The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 81
Once Upon a Time, They Shared a Room
Cool water gently splashed against the Omega’s cheeks. Song Wenzhi tried to clear her head, her wet, stray hairs clinging to her forehead as she stared at her reflection in the mirror and took a deep breath.
Song Wenzhi didn’t know what attitude she should use to face Yu Kunian. Her inner conflict had never ceased since the beginning; or rather, she was escaping. She didn’t dare accept new possibilities, and she didn’t dare believe there could be a real change.
After wiping the water droplets from her face, Song Wenzhi walked out of the bathroom into the dim living room. She had originally intended to turn on the light, but seeing Yu Kunian with her eyes closed—not knowing if she was asleep—she decided against it.
Yu Kunian lay quietly on the sofa, her breathing steady. Song Wenzhi stood before her, watching for a long time before crouching down. The Alpha’s sleeping face was as it had always been, save for the slight furrow in her brow. Song Wenzhi wondered if it was because of her. The Omega’s hand rose almost subconsciously, but it stopped barely half an inch from the Alpha’s forehead. Song Wenzhi hesitated, wondering if she had the right to do this.
Even though Xia Weichi told her every time that Yu Kunian was a liar and an Alpha with ill intentions, Song Wenzhi still found it difficult to cast aside her feelings. She couldn’t bring herself to fully blame Yu Kunian; she could only make herself difficult to approach, keeping herself on high alert at all times. She loved this Alpha, and she feared this Alpha.
But in the end, Song Wenzhi used the pad of her finger to smooth out the frown on Yu Kunian’s brow.
Since Yu Kunian was asleep, she could do this secretly, and no one would find out. Only she would remember it. She, too, wanted to be closer to Yu Kunian, but when her reason held the upper hand, it told her she should stay away.
A shadow of gloom flickered in Song Wenzhi’s eyes. Bringing Yu Kunian home today was already an act of impulse; she couldn’t allow herself any further transgressions. A moment later, Song Wenzhi stood back up. She went to get a blanket to cover Yu Kunian, and after ensuring the Alpha wouldn’t catch a cold, she left the living room.
Unsurprisingly, it was difficult to fall asleep that night. Song Wenzhi lay in bed with no trace of drowsiness. Just the thought of Yu Kunian being in the living room, separated only by a door, made it impossible for her heart to find peace. Once upon a time, they had shared a room, but now the world had changed and so had the people. Her racing heartbeat was because of Yu Kunian, and her total lack of sleep was also because of Yu Kunian. Song Wenzhi could not stop herself from remembering the days she spent with her.
She recalled the Alpha leaning in, the Alpha’s embraces, and the Alpha’s kisses.
The burning memory of those kisses seemed to leave physical traces on her lips and skin. Song Wenzhi involuntarily began to miss the scent of peppermint. She had never forgotten the sensation of Yu Kunian’s hand on her cheek, nor the Alpha’s curved eyes full of laughter.
How could she not miss Yu Kunian just as much?
The next day, when Yu Kunian woke up, Song Wenzhi had long since risen. Or rather, Song Wenzhi hadn’t slept more than a few hours; her biological clock forced her eyes open early as usual, and she couldn’t fall back asleep after that.
Yu Kunian was dazed at first, but the moment she realized she was in Song Wenzhi’s home, she snapped wide awake. Sleeping on the sofa last night hadn’t been comfortable, but she couldn’t care less about her stiff neck or aching limbs as she hurriedly scanned Song Wenzhi’s home.
A home that bore the traces of only one person’s life.
Yu Kunian felt a surge of joy at this—there was no scent of any other Alpha here.
Moreover, Song Wenzhi didn’t “not care” about her. At the very least, the Omega was willing to bring her home, which meant she wasn’t completely repulsed. Everything had exceeded Yu Kunian’s expectations. Although she remembered some of yesterday’s events, Song Wenzhi’s expressions and reactions remained a blur; yet, the mere act of being brought back was enough for Yu Kunian to stop worrying about anything else.
Light filtered through the living room curtains. Half of Yu Kunian’s body was bathed in sunlight, and she didn’t know if it was psychological, but the Alpha felt a warmth that made her unable to stop smiling. Getting up from the sofa, Yu Kunian folded the blanket and smoothed her messy hair, wondering if Song Wenzhi was still sleeping.
After walking a few hesitant steps, the Alpha decided to go back and sit down properly, not wanting to overstep her bounds.
She had assumed Song Wenzhi was still resting, only to see the Omega return from outside a moment later, carrying a bag. As Song Wenzhi stepped through the entryway, their eyes met.
Both were startled, then Yu Kunian was the first to stand up and approach Song Wenzhi. “Morning, Zhizhi. I’m sorry for the trouble last night, and thank you for putting me up for the night.”
Song Wenzhi placed the items she had bought on the dining table nearby. She averted her gaze before saying, “I bought sandwiches. You can eat after you’ve freshened up.”
The Omega had also bought disposable toiletries and left them on the table. She took her own portion of breakfast and prepared to head back to the bedroom. Before closing the door, Song Wenzhi added, “Go home on your own after you’ve eaten.”
She had originally wanted to ask if the Alpha’s head still ached, but the words never made it out. Song Wenzhi didn’t even know why she was avoiding Yu Kunian; perhaps because of yesterday’s impulse, she felt she had to stay away from Yu Kunian to clear her head.
Yu Kunian didn’t notice any of this; she was already very satisfied.
The fact that Song Wenzhi even remembered to bring her breakfast kept the Alpha’s smile from fading.
Since coming to New York, Yu Kunian hadn’t been fond of sandwiches, but the one Song Wenzhi bought today tasted wonderful. Fearing it would disappear in the blink of an eye if she ate too fast, the Alpha practically savored every bite on purpose.
All physical discomfort was cast to the back of her mind, and her previous sadness vanished. Yu Kunian’s mood was buoyed by the fact that her relationship with Song Wenzhi had grown a bit closer. She was even a little excited; though the “pity play” was a bit cliché, it had at least worked.
What Yu Kunian wanted was Song Wenzhi’s softheartedness and her concern. As long as she wasn’t irrelevant to the Omega, it was enough, and she could continue to move closer. As long as there was hope, she wouldn’t give up no matter how long it took. She was willing to wait for Song Wenzhi to accept her again, even if it took a very long time.
After finishing breakfast, Yu Kunian reluctantly put on her coat. She knocked lightly on Song Wenzhi’s bedroom door and said, “Zhizhi, I’m leaving. Thank you for taking care of me.”
Song Wenzhi didn’t answer her, but Yu Kunian didn’t perceive the Omega’s deliberate coldness. She was still immersed in the joy from moments ago. Once out the door, her headache was gone, her shoulders no longer ached, and her entire being seemed swept up in uncontrollable excitement.
She first went to the temporary parking garage from yesterday, then drove straight to the building where Cheng Lu’s company was located.
Cheng Lu’s office door was suddenly pushed open. Still on the phone, she jumped and whipped her head around, only to see Yu Kunian’s long-absent, radiant smile. She raised an eyebrow, understanding immediately, but decided to finish her call anyway.
A Beta secretary brought tea and snacks. Yu Kunian sat to the side, feeling impatient with Cheng Lu’s call; she was desperate to share her joy with someone. Currently, contacting Jiang Qiu in Lihua City was inconvenient, not just because of the New York time difference, but because Jiang Qiu’s replies had been very slow lately. Even phone calls only went through occasionally; she seemed to be busy out of her mind.
Although Yu Kunian had told Jiang Qiu to keep a constant eye on Zhaoming Biotech, she hadn’t expected Jiang Qiu to be this busy, to the point where even basic communication was a struggle.
When Cheng Lu finally hung up, Yu Kunian was about to speak when Cheng Lu raised a hand to stop her, saying smugly, “It seems my idea was quite effective. Though there was a slight deviation, anyone can see you’re beaming today. Something great must have happened.”
Yu Kunian said, “I do need to thank you for the suggestion.”
Cheng Lu laughed and teased politely, “You’re too kind, President Yu. So, how is your progress?”
“Very good. The breakfast she bought was delicious.”
“You’re this happy just because you ate a sandwich she bought?”
“Isn’t that worth being happy about?”
Cheng Lu glanced at her, almost unable to maintain her expression. “…Yu Kunian, you are so pathetic.” She had an air of “hating that the iron wouldn’t turn into steel.” “I thought that after last night, through a drunken, soulful confession, you and Song Wenzhi would have reconciled. Instead, you just… slept? You didn’t say anything?”
Yu Kunian pondered for a moment and then argued, “I was drunk. My consciousness was blurred; how could I remember any soulful confession?”
Her head had throbbed terribly yesterday; she had only thought about sleeping and hadn’t remembered anything else. She vaguely recalled saying she missed Song Wenzhi, but Song Wenzhi hadn’t responded with anything.
Cheng Lu pinched the bridge of her nose; she couldn’t laugh anymore. “I’m starting to wonder if you’re really the Yu Kunian I remember. President Yu, the famous President Yu, did you leave your brain back in Lihua City? You used such a good opportunity… to sleep. You can’t even handle one Omega; you’re really embarrassing Alphas everywhere.”
Yu Kunian frowned and defended herself, “I have to take it slow. I can’t be too aggressive.”
“Then you’re too slow.” Cheng Lu was truly worried. “To this day, there hasn’t even been any substantive progress. Since you discovered last night that she still cares about you, you should have struck while the iron was hot. Maybe you really would have reconciled.”
“No, I can’t push her too hard.” Yu Kunian couldn’t agree with her and still wanted to be steady.
She didn’t want to make any decisions while being impulsive—neither for herself nor for Song Wenzhi. The Alpha wanted to take it slow until Song Wenzhi was certain they could start over. Yu Kunian had patience, and she wanted to give Song Wenzhi enough time to consider. She didn’t want to hurt Song Wenzhi ever again.
Cheng Lu expressed her helplessness. “I’m the one getting anxious for you. You worry too much; I can’t understand it.”
It was just an Omega. If you can chase her down, then do it; if not, then leave. Was she really worth all this time and effort?
“I have to worry about many things.” Originally, she wasn’t trusted by Song Wenzhi. If she was too hasty, she felt it would only push Song Wenzhi further away.
Cheng Lu teased playfully, “I’m just afraid that while you’re ‘taking it slow,’ someone else will snatch her away mid-journey.”
After all, that Xia Weichi was Song Wenzhi’s closest friend right now. If Song Wenzhi were to truly make a choice, Xia Weichi’s likelihood was certainly higher. Although Cheng Lu hadn’t met her, she knew of Xia Weichi. Before Song Wenzhi arrived, that Alpha had plenty of Omegas surrounding her.
Alphas were indeed very popular here, let alone a somewhat famous Alpha like Xia Weichi. Furthermore, over all these years, Xia Weichi hadn’t dated a single Omega. According to various versions of rumors, she was in love with an Omega she had known since childhood and was willing to wait for over a decade without regret—very devoted.
The Omega in those rumors was likely Song Wenzhi.
Cheng Lu glanced at Yu Kunian, feeling that Yu Kunian really couldn’t compare in certain aspects. If she didn’t hurry, the person really would be stolen away.
“Impossible.” Recalling the traces of a solitary life in Song Wenzhi’s home, Yu Kunian said with certainty.
Cheng Lu waved her hand at her. “I’ll tell you the truth. Among the news I gathered earlier, there was mention of Xia Weichi and Song Wenzhi discussing marriage. The people in the research institute have likely long assumed they are a couple.”
Upon hearing this, Yu Kunian’s smile vanished. She looked at Cheng Lu. “They’ve known each other for so many years without anything happening. Why would their minds change just because of these past few months?”
Despite saying this, Yu Kunian had indeed long regarded Xia Weichi as the only crisis between her and Song Wenzhi.
