The Romance Extras Turned Out to Be a Yuri Story - Chapter 61.2
The beautiful calico cat had a very gentle and affectionate nature. Lin Luoluo cautiously reached out a hand, and the cat immediately rubbed her head against it. After petting its round head a few times, a sense of happiness welled up in Lin Luoluo.
Zhang Qiu went to get some tools, canned food, and treats, putting them all into a bag. Lin Luoluo played with the cats and dogs in the club for a while, and then, seeing Zhang Qiu’s actions, she curiously asked, “Aren’t we here to see them today?”
Zhang Qiu shook her head and said, “I’m taking you to catch a cat.”
“Huh?”
Lin Luoluo was puzzled but followed Zhang Qiu out. Zhang Qiu had the bag on her back and a cage in her hand. “A black cat has been roaming around the faculty housing area. They’ve been trying to catch it for days but haven’t succeeded. The black cat is too wary. I want to try my luck.”
Lin Luoluo nodded.
Longhai University has a long history. In addition to teaching buildings, labs, and student dorms, some professors also live on campus, which has gradually evolved into the faculty housing area. Living on campus is convenient for classes, and they can stay there for retirement.
The area was quiet and secluded, with large deciduous trees lining the road, their branches spreading wide. Each tree was decades old and too thick for a single person to hug. The asphalt road was neatly maintained. It took the two of them half an hour to walk there.
Rows of four-story red houses sat neatly along the road. Lin Luoluo looked around; she hadn’t visited this area much.
Zhang Qiu said, “The informant said it was spotted here. One professor had sausages hanging on their balcony, and the cat came out to steal them. After being discovered, it hid.”
Lin Luoluo couldn’t help but smile at the thought of the scene. “So, where do we look for it?”
“Let’s first check if the traps we set up earlier have caught anything.”
Zhang Qiu led Lin Luoluo up and down slopes to check the various humane traps.
The food in the traps was gone, but the black cat was nowhere to be found, suggesting it was a very cautious little cat.
Zhang Qiu saw a few paw prints in the dirt near the bushes. As she was examining the tracks, preparing to set up new traps, she suddenly heard a meow behind her.
“Is that it?”
Lin Luoluo pointed at the black cat peering out from a tree.
Zhang Qiu looked up. A black cat stood on a branch, its eyes like laser beams, leisurely licking its paws.
Lin Luoluo started to walk over, but Zhang Qiu stopped her, handing her a pair of gloves. “Stray cats have a wild streak and will scratch people. Be careful not to get caught; wear these gloves.”
Lin Luoluo smiled, accepting Zhang Qiu’s kindness.
Zhang Qiu pulled out a cat treat stick and called out softly, “Mimi,” slowly approaching.
The black cat was highly alert. As soon as Zhang Qiu took a step forward, it arched its back, making it impossible for Zhang Qiu to get closer. She also stopped Lin Luoluo, took a handful of cat food from her pocket, and scattered it on the ground.
“We won’t come closer. Will you come down and eat, please?”
The black cat flicked its tail, waited for them to move farther away, and then sat up straight, seeming to ponder. Judging by its size, it must have been hungry for a long time.
Zhang Qiu kept a certain distance from the cat with Lin Luoluo. The black cat jumped down from the tree in a few leaps, circled the cat food on the ground twice, meowed a couple of times, and then sat down to lick its paws, seemingly wary of them.
This was a highly vigilant cat, with maxed-out wilderness survival skills. Several released stray cats on campus had recent scratches, and the perpetrator was rumored to be this one. Adult male stray cats, under the influence of hormones, would fight to claim territory and attack other animals, so it was necessary to catch him and have him neutered.
The black cat waited until they walked further away before approaching the cat food and eating heartily.
“What should we do?” Lin Luoluo whispered.
Zhang Qiu put down her backpack and said to her, “You watch here, and I’ll catch him.”
Lin Luoluo watched as Zhang Qiu opened a can of meat, slowly approaching. When the black cat looked up at her, she stopped. Seeing the black cat didn’t turn and run, she cautiously moved closer until the black cat hissed at her. Only then did she place the can on the ground.
Smelling the delicious food, but with a human nearby, the cat hesitated. The cat food was quickly finished, and it was tempted by the canned meat. It chased its tail in a circle on the ground. Zhang Qiu was very patient.
Lin Luoluo watched nervously, worried the black cat would run away.
Zhang Qiu finally put the can on the ground and then took a step back. That step was enough for the black cat to hesitate no longer. It elegantly padded over, tentatively lowered its head, then raised it, observing the human’s movements. Once it was sure she wouldn’t approach, it confidently began to eat.
Zhang Qiu signaled to Lin Luoluo behind her to open the cage. With lightning speed, she grabbed the black cat by the scruff of its neck and lifted it. The black cat struggled violently. Lin Luoluo nervously lifted the cage, and Zhang Qiu quickly pressed the cat inside and closed the door.
“Your hand!” Lin Luoluo saw that Zhang Qiu’s hand had been scratched and was bleeding where she had pressed the cat down. Her eyes reddened with distress, and she said tearfully, “I knew it! You shouldn’t have given me the gloves.”
“It’s nothing,” Zhang Qiu looked at the scratch marks on her hand, which were bleeding. She thought that she had received the rabies vaccine six months ago but would need to get a booster at the infirmary later.
Lin Luoluo was still holding the cage, and the black cat was frantically jumping up and down inside. Zhang Qiu covered the cage with a cloth.
Lin Luoluo put the cage down and worriedly grabbed Zhang Qiu’s hand to look. The scratches looked deep, and blood soon began to seep out. Lin Luoluo hadn’t realized this job was so dangerous.
She anxiously asked, “How should we treat this?”
Zhang Qiu held her hand and said gently, “It’s fine. Let’s take the cat back first, and then we’ll go to the infirmary to treat it.”
“Let’s go treat it first.”
“What about all this stuff?”
Lin Luoluo silently crouched down to put on Zhang Qiu’s backpack, annoyed and reluctant to carry the cage. The cat, which had looked so adorable to her just moments ago, now seemed hateful.
But soon, she forgot her anger. The black cat kept howling pitifully the entire way. Lin Luoluo whispered, “What’s wrong with it? Is it scared?”
Zhang Qiu said, “It’s just unhappy about being caught.”
“What will happen to it?”
“We’ll keep it at the club for two days, schedule a vet for sterilization, and then release it once the wound heals.”
Lin Luoluo had thought they would find someone to adopt it. “Is it okay to release it after sterilization?”
“This type of cat isn’t suitable for living indoors; it’s not affectionate towards people. After sterilization, it won’t fight over territory due to mating instincts. It’s wary of humans. It lives here, and even after being released, someone will track and record it.”
Lin Luoluo nodded.
The two returned to the club with their large and small bags and set down the cat. The club was more crowded now. When people saw the scratches on Zhang Qiu’s hand, they shouted for her to treat it quickly.
The club had alcohol, so Zhang Qiu briefly treated it, gave some instructions to the club members, and then went to the infirmary with Lin Luoluo.
When they arrived, the infirmary was empty. Zhang Qiu called the school doctor, who rushed over and saw the scratches on Zhang Qiu’s hand, laughing, “Catching cats again? You don’t have an apprentice for that skill, do you?”
Lin Luoluo heard and asked, “Does Sister often catch cats?”
Zhang Qiu didn’t want to elaborate on her past “great achievements,” but the school doctor was familiar with her and laughed, “She’s the ‘Saintly Cat Catcher’ of Longhai University. She’s spot on every time. She’s basically neutered all the cats and dogs on campus. We thought her ‘evil claws’ would extend off-campus, but she retired and ‘sealed her heart’ after that.”
Lin Luoluo giggled, amused.
The school doctor went to prepare the medication and told Lin Luoluo to hold Zhang Qiu still.
Zhang Qiu shook her head and smiled wryly. Having had so many vaccines, she wasn’t particularly afraid of needles, but she obediently let Lin Luoluo hold her.
When it came time for the injection, the person getting the shot wasn’t afraid, but the person helping to hold her was so scared she didn’t dare open her eyes.
“All done,” Zhang Qiu put down her sleeve and grabbed Lin Luoluo’s hand.
Lin Luoluo cautiously opened one eye, made sure the needle was put away, and then said sheepishly, “I just can’t look. I’m not actually afraid of shots.” She puffed out her chest, trying to prove she wasn’t scared. “I was very brave when I was little.”
“Mhm, mhm, Luoluo is the bravest,” Zhang Qiu smiled and humored her.
“When you were little?” The school doctor took off his mask and interjected, “Haven’t you had one since you grew up? Have you gotten your vaccine? Do you want me to prepare one for you?”
He was only joking, but it scared Lin Luoluo, who immediately hid behind Zhang Qiu, not daring to speak.
The school doctor instructed, “Eat less spicy and stimulating food, avoid alcohol, and keep the wound dry. You know the rest. Come back in a week for the second booster shot.”
“Thanks,” Zhang Qiu stood up to leave.
The school doctor yawned and said, “Hurry up and go, so I can rest a bit while no one is here.”
The two left the infirmary, and the school doctor slumped back in his chair for a nap.
Outside, Lin Luoluo took Zhang Qiu’s hand and examined it. The scratch marks left by the cat were long. A simple band-aid couldn’t cover them, leaving half the scratches exposed. She said crossly, “Little Black is so mean! It should be locked up for a few more days!”
Zhang Qiu smiled, pulled her hand away, and rubbed Lin Luoluo’s hair. “It’s fine. It doesn’t hurt.”
Lin Luoluo looked up at her. The mottled shade of the trees fell upon her face, leaving the light on her features dim, but a pair of pure eyes showed deep concern: “But the doctor said you can’t get it wet.”
Zhang Qiu smiled gently. “It’s just a small scratch; it won’t be a problem.”
Lin Luoluo still wanted to say something, but Zhang Qiu lowered her head, preventing her from continuing to fuss.
Only the tree shadows swayed and rustled around them.
