- Chapter 11 - Loving Someone Doesn't Require a Reason...
Under normal circumstances, Su Xi stayed at school, only occasionally returning to the family estate. Today, having the rare urge to help Duan Cheng, he asked the system for the location of the principal’s office. The system informed him it was on the sixth floor of the Deyun Building.
Su Xi fell silent for two seconds before simply opening his communicator and sending a message.
He was too lazy to walk there himself; it was far more convenient to have the man come to him.
About ten minutes after the message was sent, Principal Wang, who had been happily brewing tea in his office, arrived in a hurried rush. He pushed open the door to the music room. Inside the spacious chamber, soft white silk curtains swayed with the breeze. The strikingly beautiful young master sat atop the piano, listlessly flipping through a sheet of music.
“You’re here?” Su Xi didn’t move, merely lifting his eyes to look at the middle-aged man entering the room.
Wang He, the principal of Qingling Academy, was a man in his forties with a rounded build and average height. He looked kindly in his formal suit. Hearing Su Xi speak, he took a few steps closer and said, “Young Master Su, I have already assigned a specialized team to handle the matter you mentioned. I guarantee it will be resolved properly.”
The principal, who was usually so full of himself outside, possessed none of his usual dignity or gravity in front of Su Xi.
“Where is Duan Cheng’s physical examination report?” Su Xi nodded perfunctorily. His main reason for seeking out the principal was to address the discrimination against Betas in the school; his secondary goal was to learn more about Duan Cheng. Despite several attempts to test the man, he remained suspicious of his status as a Beta.
“I brought it.” Wang He pulled a paper document from his briefcase and handed it to Su Xi.
After receiving the documents, Su Xi untied the string on the kraft paper envelope. Seeing the man still standing there, he said casually, “Alright, you can head back now.”
Once the principal had left, Su Xi pulled the files from the envelope. Next to the black-and-white blood test results was a line of text: Upon examination, the student is a Beta. No special conditions found.
“He really is a Beta…” Su Xi murmured softly.
He pursed his lips, dismissing the suspicion in his heart. However, out of the corner of his eye, he spotted Duan Cheng standing outside the large floor-to-ceiling glass window. It was unclear how long he had been watching. The man stood beneath a lush plane tree; his cold, handsome face was expressionless, save for a slight flicker in his eyes when Su Xi looked up.
From Duan Cheng’s perspective, the scene inside the music room was fully visible. The exquisite youth sat lazily, swinging his straight, fair legs. His slightly rounded eyes revealed a trace of panic, and everything about the scene seemed to compose a beautiful portrait.
“Is class over? I didn’t hear the bell.” Su Xi haphazardly stuffed the documents back into the envelope and buried them under a thick stack of sheet music. He jumped down from the piano to meet Duan Cheng as he pushed the door open. He reached out to take the man’s hand, but Duan Cheng sidestepped him. “A-Cheng?”
Duan Cheng cast a seemingly casual glance at the piano, his eyebrows arching slightly. “You know how to play?”
“A little.” Su Xi tried to block the man’s frequent glances toward the piano, but since he was much shorter than Duan Cheng, he eventually exhausted himself trying. He simply walked over to the piano and suggested, “If you want to hear it, I’ll show you what I can do.”
But just as his fingers touched the black and white keys, they were pressed down firmly by someone else. The forceful strike produced a chaotic and piercing sound from the instrument.
Puzzled, he glanced sideways at Duan Cheng. Following the man’s gaze, he saw a piece of paper lying on the intricately patterned, dark-colored carpet. He squinted to see the words it was exactly one page of Duan Cheng’s physical report. How had it fallen out?
“If you want to know these things, you can just ask me,” Duan Cheng said after a moment of silence, his eyes fixed on Su Xi’s hand resting on the keys.
Su Xi tried to move aside, but Duan Cheng had already anticipated his intent. After a whirlwind of movement, he found himself pinned against the piano. The hard surface dug painfully into his back. His voice trembled slightly: “I just thought having the documents would be convenient, so I didn’t ask…”
Evidently, his answer did not satisfy Duan Cheng, and the man did not let go. Su Xi froze for two seconds before proactively wrapping his arms around the man’s waist. He hugged him like a kitten nuzzling a shoulder and apologized in a soft voice, “I won’t do it again. Don’t be mad. I’ll give you some candy.”
He fished a few colorful fruit candies out of his pocket and held them all out to the man.
Faced with Su Xi’s weakness and attempts to please him, Duan Cheng was clearly mollified. His expression softened significantly, though he still didn’t take the candy. He released the hands pinning the boy and pulled him over to sit on a soft chair.
Seeing that the man wouldn’t eat the candy, Su Xi didn’t force him. He simply picked out a grape-flavored one, unwrapped it, and popped it into his mouth. The rich, sweet fruit flavor spread between his teeth, boosting his dopamine levels.
Breathing in the scent of orchids mixed with fruit candy, Duan Cheng looked at the boy’s moist, crimson lips and suddenly asked softly, “Su Xi, why do you like me?”
“Huh?” Su Xi replied somewhat indistinctly through the candy. “Liking someone is just liking someone. Does there have to be a reason? If I had to say… it’s because you’re handsome.”
He was indeed a “visual animal” and rather shallow. Since he was so wealthy in this world, he could afford to care only about looks. The villain Duan Cheng’s appearance happened to hit all his aesthetic preferences it was that kind of extremely cold yet sharp look, with superior bone structure, narrow eyes, a high bridge to his nose, and thin lips. Just looking at him made Su Xi’s body feel soft; he couldn’t look away.
“You don’t have any more classes, right? I’ll take you for a walk.” Hearing Su Xi’s answer, Duan Cheng didn’t look overly pleased, nor was he cold. He reached out to brush away the stray hairs covering Su Xi’s eyes, his fingers sliding over the boy’s fair, smooth cheek and his thumb brushing against his red lips. “Is the candy good?”
“It’s good,” Su Xi nodded earnestly. He was about to reach for another candy when, unexpectedly, Duan Cheng leaned in and kissed him. It was a light kiss, a mere sampling, and Su Xi remained still, letting the man take what he wanted.
Duan Cheng: “The taste is indeed not bad.”
Ah! Su Xi’s face flushed from the kiss. A brainstorm erupted in his blank mind as he tried to process why Duan Cheng would do such a thing.
He just kissed him… so brazenly?
After classes ended, Su Xi was dragged by Duan Cheng to walk in the school’s rear garden. He had initially wanted to refuse it was too hot, and he didn’t want to wander aimlessly under the scorching sun. Getting all sticky and sweaty was uncomfortable. But Duan Cheng claimed that staying indoors all the time was bad for his health and that a walk in the sun would help build a healthy body.
Su Xi glared at the bright sun and stood his ground, refusing to move. Pouting, he said, “I’m so tired. A-Cheng, let’s go back to the dorm and sleep for a bit.”
Duan Cheng knelt down, took a bottle of ice water he had just bought from a vending machine, and pressed it against the boy’s neck to cool him down. He watched as the boy’s face grew increasingly flushed from the heat, his red lips slightly parted to unconsciously reveal a small tip of a pink tongue. The scent-blocking patch wasn’t waterproof and was quickly losing its effectiveness. As classes let out, the number of pedestrians increased, including many Alphas affected by Su Xi’s pheromones.
Su Xi was too dull to notice, but Duan Cheng saw it all the covetous looks from others, and some who were even starting to let their eyes wander under the guise of normalcy.
Su Xi felt it was a bit strange that the man gave in so quickly, but it was a good thing for him. He simply climbed onto the man’s back, letting Duan Cheng carry him toward the dormitory. Although it was hot this way, he truly had no energy left.
Besides, doing this was like publicly announcing his relationship with Duan Cheng to everyone else.
Su Xi folded his hands loosely over the man’s chest and closed his eyes against his shoulder. He was so exhausted that he drifted into a daze even with the jolting of the walk. Before falling asleep, he told Duan Cheng to wake him up if he didn’t wake up on his own.
Inside the dim room, Duan Cheng turned on the light at the door and gently placed the boy on the sofa. Watching Su Xi sleep soundly with his eyelashes trembling, he went to the bathroom to get water and a towel to wipe the boy down. His movements were fluid and methodical. Seeing the two cherry-red spots on the boy’s jade-like skin, he looked away and wiped his lotus-root-like arms as if he hadn’t seen a thing.
In a pitch-black environment, Su Xi felt a flash of white light. He found himself sitting in a chair in front of live-streaming equipment and a screen. He froze for a long time, feeling dazed, and tentatively called for the system twice, receiving a response both times. On the public screen in his line of sight, various comments were flashing by rapidly. Gift effects rose slowly across the screen, followed by the jumping numbers in the backend.
【Susu, why are you dazing? It looks like someone is looking for you outside.】
【Today’s KPI is met! I want the baby to dance as a wish!】
【Dancing isn’t enough, you have to wear a cat-girl maid outfit.】
…The comments drifted across his vision.
But Su Xi’s mind wasn’t on this. He blinked and stood up somewhat stiffly to walk toward the door. The rain outside didn’t seem to have stopped; the sound of rushing water filled his ears.
“Who is it?” he asked cautiously.
One second, two seconds, three seconds, no sound. He hesitantly pulled the door open, but before he could see the scene in front of him, he was startled awake.
“So annoying!” He grabbed the first thing he could reach and threw it toward the source of the noise.
The room fell into an eerie silence. After a moment of confusion, he realized it was the system talking to him. If so, the person he had just hit was… Su Xi rolled over to face the other way, pretending nothing had happened and intending to go back to sleep. But a faint aroma began to assault his taste buds; he couldn’t resist the temptation of good food.
Pretending he had just woken up, he lifted his eyes to look around, finally settling on the plastic bag on the table in front of Duan Cheng. A large logo was printed on the yellow bag. Su Xi subconsciously swallowed, getting up from the bed. His body felt very refreshed; Duan Cheng must have cleaned him up…
The next second, remembering something, he avoided the man’s gaze.
“If you’re awake, come here.” Duan Cheng acted as if he hadn’t noticed the boy’s shyness. He laid out the food containers and set a pair of chopsticks beside them. Inside were Su Xi’s favorites: sweet and sour pork ribs, stir-fried shrimp with bitter melon, and steamed egg custard, all radiating an inviting color.
Su Xi felt very touched by Duan Cheng’s thoughtfulness. He sat on the sofa and began to eat in small bites. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the man writing in a kraft paper notebook. He curiously wanted to lean over and look, but he restrained himself.
“System, check it for me. What is Duan Cheng writing?” He could only seek help from System 1368.
System 1368 had no physical form and possessed a “god’s-eye view.” Such a request was a small matter for it, so it responded quickly: “He wrote: ‘He looked beautiful sitting on the piano today. The fruit candy was very sweet. He was very well-behaved while eating beside me. However…'”
