- Chapter 11 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
Old Master Chu turned and ordered his entourage to leave. The muscular man in sunglasses hesitated for a moment.
Ye Zhixia, observing this, smiled and said, “There are only two patients in this room. Are you really afraid a weak woman like me would harm your boss?”
Eventually, the others reluctantly exited the room, though a few glared fiercely back at Ye Zhixia before stepping out.
“Close the door on your way out, thanks!” Ye Zhixia called loudly, completely unfazed.
The room fell silent. Earlier, surrounded by his people, Old Master Chu had exuded an imposing presence. But now, left alone with his granddaughter, he clutched her hand, overwhelmed with grief.
The atmosphere instantly turned somber.
His voice choked with emotion, he asked, “Ningning, what exactly happened today? Tell Grandpa everything.”
Chu Ning stammered, unable to form a coherent sentence.
Alarmed, Old Master Chu looked up at Ye Zhixia in panic. “What’s wrong with Ningning? What’s happening?”
Ye Zhixia guessed he feared Chu Ning had suffered brain damage, leaving her only able to babble incoherently. She quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry. The anesthesia hasn’t worn off yet. She injured her leg and just had surgery. The doctor will come by soon to discuss her condition with you.”
Old Master Chu’s expression eased slightly at her words.
He let out a long sigh before asking Ye Zhixia, “Young lady, was it you who saved Ningning?”
Ye Zhixia lived by the principle that good deeds should never go uncredited.
She nodded eagerly. “Yes, it was me. I remember a lot of details about what happened in the car. Would you like to hear them?”
Old Master Chu immediately grew alert. “Tell me everything about what happened in that car!”
Ye Zhixia stepped closer and launched into a vivid, embellished account, how Chu Ning had seemed drugged and disoriented, how the driver had deliberately locked the doors before smashing the window and fleeing, and how he had even broken Chu Ning’s leg in the process.
She didn’t forget to show off her own scrapes and bruises for good measure.
Earlier that morning, while on a flight, Old Master Chu’s assistant had briefed him about the recent uproar on Weibo.
He had immediately concluded that someone was targeting his granddaughter in his absence from Haicheng and vowed to get to the bottom of it upon his return.
But he hadn’t expected the perpetrators to be so ruthless, striking repeatedly this time nearly costing his granddaughter her life.
The thought made his blood boil with fury.
Seizing the moment, Ye Zhixia pressed on, “Sir, if I may say so, your granddaughter’s living conditions are far from safe. That Weibo incident earlier? I doubt it was an accident either.”
Old Master Chu eyed her skeptically. “You’re saying the Weibo matter…”
Ye Zhixia smugly crossed her legs on her bed, picked up an apple from the nightstand, and took a bite. “Funny enough, I was the one who saved Ningning that time too.”
Old Master Chu’s expression turned grave. “You just happened to be there both times?”
His tone of suspicion irked her. “Are you doubting me? Think carefully, sir if it weren’t for me today, you’d be piecing your granddaughter back together before you could even hold her and cry.”
She wasn’t exaggerating. The explosion had been powerful enough to tear a person apart.
Just then, the orthopedic surgeon who had operated on Chu Ning arrived for rounds and ran into Old Master Chu.
Though aware of the old man’s prominent status in Haicheng, the doctor remained composed and professional as he explained Chu Ning’s condition.
Before leaving, the doctor said to Ye Zhixia, “All your test results are in, and there’s nothing seriously wrong with you. Go through the discharge procedures this afternoon and make room for those who really need it.”
Ye Zhixia straightened up, hands at her sides, bowing and nodding in agreement as if she were a sinner who had delayed the doctor’s work.
Old Man Chu was deep in thought. Setting aside the hotel incident from before, at the very least, the recent drugging of Chu Ning and the driver’s escape indicated serious internal problems within the Chu family.
He was immensely grateful to Ye Zhixia for saving Chu Ning twice and, having learned from the doctor that Chu Ning was fine, his attitude softened considerably.
“Ningning will be discharged and returning home. Miss Ye, if it’s convenient, would you like to join us for a meal at the Chu residence?”
Ye Zhixia initially wanted to accept, getting closer to the Chu family would naturally be beneficial for her.
But she could only decline regretfully: “I’ll be starting filming next week, so I probably won’t have time to visit the Chu residence.”
With that, she walked around the hospital bed, slinging an arm over Old Man Chu’s shoulder as if they were old friends: “Since I won’t be around, I’m entrusting Ningning to your protection. Make sure she doesn’t face any more danger.”
Old Man Chu didn’t find anything odd about it and simply sighed. “Ningning’s safety is my responsibility from now on!”
Ye Zhixia patted his shoulder and instructed, “Then I’ll go handle my own discharge procedures. You should talk to Ningning later and see if there are any missing details.”
Only after Ye Zhixia had packed up and left did Old Man Chu realize this Ye Zhixia, where were her manners? Who did she think she was, acting so familiar?
–
After Chu Ning regained consciousness, Old Man Chu questioned her about her morning activities.
After breakfast, Chu Ning had gotten into her car to head to the airport. She insisted she must have been drugged, the sensation was unmistakable. Though she was still conscious, she couldn’t muster any strength to react during the emergency.
Comparing Chu Ning’s and Ye Zhixia’s accounts, the sequence of events became clear.
It was then that Chu Tianheng finally arrived, fashionably late.
He looked at his injured daughter with apparent concern.
But the first thing he said was, “This child, something always happens when you step out. You’ve given your elders so much worry.”
Chu Ning grabbed a cup from the bedside table and hurled it at Chu Tianheng, shouting furiously, “Get out!”
In the past, Chu Tianheng had often used such flattery to win Old Man Chu’s favor. But now, lying in the hospital bed was Old Man Chu’s most treasured grandchild.
For the first time, Old Man Chu felt displeased with Chu Tianheng’s words and even began to suspect him.
Old Man Chu first increased security at the hospital. Then he called his subordinates to report the incident to the police and ordered a full-scale search for the escaped driver. Finally, he led a team of security personnel in a grand procession back to the Chu family estate.
The security team first blocked all exits.
Then Old Man Chu entered the house with the search team.
Chen Yufen, upon seeing Old Man Chu, immediately put on a fawning smile and approached. “You’re back, sir?”
She clearly knew about Chu Ning’s hospitalization but pretended ignorance, greeting Old Man Chu with obsequious charm.
“Everyone, gather in the living room! No one leaves!” Old Man Chu’s command brooked no disobedience. All the servants quickly assembled from every corner of the house.
He waved his hand behind him, and the inspection team immediately put on gloves, filing in one after another to conduct a thorough search of every corner of the Chu family estate.
Chen Yufen had been married into the family for three years. With the old master Chu preoccupied with corporate affairs, Chu Ning living in her own apartment, and Chu Hui still young, she had taken charge of all household matters, big and small giving her the illusion of being the lady of the house.
“Old Master, what is the meaning of this?” Chen Yufen cried out in alarm. She had never witnessed such a scene, akin to a raid.
Chu Tianheng quickly stepped forward and covered Chen Yufen’s mouth.
How could the old master Chu bother with her? Though he had entrusted the household to her care, she and the son she brought along had enjoyed no shortage of the Chu family’s resources. As long as the household ran smoothly, the old master had turned a blind eye to how much she skimmed off for her private coffers after all, it was just petty cash.
But now that Chu Ning had been harmed, how could she possibly be innocent?
The investigation revealed shocking truths that even startled the old master!
Besides finding sleeping pills in the servants’ quarters, listening devices had been planted in his bedroom and study.
The old master’s face turned pale with fury. Forget corporate secrets, had he not always conducted himself with integrity, these private recordings could have become leverage in the wrong hands.
“Whose are these?” the old master demanded, holding up the sleeping pills.
The crowd remained silent.
His voice turned icy. “If you won’t speak clearly here, you’ll do so at the police station. They have ways of making you tell the truth!”
At this, Zeng Sao, who had worked for the Chu family for over a decade, spoke up: “I’ve seen Wang Sao with that bottle before!”
Wang Sao’s face darkened. “Sister Zeng, don’t you dare slander me!”
But Shi the cook chimed in, “That’s right. I’ve seen Wang Sao sneaking around hiding something. I peeked, it was this exact bottle!”
Wang Sao had only been with the family for less than two years, with light duties, mainly preparing separate nutritional meals for Chu Xiao, Chu Ning, and Chu Hui.
The old master’s eyes burned with venom, as if he could tear Wang Sao apart. He grabbed her by the collar. “Speak! Who told you to drug them today?”
Chen Yufen turned her head away, afraid Wang Sao might make eye contact with her.
But Wang Sao had her own vulnerabilities. Kneeling on the ground, she sobbed and insisted it was her own idea: “The second young lady always orders me around. I just wanted to give her some sleeping pills so she’d sleep longer, and I could rest.”
Having spent decades navigating the political and business world, the old master scoffed at her excuse. “How loyal of you. Did you think the Chu family hires people without background checks?”
Wang Sao jerked her head up, staring at the old master in terror.
