- Chapter 49 - Fuguang Institute (19) — "As My Supervisor, Are You Planning to..."
Su Xi had announced his departure, and while Uranus was loath to let him go, he didn’t want to leave Su Xi with the impression that he was disobedient. After a long silence, he eventually compromised.
The spacious corridors were utterly deserted and deathly silent. Outside the large glass windows, heavy snowflakes drifted down, draping the surrounding buildings and vegetation in a coat of silver-white. In the vast expanse of snow, no other colors remained.
Su Xi leaned against the window frame, his cold expression masking his thoughts as the events of the past few days played in his mind like a revolving lantern. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a few chocolates, and swallowed them. The bitter aroma of cocoa filled his mouth, mixed with the faint sweetness of hazelnuts.
He looked calm, yet the walls and floors behind him were stained with fluids of various colors, and the air was a thick, stagnant mix of odors.
After resting for a long while, he walked unhurriedly toward the containment room on the fourth floor. Just as expected, Mephisto was waiting for him obediently. Upon seeing Su Xi, the merman emerged from the tank and moved through the interface to the edge of the pool.
“You’re here.” There was a hint of joy in Mephisto’s voice. His previous irritation vanished as he stepped forward, nuzzling his cheek against Su Xi’s palm like a gentle, harmless creature.
Looking at Mephisto’s breathtaking, androgynous face, Su Xi let a small smile play on his lips. “Mm. Sorry, I ran into some trouble, but someone handled it for me.”
The “trouble” referred to the obstructive subjects on the second floor, and the “someone” was, naturally, A04.
Su Xi reached out to stroke Mephisto’s head. The pale gold hair was soft to the touch. He caught the faint, lingering scent of blood in the air but feigned ignorance. “Did someone come looking for you?”
“No,” Mephisto shook his head in denial.
Due to his sudden movement, water from the pool splashed onto the tiled floor, leaving it slick and wet.
“Liar.” Su Xi’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it reached Mephisto’s ears clearly. His tone was light and devoid of emotion, but the merman in the water could sense his anger immediately.
Mephisto reached out in a panic to grab Su Xi, but the man shifted imperceptibly, avoiding the touch and stepping back a few paces.
“I saw them. I saw them!” he hurriedly corrected himself.
Standing three meters away from the pool, Su Xi looked down at the merman. He tilted his head. “And what did you talk about?”
“…”
Mephisto fell silent. He was debating whether to answer truthfully or lie. He didn’t want Su Xi to hate him, but he knew that if he told the truth about the deal, Su Xi would surely be angry.
As the silence stretched on, Su Xi’s brow furrowed with impatience. He seemed to lose the last of his patience. “You’re not going to tell me?”
By all rights, Mephisto’s strength gave him the upper hand, yet in this moment, he adopted the posture of a subordinate begging for favor. When the power dynamic inverted, the true goal was achieved. Su Xi suppressed the urge to smirk, maintaining his usual cold mask. He stepped forward slowly and extended his arm; beneath the fair skin, his blue veins were faintly visible.
“Mephisto, I heard that what your kind likes to eat most is humans. Is that right?” he asked.
“Mm.” Mephisto caught a glimpse of a restless tentacle outside the door. Beneath the water, his thumb rhythmically stroked a smooth pearl. There was no emotion in his emerald eyes.
Su Xi made a seemingly casual suggestion: “Then, do you want to try?”
He was inviting Mephisto to eat him alive a violent, bloody proposal. Mephisto, of course, would never agree; he knew this was merely a provocation and a threat.
“I don’t want to.”
His tone sounded aggrieved, and even his eyes drooped. “I like you. It’s not because I want to eat you. It’s because I want to do the most intimate things with you. You are my treasure, and you belong only to me.”
Facing this confession, Su Xi accepted it readily. He reached out and playfully pinched Mephisto’s chin. “Then how will you prove that you like me?”
Mephisto’s way of thinking still differed from a human’s. He seemed to ponder the question seriously for a moment before using Su Xi’s hand as leverage to pull himself up. In the next second, a cool kiss landed, carrying the salty, bitter taste of the deep sea.
Caught off guard, Su Xi was drawn into a passionate, wet kiss. By the time they parted, a rosy flush had climbed onto his porcelain face. He was slightly annoyed. “Why did you suddenly kiss me?”
“Proof.” Mephisto held onto him, wanting to continue.
Now that Su Xi had regained his senses, he wasn’t about to let the merman have his way. He tried to turn his head away, but his chin was gripped and forced back. His delicate red lips were glistening. Mephisto bit down on his lip, licking and sucking as if savoring a rare delicacy.
Su Xi struggled to breathe. Frowning, he bit Mephisto back hard. The metallic tang of blood filled their mouths. Saliva he couldn’t swallow trickled down, and Su Xi felt his lips go numb.
Despite the pain, Mephisto didn’t stop until Su Xi’s cheeks were flushed crimson and his body began to tremble uncontrollably. Only then did he let go, looking like a well-behaved child waiting for punishment.
“You…” The reprimand on the tip of Su Xi’s tongue died away. He bit his lip to suppress the strange sensations rising in his body, letting out a helpless sigh. In his peripheral vision, he noticed A04 lingering outside the door. He wasn’t surprised.
He shook his head, feeling dizzy. With nothing nearby to lean on, he rasped for Mephisto to come out of the pool. Realizing he had crossed a line earlier, Mephisto climbed out without a word and let the man lean against him.
“Hold me,” Su Xi commanded.
Mephisto’s body temperature was too low, making Su Xi feel cold, yet he craved the contact. Caught in a conflict of senses, he muttered, “You’re so cold. It’s not comfortable at all.”
“Not everything is cold.”
Mephisto’s answer was brief. A faint blush appeared on his beautiful face as he wrapped his arms around Su Xi’s waist. “Where is the necklace I gave you?”
Hearing this, Su Xi pulled the necklace out from under his shirt. “I’m wearing it,” he said teasingly. “But you’re always the one giving me gifts. Good children deserve rewards. Even though you made a mistake just now, I’ve forgiven you. Is there anything you want?”
He was merely trying to keep Mephisto happy. In the chaos of the Fuguang Institute, what could an isolated researcher like him possibly give?
“I want you… to stay with me forever,” Mephisto answered without hesitation.
“Oh?” Su Xi’s brow arched. As he felt the heat rising in his body, his inner turmoil grew. He felt a sudden urge to smash things, a side effect of the “skin hunger.”
His eyes, rimmed with red, lowered as a stray tear escaped. He reached out and tightly gripped Mephisto’s hand. “I feel so miserable right now… touch me…”
His sudden change of heart was within Mephisto’s expectations, yet the merman still acted surprised and worried. He reached out to touch Su Xi’s forehead, checking for a fever.
Su Xi realized that while the condition hadn’t been severe when he first arrived, it was becoming unbearable as time went on. If he stayed much longer, he feared he would lose his mind. On many nights, he had tossed and turned, nearly driven to self-harm to relieve the craving, only managing to sleep through the help of System-provided sedatives.
Mephisto felt the skin beneath his hand smooth and delicate, not feverish. He pulled the man closer. As their skin met, he could feel Su Xi’s body shuddering violently, his eyes growing increasingly misty.
So, this is ‘skin hunger’?
Su Xi didn’t know why this episode was so intense. Mere hugs and kisses weren’t enough. He wanted something more intimate, something hotter. As his consciousness began to fade into chaos, he guided the merman’s hand beneath his oversized shirt. The cold hand made him flinch, but he endured it in silence.
“Mephisto, you have a way to help, right?” His voice was now laced with tears.
Faced with Su Xi’s sudden emotional shift, Mephisto’s feelings were complex. He leaned down to kiss those lips while his movements became more daring, reaching down toward the slicker territory. “Mm. I will help you.”
In the dead of night at the Fuguang Institute, grotesque subjects roamed the halls.
In the fourth-floor containment room, the only safe haven in the building the usually aloof researcher was pinned between the glass and a cold chest. With every intense movement, the green water in the tank rippled in waves.
Slender, pale arms pressed weakly against the glass. Su Xi kept his eyes shut tight. He didn’t know how he was able to breathe underwater, but he knew exactly who the former owners of the jewelry piled at his feet were.
What Mephisto wanted to do was self-evident.
“Open your eyes. Don’t be afraid,” Mephisto whispered into his ear.
Su Xi’s lashes trembled as he whimpered. He was the one who had asked for help; whatever happened now was his own choice. He slowly opened his eyes, only to find himself looking through the glass into a pair of deep, dark eyes. It was Xiao Yangyao.
The man stood outside, watching them. Su Xi didn’t know how long he had been there. Even though the water was dark and the interior shouldn’t have been clearly visible from the outside, he felt a pang of guilt.
“Why are you shaking so much?” Mephisto tilted Su Xi’s chin up to kiss him, his sharp gaze sweeping over Xiao Yangyao, who had suddenly appeared in the room.
“Don’t…” Su Xi tried to pull away from Mephisto’s touch, but the merman began to lick his earlobe, a cool tongue sweeping over the sensitive shell of his ear.
Mephisto’s voice was husky. “As my supervisor, are you planning to just throw me away once you’re done using me?”
