The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 91
“I won’t leave. Never again.”
“Yu Kunian, it has nothing to do with you,” Song Wenzhi said.
She didn’t need Yu Kunian to hide the truth of her lack of feelings just because she pitied her. What happened in the past was merely the result of her own choices.
Yu Kunian said, “If I had known sooner—”
“If you had known sooner, you would only have felt pity for me,” Song Wenzhi interrupted her. “Or perhaps, it would have been a better way to utilize me.”
Yu Kunian fell silent.
The truth was, according to the version of Yu Kunian back in Lihua City, if she had discovered Song Wenzhi’s gland issues, the Alpha would have certainly felt that taking down the Omega would be easier; it would have been a bargaining chip she could use to offer help. Yu Kunian knew her past self well. Even though she didn’t think that way anymore, she still lowered her eyes because of that foolish thought, bowing her head like someone who had done something wrong.
Her premeditated schemes appeared terrible to Song Wenzhi from every angle.
The atmosphere in the bedroom turned stiff. It was a long time before Yu Kunian spoke again: “That’s why I should apologize even more.”
Hearing this, Song Wenzhi reached out her fingertips to touch Yu Kunian’s lowered forehead. The Alpha looked up at her touch, seeing the Omega frowning as she spoke: “Yu Kunian, my gland problem was not your doing.” From beginning to end, the Alpha hadn’t known about her situation, so there was no need to say sorry.
After a pause, the Omega added, “Yu Kunian, I am not a normal Omega. You are merely accommodating me because of that, aren’t you?”
Yu Kunian immediately shook her head. “No, Zhizhi. You aren’t ‘abnormal,’ and I’m not ‘accommodating’ you.” The Alpha slowly caught Song Wenzhi’s fingertips. Seeing that the Omega didn’t pull away, she wrapped her hands around Song Wenzhi’s knuckles and said softly:
“During the time I was at the Fourth Middle School, if I had known you needed me, I wouldn’t have left.”
Yu Kunian looked at Song Wenzhi, her gaze sincere and earnest.
She had been suddenly sent to Yin City by Yu Dai and later suddenly brought back. At that time, Yu Kunian indeed lacked the power to refuse Yu Dai’s arrangements, but she could have at least exercised her right to stay. If she had known… that there was an Omega who could only accept her pheromones, she would have released them generously without hesitation. Now, knowing that Song Wenzhi had endured the pain of shattered hope because of her departure, Yu Kunian felt a natural sense of regret.
“I love you, so my heart aches for you.” Yu Kunian’s breath was warm. She wanted to kiss the Omega’s fingertips, but in the end, she only pressed her lips against the back of her own hand. “Zhizhi, I want to bear all the pain for you. Apologizing because I realized I became the hope you missed—that is an instinct.”
Song Wenzhi met Yu Kunian’s eyes; those eyes held both a smile and tears.
The instinct of love was also the reason for Yu Kunian’s repeated, unconscious approaches back then—it wasn’t just because of pheromones.
The Omega’s fingers curled slightly in Yu Kunian’s palm. Her brow slowly unfurled as she asked, “Yu Kunian, I am not good enough. You know that completely now.”
“Where are you not good?” Yu Kunian chuckled softly. “Zhizhi is wonderful. You have a great personality, high integrity, you’re hardworking, capable, brave, and kind—Song Wenzhi is the best person in the whole world. I don’t think anyone can compare. If you’re talking about the glands, that’s even less of an issue. It’s not worth making you feel like you aren’t good enough. Don’t use other people’s mistakes to negate yourself… Zhizhi, look at your excellence, look at how good you truly are. If you allow it, I can tell you a thousand times over.”
For a trance-like moment, Song Wenzhi thought they were still in Lihua City, a legally married couple. Yu Kunian was praising and encouraging her with a gentle expression. The Alpha’s gaze made it easy to lose oneself, easy to daze.
That daze broke in an instant. Song Wenzhi’s breath hitched as the memory of the past Yu Kunian overlapped, reminding her to distinguish between truth and falsehood. The Omega hadn’t yet emerged from the shadows, nor could she truly return to the past with Yu Kunian just yet, so she withdrew her hand.
Song Wenzhi was afraid because of this—afraid she might never be able to cross this hurdle.
Even though her heart still leaned toward Yu Kunian, the actual heartbreaks she had endured were like stones thrown into a lake; they could create ripples at any moment, pulling her back to reality and forcing her to remain rational. Hearing Yu Kunian’s coaxing words made the Omega feel happy, but she remained equally wary, which was exhausting.
Even Song Wenzhi couldn’t control it herself. She could only place her hopes on time.
But thinking of this, the Omega frowned again. After hesitating, she still asked Yu Kunian: “How long will you wait for me?”
Hearing this nonsensical question, Yu Kunian asked, “Why do you ask that?”
“I said yesterday that I need time to consider… Yu Kunian, how long can you wait before you want to give up?” Song Wenzhi knew there might not be a precise answer to this question, but she asked anyway.
Verbal promises could be exaggerated or even lies. Song Wenzhi couldn’t judge the truth of the Alpha’s answer, but she probably didn’t intend to judge it anyway. She just wanted to hear it. The Omega understood clearly that she wanted to hear the answer in her own heart; even if Yu Kunian lied to her, she would accept it.
People are sometimes foolish, believing in groundless promises. But in certain situations, a promise made face-to-face has a certain magic—it makes one willing to believe, even without any supporting evidence.
Yu Kunian turned serious. She didn’t answer immediately but first gazed into Song Wenzhi’s eyes. After a moment of eye contact, she said: “To be precise, I won’t give up. During the first few days in New York, all I thought about was starting over with you. But these past few days, I suddenly realized that being able to accompany you, with you not rejecting me and allowing me to be by your side, is already a great honor for me. Zhizhi, I respect all your choices. No matter how long it takes, I will always be by your side, waiting for your decision. I won’t leave. Never again.”
“What if it’s always like this? Without status or a name?” Song Wenzhi’s breathing grew heavy as she asked again.
Yu Kunian smiled, her expression soft. “Then I am willing, as long as I can stay by your side.”
Faced with such an answer, Song Wenzhi hid the blurriness in her eyes. Her voice carried an undetectable tremble: “Yu Kunian, I will try.”
Try to overcome it, to smooth over the pain.
“It’s okay, Zhizhi,” Yu Kunian stood up to tidy her messy hair, using her thumb to wipe away a tear from the corner of the Omega’s eye. “Don’t force yourself. I’ll always be here. You can take your time.”
The Alpha would give Song Wenzhi plenty of time. She knew the Omega had scars in her heart. Therefore, Song Wenzhi could take everything slowly; she wouldn’t get impatient and would always have patience.
Because it was Song Wenzhi, anything was fine.
Song Wenzhi grabbed Yu Kunian’s hand, her fair fingers touching the cool wedding ring.
“Yu Kunian,” Song Wenzhi called the Alpha’s name softly. Just that one sentence, nothing else was said.
Yu Kunian smiled at her. The necklace around her neck swayed in the air—silent, yet as if it were stirring up massive waves.
The Alpha wanted time to stop right there, wanted to accompany Song Wenzhi just like this. But Song Wenzhi recovered within two days, while Yu Kunian’s rut had not yet ended. Originally, Yu Kunian wanted to spend the rest of her rut using suppressants so she could accompany Song Wenzhi to the research institute, but the Omega rejected the idea.
Song Wenzhi took away all her suppressants and told her to stay home properly to get through the rut. The Omega could no longer accept Yu Kunian’s pheromones, so for the next few days, they couldn’t see each other.
Yu Kunian was dissatisfied with this. Not being able to see Song Wenzhi for three or four days was sheer torture.
But this was indeed the best way. After all, using excessive suppressants during a rut would affect an Alpha’s glands; Song Wenzhi wouldn’t allow her to use them no matter what. Yu Kunian felt depressed. She stayed at home every day sending messages to the Omega, yet didn’t dare to disturb her too much. Most of the time, she had a long face or would hold Song Wenzhi’s coat to take in the Omega’s scent.
It was only because Yu Kunian was so pitiful without an Omega’s pheromones to soothe her during the rut that Song Wenzhi’s heart softened and she left her coat behind.
Yu Kunian felt comforted by this. She treated it like a treasure, showing it off to Cheng Lu. However, Cheng Lu hadn’t contacted Yu Kunian since the day her pheromones leaked. Perhaps she was afraid Yu Kunian’s “toxic pheromones” would travel through the phone to her side; she didn’t even bother to reply to messages.
Even if she did reply, Cheng Lu would probably only have three words to say: “Have some pride.”
Nowadays, Yu Kunian didn’t care about anything except Song Wenzhi. A few days of not seeing her made her longing grow like vines. On the morning after her rut completely ended, the Alpha rushed to the research institute.
Andrea, who had been fired not long ago, had returned and went straight to Song Wenzhi’s office.
As Song Wenzhi had said, the Eustoma flowers in the vase had been placed on the windowsill because they had withered. After a few days of sunlight, the flowers had begun to dry out and lose their color. A solitary, bright rose was stuck in the vase; the red was prominent, but it felt as if something was missing.
So, Yu Kunian put the newly bought Eustoma in to accompany the rose. She arranged their positions, then took away the dried flowers from the windowsill and tidied up Song Wenzhi’s desk.
When Song Wenzhi came to work, she first noticed that her desk was unexpectedly tidy, which made her daze for a moment. Then, her gaze instinctively drifted to the flower vase. She immediately noticed the newly added flowers and froze in place.
No one but Yu Kunian would touch her flowers.
Just as Song Wenzhi was about to take out her phone to send a message, the Alpha suddenly poked her head in from outside, her eyes curling into a smile: “Zhizhi, I missed you so much.”
The Omega stood there stunned, her vision filled only with Yu Kunian’s silhouette. The Alpha had already walked in, smiling radiantly. “Andrea is back. Is there anything you need me to do?”
Song Wenzhi came to her senses, her expression softening. “You’ve already done it.”
She was referring to the vase.
This time, Andrea’s job title was “Gardener,” and her job description was—protecting the Eustoma.
Actually, Yu Kunian was a bit guilty about being a gardener because she had never raised flowers before. When they were in Lihua City, she couldn’t even keep potted plants alive, especially flowers that even Song Wenzhi couldn’t raise well; she had even less of a chance.
But since she had already made a guarantee to Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian couldn’t go back on her word, even though she didn’t quite believe in herself.
So, Yu Kunian thought of a way: every day before Song Wenzhi arrived at the office, she would replace yesterday’s flowers with new ones. That way, there would always be beautiful Eustoma without any signs of withering.
The Alpha felt that this counted as raising them well.
Lately, Xia Weichi was busy moving between the research institute and the Alliance, so Song Wenzhi had more work on her plate. Yu Kunian thought Song Wenzhi wouldn’t notice.
However, this little trick was discovered by Song Wenzhi in the second week. The Omega stood up to inspect the flowers in the vase and said, “These few look a bit different from yesterday’s.”
“How are they different?” Yu Kunian asked her without a hint of blushing or a racing heart.
Song Wenzhi looked at her, her brow furrowing slightly as she said, “Yu Kunian, you’re cutting corners.”
Without needing Song Wenzhi to press her, Yu Kunian confessed everything. Those “one-day-trip” flowers were currently hidden at her workstation. Some had withered, while others were still clinging to life. The Alpha felt she had done her best.
“Actually, you could have pretended not to know,” Yu Kunian tried to muddle through. “The new ones look so much better.”
Hearing this, Song Wenzhi sat back down. She didn’t agree with that and felt that Yu Kunian, as a gardener, was not serious about her work. So she said again, “Deducting your salary, Yu Kunian.”
Yu Kunian blinked and laughed softly. “Zhizhi, you aren’t paying me a salary.”
She was working for free.
Gardener Yu felt that Song Wenzhi should understand one thing now—”free” is unreliable.
Thinking of this, Yu Kunian couldn’t help but laugh out loud. She walked closer to Song Wenzhi, watching the Omega’s earlobes turn red. Song Wenzhi tried to save face: “Then, a fine.”
The Alpha laughed even harder. She pulled out her card and handed it to Song Wenzhi. “I accept it.”
Compared to being a gardener, Yu Kunian felt she was more adept at being Song Wenzhi’s chef. She truly had no talent for gardening—everything she planted died; she really couldn’t do it.
As for the so-called “chef,” she was actually a door-to-door chef preparing lunch and dinner for Song Wenzhi. Song Wenzhi didn’t know it was her. Yu Kunian had negotiated the times with the Omega in advance so they wouldn’t run into each other, but Song Wenzhi would have hot meals to eat, or have them packed in lunch boxes to take to the research institute.
Yu Kunian hadn’t been doing this new job for very long. Although her skills weren’t as bad as before, the taste could only be described as “okay.” When she was free, she would practice frantically, for fear that the Omega would think her cooking was bad and stop hiring her.
Yu Kunian didn’t intend to let Song Wenzhi know. It was through a series of coincidences that she started cooking for her.
This kind of life was quite ordinary, but Yu Kunian liked it.
Accompanying Song Wenzhi at the research institute, then finding time to cook for her… the Alpha felt very happy. Watching the Omega finish the food she had cooked, and seeing her being happy every day because of the flowers she changed… Yu Kunian loved this kind of life.
Before this, Yu Kunian never thought that such a simple life would become something she woke up feeling joyful about every day. She was free of all constraints and had dropped all her burdens. Now, she was simply the person accompanying Song Wenzhi.
She was the gardener, the chef, and she was Yu Kunian.
Song Wenzhi began to get used to her company and used to having her in her life.
