- Chapter 16 - Losing Control and Falling Easily
The system’s cold, mechanical voice rang clearly in his mind. Su Xi lowered his eyes to steady his emotions. When he looked up at Fu Heng again, his eyes held a trace of bewilderment, but he obediently entered the room they had been in.
Having only stayed inside for a moment earlier, he hadn’t looked closely. Now, scanning the area, he saw silver-white test benches lined with various instruments, high racks draped with plastic and leather bags, and polished cabinets housing test tubes filled with colorful liquids.
“Do you feel unwell anywhere?” Fu Heng wanted to step forward but ultimately stopped half a meter away. His cold gaze lowered as he explained, “The scent on you is too strong. Why did you come out alone?”
Su Xi was surprised. He sniffed but didn’t detect any strange odors.
“What scent?” he asked.
Even though Fu Heng was angry internally, his face remained calm. He walked over to the console, picked up a palm-sized detector, and approached Su Xi. The instrument’s screen flickered and displayed a reading.
“Alpha pheromone levels: seventy percent,” he reported.
As everyone knew, even when an Omega was temporarily marked by an Alpha, the reading would not exceed sixty percent. One could imagine the extent of what Su Xi had done with someone to have such a thick scent. His field of study and research matched this perfectly; the conclusion had already surfaced in his heart.
“How is that possible…” Su Xi’s pupils shrank. He had felt that some people’s gazes on the way here were far too strange undisguised and blunt. He pursed his lips, reached out to peel off the scent-blocking patch from his neck, and muttered indistinctly, “I even layered two patches. Is it still detectable?”
Su Xi’s proximity caused Fu Heng to daze for a brief moment. He thought that after what happened last time, the boy would have learned his lesson and stayed away. He hadn’t expected him to expose his gland again so defenselessly.
“Yes. It’s very fragrant.” Fu Heng restrained his instinctive urges. The orchid scent filling his nose was too intoxicating. The tips of his ears turned red, the heat even spreading down his neck.
Su Xi frowned irritably, complaining in dissatisfaction, “So many patches on the market and none of them work… maybe I should just go and have the gland removed.”
“No,” Fu Heng interrupted directly. “Removing the gland causes irreversible damage. Your constitution is weak; you wouldn’t survive it. This is likely happening because the gland is developing. It’s alright; it will get better after a while.”
“Then I’m relieved.” Su Xi listened intently to Fu Heng’s words. Thinking of something else, he asked in confusion, “Fu Heng, is the influence of pheromones really that big?”
Su Xi’s tone was incredibly innocent. This was common knowledge that any normal person would know, yet the person before him seemed to have been protected too well, he was so ignorant that he would ask such a question.
“If one’s willpower isn’t firm enough, it’s easy to lose control and fall,” Fu Heng replied simply.
“Then why don’t you release a little of your pheromones? I haven’t tried it yet.” Su Xi made the request with eager anticipation. His previous world didn’t have these strange settings; he had only occasionally scrolled past some related introductions online, but they were all very vague.
If not for the data the system gave him when he first arrived, he truly wouldn’t be clear on this.
Hearing the request, Fu Heng’s internal emotions grew complex. He put the detector back in its place and walked up to the boy, his eyes darkening as he looked at the slightly swollen gland. “Do you know what you’re saying?”
“Just a little bit, nothing will happen.” Su Xi looked up at Fu Heng dismissively, his mind racing with information about the man. He teased playfully, “Don’t you like me too? Wouldn’t you be happy if I had a reaction?”
The arrogant and overbearing young master had always done whatever came to mind, never needing a proper reason for his actions.
He chuckled, fanning the flames: “Everyone says we’re the ones who are supposed to be together.”
The person who had been cold and distant toward him recently had suddenly returned to his side. Fu Heng felt his heart, which had been empty for the past few days, fill up like a balloon being steadily inflated.
Their compatibility rating was as high as ninety percent an extremely rare value that meant they were destined to be attracted to each other. He knew better than anyone how fatal Su Xi was to him.
Looking into those clear eyes, his heart beat so violently it seemed ready to burst through his ribs. Suppressing his abnormal emotions, he said, “It’s almost time for class. You’ll lose points if you’re late.”
“What does that matter?” Su Xi reached out and grabbed the man’s collar. Seeing his flustered state, he let out a scoff and teased, “Fu Heng, you’re such a coward. I’ll definitely be fine with just a little bit.”
His next sentence was “How boring,” as he let go to distance himself. Sensing a sudden change in the atmosphere of the room, Su Xi recalled the image of being suppressed by others. He somewhat frantically stuck the patch back on and explained vaguely, “I was just saying. Don’t be mad.”
The system wanted him to grind Fu Heng’s favorability but didn’t give him the specific value. What if he pushed his luck too far and got “executed” on the spot?
“No, enough…” Su Xi’s body went soft, out of his control, triggered by Fu Heng’s pheromones. Even the corners of his eyes were burned a fiery red. He stumbled back several steps until his back hit the cold wall. The images before him began to blur and overlap.
Fu Heng looked at the boy’s flushed face, his exquisite features shimmering with desire. Yet the boy was frowning, his body unable to stop trembling as he looked up. Fu Heng used the boy’s own words: “Can’t handle even this little bit?”
There was a hint of undetectable amusement in his voice. Those eyes, usually so cold, now reflected only Su Xi’s silhouette. The “God of Learning,” whom outsiders deemed unreachable, loved only two things: studying, and Su Xi.
Su Xi glared at Fu Heng, but in the man’s eyes, that look was not one of anger, but a bashful, angry reproach.
Fu Heng looked down at the hand clutching his clothes fair, slender, with neatly trimmed nails like a fine work of art. The delicate wrist looked as if it would snap with just a little pressure.
Seeing the man still unmoved, Su Xi threw caution to the wind. He tore off the newly applied patch and threw it on the floor. Standing on his tiptoes to get close to Fu Heng’s face, he said fiercely, “If I’m miserable, don’t you think you’re going to have it any better.”
Have it better?
Fu Heng scoffed internally. If Su Xi was miserable, he would only be more so; how could he possibly have it better? Su Xi didn’t know the pathetic state he was in under his oversized lab coat, so the boy was naturally being pushy and fearless.
A typical case of “forgetting the pain once the wound heals.”
“Aren’t you afraid Duan Cheng will be angry, doing this with me?” Fu Heng’s thumb brushed over the sensitive gland, and after triggering a shiver, he spoke with an unreadable tone.
Hearing Duan Cheng’s name, the hand Su Xi used to grip the man’s hem paused. A trace of bewilderment flashed in his eyes. He lowered his eyelashes as if heartbroken, tears falling down his cheeks like broken pearls. His voice, tinged with a sob, turned hoarse: “It’s not like I really like him. Who I truly love… it’s not like you don’t know. And yet you still ask…”
The sudden turn of events threw Fu Heng into a panic. His whole heart and mind were occupied by the crying Su Xi. He reached out to wipe away the wet tears; the cool sensation startled him. He leaned down and apologized, “Don’t be mad. It’s my fault.”
Faced with Su Xi’s red-rimmed eyes and tear-streaked face, it didn’t matter whose fault it was anymore. He wished he could bring all the beautiful and rare things in the world to the boy just to make him happy. Every scorching tear fell into his heart, creating ripples that tugged at his heartstrings.
“Host, you...” System 1368 saw Su Xi crying so heart-wrenchingly that its backend data lagged. It truly couldn’t tell if he was acting or if it was real.
Su Xi lifted his eyes to glance at Fu Heng, seeing the traces of haste on the man’s otherwise calm face. Pretending to be unaware, he stepped forward and took the man’s hand, giving it a gentle shake: “My birthday is in two days. You must be the first to come and give me a gift.”
His birthday banquet was a major event. If Fu Heng didn’t show up, how could he put on a show for Duan Cheng?
“Mm. I will,” Fu Heng promised seriously, tightening his grip on the boy’s hand.
By the time he finished with Fu Heng in the room, Su Xi’s class was half over. Normally, he wouldn’t be allowed in, but with Fu Heng there, he was smoothly led to the third-floor laboratory classroom using the man’s permissions. The teacher wasn’t in the room, likely having stepped out for something.
Su Xi followed obediently behind Fu Heng until he saw Li Huai, who was leaning lazily against the back door playing with a black pen. Li Huai was surrounded by a swarm of girls who were actively trying to find topics to chat with him about; his tall figure looked completely out of place in the middle of the crowd.
“What’s wrong?” Fu Heng noticed Su Xi had stopped and turned back with concern.
Su Xi’s hands at his sides gripped the hem of his shirt. A few flashes of unease and anxiety passed through his eyes. He pretended to be embarrassed and whispered, “I want to go to the restroom.”
“Hmm?” Fu Heng was momentarily surprised, but quickly added: “Then I’ll go with you.”
How could Su Xi dare to refuse? When Fu Heng entered earlier, many people had already noticed. If they made more noise, wouldn’t he be caught red-handed by Li Huai? The lies he had told the man before would all be exposed.
Little did he know, before he had even reached the classroom door, Li Huai had already caught that familiar, rich orchid fragrance. He was just pretending not to know.
He watched as Su Xi and Fu Heng walked through the corridor one after the other and disappeared around the corner. He apologized to the girls nearby, left the crowd, and walked quickly toward the place where the two had last been seen.
In the restroom, Su Xi slowly rinsed his hands. He heard several footsteps outside but acted as if he hadn’t, simply asking the system casually, “Did Li Huai follow?”
“Host, you were right. He really did follow,” System 1368 responded in surprise. “But why do you want him and Fu Heng to meet?”
“In the original world, the protagonists are attracted to each other after meeting. They’re the true love; I’m just an accident.” Su Xi was certain of this. He didn’t know how much Fu Heng and Li Huai liked him, but looking at the progress bar the system provided, Fu Heng’s line seemed nearly full.
The mission only said to raise favorability, not necessarily to max it out. This level was just right; if things were explained later, there wouldn’t be any unsolvable problems.
“But they’re fighting outside right now!” System 1368 was shocked.
“Fighting is kissing, scolding is love. Without fighting or scolding, there’s no love. Isn’t your setting ‘strong-strong tension’? Friction is inevitable between two Alphas like Fu Heng and Li Huai.”
Looking at the chaotic scene, 1368 couldn’t help but let out a sharp, electronic shriek.
“No! Duan Cheng is here too!”
