- Chapter 60 - The Cultivator and the Siren
After settling in, Ye Zhixia, with Ruan Ning’s assistance, activated his invisibility. The trio then set off to investigate the mayor’s residence.
The mayor’s house was easy to spot, it was the largest estate in town.
Qinlin Town, situated by the sea, thrived on both agriculture and fishing. The mayor, Xu Yu, had originally been the wealthiest man in town. On a whim, he had purchased an official title and become the mayor.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning took the lead, with Baili Xin’er following closely behind.
As they scaled the courtyard wall, Ye Zhixia instinctively positioned himself protectively in front of Ruan Ning, gripping his treasured sword and remaining vigilant for any signs of danger.
Fortunately, the mayor’s residence had no defensive traps.
The three made their way to the inner courtyard, where they unexpectedly heard the muffled sobs of a woman.
Following the sound, they entered an open bedroom door. Despite their worldly experience, the sight before them was startling.
At the foot of the bed, a delicately dressed, frail woman wept into a handkerchief, flanked by two maids with worried expressions. At the head of the bed, a physician was inserting silver needles into a man lying motionless on the bed.
The man lay flat on the bed, his exposed skin covered in dense clusters of silver needles, resembling a porcupine.
“Divine Physician Sun, my husband’s hand really did twitch this morning. Please believe me, just a little more effort, and he’ll surely wake up,” the mayor’s wife pleaded tearfully.
One of the maids behind her chimed in, “There are many matters in town awaiting the mayor’s attention. Please, Divine Physician, show some mercy.”
Hearing this, Physician Sun merely shook his head. “I’ll administer a few more needles. If the mayor still doesn’t wake, then I must admit my incompetence.”
As Physician Sun inserted another needle, the mayor’s finger twitched slightly, only to fall still again.
The mayor’s wife sighed. “Let’s stop here for today. Tomorrow, please return to continue treating my husband. You’re the only one who’s gotten any reaction from him.”
Physician Sun accepted the request and began removing the needles from the mayor’s body.
Just as the last needle was withdrawn, the long-unconscious mayor suddenly trembled and spoke in a weak voice, “Divine Physician Sun… please don’t come back tomorrow.”
“Husband, you’re awake!” the mayor’s wife exclaimed. “Xiao Qing, reward the Divine Physician!”
The trio followed Physician Sun and the maids out of the room, catching fragments of the mayor’s wife’s tearful lamentations.
It turned out the mayor had collapsed in the wilderness and been brought back. Over the days, his wife had summoned numerous physicians to treat him, but only Physician Sun’s methods had shown any effect.
However, once the maid escorted Physician Sun out, she handed him a silver ingot and whispered, “Remember, you must keep it a secret that Madam ordered you to torment the mayor.”
Standing outside the courtyard, Ye Zhixia shuddered and whispered to Ruan Ning, “So the mayor was already awake, Physician Sun just paralyzed him by targeting his pressure points…”
Ruan Ning leaned closer and murmured, “The reason the mayor fell unconscious in the first place was because, when I was absorbing the demonic energy from the villagers in Danyun Village, I accidentally siphoned some from him too… No wonder I sensed traces of demonic energy not far outside the village…”
“He’s also a Heartless Corpse?” Ye Zhixia gasped. “But no, he still has life energy in him.”
Ruan Ning tugged at Ye Zhixia’s arm: “He’s not a Sui Xin Corpse, but there’s some demonic energy inside him, probably from frequent contact with evil cultivators. Once the demonic energy leaves his body, he can’t withstand it and passes out.”
Bai Li Xin’er, listening to their conversation from behind, rarely showed a smile: “That town chief is practically leaking air from all the needles.”
The three decided to return to the inn first.
–
According to the village chief of Danyun Village, every time they kidnapped newcomers into the village, they were sent directly to the Boundless Forest. Therefore, outside the village, there must be a temporary holding place for the victims.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning were in their room, discussing their plan to visit the town chief’s residence together that night.
Both tacitly avoided mentioning Bai Li Xin’er.
By now, they had long regarded each other as the closest of partners.
First, only when they were together could they maximize their abilities, and in daily life, they had grown accustomed to each other’s company.
“Sorry,” Ye Zhixia said with some self-reproach. “You came here to find your inner core, but I’ve dragged you into so many unrelated matters.”
Ruan Ning wasn’t entirely clear on human logic. She scratched her head: “It’s not entirely unrelated. Well, life is full of things that don’t directly serve your purpose.”
At this point, she suddenly smiled: “If it’s related to you, then it’s related.”
The phrasing was a bit convoluted, but Ye Zhixia understood what Ruan Ning meant.
Ruan Ning suddenly leaned close to Ye Zhixia’s face. Thinking she had something to say, Ye Zhixia tilted her ear toward Ruan Ning’s mouth.
But Ruan Ning’s lips veered forward and planted a kiss on Ye Zhixia’s cheek.
Ye Zhixia jerked her face back. She had always taken care of Ruan Ning, but she hadn’t noticed when Ruan Ning had developed such feelings for her.
“Your face is so soft and fragrant. I wanted to kiss it back in Danyun Village,” Ruan Ning said, her eyes crinkling with laughter after her successful sneak attack.
Ye Zhixia pulled Ruan Ning close and gently kissed her forehead before saying, “I have to kiss you back to make it even.”
–
Under the cover of a moonless night, the entire town was pitch black.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning once again arrived at the town chief’s residence.
After some searching, they discovered a hidden door concealed among the artificial rocks and grotesque boulders behind the house.
Glancing around to ensure no one was nearby, Ye Zhixia reached out to push the stone door open. But the moment she touched it, an electric shock surged from her palm through her entire body.
Ye Zhixia fainted.
Seeing this, Ruan Ning immediately moved to support her, but unexpectedly, a Celestial Capture Net from behind ensnared them both.
The town chief emerged slowly from a two-story building beside the inner courtyard, flanked by five or six cultivators.
Fanning himself with a folding fan, the town chief spoke arrogantly: “Two brats, daring to roam so brazenly in my residence! Throw them in the dungeon and send them to Danyun Village with the others in three days!”
Ruan Ning struggled a few times but failed to tear the Celestial Capture Net.
One of the cultivators beside the town chief sneered: “Save your energy. Do you really think you can break free from the Celestial Capture Net?”
The two were dragged into the dungeon beneath the artificial rocks.
A servant tossed the “unconscious” Ye Zhixia onto the ground, the impact against the concrete floor making her groan in pain.
Only after the servants left did Ruan Ning say to Ye Zhixia, “They’re gone. Get up.”
Ye Zhixia rose to her feet, grumbling, “That hurt so much. I envy you cultivators with your inner energy to protect you, no need to tough it out like this…”
The cell was dim and icy, with no windows or oil lamps. Ye Zhixia rubbed her eyes hard but still couldn’t make out the details of the cell.
Ruan Ning, being a sea demon, had excellent night vision. She watched in confusion as Ye Zhixia groped her way along the walls.
After a long pause, she finally asked, “What are you doing?”
Only then did Ye Zhixia turn toward the sound of Ruan Ning’s voice. “I can’t see anything.”
As if waking from a dream, Ruan Ning quickly gathered her demonic energy into her hand, forming a faint white glow.
Ye Zhixia looked around and finally saw the layout of the cell.
Three sides were ordinary walls, while the fourth was a wooden bar fence. In the center stood a wooden interrogation frame, still hung with shackles and leg irons.
“These walls are also enchanted to prevent anyone from escaping,” Ruan Ning explained to Ye Zhixia.
Noticing another cell across from them, Ye Zhixia asked, “Ningning, can you see who’s locked up over there?”
Ruan Ning glanced briefly before turning back. “It’s the mayor’s wife and those two maids.”
She then floated the glowing orb toward the opposite cell.
Squinting, Ye Zhixia recognized the three women they had seen in the mayor’s bedroom earlier that day.
The mayor’s wife lay slumped in a corner, her face swollen, eyes blackened, and hair disheveled. The other two women huddled nearby, their gazes vacant.
Ye Zhixia guessed that the mayor had likely discovered his wife’s petty schemes to torment him and retaliated by beating them before throwing them into the cell.
“Cough, cough…” Under the pale glow, the mayor’s wife looked deathly pale, coughing up two mouthfuls of blood.
Ruan Ning swiftly dispelled the enchantment on the bars while Ye Zhixia yanked open the iron chains. Together, they entered the cell holding the mayor’s wife.
Without exchanging a word, they moved in perfect sync, one supporting the mayor’s wife while the other used magic to heal her.
A gentle blue aura, carrying the essence of the ocean, flowed from Ruan Ning’s fingertips into the mayor’s wife.
The coughing gradually subsided, and color returned to the woman’s face, her pained expression easing slightly.
She opened her eyes and looked at the two before her, realizing they had saved her.
The two maids nearby also watched with gratitude in their eyes.
Suddenly, footsteps echoed from outside. Ruan Ning quickly cast an invisibility spell, cloaking both herself and Ye Zhixia.
Fortunately, the jailers were heading toward the mayor’s wife’s cell.
“Why is the door open?” one jailer exclaimed in surprise, holding an oil lamp.
But seeing the three women still lying in the corner, they didn’t pay it much mind.
“Must’ve forgotten to close it when we left,” another jailer offered as an excuse.
No one knew why these jailers had come, so they all stayed silent, watching intently.
The jailer at the back stepped forward, carrying a food box, and addressed the mayor’s wife. “Madam, the master is merciful. He wants you to eat your fill before sending you on your way.”
Ruan Ning immediately tensed, there was something alive inside that food box!
The jailer set the box down and disdainfully kicked open the lid. The stench of spoiled, rotting food instantly filled the cell. Upon closer inspection, the leftovers on the plate were crawling with maggots, and the bowl was filled with a foul mixture of slop.
Everyone present, including the jailers, covered their noses.
The jailer standing farthest away sneered, “Madam, since you’re used to delicacies, why not try some humble fare for a change?”
Another jailer chimed in, “Yeah, look, there’s vegetables, meat, and even soup. Plenty for a full meal.”
The three women were terrified, their hands propped on the ground as they scrambled backward.
Several jailers suddenly changed their expressions.
One of them roared, “Trying to hide? Not a chance!”
Another jailer sneered, “Sitting in the position of the town chief’s wife, yet foolish enough to plot against him. Old and faded, yet still refusing to behave, no wonder you were cast aside.”
“How about we brothers give you some proper attention?”
As soon as he finished speaking, he reached out to tear at the town chief’s wife’s clothes.
Ruan Ning was about to cast a spell to stop the jailers when Ye Zhixia beat her to it.
“Today, I’ll make sure you feel pain! Pain! Pain!”
Ye Zhixia pounded the jailer’s head while cursing.
Every strike landed on the back of his skull, and within a few hits, the jailer collapsed to the ground, blood foaming from his mouth.
Seeing Ye Zhixia’s formidable strength, the town chief’s wife immediately stood up, snatched the knife from the fallen jailer’s waist, and stabbed it straight into the others.
Ruan Ning didn’t hesitate either, blocking many attacks aimed at the town chief’s wife.
The wicked jailers lay dead in the room, but the three women showed no fear. Instead, they searched the bodies for keys and hurried to unlock the other cells.
The town chief’s wife stood up and politely thanked the two, even pleading, “If you ladies can help us escape Qinlin Town, I will reward you handsomely.”
Ruan Ning didn’t agree outright, only urging, “Just run for now!”
When the two maids tried to open the doors, they encountered a problem though the doors unlocked, the prisoners inside couldn’t get out.
One of the maids rushed back to report, “Madam! The cells are enchanted with barriers!”
Ruan Ning quickly volunteered, “Let me handle it.”
She stood in the prison corridor, pinched her middle finger with her index finger, and released energy upward. Deep blue demonic power surged through the ceiling and spread to the bars of every cell.
Crack! The sound of shattering barriers echoed throughout the prison.
Ye Zhixia shouted, “Everyone, follow us and escape!”
Guided by the glow of Ruan Ning’s demonic power, people poured out of every cell, following Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning toward the exit.
As they ran, Ye Zhixia said to Ruan Ning, “You lead them out. I’ll hold off the cultivators!”
Ruan Ning sharply refused, “You have no cultivation, I should be the one stopping them! You take the others and leave!”
Hearing their back-and-forth, the town chief’s wife quickly interjected, “There’s no need to argue. Both of you are skilled, you can work together to stop Xu Yu’s men. My maids and I know the routes well and can lead the escape more efficiently.”
“Agreed!” the two said in unison.
The stone door of the dungeon was blasted open, and under the town chief’s wife’s guidance, the captured youths fled swiftly toward the back gate.
Meanwhile, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning lay in wait in the backyard, ready to ambush the town chief and his lackey cultivators.
Hearing the commotion in the backyard, Town Chief Xu Yu indeed arrived with over a dozen of his cultivators to investigate. But by then, the backyard was already empty except for Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning, standing ready.
Two cultivators once again summoned the Immortal-Catching Net, intending to trap the two women.
But to their surprise, Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning split apart, flying in opposite directions. They swiftly grabbed two corners of the net and charged toward the throwers, ensnaring them in their own trap.
With a sharp tug on the ropes, the two cultivators were tightly bound in the net, unable to move.
Before Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning could even catch their breath, a spinning streak of white light shot toward them.
Ruan Ning steadied her inner energy, held her breath, and gathered her demonic power into her hands. Turning sideways, she deftly seized the weapon in one smooth motion.
When she took a closer look at the weapon now in her grasp, an involuntary surge of joy welled up in her heart.
