- Chapter 9 - Sneaking to the Alpha Dorm at Midnight
Jiang Wenyan scanned the surroundings, seemingly unfazed by the reactions of the crowd. He patted Su Xi’s hand reassuringly. “It might be because the fragrance on you is too strong.”
Fragrance? Su Xi raised his arm and sniffed. He could only smell a faint scent of body wash. He didn’t smell anything else.
“If it’s that strong, why can’t I smell it?” he asked, tilting his head in confusion.
“Let’s go inside first.” After registering at the entrance, Jiang Wenyan led Su Xi into the depths of the Training Base. They walked through a long corridor to Training Room 62 on the third floor. The silver doors slid open automatically after identity verification.
Once inside, Jiang Wenyan sat Su Xi down on a spacious sofa. He was incredibly attentive, pouring tea, peeling candies, and opening snacks. Su Xi, however, just leaned against a soft pillow looking exhausted, sipping on an iced sea-salt lychee soda.
“A-Xi, who were you with yesterday?” Jiang Wenyan asked tentatively.
Su Xi understood the underlying meaning but answered nonchalantly: “Duan Cheng.”
“Counting the time, his class should be over soon. I’ll go find him directly in a bit.” He glanced at the digital clock on the wall, tossed the empty bottle accurately into the trash, and stood up to wipe his hands with a tissue.
“Did you only see Duan Cheng yesterday?” Jiang Wenyan felt the scent on Su Xi was familiar, it smelled like Fu Heng’s pheromones, but it was mixed with a much more mysterious, unfamiliar breath he had never smelled on Su Xi before.
Su Xi walked over and patted Jiang Wenyan’s shoulder with concern. “Why have you been acting so strange lately? Did something happen?”
“No…” Jiang Wenyan’s words died in his throat. He lowered his eyes to hide his emotions.
“I know I was a bit harsh last time, but you were being so annoying with all the questions…” Su Xi stood on his tiptoes and ruffled the man’s hair. It felt soft. “Are you mad?”
“No, I could never be mad at you.” Jiang Wenyan shook his head, gently catching the hand that was messing up his hair.
Su Xi thought Jiang Wenyan really resembled a large canine—fierce to others but incredibly obedient in front of him. He withdrew his hand and prepared to leave.
Suddenly, Jiang Wenyan grabbed Su Xi’s wrist. Su Xi stumbled back a few steps, his back hitting the man’s firm chest. He frowned, trying to pull away, but the strength difference was too great.
Warm breath fanned against his sensitive ear. Before he could protest, he felt the blocking patch on his neck being ripped away. The slightly swollen skin was exposed to the air, releasing an uncontrollable, rich fragrance.
“A-Xi, who marked you?” Jiang Wenyan’s voice turned chillingly cold.
“Huh?” Su Xi blinked, thinking he had misheard. He covered his neck and stammered, “That’s impossible. I wouldn’t let just anyone mark me.”
Even as he said it, panic surged. Fu Heng hadn’t succeeded yesterday. The only person he had been close to since then was Duan Cheng. But he’s a Beta! How could he mark me?
Distraught, Su Xi managed to pull away. Even the joy of the system reporting a rise in Salvation Value vanished.
Su Xi rushed to the classroom to find Duan Cheng, only to be told the class had ended early. If Duan Cheng is back at the dorm and doesn’t see me, I’m dead…
Sure enough, his communicator pinged. It was a message from Duan Cheng asking where he had gone so early and why he wasn’t waiting at the dorm.
Su Xi hesitated before lying, saying he was hungry and went out for food.
He took the long way back. By the time he reached the dorm, the sky was pitch black. He crept up the stairs, pulling his hat low. As he reached a corner, he saw a tall figure dressed in black leaning against the wall. Thinking it was a stalker, Su Xi turned and sprinted back down.
He stopped under a tree, gasping for air, his face pale with sweat. “System, did he follow me?”
(Host, what are you afraid of? That’s Li Huai) System 1368, which had been muted, cried out in frustration.
“Oh! He’s crazy, standing there in the dark scaring people!” Su Xi muttered.
“Why are you running so fast?” Li Huai’s voice rang out behind him, laced with amusement and helplessness.
“I didn’t know it was you! I thought it was some psycho!” Su Xi grumbled righteously.
Li Huai smiled and reached out a hand. “Get up. You’ll get dizzy crouching there.”
Su Xi took his hand and was pulled up. He swayed, looking like a breeze could knock him over.
“What are you doing at the Alpha dorms at midnight?” Li Huai asked.
“Looking for someone,” Su Xi answered shortly.
“Who?” Li Huai’s amber eyes flickered with a hint of violence. He looked at Su Xi’s neck. In the light of the streetlamp, the red mark was fully visible. The faint orchid scent was mixed with something else.
“You’ve been marked?” Li Huai hissed through gritted teeth.
Why is everyone reacting so strongly to this? Su Xi thought. He backed away. “It’s just a temporary mark. It’ll be gone soon.”
The air grew stagnant. Li Huai’s tall shadow loomed over him, smelling of cold cedar. Su Xi tried to push him away, but couldn’t move him an inch. Instead, he was pulled into a tight hug.
Li Huai began to nuzzle against his neck gland suggestively.
“Li Huai! What are you doing?” Su Xi panicked.
“What’s wrong with a hug? We used to do this all the time,” Li Huai said, feigning innocence while tightening his grip.
“Then just hug! Don’t rub my gland!” Su Xi bit his lip. His neck was still sore from Duan Cheng’s “rough” treatment yesterday. Suddenly, he felt a burning gaze from the darkness, it felt like a venomous snake watching him from a damp jungle.
(HOLY CRAP! AH! Host! The Villain is here!) 1368 screamed in his head.
Su Xi’s heart skipped a beat. He tried to push Li Huai away, but the Alpha’s grip was like iron. “Li Huai, let go! My waist hurts!”
“Your waist hurts?” Li Huai loosened his grip, about to check for injuries, when a cold voice cut through the air.
“Out for food? Returning later?” Duan Cheng stood there, his eyes icy. He looked at Su Xi’s pale face and red-rimmed eyes, then at Li Huai. “You left something at my place. I messaged you, but you didn’t reply.”
“You didn’t have to come deliver it…” Su Xi trailed off.
Li Huai stepped forward, putting an arm around Su Xi’s shoulder. “Hello, I’m Li Huai. A-Xi’s childhood friend.”
Duan Cheng ignored him completely. He pulled the pink-white lychee brooch from his pocket.
Su Xi didn’t dare take it. He scrambled away from Li Huai and grabbed Duan Cheng’s sleeve, acting spoiled. “I’m tired. Let’s go back.”
He shot a look at Li Huai to shut up, but in Duan Cheng’s eyes, this looked like the two of them were exchanging secret glances. Worse, Su Xi was covered in another man’s “disgusting” pheromones.
Su Xi followed Duan Cheng back, not daring to breathe. The arrogant young master was now as obedient as a lamb.
The moment they entered the dorm; Duan Cheng grabbed Su Xi’s wrist and dragged him into the bathroom. Before Su Xi could steady himself, a blast of ice-cold water drenched him.
“Ugh…” He gasped at the cold, instinctively trying to hide from the showerhead, his back pressed against the wet, cold tiles. He couldn’t even open his eyes as his lashes shook violently.
