The Protagonist 'Gong' Became my Wife - Chapter 13
Chapter 13: We Are Very Much in Love
By the time Jiang Yanning arrived at the racing club, it was just after 1:00 PM. He immediately checked the messages sent by Assistant Zhou; knowing that Gu Zhuo had gone to the mall to shop, he felt at ease and transferred a sum of money to Gu Zhuo’s phone.
Seeing him staring incessantly at his phone, He Wenyun patted his shoulder from behind. “Let’s go, Yanning. Change your clothes. We haven’t had a proper race since returning to the country!”
Jiang Yanning turned and headed toward his private locker room, waving a hand behind him. “Got it. Just don’t go begging for mercy when the time comes.”
Perhaps it was because his sleep quality had improved lately, leading to an exceptionally clear mind, but between the two men who were originally of similar skill, Jiang Yanning emerged as the superior after a single match.
The car performed a fishtail drift and stopped steadily at the finish line. Jiang Yanning stepped out, removed his helmet, and smoothed back his sweat-dampened hair. With the corners of his brows tilted up and a hearty smile on his face, he made a gesture toward the car behind him.
He Wenyun stepped down a moment later, shaking his head helplessly. “I didn’t expect you to improve in secret without telling me, Yanning! No, no, this round doesn’t count!”
Jiang Yanning shrugged. “I didn’t practice in secret; I’m busy with work. A loss is a loss, no playing foul! Now, give me the car you promised.”
He Wenyun was a designer by profession, but he loved racing as a hobby. He owned quite a few cars that he treated like treasures; others weren’t even allowed to touch them. Jiang Yanning had been eyeing one for a long time and specifically used it as the stakes for the bet. In truth, he was also surprised he won, but winning the car was all that mattered.
Looking at the fair, strong palm extended toward him, He Wenyun took the car keys from his pocket and slowly placed them in Jiang Yanning’s hand. Just before their fingertips touched, a sarcastic, mocking voice drifted from behind.
“Oh, let me see who’s here. It turns out President Jiang has graced us with his presence!”
Jiang Yanning gripped the car keys and unceremoniously stuffed them into his pocket before turning around. “Miss Li, just because I didn’t agree to the cooperation this morning doesn’t mean you need to be so resentful.”
Li Xianyue brushed her curls behind her back and snorted, clutching her helmet. “Who said I was talking about business? One thing is one thing. I’m clearly taking issue with the fact that you came to my turf without even saying hello!”
The hidden boss behind this racing club was the eldest daughter of the Li family, Li Xianyue. She was also Li Mengze’s elder sister. She had a penchant for racing and motorcycles, which was how she had befriended a young Jiang Yanning.
Jiang Yanning smiled, took a step to the side, and introduced He Wenyun to her. “This is my good friend from abroad, He Wenyun. I came here with him this time. Wenyun, this is Li Xianyue, my friend and business partner here.”
After He Wenyun and Li Xianyue exchanged brief pleasantries, the conversation stalled. Jiang Yanning proactively asked, “By the way, Xianyue, who is this behind you?”
He had noticed the man behind Li Xianyue long ago. Tall and slender, wearing a form-fitting pure black racing suit that outlined a youthful yet powerful physique. He held a helmet in his arms, wore a black mask on his face, and had a pair of sunglasses over his eyes—looking quite mysterious.
As if noticing Jiang Yanning’s overly long gaze, the man introduced himself. His voice was low and hoarse, very magnetic. “I’m Ding You. I had a brief encounter with Miss Li and happened to run into her on the way here, so we came together.”
Li Xianyue nodded. “Right. Speaking of which, Ding You helped me out with a small favor before. I even said I’d let him experience the track for free today. Come on, Ding You, I’ll take you to pick a car.”
Jiang Yanning lowered his eyes, acknowledging the information. His eyes uncontrollably darted back to Ding You; he felt a very familiar sensation from him but couldn’t quite recall where he had seen this person.
He Wenyun, who originally didn’t take Ding You seriously, felt alarm bells ring in his head after noticing Jiang Yanning’s gaze. It was bad enough that an eighteen-year-old brat had snatched an opening, but was he going to let a stranger outshine him too?
He grabbed Jiang Yanning’s wrist. Even though he was pushed away unobtrusively a second later, he didn’t get angry, only reminded him: “Yanning, the more I think about that last round, the more unwilling I am to accept it. Let’s go again. I must win a round against you today.”
Jiang Yanning’s attention was instantly diverted. He waved to Li Xianyue, preparing for another match.
Before the car door could close, a hand wearing a pure black glove pressed down on his steering wheel. The mysterious Ding You leaned over, coming very close. If it weren’t for the helmet acting as a barrier, he might have kissed Jiang Yanning’s face directly.
“Mr. Jiang, interested in being my personal coach? Money is no object.”
Jiang Yanning’s face turned cold. He warned in a heavy voice, “For the sake of being Xianyue’s friend, I won’t do anything to you this time. But if you dare to offend me again, I’ll break your legs!”
Ding You wasn’t frightened at all. Instead, he provocatively brushed a hand against Jiang Yanning’s wrist before leaving, his tone extremely annoying. “An angry Mr. Jiang… I like that even more.”
With that, he closed the car door proactively before Jiang Yanning could react. Before departing, he even blew a kiss, which disgusted Jiang Yanning immensely. In the subsequent race, Jiang Yanning showed no mercy; the screeching of tires against the pavement was deafening.
Ding You stood on the stands with his arms crossed, a pleasant smile still playing on his lips. 77 couldn’t understand.
【Host, we went through all the trouble of disguising ourselves to come here just to avoid being exposed, right? Why are you approaching Jiang Yanning? If he discovers your identity, won’t our work be for nothing?】
Ding You or rather, Gu Zhuo wasn’t panicked at all.Don’t you think he’ll be extremely disgusted with this ‘persona’ of mine from now on? He probably won’t even want to speak to me.
So you did it on purpose! Just to keep Jiang Yanning from suspecting your identity!
Gu Zhuo remained noncommittal, staring at the red car speeding across the track. He felt that Jiang Yanning was nursing a silent anger and could only vent it through racing. He’s actually quite cute.To think he acted this way in front of others…
77 was confused.What’s cute? Who’s cute?
Nothing. Let’s go find Li Xianyue.
When they reached the car selection area, Li Xianyue had already picked one out and handed over the keys. “These are the cars I keep at the club. I’ll lend one to you for the day. If you like it, I’ll give you a discount next time.”
Gu Zhuo chuckled. “Understood, Miss Li.” Based on the favor of helping her at the banquet that day, getting this much was already good. Li Xianyue was truly a good person. Little did he know, Li Xianyue was just a fan of handsome faces and simply wanted to give a good-looking guy a bit of a discount.
Thinking that since Ding You wanted to come to the club, he must know how to drive, Li Xianyue gave a few instructions and went straight to her office to handle work. However, she didn’t know that the moment Gu Zhuo sat in the car, he opened his mouth to ask:
77, I need a tutorial.He didn’t know how to drive such a low-tech vehicle.
77 was prepared, pulling up a light screen that only the two of them could see, teaching Gu Zhuo how to drive step-by-step. To an outsider, it looked like this fierce, cool-looking race car was surging forward and then stopping abruptly. Reversing, then stopping abruptly. It looked like a coin-operated kiddie ride.
After half an hour of fumbling, Gu Zhuo had mostly figured it out. He waved his hand to close the screen and floored the accelerator. Inside the car, 77, who hadn’t found a secure spot yet, was suddenly flipped over by a massive force, slammed into the backrest, and collapsed dizzily.
【H—Host, could you give a heads-up next time?】
Gu Zhuo couldn’t hear it. He was fully immersed in the sport of “flying cars.” With the support of his mental power, he could precisely control the steering wheel and choose the most suitable angles. He could calculate the maximum speed he could maintain before the next turn, passing through with thrills but no danger. His Alpha senses were at their peak, helping him complete one perfect maneuver after another.
After one lap, Gu Zhuo wanted more. He sat in the car for a long time savoring the experience, his eyes bright, as if he had found an interesting toy. The car window was tapped at that moment. Gu Zhuo turned out to be He Wenyun.
“Ding You, you’re incredible! Are you some kind of world champion or something? Is that why you wear a mask to keep people from knowing your true identity?”
Gu Zhuo glanced at him flatly. “No.”
But He Wenyun didn’t care about his coldness. “Ding You, your performance just now was quite good. Interested in becoming friends and playing together in the future?”
Gu Zhuo was about to decline when he noticed Jiang Yanning walking over out of the corner of his eye. He instinctively touched the helmet on his face. Then, he let out a whistle: “Is Mr. Jiang also here to invite me? Do you want to hire me as your personal coach? That would be for the best.”
Jiang Yanning was merely passing by but was forced to hear it. His expression darkened even more. “Ding You, if you don’t want your hands broken, you better shut your mouth!”
He Wenyun, who had been enthusiastically inviting him just a moment ago, turned cold. “Ding You, show my friend some respect!”
Gu Zhuo tilted his head. “He’s just your friend, not your boyfriend. Why are you stopping me from pursuing him?”
Wenyun’s mouth twisted in anger. “Of course, it’s because I…” The words died in his throat. “Because he doesn’t like you!”
Gu Zhuo nodded affirmatively. “Then that’s perfect. Once I win him over, won’t he like me then?”
He Wenyun wanted to argue but realized that from the standpoint of a “friend,” he couldn’t stop someone from pursuing Jiang Yanning. The problem was, he didn’t dare confess.
Jiang Yanning listened for a long time before finally pulling He Wenyun away, staring at Gu Zhuo while emphasizing each word: “I have a boyfriend. We are very much in love. Please do not say those things in front of me; it pollutes my ears!”
Gu Zhuo accepted this seemingly nonchalantly. As he adjusted the car’s position, his head popped out again, and he beckoned to He Wenyun. “Mr. He, let’s have a match.”
He Wenyun frowned, his tone impatient. “What do you mean?”
“Let’s race on the most difficult track; I haven’t tried it yet. If I win, you agree to one condition. If I lose, I promise you I won’t harass Jiang Yanning. How about it?”
Jiang Yanning gestured for He Wenyun to leave. “Ignore him. He’s a moron.”
Gu Zhuo raised his voice, continuing to entice him. “My condition won’t involve killing or arson; I guarantee it won’t make things difficult for you.”
He Wenyun took two steps away, then suddenly stopped. “Fine. I’ll race you!”
Under the helmet, Gu Zhuo couldn’t help but reveal a successful smile.
