- Chapter 59 - The Cultivator and the Siren
After transforming into human form, the aura emanating from Yue Ji grew even more potent. At the boundary between the green grass and the dark magical plants, the demonic vegetation withered further.
The humanoid demonic plants hiding within were forced to retreat once more.
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning clasped their hands in salute to the beautiful Yue Ji.
“Greetings, miss. I am Ye Zhixia of the Qiyuan Sect, and this is Ruan Ning, a siren,” Ye Zhixia introduced.
The Yue Ji beauty nodded. “Understood.”
Both Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning were taken aback. Even Ruan Ning, who knew little of human customs, understood basic courtesy. Why did this Yue Ji beauty seem so aloof and unwilling to engage with them?
“May we ask for your name and origin, miss?” Ye Zhixia pressed.
“I…” The Yue Ji beauty frowned, as if struggling to recall. “I’ve forgotten.”
As she grew distressed, the green plants around her expanded slightly.
Ruan Ning immediately tensed. “No, miss! Your power is too overwhelming. Staying in the Forest of Ten Thousand Realms for too long will harm these demonic plants!”
Hearing this, the Yue Ji beauty glanced around and realized Ruan Ning spoke the truth.
“Fine, I’ll go with you,” she said, seemingly unconcerned about any threat Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning might pose.
A flicker of contemplation passed through Ye Zhixia’s calm eyes.
A whistle sounded, and the glazed cloud descended before the three of them.
Today, the glazed cloud was larger than usual, likely having adjusted its size to accommodate three passengers.
But when Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning stepped onto the cloud, the Yue Ji beauty made no move to follow. Instead, she said coldly, “Lead the way. I’ll follow you.”
Ye Zhixia obeyed, guiding the way ahead, while the Yue Ji beauty effortlessly took flight behind them, as if flying were an innate ability.
The three soared over the dark forest, heading south toward the village.
Along the way, Ruan Ning asked, “What do you plan to do with Danyun Village?”
Ye Zhixia licked her lips before answering, “The villagers of Danyun Village now exist outside the six realms. If they remain peaceful and refrain from harming others, we might spare them. But they’ve aided evil and committed many atrocities, they cannot be allowed to live.”
Ruan Ning nodded in agreement.
The Yue Ji beauty listened carefully from behind, analyzing their conversation while struggling to recall her own identity.
–
When they reached the outskirts of Danyun Village, the three descended to the ground.
The villagers, having spotted them, immediately revealed their true nature.
Every villager bared their fangs, eyeing the newcomers with hostility.
In an unnoticed corner, one villager sprinted toward the elder’s house to deliver the news.
Ye Zhixia gave them no chance to speak. She signaled Ruan Ning to extract the demonic energy from the villagers.
Ruan Ning raised her hands, fingers splayed and slightly curled. A wisp of black energy rose from the head of the fleeing villager, flying into Ruan Ning’s palm. The man collapsed instantly.
The others, horrified, turned and fled deeper into the village.
Ruan Ning had now recovered about 70-80% of her strength. She intensified her efforts to extract the demonic energy, and in an instant, the entire village was shrouded in darkness as vast amounts of demonic energy surged from every corner, ultimately converging into her hands.
Ye Zhixia reminded her, “Ningning, be careful. Leave the village chief alive, I have questions for him.”
Focused on absorbing the demonic energy, Ruan Ning merely gave Ye Zhixia a slight nod in response.
As the demonic energy was drawn out from their bodies, the villagers who had turned into mindless corpses collapsed one after another, their bodies gradually withering and shriveling until they resembled the corpses Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning had seen upon entering the village.
The entire village fell into silence, the scene looking utterly devastating.
These villagers had once been victims, but they had also become perpetrators. May they have another life in the next world, where they can start anew as good people.
The village chief had already heard the screams of the villagers and witnessed the demonic energy being extracted from everyone, including his own wife, drifting toward a single direction.
He understood that, like the others, he would not escape death today. So he chose to return to his study and await his end.
When Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning entered to find him, he exclaimed in surprise, “So it’s you two. To have survived the Ten Thousand Realms Forest, you must be no ordinary cultivators.”
Ye Zhixia frowned slightly in confusion, and Ruan Ning, noticing this, quickly leaned in to whisper, “The demonic energy in the Ten Thousand Realms Forest is too dense, it suppresses the spiritual power of ordinary cultivators.”
Ye Zhixia gave Ruan Ning a look of understanding before turning a cold gaze back to the village chief. “Which sect do those cultivators belong to? And how did they manage to abduct so many young people?”
The village chief sneered, then glared at them defiantly. “Kill me if you must. You won’t spare me anyway, I won’t say a word.”
“Ningning,” Ye Zhixia said, turning slightly to Ruan Ning, “extract half of the demonic energy from him, then pump it back in. Repeat the process a few times.”
Hearing this method, even Ruan Ning couldn’t help but smirk in amusement.
“You vicious witch!” the village chief spat through gritted teeth, his eyes blazing with fury.
Ye Zhixia merely scoffed in response, saying nothing further.
Following Ye Zhixia’s instructions, Ruan Ning extracted and re-injected the demonic energy into the village chief, repeating the cycle three or four times.
The villagers were not cultivators, and the demonic energy was a foreign substance to their bodies. The rapid extraction and re-injection caused excruciating pain. After just a few repetitions, the village chief had bitten his lips until they bled.
Seeing that Ruan Ning was also growing tired, Ye Zhixia called for a halt. She then stepped forward with her sword, leaning in close to the village chief. “I have many more methods to make you talk. Would you like to try them all?”
The village chief struggled internally for only a moment before surrendering.
“I’ll talk,” he said, his voice defeated.
Ye Zhixia glanced at Ruan Ning, and the two exchanged a nod.
Moon Season Beauty watched from the side, deep in thought.
The village chief, lost in memories, began recounting the past of Danyun Village.
It turned out that the villagers of Danyun Village had also relocated here after the great fire twenty years ago.
In those early years, the villagers were hardworking and capable. Since the village was near the sea, the men made their living by fishing, while the women stayed behind to tend the fields. Life had been prosperous and peaceful.
Five years ago, the black-robed cultivators arrived in the village, luring the villagers with promises of immortality in exchange for their cooperation.
The first to be swayed were the middle-aged and elderly villagers, all of whom feared death and were thus willing to collaborate with the black-robed cultivators.
Under this alliance, those in the village who opposed the scheme were swiftly “dealt with.”
Since they could even harm their own villagers, how could they have any mercy for outsiders?
The villagers, usually confined to the village, could only bring the kidnapped youths to the village entrance before sending them off to the Boundless Forest.
“I don’t know which sect those cultivators belong to, but I once heard someone address their leader as ‘Senior Brother Song.’ The one kidnapping outsiders is the town chief of Qinlin Town.”
These were the village chief’s final words.
He had long realized that Ye Zhixia had no spiritual power.
So he raised his hand and launched a hidden weapon, intending to perish together with her.
But Ye Zhixia’s body was agile, and with a slight sidestep, she dodged the ambush.
Seeing this, Ruan Ning’s anger flared, and she swiftly dealt with the village chief.
The three of them left the chief’s house. The Rose Beauty waved her sleeve, and the withered corpses in the village instantly turned into scattered specks of fluorescent light, dissipating into the world.
Everything returned to silence, as if the events in the village had never happened.
–
They hurried toward the Boundless Forest again, intending to return the reclaimed demonic energy to the demonic plants.
Along the way, the Rose Beauty suddenly spoke to the other two.
“My name is Baili Xin’er.”
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning were startled to hear the usually silent Rose Beauty speak.
“I am a rose from the Immortal Realm. Thousands of years ago, I descended to the mortal world to undergo tribulations. After two hundred years of mortal life, I ascended back to the Immortal Realm.”
Silence fell once more.
“And then?” Ye Zhixia couldn’t help but ask. “Why did you descend this time?”
Baili Xin’er’s voice remained emotionless. “To find someone. I came down to look for a person.”
“Who?” Ruan Ning leaned closer to Baili Xin’er.
A faint smile appeared on Baili Xin’er’s face. “A female cultivator. I want to guide her to immortality.”
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning seemed to understand something, both falling silent and exchanging a glance with pursed lips.
The three of them proceeded to the Boundless Forest, returned the demonic energy to the demonic plants, and instructed them to cultivate diligently. Then they headed in the direction beyond Danyun Village.
On the way, Ye Zhixia apologized, “I’m sorry for delaying your search for the inner core, Ningning.”
Ruan Ning replied nonchalantly, “As long as you’re by my side, my cultivation remains stable. We can take our time with the inner core. We need to deal with the town chief and the evil cultivators first.”
Ye Zhixia knew Ruan Ning was partly kind-hearted and partly accommodating her, so she sincerely said, “Thank you.”
Baili Xin’er, listening from behind, asked in confusion, “Are all mortal couples as polite as you two nowadays?”
Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning stopped in their tracks, staring blankly at Baili Xin’er.
Seeing her serious expression, with no hint of teasing, Ye Zhixia didn’t know how to respond. Ruan Ning simply smiled, her eyes curving. “Mutual respect and harmony, treating each other with courtesy.”
Hearing this, Ye Zhixia couldn’t help but feel secretly delighted. She bit her lower lip to keep from laughing.
The three continued forward until they reached the village entrance.
“Hmm?” Baili Xin’er looked toward the plaque and said in confusion, “There’s a barrier here.”
Ye Zhixia, lacking spiritual power, couldn’t detect the barrier and could only cast a pleading glance at Ruan Ning.
Ruan Ning hadn’t noticed it when entering the village earlier, but now, focusing her energy, she realized there was indeed a barrier.
Baili Xin’er casually walked out. “This is a low-level barrier, only capable of trapping low-level cultivators and demonic creatures.”
Ye Zhixia narrowed her eyes and stealthily reached her hand forward, only to encounter an invisible, solid wall.
Realizing she was the only one among the three without spiritual power, she felt a little embarrassed.
Ruan Ning watched Ye Zhixia’s actions, pinching her chin in thought.
Suddenly, she grabbed Ye Zhixia’s hand and pulled her toward the barrier.
Caught off guard, Ye Zhixia was dragged toward the barrier and instinctively turned her head away, closing her eyes.
But after several steps, she didn’t feel any obstruction.
“There, Xiaxia, we’re out,” Ruan Ning said, tilting her face up proudly. “I remembered that when we entered the village, we were holding hands. As long as we’re together, nothing can stop us.”
Ye Zhixia tightened her grip on Ruan Ning’s hand and nodded at her with a smile.
Bai Li Xin’er, standing ahead of them, coughed lightly. “Ahem.”
–
The three arrived at Qinlin Town and entered the inn where they had stayed before.
The waiter, spotting Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning, eagerly approached. “Hero and madam, have you finished your travels so soon?”
Ye Zhixia smiled in response. “No, no, we plan to stay a few more days. Could you please…”
She glanced at her money pouch, then at Ruan Ning and Bai Li Xin’er behind her, before turning back to the waiter. “Please arrange two guest rooms for us.”
The waiter flashed an “I understand” expression. “One room for the hero and madam, and another for the young lady. Please follow me.”
