- Chapter 53 - The Cultivator and the Sea Demon
Ye Zhixia recalled the original plot she had studied before coming here.
Her mission target was a kind-hearted sea demon who had been forced ashore after saving someone, only to be captured by the male lead, who was hunting far and wide.
But through sheer perseverance, she endured the heavenly lightning tribulations of the Xuantian Sect, underwent a complete transformation, and after a series of extraordinary encounters, became a demonic cultivator. She eventually became the greatest obstacle on the male lead’s path to immortality, the strongest antagonist in the original world.
There were many inexplicable aspects to this story.
First, how did a sea demon become a demonic cultivator?
Each race was determined by its origin, and when forming their core, they would develop different inner cores based on the path they cultivated.
For example, human cultivators could form golden cores or demonic cores, Buddhist cultivators formed relics, and demons formed demonic cores.
Logically, a sea demon, from birth, was destined to only form a demonic core so how did she later become a demonic cultivator?
Second, the male lead, Song Shiqi, progressed far too quickly.
Song Shiqi was the foremost immortal cultivator in this world, renowned not only for slaying demons and defending the righteous path but also for ascending to immortality just two hundred years after joining the Xuantian Sect.
When Ye Zhixia read this part of the plot, she immediately concluded that Song Shiqi had to be cheating.
Even in a world of immortal cultivation, there were basic rules. Even in the most spiritually abundant continent, no cultivator could ascend to immortality in just two hundred years.
Based on past experience, any cultivator who made such rapid progress must have resorted to unorthodox methods.
If the sea demon had already fallen into the male lead’s hands, and her current condition was unknown, rash action would be unwise. But if she hadn’t been captured yet, then rescuing her now and preventing her from becoming a demonic cultivator would be the best choice.
According to Bai Shi’s divination, the sea demon hadn’t been captured by Song Shiqi but had been accidentally saved by the Cloud Terrace Sage. That meant she definitely hadn’t turned into a demonic cultivator yet!
Though it was her first time riding the Glazed Rainbow Cloud, Ye Zhixia handled it with surprising ease.
The cloud soared above the forest as Ye Zhixia swayed slightly to maintain balance.
The Glazed Rainbow Cloud had long since developed sentience. Sensing that Ye Zhixia wouldn’t lose her balance, it picked up speed.
Soon, Ye Zhixia spotted a clearing ahead where a group of male cultivators from the Xuantian Sect surrounded a massive sea demon, weapons drawn.
The sea demon stood three meters tall, with wings that fluttered gracefully in the wind.
Her eyes were a deep, mesmerizing blue, and her ears were particularly striking, shaped like butterfly wings, shimmering with a crystalline glow.
The sea demon stood her ground against the cultivators.
The cultivators weren’t rushing to subdue her but circled her, occasionally striking with their magical artifacts.
The sea demon remained vigilant, but her breathing was labored, and her stamina was clearly waning.
Ye Zhixia found it odd. A sea demon’s demonic aura should have been overwhelming, yet this one’s seemed weaker than even the minor demons gathered inside the barrier earlier.
One of the Xuantian Sect cultivators shouted, “Surrender now, and you’ll suffer less!”
The sea demon clenched her teeth, refusing to answer, her gaze filled with hatred as she glared at these so-called righteous cultivators.
Suddenly, Ye Zhixia struck, sending one of the Xuantian Sect cultivators flying with a single palm strike. Then, with lightning speed, she launched attacks on the others.
Realizing the situation had turned, the Xuantian Sect cultivators quickly split into two groups, one continued their assault on the sea demon, while the other engaged Ye Zhixia in combat.
The sea demon suddenly felt a surge of demonic power within her, her body now a hundred times stronger than before.
Previously, she could only stand off against these cultivators, but now these small fry were no match for her.
With a single roar from the sea demon, the cultivators in front of her clutched their ears and collapsed in droves.
Over on Ye Zhixia’s side, relying on her exceptional martial skills, those who attacked her were also knocked to the ground, unable to get up.
Just as the two were about to flee, Song Shiqi arrived.
“Fiend! How dare you harm my junior brothers!” He landed in the center of the clearing, taking in the sight of the fallen Xuantian Sect disciples before his gaze settled on Ye Zhixia. “A worthless disciple of Qiyuan Sect, colluding with a demon! Today, I shall uphold justice and cleanse Qiyuan Sect of its filth!”
Ye Zhixia didn’t bother retorting. Instead, she quickly assessed the composition of Song Shiqi’s spiritual energy.
It was pure, with no trace of demonic cultivation.
Had she misjudged him?
But then, Song Shiqi also scrutinized the sea demon, his eyes flickering with disappointment before he sneered, “A sea demon without a demon core, still struggling in vain?”
With that, he lunged forward, unleashing his full power against the sea demon.
Ye Zhixia hurriedly moved to intercept him, but halfway there, she was immobilized by the sea demon’s demonic energy.
The next moment, the sea demon flicked her hand, and Song Shiqi was sent flying, crashing heavily against a tree at the edge of the clearing. When he hit the ground, he spat out a mouthful of blood.
Seizing the moment while the Xuantian Sect disciples were incapacitated, Ye Zhixia shouted at the sea demon, “Run!”
Without hesitation, the sea demon sprinted toward Ye Zhixia.
She could sense the aura of Qiyuan Sect on Ye Zhixia, and she knew that the people of Qiyuan Sect would not harm demons.
As she brushed past Ye Zhixia, the latter grabbed her wrist and pulled her onto the Glazed Rainbow Cloud.
The two of them fled together on the cloud.
The Glazed Rainbow Cloud carried them toward Qiyuan Sect.
“Let me down! I won’t go to Qiyuan Sect!” the sea demon bellowed.
Ye Zhixia frowned but spoke patiently, “Going back is the safest option right now. We can figure things out from there.”
“No! I refuse!” the sea demon shrieked, even pretending to leap off the cloud.
Ye Zhixia panicked and grabbed her wrist, pinning her down on the cloud. “Stop it, stop it!”
At a loss, Ye Zhixia finally asked, “Can you take human form? In your current state, you can’t go anywhere.”
The sea demon hesitated. “I’ll try.”
She interlaced her fingers, forming a seal, and transformed into a plain-looking woman.
The sea demon looked down at her light pink coarse linen robes, her eyes brimming with delight. “Is this better?”
Ye Zhixia nodded and directed the Glazed Rainbow Cloud to turn toward Lin’an City at the foot of the mountain.
–
The inner courtyard of the Phoenix Song Tavern doubled as an inn.
Ye Zhixia had built a rapport with them over the past few days and was practically a regular now.
“Oh, Little Ye, checking in so late? And who’s this…?” The drowsy attendant who came to greet them asked.
Ye Zhixia grinned, putting on an earnest expression. “This is my distant cousin. Staying at Qiyuan Sect isn’t convenient, so we’ll lodge here for a few days.”
The attendant glanced at the sea demon in her human form and complimented, “Little Ye’s cousin is quite the beauty too!”
He gave a thumbs-up and flashed the sea demon a sincere smile.
Then, mustering his energy, he warmly escorted the two to their room in the inn.
In the dead of night, the candlelight flickered in the quiet room, occasionally accompanied by the soft pop of moths diving into the flame.
The sea demon was still happily admiring her own attire.
Ye Zhixia spoke first, “My name is Ye Zhixia. What’s yours? The Qiyuan Sect has always protected your kind, why did you run away?”
Only then did the sea demon shift her attention to Ye Zhixia upon hearing her speak.
Ye Zhixia pressed on, “Or did you believe the nonsense about the sect leader wanting to eat you?”
“My name is Ruan Ning,” she replied solemnly. “I know the sect leader has been kind to us, but I’m different from the other demons in the barrier. I belong to the sea. I need to go home.”
The warm glow of the candlelight illuminated Ruan Ning’s face, making her expression appear especially earnest.
Gratitude tinged her voice as she continued, “When the sect leader brought me here, I was severely injured. She healed me. But ever since I came ashore, my demonic power has been weakening… If this continues, I’m afraid I’ll die on land.”
Ye Zhixia wasn’t surprised. After all, leaving one’s familiar environment would naturally lead to discomfort. If she were to enter the sea, her movements would surely be restricted too.
At this moment, Ruan Ning hadn’t yet been tormented by the male lead, nor had she succumbed to demonic corruption. Her expression was innocent and pure.
Hearing her reasoning, Ye Zhixia found it entirely reasonable and couldn’t understand why Yun Tai Zhenren had confined her within the barrier instead of releasing her back into the sea.
The ocean was vast and boundless—surely, a sea demon would be safer there.
Ye Zhixia made her decision. “Alright, I’ll take you back.”
“But… can you even manage that?” Ruan Ning questioned skeptically. “You don’t have any spiritual power. What if we’re chased by those cultivators in blue robes again? I’d end up having to protect you.”
In the world of cultivation, strength was paramount, and spiritual power was an indispensable symbol of status and capability.
Simply telling someone that her martial prowess was unmatched wouldn’t convince anyone.
Frustrated, Ye Zhixia sat down on a stool in the room, racking her brain for a way to explain herself when Ruan Ning suddenly spoke again.
“But it’s so strange tonight, my demonic power suddenly surged,” Ruan Ning murmured to herself. “Normally, when I try to shapeshift into other minor demons, something always goes wrong. But today, I managed a complete human form without any flaws.”
Then, a puzzled look crossed her face. “Did the Zhenren really allow you to leave the sect? You’re so weak, isn’t it dangerous?”
Ye Zhixia scratched her head in agitation. How could she prove she wasn’t weak? She couldn’t just beat Ruan Ning up like she had with those fools from the Xuantian Sect.
Ruan Ning, meanwhile, was still basking in the joy of her restored demonic power.
“Wait a moment, let me try something,” she said to Ye Zhixia.
She then attempted to delve into her own consciousness to gauge just how much of her power had returned.
Ye Zhixia sat patiently on the stool, pondering how to demonstrate her strength, when suddenly, she heard an astonished gasp.
She looked up to see Ruan Ning, now as delighted as a child. “What’s wrong?”
Ruan Ning was practically vibrating with excitement. “My consciousness, it’s nearly seventy percent restored! Before, inside the barrier, it had shrunk to less than ten percent!”
Hearing this, Ye Zhixia immediately sensed something amiss.
While environmental discomfort could suppress one’s cultivation, having one’s consciousness shrink to less than ten percent was far too severe.
Yun Tai Zhenren wouldn’t deliberately suppress Ruan Ning’s demonic power and the fact that it had now recovered proved as much. So what exactly had been limiting Ruan Ning’s power?
Ye Zhixia was deep in thought when she suddenly heard a commotion outside the window.
The two of them peered out and saw Song Shiqi leading hundreds of robed cultivators from the Xuantian Sect, marching in a grand procession toward the inn.
Ruan Ning’s face darkened instantly. “They’re not good people. That group today said they wanted to use my skin to make armor!”
Hearing this, Ye Zhixia was both shocked and furious, the moral compass of the Xuantian Sect’s disciples was truly appalling.
“I’m going to kill them,” Ruan Ning muttered, her eyes blazing with fury.
Ye Zhixia closed the window and turned to Ruan Ning, speaking softly to persuade her. “There are many civilians in the city. Fighting them here would surely harm innocent people. Let’s leave for now and teach them a lesson another day, alright?”
Ruan Ning thought of the enthusiastic waiter from earlier and felt a pang of reluctance. With no other choice, she packed their belongings, and the two of them rode away on a glimmering rainbow cloud from the back of the inn.
Just as Song Shiqi was about to search the inn, he suddenly bellowed, “They’ve fled through the back door! I’ll chase them first, follow the markers I leave behind!”
With that, he dashed off using qinggong, pursuing the direction in which Ye Zhixia and Ruan Ning had disappeared.
