- Chapter 50 - Fuguang Institute (20) — "If You Wanted This, Why Didn't You Ask Me...?"
Standing outside, Xiao Yangyao knew immediately that Mephisto had not kept his promise to give Su Xi the medicine. Instead, the merman had taken advantage of the situation to force him into such acts within the pool!
His gaze swept across the room, finally landing on a heavy rod in the corner.
CRACK—!
With a surge of unimaginable force, the glass tank was smashed open. Shards flew everywhere as the water inside surged out, turning the containment room into a small pond in an instant. It was so flooded there was nowhere left to stand.
Su Xi was carried out by Mephisto. Since his tattered clothes were barely decent, a black robe was draped over him, one he used to wear often, likely left behind in the room after a previous inspection.
Having been submerged for too long, Su Xi felt as if his skin had been soaked through. He let Mephisto hold him, lowering his lashes to recover his senses.
“Su Xi, are you staying with him, or coming with me?” Xiao Yangyao’s voice suddenly rang out. His face was streaked with blood from a small cut caused by a glass shard.
Su Xi knew how to distinguish between a mission target and a passing fling, but he was frustrated by Mephisto’s “Salvation Value,” which was stuck just ten points away from completion. If he failed the main mission, the System would judge it a failure, and failure meant erasure.
This was only his second world, could he really not make it through?
“Su Xi.” Receiving no answer, Xiao Yangyao called his name again. He didn’t believe for a second that the youth in the merman’s arms had actually fallen asleep.
Su Xi hesitated. He asked Mephisto to set him down, leaning on the merman’s arm for balance. He opened his weary eyes to look at Xiao Yangyao.
“I’ll go with you. Come and help me,” he said softly.
Beside him, Mephisto, who had been basking in their recent intimacy darkened visibly. He clearly hadn’t expected Su Xi to say that. He gripped Su Xi’s hand tightly. “What did you say?”
Su Xi stood on his tiptoes and pressed a reassuring kiss to the corner of Mephisto’s mouth. In a voice only the two of them could hear, he whispered, “I have something to say to him. Don’t worry, I’ll be back.”
Whether it was the kiss or the promise, Mephisto actually let go, allowing Su Xi to leave with Xiao Yangyao.
They walked in silence until they reached the corridor. Ensuring Mephisto hadn’t followed, Xiao Yangyao opened his mouth to speak, only to be met with a sharp slap across the face. The sound echoed through the silent space.
“Su…” His words died in his throat as he met Su Xi’s now perfectly clear, sharp eyes.
“Xiao Yangyao, you’re the mole in the Institute, aren’t you? Why did you do this? We all worked together… how could you…” Su Xi’s eyes rimmed with red, his butterfly-wing lashes trembling violently.
Xiao Yangyao wanted to explain that it was all for him, but the words wouldn’t come. He simply bowed his head, accepting the accusations and scolding.
“Don’t be angry anymore. It’s bad for your health,” he sighed eventually, catching Su Xi’s reddened hand.
“Rogue! Madman!”
Su Xi was truly angry. He had seen too much on his way here and was inevitably affected. Facing the culprit now, it was impossible to remain indifferent.
“Where is the backup device?” he asked, narrowing his eyes as he calmed his heart.
“With Mephisto,” Xiao Yangyao replied succinctly.
Su Xi sneered, his features still carrying the lingering traces of his recent passion. “You told me to follow you… can you even get me out of here?”
“I can,” Xiao Yangyao said without hesitation. “Just a few more days. I’ve already contacted the outside; backup will arrive soon.”
For a moment, Su Xi didn’t know whether to laugh at the man’s stupidity or his naivety. Xiao Yangyao hadn’t seemed this dim-witted before how could he believe they would be allowed to leave so easily?
Su Xi reached out and grabbed the man’s tie, forcing him to lean down and maintain eye contact. Word by word, he said, “But… I don’t believe you anymore.”
With that, he pushed the man away and began walking downstairs alone, leaning against the wall for support. He didn’t care if the man followed. In his mind, the System notification chimed. He lowered his head and smirked.
It worked.
On the third floor, he ran into A04. The man was a mess, covered in red and green fluids, looking like he had just finished a massacre. His unruly face was full of irritation, but he looked surprised to see Su Xi.
“A04, you…” Su Xi looked at the pile of subjects nearby and swallowed nervously. This wasn’t right. Why was A04 killing his own kind?
“Where are you going?” A04 rasped. “Are you leaving?”
“Where could I go?” Su Xi countered.
A04 traced Su Xi’s face with his eyes as if trying to engrave it into his memory forever. He spoke with a double meaning: “You made a wish to Uranus. Your wish will come true.”
Suddenly, a violent explosion rocked the Institute. Su Xi struggled to stay upright, looking toward the fourth floor with a grim expression.
“Xiao Ba, what happened?” Su Xi called out in his mind.
“Xiao Yangyao went to face Mephisto head-on,” 1368 replied briefly.
“What?!”
Su Xi’s eyes widened. He hadn’t expected things to go this way. If Xiao Yangyao killed Mephisto, what would happen to his mission? And if Mephisto killed Xiao Yangyao, wouldn’t he be next?
Inside the fourth-floor containment room, the area was in ruins. It could no longer be called a room. The air was thick with the scent of gunpowder. Though the area was wet, Xiao Yangyao had somehow managed to trigger a blast that tore a massive hole in the building, reducing nearly a third of the Institute to debris.
Mephisto stood unharmed on a high vantage point, looking down at the battered Xiao Yangyao. His gaze was as cold as a god judging a mortal.
“Get out if you don’t want to die,” he said.
Xiao Yangyao clutched a blood-stained sphere, his eyes full of mockery. “Do you think you’ve won? Guess when Su Xi is going to leave?”
The words were ambiguous, but Mephisto sensed something was wrong immediately. He realized this was a distraction, Xiao Yangyao was stalling for time.
His treasure wanted to leave him. His treasure was abandoning him.
How could he? He wouldn’t allow it.
They had agreed as long as he was good, Su Xi would stay forever.
Su Xi could only get the gist of the fourth-floor events through his System. He frantically dodged strange creatures emerging from the shadows tiny, spider-like swarms. A04 watched the show from nearby, only stepping in to help when Su Xi was at his limit.
Having been in Mephisto’s tank, Su Xi was still soaked. The rich orchid fragrance emanating from him acted as a beacon, drawing subjects toward him. By the time he reached the main entrance on the first floor, he felt a wave of lostness. Uranus appeared out of nowhere, grabbing his hand to pull him away from an attack.
“The backup device is in Room 139. Go there first,” Uranus said, his voice cold toward the threats but tender when looking at Su Xi.
However, they were outnumbered. There were simply too many subjects in the Institute. Su Xi was blocked halfway to Room 139. He looked for an escape, only to be sprayed by a jelly-like subject. The air smelled of cloyingly sweet syrup. It was C690; he remembered that this syrup had a magnetic, attracting property.
What a pain…
Su Xi frowned, pulling his black robe tighter to keep the scent from spreading too fast. He even tried to communicate with the mindless subjects, hoping they would disperse.
Finally, he reached the door to Room 139. He turned the handle and was met with a cloud of dust that made him cough. The storage room was dim, lit only by a faint desk lamp. He scanned the room as fast as possible but couldn’t see the backup device a square box with a master control button.
“Looking for this?”
At the sound of the voice, the device Su Xi had been searching for appeared before him. He instinctively reached for it, but froze the moment his hand touched the box.
“Mephisto!” he gasped, backing away in fear.
In the darkness, the merman’s voice sounded like sandpaper, incredibly husky. “If you wanted this, why didn’t you ask me?”
The hand gripping the back of Su Xi’s neck slid down, hovering at the collar of his black robe. A fingertip nudged the fabric aside, teasing and stroking the skin in an intimate manner.
Su Xi was burning hot, but his heart was cold. He feigned a calm voice: “I didn’t know you had it, Mephisto. I just wanted things to go back to how they were. Back then you didn’t like me, you hated me… but now you like me. So don’t be afraid, I won’t leave you.”
“You aren’t lying?” Mephisto’s voice held a trace of suspicion.
Su Xi turned pale, biting his lip as he spoke with a hurt expression. “You don’t believe me?” His lashes trembled as if he were about to cry. Tears clung to his lashes like a fragile porcelain doll that needed protection, a creature that would break at the slightest pain.
“I… no, don’t cry.” Every punishment Mephisto had planned vanished the moment he saw Su Xi like this. He carefully wiped away the tears and handed over the backup device.
Having achieved his goal, Su Xi stopped his tears. He opened the device and pressed the button. The world suddenly fell into a profound silence. Before he could even check the notification for the hidden mission, he looked up at Mephisto.
Faced with such a beautiful, alluring merman, he couldn’t help but feel a pang of emotion. He asked, “Mephisto… why are you crying?”
