- Chapter 17 - Lift Your Head, Open Your Mouth and Let Me See
Inside the restroom, Su Xi unhurriedly pulled out a paper towel to dry his hands, appearing completely indifferent to the sounds of the commotion outside. He casually tossed the crumpled towel into the trash can. His expression was calm nothing like the weak, easy-to-bully persona he displayed in front of others.
The corridor was noisy and packed with people; some were even leaning out of windows to catch the drama. As the protagonists of this farce, the reason for their dispute remained a mystery, but Fu Heng’s previously pristine clothes were now covered in dust and footprints, and his attire was wrinkled beyond recognition. Standing diagonally across from him, Li Huai’s eyes were lowered. He had taken several solid punches to the face and was now scowling, using his hand to wipe a bead of blood from the corner of his mouth.
“Why did they suddenly start fighting?”
“Don’t Li Huai and Fu Heng not even know each other? Is there some deep-seated grudge for them to hit each other this hard?”
The bewildered onlookers whispered among themselves, yet not a single person dared to step forward to break up the fight.
Li Huai seemed not to care about the surrounding gazes. His eyes were fixed on Fu Heng as he demanded, “Did you touch him?”
Hearing this, a trace of impatience surfaced in Fu Heng’s cold features. He let out a chilling scoff: “What business is it of yours?”
This icy remark acted as the final fuse to ignite tempers in the scorching summer heat. Li Huai’s temple throbbed as he lunged forward, grabbing Fu Heng by the collar to strike again. Unexpectedly, a startled cry rang in his ear; his clothes were grabbed from behind, and he was pulled back several steps before he could stop.
“What do you think you’re doing?” Su Xi hadn’t actually used much force to pull Li Huai away. His gaze swept over the surrounding crowd before landing on the two disheveled men. He frowned. “How old are the two of you? Why are you still getting into fights?”
“Xi…” Li Huai was the first to speak, his tone carrying a trace of grievance he hadn’t even noticed himself.
Su Xi reached out to touch the man’s face, only for Li Huai to let out a sharp hiss of pain. Su Xi withdrew his hand, feeling a bit distressed. “Both of you, come with me to the infirmary first.”
The infirmary, usually very quiet, was suddenly occupied by two patients. The doctor on duty let out a helpless sigh and worked diligently to apply medicine and treat the wounds. Fortunately, an Alpha’s self-healing ability was stronger than that of a normal person, so the process didn’t take very long.
In the waiting room, which smelled of disinfectant, Fu Heng and Li Huai sat at opposite ends of a long bench. Su Xi sat across from them with his arms folded. Looking at the bandages on both men, he twitched his lips. “Alright, tell me. Why did you suddenly start fighting?”
After receiving no answer for a long while, he turned impatiently to Li Huai on the left, speaking in a half-threatening, half-commanding tone: “Li Huai, you talk.”
Meeting Su Xi’s eyes, Li Huai felt as though his inner thoughts were being seen through. He lowered his head and remained silent.
Seeing that Li Huai wouldn’t speak, Su Xi shifted his gaze to Fu Heng. However, the man looked like he had no intention of explaining the reason either. Clearly frustrated by the lack of an answer, Su Xi stood up abruptly and turned to leave.
“System, what were they saying in the corridor just now?” Since he couldn’t get an answer from them, Su Xi could only ask his system.
System 1368 seemed a bit hesitant, stammering for a moment before answering: “Li Huai asked Fu Heng why your pheromone scent was so thick on him, and then Fu Heng said you two… and then they started fighting.”
The information was overwhelming. Su Xi froze for a good while before reacting. He touched the gland on the back of his neck, his eyelashes trembling to hide his emotions. “I thought Fu Heng looked like he had turned normal today, but it turns out he was just faking it.”
He looked up at the bright sun and let out an almost inaudible sigh. Indeed, the road to completing the mission was long and arduous. Feeling a bit thirsty halfway, he stopped at a nearby convenience store. Su Xi, who originally only came to buy a bottle of water, found himself unable to move past the shelves lined with a dazzling array of colorful candies.
His fingers drifted over the various flavors, seemingly torn on which to choose. “Strawberry, mango, orange, grape…”
The packaging clearly showed that each flavor featured different patterns, and they even came with matching gashapon-style card-collecting toys. Su Xi pursed his lips and, after a moment of silence, decided to take them all.
“Buying so much candy?”
The cashier girl saw Su Xi holding so much candy and immediately put down her work to help him, taking the bags and placing them all on the counter.
“Thank you.” Su Xi thanked her with a smile. Suddenly, he heard a boy standing behind him in line ask if he needed help. After paying, Su Xi looked at the bags and shook his head, saying he could carry them.
Finding a cool, secluded corner inside the store, Su Xi began unwrapping the candies with great interest. Each bag contained about ten pieces of candy in different shapes, some with animal patterns. However, what attracted him most were the card-collecting toys; he had heard the “hidden edition” was a heterochromatic-eyed kitten.
“Host, you’re so childish,” System 1368 said abruptly, seeing Su Xi unwrap nearly fifty bags of candy without looking tired.
“Childish? This is called having a heart that’s still young.” Su Xi nonchalantly moved the candies to the side, lining up the newly unwrapped puppy toys in a neat row.
“How can I unwrap so many and not find a single hidden edition? Is my luck really this bad?” Su Xi looked at the pile of trash, once again doubting himself.
Was he really born under an unlucky star?
“Hidden editions only appear once every three hundred bags; it’s normal not to get one…” The system offered timely comfort. Just as it was about to add more, it heard the boy nearby stand up abruptly, the chair making a sharp screeching sound against the floor.
Su Xi naturally heard the noise too. He turned around and recognized the boy as the one who had asked if he needed help earlier. His gaze landed on the exquisite, small kitten figurine in the boy’s hand. He pursed his lips and spoke in a trace of shock: “He actually got one.”
Faced with this situation, the system didn’t know how to respond, so it stayed silent for a long time before squeezing out: “Maybe he’s just a lucky star today.”
“So much candy… I definitely won’t be able to finish it all…”
Su Xi had enjoyed the unwrapping process, but looking at the scattered bits of candy in front of him, he frowned in distress.
In the end, Su Xi only kept a few pieces for himself and left the rest on the checkout counter, telling the cashier she could give them to subsequent customers.
He lowered his head and stuffed the little animals he had unwrapped into his pocket. Suddenly, someone tapped him from behind. Su Xi turned back in surprise.
“Su Xi, here, let me give this to you.” The shy-looking boy placed the heterochromatic-eyed kitten on the table in front of Su Xi, scratching his head awkwardly.
Su Xi truly did love this hidden edition kitten otherwise, he wouldn’t have bought so much candy. One of the kitten’s eyes was a clear light green, like a glass bead, while the other was a deep ocean blue, like a jewel on a crown. Its snow-white fur made it look incredibly well-behaved.
“Really?” He pursed his lips hesitantly and continued, “But you’re the one who found it…”
“It’s okay, I already have one at home,” the boy said, shaking his head quickly. “If you feel bad about it, you can trade me one of yours.”
“No need for a trade, you can have all of these.” Su Xi gave all the little animals he had just put in his pocket to the boy. He picked up the kitten and looked into its beautiful eyes, nodding in satisfaction.
Su Xi stayed in the supermarket for half an hour before leaving. Just after he left, the store was suddenly swamped by a crowd of people, making it impassable.
He let out a yawn and rubbed his aching eyes as he headed back to his dormitory. The dorms at Qingling Academy were divided by gender and grade; Omegas, who were fewer in number, lived in apartment-style single-story houses.
Su Xi usually lived here when he wasn’t leaving campus, though since he started staying with Duan Cheng to better complete the mission, he hadn’t been back in a long time.
After the identity recognition passed, Su Xi changed his shoes at the entrance. Exhausted, he walked to the sofa and flopped onto it, pulling a throw pillow into his arms. He stared at the white ceiling for a while, dazed.
Suddenly feeling something pressing against his waist, he remembered the kitten he had traded for earlier. He carefully took it out and placed it on the table. After checking that it was still in perfect condition, he let out a sigh of relief.
“I’m a bit sleepy, I’m going to take a nap.” After telling the system, Su Xi lay directly on the sofa and drifted into a muddled sleep.
By the time he woke up again, the sky outside was dark. Su Xi blinked and went to the kitchen to scrounge for a few bags of crackers, barely replenishing enough energy to go out and look for real food. To his surprise, he met an unexpected person at the door.
“A-Cheng, why are you here?” He almost failed to control his expression, staring blankly at the man’s cold face and asking cautiously, “I just fell asleep, I might not have heard you.”
Duan Cheng’s gaze landed on the boy’s messy clothes. Su Xi’s hair was also a bit disheveled, with a few stray hairs on his forehead and a stubborn “ahoge” sticking up. His face still held the rosy flush of someone who had just woken up.
“I brought you food. It’s raining outside.” Duan Cheng showed the bags in his hand to Su Xi. Su Xi immediately recognized it as the tomato beef brisket noodles he had casually mentioned wanting to eat before.
“A-Cheng, you’re the best. I like you the most.”
Su Xi stepped aside to let Duan Cheng in. Once the man was inside, he closed the door and walked toward the dining table. Suddenly remembering something, he ran back to the living room and hid the kitten figurine behind his back.
With a mysterious air, Su Xi held the kitten out to Duan Cheng and said with a smile, “Ta-da!”
Duan Cheng naturally saw the little toy in the boy’s hand. A trace of surprise flashed in his eyes. He asked softly, “What is this?”
“A kitten! It’s for you. I worked really hard to get it.” Su Xi then grabbed the candies he had kept for himself and placed them all on the table. He continued, “To get this kitten, I bought so much candy my teeth almost started aching.”
“Eating too many sweets leads to cavities.” Duan Cheng reached out and tilted the boy’s chin up. His eyes darkened, and his tone was non-negotiable: “Open your mouth and let me see.”
