- Chapter 12 - The Alluring Movie Queen and the Gloomy Heiress
“Chen Yufen! How long are you going to keep pretending?” Old Master Chu’s eyebrows shot up as he bellowed.
Seeing the situation, Chu Tianheng instinctively reached out to shield Chen Yufen behind him.
Old Master Chu took note of this and glared at Tianheng. “Step aside!”
Over the years, Old Master Chu had rarely involved himself in family affairs, always appearing as a kindly old man at home. Chen Yufen had never seen him this furious before.
Clutching Tianheng’s arm, she hid behind him, too afraid to show her face.
Tianheng pleaded on her behalf, his expression desperate. “Dad, it really wasn’t Yufen. She’s always been timid, it’s always Ningning who bullied her…”
Old Master Chu knew Tianheng and Chu Ning had never been close, but with Ningning’s life in danger, he was still protecting the obvious culprit. It was a deep disappointment.
Ignoring Tianheng’s words, Old Master Chu turned his sharp gaze on Chen Yufen. “Aunt Wang used to work with you as a nurse at the hospital. After you married into the Chu family, you brought her here, didn’t you?”
Chen Yufen froze was this all it was about?
“Master Chu, it’s true I brought Aunt Wang here, but I never imagined she’d do something like this,” she defended herself frantically.
Old Master Chu scoffed, his lips curling into a mocking smile. He turned to Aunt Wang. “You have two sons attending a prestigious private school, don’t you?”
Aunt Wang suddenly threw herself at Old Master Chu’s feet, wailing loudly. “Master Chu! I’ll talk! I’ll tell you everything! Please don’t hurt my sons!”
Old Master Chu, who had planned to unravel the truth layer by layer, was taken aback.
Having navigated both political and business circles with caution, he would never involve himself in illegal activities.
Aunt Wang’s reaction could only mean one thing, whoever had ordered her had threatened her sons’ lives.
Old Master Chu spoke calmly. “Tell me. I guarantee your family’s safety.”
With his assurance, Aunt Wang immediately pointed at Chen Yufen. “She told me I had to drug the second young miss this morning!”
Chen Yufen shrieked in panic. “How dare you slander me like this!”
Aunt Wang knelt on the ground, begging pitifully. “Master Chu! Please spare me, spare my children!”
Old Master Chu ignored her pleas and instead ordered the security personnel behind him. “Take her to the police station. Let the authorities handle this.”
Chen Yufen was consumed with indignation. “It wasn’t me! It really wasn’t! Husband, say something!”
The entire room fell silent, Chen Yufen’s desperate protests echoing through the bright first-floor hall.
Yet the looks everyone gave her were filled with disgust and contempt.
She had been nothing but a hospital nurse. If not for taking good care of Old Master Chu, how could she have ever stepped foot into the Chu family?
Old Master Chu sighed deeply before reprimanding her sternly. “Back then, I saw that you were good at caring for others, so I introduced you to Tianheng, hoping you’d help him raise his two children. And yet, you dared to harm my Ningning? Take a good look at yourself, who do you think you are?”
“Someone take her to the police station as well!” Old Master Chu commanded.
Chen Yufen clung to Tianheng’s sleeve, refusing to let go. “Husband! I’m innocent! It wasn’t me! I didn’t—”
But Tianheng could only pull his sleeve free, his face grim as he turned away, allowing the security personnel to drag Chen Yufen off.
Old Master Chu continued to ask, “Who planted this bug?”
This time, no one spoke up, because the household servants truly wouldn’t dare to do such a thing. Drugging someone was one thing once consumed, the evidence was gone. But a bug left in place would be a constant source of anxiety. If a servant had done it, their nerves of steel would be truly remarkable.
Seeing that no one answered not even a single person stepped forward to accuse anyone Old Master Chu, considering the gravity of the situation, instructed the security personnel to seal off the evidence and the room, waiting for the police to collect it. This could potentially involve the theft of commercial secrets.
Once the search was completed, everyone returned to their posts, leaving only Old Master Chu and Chu Tianheng in the living room.
Old Master Chu still held considerable regard for this son-in-law of over a decade. But even heroes falter at the beauty’s pass, anyone could see that his feelings for his second wife ran deep.
Old Master Chu expected him to plead for Chen Yufen’s sake and was already prepared to give him a stern lecture.
To his surprise, Chu Tianheng brought up someone else entirely.
“Chu Xiao has done an excellent job managing Tianxing Entertainment under the group all these years. That child has always been so sensible…”
Old Master Chu weighed the situation in his mind. If Chu Xiao was innocent, there was no reason to suddenly remove him from his position. If Chu Xiao was involved, then Tianxing Entertainment would likely already be filled with his people.
He replied unhurriedly, “This is a society governed by law. The Chu family certainly won’t resort to collective punishment. Family scandals shouldn’t be aired in public, to the outside world, Chu Xiao remains my adopted son.”
Hearing Old Master Chu’s firm response, Chu Tianheng let out a long sigh of relief.
Old Master Chu patted him on the shoulder. “Tianheng, I know you’re a man of deep emotions, but everyone must take responsibility for their own actions.”
“I’ll go rest in my room now. You should take some time to collect yourself.”
With that, he turned and stepped into the elevator, leaving Chu Tianheng standing there, lost in thought.

After completing her discharge procedures, Ye Zhixia hurried to the market to buy some meat and vegetables before rushing home to cook.
Before dinner time, she returned to the hospital with the freshly prepared meals in hand.
As she approached Chu Ning’s hospital room, she happened to run into a staff member from the hospital cafeteria who was explaining meal-ordering procedures to newly admitted patients.
Holding up her food containers, Ye Zhixia gave the staff member a knowing smile.
The staff member immediately understood and returned the smile before moving on to the next room.
The bodyguards at the door also recognized Ye Zhixia as the woman who had shared a room with Chu Ning, saved her that morning, and had spoken warmly with Old Master Chu. They didn’t stop her.
“Ningning, look what I’ve got~” Ye Zhixia’s voice was bright with cheer.
Chu Ning, who had been lost in thought while gazing out the window, turned her head and saw Ye Zhixia, her hair tied in a high ponytail, dressed in casual clothes.
“Xiaxia-jie? You’re back?” Chu Ning asked, puzzled.
Ye Zhixia immediately shook her head. “I’ve been discharged, but I was worried you wouldn’t like the hospital food, so I made some dishes especially for you.”
As she spoke, she set up the small table attached to the hospital bed for Chu Ning.
The food in the insulated containers was still warm tomato scrambled eggs, fish-fragrant shredded pork, and lotus root and pork rib soup. All were light yet nutritious, perfect for a patient’s recovery.
Watching Ye Zhixia bustling about after all her efforts, Chu Ning felt a sweet warmth in her heart.
Growing up in the Chu household, meals had always been prepared by servants. Her grandfather was perpetually busy and naturally never cooked for her. Though Chu Yunshu was also occupied, she would occasionally make simple dishes for Chu Ning, who always savored them with delight.
As for Chu Tianheng, Grandpa always said it was tough for him to raise Chu Ning and Chu Hui alone. But he didn’t have to cook, clean, or even take care of the kids each of them had two or three nannies. So where exactly was the hardship?
Thinking of the detestable man, Chu Ning’s expression darkened slightly.
Ye Zhixia didn’t notice the change in Chu Ning’s face because she was busy rummaging through her backpack.
She pulled out an elegant black pearl-finish hair ribbon, then walked to Chu Ning’s bedside with a satisfied smile. Gathering Chu Ning’s voluminous, slightly curly hair behind her, she gently tied it into a pretty bow.
Chu Ning felt Ye Zhixia’s movements and knew she was doing this to make eating easier for her. Warmth welled up in her heart once again.
Ye Zhixia had saved Chu Ning twice this time, she had even risked her life to pull her back from the brink of death during the car accident.
Recalling the despair of being trapped and immobile during the crash, and the overwhelming relief when she saw Ye Zhixia, Chu Ning had already placed her within the circle of her trust, right alongside Grandpa and Aunt Li Xia.
Softly, she murmured, “Thank you, Xiaxia-jie.”
Then she lowered her head and began eating in small, delicate bites.
Ye Zhixia pulled up a stool and sat beside her, watching Chu Ning eat with gentle eyes.
The room was quiet. Having wandered alone through a hundred worlds, Ye Zhixia felt an unfamiliar sense of warmth for the first time.
The setting sun cast its glow over the girl’s hair, draping her in a golden veil. Paired with her delicate skin and striking features, she looked like a painting from the medieval era.
A long while passed like this, until the food was nearly gone.
A stray lock of hair slipped from Chu Ning’s temple and brushed against her cheek. Quick as lightning, Ye Zhixia reached out and tucked it behind her ear.
Ye Zhixia was tall, and her hands were larger than those of most girls. Every joint of her slender fingers seemed exquisitely sculpted, almost unnaturally beautiful.
The cool touch of her fingertips brushed against the skin behind Chu Ning’s ear, and in that instant, Chu Ning’s heart skipped a beat. A strange sensation sprouted within her, and her cheeks and ears grew warm.
A few seconds later, Ye Zhixia noticed the blush creeping up Chu Ning’s ears and cheeks and grew concerned.
“Ningning, are you feeling unwell?”
Without waiting for an answer, she pressed the back of her hand against Chu Ning’s forehead, then against her own, murmuring, “No fever…”
But this only made Chu Ning’s face burn even redder.
Frowning, Ye Zhixia hastily said, “Wait here for a second.”
She hurried to the nurse’s station to grab a mercury thermometer, then returned and handed it to Chu Ning. “Here, check your temperature. We need to make sure your surgical wound isn’t infected.”
Silently, Chu Ning took the thermometer and placed it under her arm, keeping her head lowered as she stared at her blanket.
While waiting, Ye Zhixia busied herself clearing the meal tray and folding the table, wondering to herself: Why is she so quiet today? Is she still shaken from the accident, or did someone upset her again?
Even after the temperature check, Chu Ning remained silent.
The thermometer read: 37.2°C.
“Normal. That’s a relief,” Ye Zhixia muttered to herself before reminding Chu Ning, “If you feel unwell at all, tell the doctor or nurse immediately.”
Chu Ning gazed at her with dewy eyes and nodded obediently, reaching out to take the thermometer back.
Ye Zhixia had brought her a thermometer, and she wanted to keep it as a memento.
But Ye Zhixia took the thermometer and returned it directly to the nurse. In previous missions, she had worked as both a doctor and a nurse. The thermometer contained mercury, and losing one meant searching the entire department and wards, she understood all too well the hardships of medical staff.
When she returned to the ward, Ye Zhixia wanted to say something to Chu Ning, but she noticed the lingering flush on Chu Ning’s face and the slight unease in her eyes.
Just as she was about to ask further, her phone suddenly rang, it was a call from her agent, Chen Chen.
She softly said to Chu Ning, “My agent is calling.”
Then she answered the phone.
“What? Delayed filming?” Ye Zhixia exclaimed in surprise. “What’s going on?”
