The Real Heiress Just Wants to Be a Lazy Fish - Chapter 60
Chapter 60: Classmate
Jiang Zitan set the documents aside. Were it not for the conspicuous ink smudge on the paper, an outsider would have likely failed to detect the turbulence in her heart. However, in this office, there were only her and Tao Yitong, and because Yitong had her head bowed, she didn’t notice the anomaly.
“Tongtong…” Jiang Zitan hesitated, choosing her words carefully while trying to make her voice sound normal. “You… have someone you like?”
She held onto a glimmer of hope, but the moment she saw Tao Yitong nod, Jiang Zitan’s heart sank uncontrollably.
It was actually true.
Twenty minutes later, with the sound of a door opening, Jiang Zitan entered her own room. A small nightlight was on, its soft yellow glow first illuminating a pair of exceptionally eye-catching legs. Jiang Zitan’s legs were long, straight, and as white as jade, but her nightgown was long, covering everything above the knee, leaving only the beautiful curve of her calves visible.
Her freshly washed hair hung damply over her shoulders, with a stray strand resting on her collarbone, looking particularly alluring as she moved.
Tao Yitong, observing from under the covers, felt her throat go dry and instinctively swallowed hard. Is it… would it really be a loss for me to have a “spring breeze” night with a woman like this? Especially since it might significantly increase her favorability for half the effort. Tao Yitong made up her mind; it didn’t matter if System 77 couldn’t provide a “Golden Finger” for technique.
Just as Tao Yitong was lost in a flurry of “censored” thoughts, she failed to notice the changing expression on Jiang Zitan’s face.
Zitan paused at the door for a few seconds before suddenly striding forward and leaning over. One hand propped beside Tao Yitong, bringing them into an extremely intimate distance. Tao Yitong didn’t expect her to move so fast; she instinctively clutched her collar, only to hear a “click” as the dimness turned into bright light.
The girl lying on the strange bed, her hair still soft and damp on her shoulders, looked up with misty, almond eyes full of bewilderment and a hint of fear.
“This is my room.”
After a moment of silence, Jiang Zitan spoke softly with a frown. Seeing the girl’s genuine daze, the anger she had been brewing softened, sounding more like a gentle reminder than an interrogation. But in reality, she had already made a mental note against Tao Yitong.
It’s only her first day back; I have to tolerate the Little Green Tea’s overt and subtle provocations.
When Jiang Zitan leaned down, Tao Yitong thought she was going to be kissed and squeezed her eyes shut. When the intense light hit her retinas, she realized things weren’t going the way she imagined. That gesture Zitan made earlier after tapping my shoulder… did I misunderstand?
Tao Yitong kept a calm face while her hands gripped the sheets under the blanket. Facing Jiang Zitan’s frank, desireless gaze, she wanted to find a hole to crawl into. As the seconds ticked by, a thin layer of sweat formed on her fingers and feet. The woman standing over her waited silently for an answer. Half a minute felt like a lifetime.
Seeing the slight change in Zitan’s expression, Tao Yitong hurriedly raised her hands, her beautiful wet eyes flickering. “Of course I know. I just wanted to sleep with Sister.”
“Sorry for getting into Sister’s bed without permission. I thought Sister’s gesture earlier meant you agreed…” Tao Yitong pouted, then seeing the tension ease, she gave a radiant smile and raised her voice. “Sister won’t be angry, right?”
Jiang Zitan: “…” She had never met someone so difficult to deal with. However, the soft look of the “Little Green Tea” lacked the sting of a provocation; instead, her face was full of expectation. Tao Yitong’s eyes were beautiful, their natural downward tilt reminding one of an innocent puppy. Looking directly at Zitan, her focus didn’t feel offensive, but rather dissolved some of Zitan’s hostility.
Only after the girl in the quilt moved over to make enough space for another person did Jiang Zitan lift the covers and lie down beside her. Just as the light was dimmed back to nightlight mode, Zitan felt a smooth, cool hand grab her wrist under the covers—the grip was very light, carefully circling her wrist.
She turned her eyes to Tao Yitong with instinctive wariness, but the girl just let out a yawn, her face softened by the glow. Tao Yitong tugged her hand closer, her voice full of fawning: “Sister, don’t stay so far away from me.”
Jiang Zitan was silent for a moment before carefully moving a bit closer.
“By the way, what was Sister’s major in college?” Tao Yitong leaned her head on Zitan’s shoulder. Feeling the other’s stiffness, she pouted inwardly. I don’t know much about the scene, but I know some people can only be the ‘active’ one and won’t let others touch them. Is Jiang Zitan that kind of person? But since we already had that relationship, why is she dodging me now? What’s with the act?
Their age difference was negligible; Zitan was only a day or two older than the original owner, which was why the hospital swap was possible. But their polar personalities made it easy for Yitong to call her “Sister.” Compared to Zitan’s maturity, the original owner and Yitong both preferred a cuter style.
After a moment of silence, Zitan mentioned her major—dance, exactly the same as Yitong’s.
“But I’ve already graduated,” Jiang Zitan suddenly turned her head. Their faces were so close that Zitan’s breath brushed Yitong’s cheek. She stared at Yitong in the dark. “I told you before, did you forget?”
“N-no! I didn’t!” Tao Yitong shivered. She didn’t have the original owner’s full memories, especially regarding the night before she woke up. Everything was a guess.
Just as she was trying to find a way to fix her mistake, Jiang Zitan said, “It seems you remembered wrong. I was in the acting department.”
Tao Yitong: “Right, right! Acting!”
A fleeting chuckle sounded in the air. Jiang Zitan seemed to be in a better mood, but Tao Yitong was on edge, fearing the next question would trip her up. She quickly ended the conversation with a “Goodnight.”
This woman is unpredictable. Fortunately, I have the interview tomorrow. Once I become a trainee, I’ll be too busy to see her. At this thought, a joyful smile curled on Yitong’s lips.
The Nightmare
“You are arrogant and unreasonable, occupying my place without remorse, always opposing me.” “You are shameless, hooking up with my fiancé despite knowing he’s mine. Wicked.”
Outside, it was pouring rain. Jiang Zitan crossed her long legs, the curve of her lips devoid of warmth as she looked down at the girl lying helpless in the rain with a broken leg. The lights cast a cold, sharp glow on Zitan’s features. She flicked ash from her high-end suit, her gaze bottomless.
The woman’s red lips parted: “This is the price of fighting me for a man, Tao Yitong.”
The last line scared Tao Yitong awake. It was 6:00 AM. The morning light filtered through the curtains. The nightmare felt so real that the way she looked at the sleeping Jiang Zitan beside her was slightly “off.”
In the “original plot,” the conflict between the real and fake daughters centered on a man named Jiang Yang. He was the fake daughter’s fiancé, but the engagement was originally meant for the real daughter. Jiang Zitan believed Yitong shouldn’t have stolen him, while Yitong was deeply in love with him. This man served as the catalyst that made their feud lethal.
Jiang Zitan was ruthless; after taking over the Tao Group, she stripped the fake daughter of all shares. Tao Yitong died miserably on the streets, and even her parents stopped caring. But Jiang Yang wasn’t a prize; he was a toxic social climber who played both sides and cheated constantly.
The Morning
Tao Yitong moved her numbed arm, and the slight movement made the person beside her open her eyes. Jiang Zitan’s hair was messy from sleep. Being so close, they could feel each other’s breath. Zitan’s skin was a beautiful cold white, but her pajamas were buttoned to the top, showing nothing.
Tao Yitong’s heart skipped a beat. She averted her gaze, whispered “Good morning,” and fled the room, only to run into Mother Tao in the hallway. Seeing Yitong emerge from Zitan’s room, Mother Tao was stunned, then beamed with joy. She had been worried they wouldn’t get along, but their “pure friendship” was progressing fast.
The interview was at 9:00 AM. Tao Yitong ate some bread, wanting to leave early to avoid Jiang Zitan. But she was stopped at the door.
Jiang Zitan, now in a formal suit, looked cold and sharp beyond her years. Standing in her heels, she towered over Tao Yitong. “Where are you going?”
“I’m going to MT Company for an interview.”
Tao Yitong was about to say “We’re not going the same way,” but Zitan pulled an MT Company employee badge from her bag. She didn’t miss the surprise and disappointment in Yitong’s eyes. Her faint smile turned cold. “Did you truly think we weren’t going the same way, or are you just trying to avoid me?”
The “Crush”
“Are you… together?” Jiang Zitan searched her memory of their recent time together but couldn’t find a suspect.
“No, no, I haven’t told her yet. And… she has someone she likes too.” Tao Yitong looked at Zitan, her fingers fidgeting nervously.
I am not noble, Zitan thought. She even felt a trace of secret joy at Yitong’s last sentence.
Tao Yitong nearly knocked over her coffee. Is this person even trying to hide it anymore? Before she could snap, Zitan gave Li Xu an answer.
“I see.” Zhao Rouie sighed softly. “I understand. Busy yourself, Class Monitor, I’ll head out first.”
In this regard, Zhao Rou acted far more gracefully than Li Xu, keeping a distance that wasn’t annoying. Except to Tao Yitong, of course.
“Sister, you sure are popular,” Tao Yitong huffed inwardly. “That genius painter seems to have fallen for you after you saved her.”
“So I rejected her clearly.” Jiang Zitan affectionately pinched her soft cheek.
Meanwhile, a black car drove by. The person inside saw their entire interaction.
To make herself feel better, Tao Yitong took the painting from Jiang Zitan’s hand and inspected it carefully. It seemed like just an ordinary painting.
“Sister, I’ll take this back for testing. If it’s fine, I’ll return it.” She wouldn’t be careless with Zitan’s safety; it needed a second check at the Bureau.
