a hallucination.
As soon as he lay down, sleepiness washed over him, and he soon fell into a deep sleep.
At six thirty, Bo Yizhou was already awake. He looked at Gu Wancheng’s sleeping face in a daze and pinched his cheek. The delicate skin immediately left a red mark under his rough hand. Seeing this, he let go.
He checked the time and quietly walked out of the room, letting the father and son continue sleeping.
When the sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, Gu Wancheng’s eyelashes fluttered, and he opened his eyes a second later. He blinked with a vacant expression; it was obvious he was not fully awake yet.
After lingering in bed for a few minutes, he yawned. His stomach was revolting, so he had to get up.
Seeing that Chaochao was still sleeping, he did not wake him immediately. The other side of the bed was already empty. He did not know when Bo Yizhou had gotten up.
He washed his face, and his mind finally cleared. While brushing his teeth, he thought about the things he had to do today. He had to work tomorrow.
Aside from completing his orders, there was nothing else to do today. That was great!
A while later, Gu Wancheng went to the bedside and reached out a mischievous hand to nudge Chaochao.
Chaochao, who was shaken awake, looked at him blankly. His eyes were full of grievance, as if he were questioning why he was being woken up.
“Get up. Are you not hungry?”
Chaochao touched his stomach. “Maybe I am hungry?”
“If you are hungry, you are hungry. If you are not, you are not. What does maybe I am hungry mean?”
Chaochao climbed up while feeling sleepy and looked around. “Where is Father?”
“Your Father got up a long time ago. You are like a little pig, only getting up when the sun is hitting your bottom.”
Chaochao immediately retorted, “You just got up too. Do not think I do not know. You are the little pig, and I am a tiger.”
Gu Wancheng said perfunctorily, “Fine, fine, fine. You are a tiger. Now, Mr. Tiger, go and brush your teeth.”
Chaochao saw through his perfunctoriness at a glance. He pouted and quickly climbed off the bed.
