The Romance Extras Turned Out to Be a Yuri Story - Chapter 73
In the hospital, the busy crowd moved beneath the cold, clear lights.
Zhang Qiu lay on an emergency room bed, her leg bandaged, and her face and arms scraped, which the nurse had treated.
Her injuries weren’t severe; the driver and the person she was sharing the ride with were much worse off.
Her flight had been delayed today, making it difficult to get a taxi at the airport. Seeing the other person shivering in the freezing rain, Zhang Qiu suggested they share a ride to the city before transferring—a suggestion that unfortunately led to their predicament.
Unexpectedly, on the road descending from the airport highway, the wet road due to the rain, combined with an oncoming vehicle, made the driver hastily slam on the brakes to avoid it. The car immediately rolled over.
Zhang Qiu was lucky; the back seatbelt saved her. The driver and the other passenger weren’t as fortunate.
The front passenger was pinned directly by the overturned car and took a long time to rescue. His left leg was at risk of necrosis, possibly requiring amputation.
The driver was also unconscious, suspected of a brain injury. Out of the three, Zhang Qiu was the least injured.
Under the fluorescent lights, Zhang Qiu’s face was pale.
She lay on the bed, the nurse having pulled the curtain to give her a little private space.
She never expected to encounter a car accident on her way back.
In the moment between life and death, Zhang Qiu thought of many things: her grandmother losing her granddaughter, the show she promised to finish recording so the production wouldn’t have to air a blank slate, and Lin Luoluo—she hadn’t even seen her for the last time.
Lying in the hospital felt like another life.
Zhang Qiu stared blankly at the ceiling, the pain from her injuries vaguely throbbing. She struggled to get out of bed when, suddenly, the curtain was pulled open, and Lin Xiangdong strode in.
“Zhang Qiu, are you okay!”
Lin Luoluo rushed forward, but her body passed right through Zhang Qiu.
Zhang Qiu only felt a gust of cold air, shook her head, and gave a bitter smile: “I’m fine.”
“Don’t move with those injuries! Where are you trying to go?” Lin Xiangdong quickly stopped her.
Zhang Qiu pursed her lips and said, “I want to go see the surgery rooms.”
“Why? What for?” Lin Xiangdong asked.
“The driver and the other passenger are still in surgery,” Zhang Qiu said, her lips trembling with anguish. “After the accident, they were severely injured and haven’t come out of surgery yet.”
Lin Xiangdong sighed and said, “Wait here. I’ll go borrow a wheelchair to push you.”
Lin Luoluo watched Zhang Qiu slump against the bed, her expression desolate. Blood was faintly seeping through the bandage on her injured leg, and the scrapes on her face were severe. She stood heartbrokenly in front of Zhang Qiu.
“Don’t worry. Good people are always protected by fate. They’ll be fine, too.”
Unfortunately, Zhang Qiu couldn’t hear her. Her gaze was anxiously fixed ahead.
The emergency room was very busy at night. The combination of rain and nighttime had caused several car accidents, completely congesting the emergency room. Since Zhang Qiu arrived earlier, she had a bed to lie on, but later casualties were treating their wounds directly on the floor.
Zhang Qiu couldn’t bear to see the elderly and children sitting on the ground. She struggled to stand up and said, “There’s a bed here.”
The nurse treating the wounded thanked her and placed the child on the bed first. Zhang Qiu leaned on one leg nearby. Lin Luoluo wished so much to help her, but she couldn’t.
Fortunately, Lin Xiangdong quickly returned with a portable wheelchair, helped Zhang Qiu sit down, and pushed her toward the operating rooms.
Several surgeries were happening simultaneously. The red lights outside the operating rooms flashed, unsettling everyone. As soon as one red light went out, family members would swarm forward.
Lin Xiangdong asked, “Are they there?”
Zhang Qiu didn’t know. They had all been brought in at the same time, but the driver and the other passenger were immediately rushed into surgery—their conditions were extremely critical.
She slowly said, “Let’s wait.”
The rain subtly intensified in the night. The cold draft in the hallway made Zhang Qiu’s face turn pale. She had injuries on her body, too, but her regular exercise helped her resist the cold. Still, she felt gusts of chilling air, making her body shiver.
Lin Xiangdong was oblivious to her discomfort. Lin Luoluo worriedly crouched in front of Zhang Qiu and said to her, “It’s too cold here. Let’s go stand somewhere out of the wind. Your hands are freezing.”
Zhang Qiu, who had been looking down, suddenly lifted her head after Lin Luoluo spoke, her eyes locking intently with Lin Luoluo’s. Lin Luoluo froze, muttering, “Zhang Qiu…”
Did you feel my presence?
Zhang Qiu looked at the empty space in front of her, frowning in confusion. Her lips were blue with cold. Finally, she spoke: “Dongzi, I’m a bit cold.”
Lin Xiangdong then realized Zhang Qiu’s condition. He hurriedly pushed her to the information desk, borrowed a blanket from the nurse, and wrapped her up.
Lin Xiangdong chose a spot out of the wind to wait, where he could both see the operating rooms and avoid the strong drafts in the hallway.
Zhang Qiu was bundled up like a silkworm cocoon, but her eyes subconsciously focused on the spot she had just been in. She had briefly felt the presence of something in front of her.
Zhang Qiu shook her head, thinking she was just imagining things.
Although there were many legends about the hospital, Zhang Qiu had never believed in them since she was a child.
If a divine being truly existed, she wished it would let Lin Luoluo wake up instead.
In moments of despair, people cling to the last shred of hope. If praying could awaken Lin Luoluo, Zhang Qiu would be willing to believe.
Time slowly passed, and the lights in all the operating rooms went out.
Zhang Qiu’s worst fear had come true.
The driver remained unconscious, with the possibility of becoming vegetative. The passenger she had invited to share the ride had to have his necrotic left leg amputated.
A single car accident brought immeasurable grief to two families.
Zhang Qiu, the only one who was largely unscathed, felt not luck, but a heavy burden of self-reproach.
Lin Xiangdong pushed her out of the hospital, trying his best to comfort her, saying, “Look on the bright side, everyone is still alive, aren’t they?”
Zhang Qiu nodded, then suddenly said in a hoarse voice, “I think this car accident was very strange.”
Lin Xiangdong looked at the back of Zhang Qiu’s head.
Zhang Qiu’s injuries weren’t serious enough for hospitalization; she only needed to come to the hospital regularly to change her dressing. He planned to take Zhang Qiu to his home to look after her. After all, Zhang Qiu only had an elderly grandmother at home, and it wasn’t suitable for her to be the caregiver.
His home had a maid, a caregiver, and many people who could lend a hand.
While thinking this, Lin Xiangdong slowly said, “What else could it be but an accident? It was so dark, and it was raining. Maybe the other driver just took a wrong lane.”
Zhang Qiu carefully recalled the incident.
She was sitting in the back seat behind the driver. The driver was a veteran taxi driver who had been driving for years and should have been very familiar with the route from the airport to the city. Moreover, there was nothing unusual before the accident; the other car just hit them in an instant.
Logically, a driver operating a car at night, especially with oncoming traffic, should use low beams. However, the opposing car was driving in the dark, as if it was deliberately waiting there, spotted them, and crashed directly into them.
Zhang Qiu told Lin Xiangdong her suspicions. Lin Xiangdong gasped in realization.
“You’re saying the other person did it on purpose? Why? Was he the driver’s enemy? Did he know the driver would take this route? Or was it you? And how could he have predicted that? That doesn’t make sense!”
Lin Xiangdong showed no other reaction, insisting Zhang Qiu was overthinking things. Rainy and slippery roads only made traffic accidents a matter of bad luck. Lin Luoluo, however, felt a sudden jolt.
He Jin also died in a car accident.
Zhang Qiu’s situation was eerily similar to He Jin’s. The culprit didn’t even bother to change the method, trying to cause death by staging a traffic accident.
Is she insane? Is she that confident that no one will trace it back to her?
Lin Luoluo’s heart went cold.
Lan Yingying was resorting to any means necessary to eliminate rivals—she had become completely demonic.
These were vibrant human lives, not a game where everyone gets a chance to start over.
The sky was very dark in the early morning. The wind was strong, and the raindrops formed lines that were then scattered by the wind. Lin Luoluo’s soul form flickered indistinctly. Lin Xiangdong helped Zhang Qiu into the car. Through the window, Zhang Qiu thought she saw a white figure flash across the front of the car, but with another blink, the view was just pitch black.
Lin Xiangdong got into the car, complaining, “This damn rain, when will it stop!”
Zhang Qiu withdrew her gaze. Lin Luoluo floated in and sat beside her.
The rain beat against the car, making a loud pitter-patter that forced people to speak loudly.
“There’s been too much rain this year.”
Lin Xiangdong started the car: “If this keeps up, not only will houses get moldy, but people will too.”
“It hasn’t rained like this in previous years.”
Zhang Qiu acknowledged him with an “Mhm.”
“People online are saying the end of the world is coming early. If this rain continues, I think there might be something to that.”
Zhang Qiu didn’t speak. Lin Xiangdong was used to her usual silence.
“If it were the end of the world, I wouldn’t work anymore. I’d go home and spend time with my family. What about you? If the world were ending, who would you want to be with?” Lin Xiangdong asked.
Zhang Qiu’s mind subconsciously flashed to Lin Luoluo’s adorable face, and then her grandmother. She paused, her voice slightly drifting in the night: “It would probably be my grandmother.”
“Right. You’re a homebody like me. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have stayed here for your internship,” Lin Xiangdong lamented. “Time flies so fast.”
Zhang Qiu looked out the window. Suddenly, a light flashed in the distance. She thought she was seeing things, but the light grew brighter and brighter. A car behind them was speeding toward them like mad.
Zhang Qiu’s voice was distorted: “Dongzi! There’s a car behind us!”
“Huh? What?” Lin Xiangdong instinctively slammed the brakes. Bang! The car spun around on the road and stopped.
Bang! Bang! Both rows of airbags deployed. Before Lin Xiangdong could react, the car that had hit them once crashed into them again, sending Lin Xiangdong’s car directly off the road.
“Shit!” Lin Xiangdong cursed, instantly losing consciousness.
Lin Luoluo was frantic.
In the moment of impact, her soul form was flung out of the car. She could only watch helplessly as the black car drove straight away after the collision. The rain rushed down onto the wheat field. Finally, a passing car noticed the accident, called the police, and summoned an ambulance. The flashing neon lights completely illuminated the pitch-black night sky.
“Miss, the mission is complete.”
Slap! Lan Yingying slapped the newcomer across the face.
“What have you done?”
“M-Miss, didn’t you say she couldn’t leave the hospital alive…”
“Did I tell you to injure innocent people?!” Lan Yingying glared furiously at her subordinate. “The Zhang woman dying is one thing! Who told you to hurt the Lin family! If Lin Xiangdong is harmed, you will pay with your life!”
“Miss!”
“Worthless!”
Lan Yingying kicked the subordinate away, then waved: “Get the car ready!! I’m going to the hospital!”
