The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 75
President Yu, It Is Better for Us to Settle Our Accounts Clearly
After delivering Song Wenzhi to her destination, Yu Kunian did not leave. She found a suitable parking spot and continued to wait for her.
The sky remained overcast, and the rain seemed to be getting heavier. Yu Kunian originally intended to wait outside, but a layer of water had already accumulated on the ground, and the cold wind was blowing fiercely. Even standing still, she would have been drenched by the wind-swept rain.
However, the Alpha did not know how long Song Wenzhi would stay in that office building. Her gaze frequently shifted toward the entrance, terrified of missing Song Wenzhi’s appearance. The hands of her watch turned round after round, yet Yu Kunian remained patient. In the past, she might have driven away impatiently long ago, but now, her time was meant for waiting for Song Wenzhi.
Where Song Wenzhi was concerned, any length of time was acceptable.
Yu Kunian cherished every single second she spent with Song Wenzhi. They were no longer legally married, so for the Alpha, every moment spent together was exceptionally precious.
Previously, the time of President Yu of Zhaoming Biotech was expensive; meetings required appointments made well in advance. Yu Kunian had never wasted time waiting for anyone. But now, she was willing—even pleading—to exchange hours of her time for even ten minutes with Song Wenzhi.
Nothing was more important than Song Wenzhi.
And so, Yu Kunian waited until noon. When Song Wenzhi finally emerged, she accidentally stepped into a puddle by the entrance, soaking a large portion of her shoe. The Omega frowned, looking down at her foot for a moment before looking up at the rain, which was still falling heavily.
Yu Kunian drove the car back in front of her, rolled down the window slightly, and said to Song Wenzhi, “Wenzhi, let me take you back.”
Song Wenzhi didn’t move. Her brow furrowed deeper, seemingly surprised that Yu Kunian had waited for her for so long.
The Omega looked at the cars passing by on the street. It was obvious that getting a taxi now was even harder than it had been in the morning. Even if she wasn’t in a hurry, the wind and rain were so strong that the time spent waiting for a ride would surely leave her completely soaked.
Thinking of this, Song Wenzhi glanced back at the restaurant behind her, considering the feasibility of going inside to take shelter.
As if guessing her thoughts, Yu Kunian also looked toward the restaurant and added, “Wenzhi, the rain is going to last for a long time.”
Hearing this, Song Wenzhi looked at the Alpha. The car window was blurred by the pelting rain, and the Omega could just barely make out Yu Kunian’s expression. The other woman’s persistence was simply incomprehensible to her.
Song Wenzhi spoke: “Does President Yu want to be a driver that badly?”
“If it’s for you, I would be honored and very willing.” Instead of denying it, Yu Kunian let a faint smile touch her face, as if this were truly a high distinction.
Song Wenzhi still could not guess what Yu Kunian was trying to do. Her gaze remained cold. Although she didn’t sense any malice from the Alpha, she intended to stay far away from her to avoid being deceived again.
“It’s not necessary,” Song Wenzhi told her. “President Yu, you should go back.”
To Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian was a time bomb of unknown duration. She felt an inevitable sense of dread because of this; every interaction with Yu Kunian forced the Omega to rack her brains wondering if she still had some remaining value to be exploited. Since she had decided to come to New York, her goal was to leave Yu Kunian behind. Therefore, in the face of Yu Kunian’s behavior, her only instinct was to refuse.
Having said that, Song Wenzhi turned and walked into the restaurant behind her, intending to shelter from the rain and have lunch at the same time.
Yu Kunian’s expression faltered, a flicker of panic crossing her eyes—especially when she saw Song Wenzhi’s retreating back. The Alpha quickly reparked the car, then grabbed an umbrella and hurried inside the shop.
Ignoring her wet sleeves, Yu Kunian spotted Song Wenzhi and walked over slowly. She saw the Omega looking down at her wet shoe. The Omega clearly hadn’t expected Yu Kunian to follow her inside; when she looked up, Yu Kunian was standing right in front of her, not even daring to sit down.
Song Wenzhi knitted her brows, her voice very cold: “President Yu, stop following me.”
Yu Kunian hesitated. She stared into Song Wenzhi’s eyes, seeing the distance and resistance within. She wanted to explain something, but in the end, no words came out. Perhaps in Song Wenzhi’s eyes, she was an Alpha who possessed no credibility whatsoever. Yu Kunian could defend herself, but her defenses would be useless.
After all, the fact that she had deceived Song Wenzhi was a reality. Having shamelessly followed her to New York, she hadn’t expected Song Wenzhi to treat her kindly.
Yu Kunian accepted Song Wenzhi’s cold stares and her rejection. Whether she was pushed away or refused, she wouldn’t leave. She wanted to atone, to make amends, and also… to start over.
“Wenzhi, wait for me a moment,” Yu Kunian pursed her lips and said after a pause.
Without waiting for Song Wenzhi’s response, Yu Kunian turned and hurried back out with her umbrella. The Omega didn’t know what she was up to, but the Alpha’s figure moved in a great rush. Song Wenzhi placed her order and sat in her chair, trying to ignore the chill coming from her soaked socks. Looking at the unrelenting rain outside, she couldn’t help but feel a bit gloomy.
Before the food arrived, Yu Kunian’s figure reappeared.
Song Wenzhi glimpsed her unintentionally. Yu Kunian was walking fast, and the umbrella was being blown to one side by the wind. No matter how tightly Yu Kunian gripped it, it was impossible not to get hit by the rain. By the time she entered the shop, strands of the Alpha’s hair were dripping with water, the sleeves of her coat were entirely soaked, and her light-colored jeans were covered in rain spots.
Yu Kunian was cradling a large gift bag in her arms. She had tried her best to protect it, even adding an extra layer of covering to keep it from getting wet. She set down the umbrella, walked over to Song Wenzhi, and knelt down in front of her.
While Song Wenzhi was still in a daze, Yu Kunian pulled a pair of new shoes out of the bag. She lowered her head and instinctively reached out to help Song Wenzhi change them, but she quickly realized something and looked up at Song Wenzhi:
“If it’s inconvenient for me to do it, Wenzhi, you can do it yourself.”
Song Wenzhi was stunned. She looked into those amber eyes; there was nothing else in the Alpha’s gaze except for concern—a familiar concern—but the Omega could not judge whether it was genuine.
Seeing that Song Wenzhi hadn’t moved for a long time, Yu Kunian looked back at the shoes and whispered, “Do you not like them? I can go and—”
“What are you doing?” Song Wenzhi interrupted her. The question came out a bit late.
Yu Kunian paused. She didn’t look up again and said in a muffled voice: “The rain won’t stop for a while. I saw your shoes were wet and thought it would be uncomfortable, so I wanted to buy a new pair for you to change into. It will feel better.”
Song Wenzhi stared intently at Yu Kunian. For a moment, her vision blurred. Hearing Yu Kunian’s words, her gaze fell upon the Alpha’s dripping hair and drenched coat, and she suddenly felt a spark of soft-heartedness.
The Omega’s breath hitched, and she quickly looked away, refusing: “No need.”
“Wenzhi, you’ll catch a cold like this.” Yu Kunian’s fingertips twitched slightly. She looked up again, and an undeniable sadness filled her eyes as she gazed at Song Wenzhi. “Who knows when the rain will stop? What if you get sick?”
Song Wenzhi said, “It has nothing to do with you.”
The Omega thought: What is Yu Kunian doing? Showing concern? Appearing out of nowhere and then caring for her for no reason—what is the purpose, what is the motive?
Yu Kunian didn’t speak again. In the silent atmosphere, the Alpha’s gaze became very heavy. Even though she had prepared herself, it still hurt every time she heard Song Wenzhi say such things.
But after a moment of deliberation, Yu Kunian still reached out. She grasped Song Wenzhi’s ankle and, ignoring the Omega’s attempts to stop her, removed the half-soaked socks and shoes and replaced them with the new ones.
Song Wenzhi’s attempts to push her away were fruitless, and since it was a public place, she couldn’t very well start shouting. She tried to pull her foot away, but Yu Kunian applied pressure, leaving her helpless for a while. With her ears turning bright red, Song Wenzhi failed to stop her. The chill on her feet slowly dissipated. The new shoes were very beautiful, but the Omega couldn’t say exactly what made them so.
“Wenzhi, you can hate me, but please don’t neglect your own body just because of your distaste for me, okay? Being sick is very difficult, I…” Yu Kunian spoke again. She released her hold, and then her voice faltered. She no longer had the right to take care of Song Wenzhi, yet she didn’t trust Xia Weichi either. She didn’t want Song Wenzhi to get sick; she wanted the Omega to be healthy every day. Therefore, Yu Kunian would rather Song Wenzhi hate her more than stand by and do nothing. The Alpha’s breath trembled as she added, “I’m begging you.”
Even if she was making a mountain out of a molehill, she didn’t want there to be even a slight possibility of Song Wenzhi getting sick.
Song Wenzhi’s heart skipped a beat. She lowered her head again and met Yu Kunian’s gaze.
In that instant, time seemed to stand still. The Alpha from her memories had not only knelt down to change her shoes but had also lowered her posture, pleading for her permission to help. Song Wenzhi’s lips trembled, and her heartbeat pounded loudly and heavily in her ears. The Omega’s current emotions were truly indescribable.
Song Wenzhi could barely find her voice. She opened her mouth, but no sound came out. Because she could never fathom Yu Kunian’s motives, Song Wenzhi grew more fearful. She had developed a conditioned reflex toward Yu Kunian’s kindness, terrified that the Alpha was planning something again.
As Yu Kunian prepared to put the old shoes back into the shoebox, she heard Song Wenzhi ask her: “President Yu, how much did they cost?”
The motion of putting the shoes away stopped. Yu Kunian froze like that for a moment. Because of Song Wenzhi’s words, the Alpha felt her breathing grow erratic. She asked in return, “Wenzhi, must we settle things so clearly?”
Song Wenzhi said, “President Yu, it is better for us to settle our accounts clearly.”
Yu Kunian slowly put the shoebox back into the gift bag. Her eyes turned red. “Wenzhi, why?”
“President Yu, I shouldn’t have any interests left for you to plot against,” Song Wenzhi said after a moment of hesitation. “Counting things clearly makes me feel more at ease.”
Hearing this, Yu Kunian’s movements as she tried to stand up became staggered. She struggled to stabilize herself before looking at the Omega in front of her. Hot tears escaped her eyes. Yu Kunian tightened her lips, her fingers trembling incessantly as she choked out, “I…”
Yu Kunian didn’t know what to say. How could she explain? This was the reality. She had to pay the price for every word she had spoken, and she had to accept that it was her own mistakes that led the Omega to draw such a heartless line between them.
Yu Kunian’s regret had never ceased, but it was only when Song Wenzhi actually said it that she realized just how excessive she had been and what a shadow her deception had cast over the Omega.
“I’m sorry, Wenzhi,” Yu Kunian said, reaching up to wipe away her tears, her voice raspy.
Her apology received no response from the Omega. Song Wenzhi stopped looking at her, took a deep breath, and said, “Just tell me how much.”
Song Wenzhi didn’t need Yu Kunian’s apology, nor had she ever expected Yu Kunian to apologize to her. They were divorced anyway, so nothing else mattered as long as Yu Kunian stopped deliberately planning things against her like before.
Yu Kunian took a half-step back. She knew how firm Song Wenzhi was being, yet she still held onto a shred of hope—hope that the Omega might give her a chance, that she wouldn’t shut her out completely.
“Wenzhi, I don’t want money,” the Alpha whispered. “Can we make an exchange instead?”
Song Wenzhi asked, “Exchange for what?” The piece of paper with the number on it was still in her pocket, devoid of warmth.
Yu Kunian looked steadily at Song Wenzhi and said softly, “In exchange, let me be your driver. Your private driver.”
