Chapter 9: Brought People Home Before the Divorce?
It was quite clear that the residential area where Big Wen and Little Wen lived, while appearing to have strict security, was actually without principle or bottom line. Wei Yuzhi’s driver merely rolled down the window and spoke a few words to the guard, and the silver sedan was readily waved through. The whole process was so casual and easy that Wen Zhiyi began to worry about the security risks of living there.
“Alright, I can walk the rest of the way myself.” Having just angrily confronted Wei Yuzhi in the private room, Wen Zhiyi cleared his throat uncomfortably and demanded in a feigned authoritative tone, “The day after tomorrow—don’t forget to bring the household register again. See you at the Civil Affairs Bureau at 2:00 PM.”
Wei Yuzhi looked out the window as if he hadn’t heard. The dappled light and shadow of the rustling trees outlined stark, solitary lines on his profile. He seemed initially unwilling to respond, but then, as if remembering something, he turned to face Wen Zhiyi, who was unbuckling his seatbelt.
“Won’t you invite me up to sit?” He had already put on the specialized Inhibitor Patch sent by He Xin. His scent gland, having just experienced a pheromone burst, was now silent again. Looking at Wen Zhiyi, who was covered in the scent of brandy pheromones, he felt a long-lost, peculiar sense of satisfaction and reassurance.
But he knew this was only an insignificant, brief reunion before a complete rupture.
Wen Zhiyi was completely oblivious to the concentration of pheromones on him, which was enough to suffocate a crowd of AOs. He was slightly surprised by Wei Yuzhi’s request and, after a moment of hesitation, refused: “There’s no need. Our place is small. There’s no room for you to sit.”
He Xin’s young, capable Beta secretary had been very thoughtful when delivering the specialized patch and change of clothes, asking if she should also prepare a set for CEO Wei’s partner. He Xin dismissed the idea with a raised eyebrow, patting her on the shoulder and indicating that some matters didn’t need too much attention.
Are you kidding? CEO Wei and that Beta have been married for two whole years, and even he, the special assistant, has only seen the latter less than five times. A new secretary rushing to send clothes to Wen Zhiyi would definitely flip the boss’s jealousy switch.
After all, that’s how the previous secretary left.
The young secretary sensed the tense, stagnant atmosphere in the car and suddenly had a flash of inspiration, understanding the intent behind her boss’s frown and sneer. She turned around from the front seat, smiled at Wen Zhiyi, and clapped her hands together:
“Mr. Wen, I got some of CEO Wei’s pheromones on me while dealing with the pheromone leak in the private room at Shanquan Residence. Could I borrow a place to take care of it? You see, it’s not convenient for me to go back to the company covered in this scent. Please, I beg you.”
If she was going upstairs to deal with pheromones, there was absolutely no reason for her boss to wait downstairs.
Wen Zhiyi sighed helplessly, giving the secretary an exasperated look, but ultimately agreed to let her and Wei Yuzhi come up.
The three stood in the cramped elevator car. The $1.9$-meter Wei Yuzhi occupied virtually all the primary space. Although the secretary beside him was also tall and well-mannered, the crushing force of his aura and height made her look like a slender sapling beside a mountain.
Wen Zhiyi stood in front of them, too lazy to turn around. His gaze was fixed straight ahead on the elevator door. Although his net height of $1.79$ meters was significantly shorter than Wei Yuzhi’s, wearing shoes was enough to reach the $1.8$-meter threshold.
The young secretary looked at Wen Zhiyi in front, then at her boss beside her, forcefully suppressing the strong urge to pull out her phone and call He Xin for comfort.
Amidst the secretary’s silent pleas for guidance, the elevator finally reached the seventh floor. With a crisp ding-dong notification, the car doors slowly slid open.
Wen Zhiyi blinked in confusion.
He saw his violently punching ex-boyfriend and his bruised, swollen ex-ex-boyfriend.
Then came the female Alpha who cried out and desperately rushed forward to hold her crazed boss. She looked frantically towards the slowly opening elevator door for help, only to despairingly realize that the three people in the elevator didn’t make up a single Alpha.
A brutal, solid punch landed heavily on Gu Yansheng’s face, making a dull thud as knuckles and flesh met cheekbone. Gu Yansheng was slammed backward by the solid blow, staggering a few steps until he stumbled to a stop right in front of Wen Zhiyi.
The teeth-grinding sound of the punch should have made Wen Zhiyi frown at the violent impact Gu Yansheng had taken, but when the now-upright Gu Yansheng cast a trembling, fragile, yet encompassing look at him, the young Beta, instinctively about to offer support, abruptly stopped all movement. He paused, his expression suddenly becoming calm and indifferent.
He realized that this Beta was trying to manipulate his emotions again—pity, discomfort, softening… Gu Yansheng was skilled at eliciting these gentle emotions from him, something he’d done since childhood.
Gu Yansheng, who took two punches from an S-class Alpha without dodging, clearly felt his molar teeth loosen. The burning, smoking heat of the pain surged like fire on oil, and his instantly swollen face made him look completely disadvantaged.
No matter how Chen Que had abused his body with drugs in the past few years, an Alpha of his grade was already at the peak of human physical limits. Just a few casual punches were enough to leave an ordinary Beta lying in agony for several weeks.
Looking at Wen Zhiyi, who was expressionless and detached the whole time, the gentle and elegant emotion in Gu Yansheng’s eyes slowly vanished. His handsome, profound face gradually became dark. He painfully swallowed a few mouthfuls of bloody froth and managed a calm smile at Wen Zhiyi: “Doesn’t Zhizhi feel sorry for me at all?”
Wen Zhiyi let out a sound of disgust, as if seeing a ghost. Before he could react, he heard the other person say in a familiar, light-hearted tone: “If Zhizhi doesn’t care at all, then I got hit for nothing.”
The next second, Gu Yansheng suddenly lunged at Chen Que with a vastly different, forceful stance!
Ning Meng, who took a kick meant for her boss, screamed out loud. How can this Beta be fiercer than me, an A-class Alpha! Driven by the desire to perform well in front of her boss, she righteously shielded Chen Que. Even though she instinctively felt a strong sense of danger, she still didn’t take Gu Yansheng, a Beta, seriously.
It wasn’t until Gu Yansheng instantly took her down with a cold, clean flying kick that Ning Meng realized the seemingly elegant and gentle Beta was using extremely professional combat techniques.
This was the scenario Wen Zhiyi had anticipated.
Due to his family background, Gu Yansheng, who was raised as an heir by the Gu family’s eldest uncle, had received various self-defense training since childhood. Although he appeared composed and proper, he had actually beaten up all the children around him.
Wen Zhiyi had always been good-looking. After school in elementary and middle school, he was often cornered in the alley by mischievous kids who wouldn’t let him go home unless Little Wen gave each of them a kiss. At that time, Little Wen was introverted but fiercely stubborn. He would rather stand hungry in the alley until dark than submit, staring fixedly at the Alphas surrounding him with his clear, almond-shaped eyes.
Wen Zhijie was anxious to go out and find his younger brother but was forcibly kept in his room by his parents and ordered to study. Strangely, although Wen Zhiyi was stubborn, he never caused trouble growing up, yet his parents insisted he was just playing wildly outside and would return when he got hungry.
Finally, it was Gu Yansheng who found Wen Zhiyi amidst the buzzing cicadas of a summer evening. He slapped and severely beat the flippant, mischievous delinquents one by one in front of Little Wen, then carried Little Wen on his back and took him home.
Those Alphas were all children of the Gu and Wen families’ colleagues. They went home and complained to their parents that they were just joking with the Wen family’s youngest son, but Gu Yansheng’s blows were so ruthless that everyone was bruised and fractured, lying at home for about a month. Gu Yansheng was naturally disciplined by his eldest uncle afterward.
Gu Yansheng, of course, did not regret it. But even after all these years, he still remembered Wen Zhiyi quietly asking him on his back why his parents hadn’t come looking for him.
Gu Yansheng remembered Wen Zhiyi solemnly saying that he would care about and feel sorry for all the injuries he sustained.
But the Zhizhi who once stroked his swollen lips and said those words was now watching impassively as he staggered backward from a punch delivered by Chen Que.
Why is this happening?
Gu Yansheng looked dimly at the Alpha in front of him, who was gritting his teeth and red-eyed, thinking with utmost contempt and confusion: Zhizhi broke up with him and found an Alpha like this?
Aside from the innate scent gland and pheromones, what was so attractive about these Alphas who become fragile and irritable, losing all rationality during their Vulnerable Periods?
His long, firm wrist, which hung by his side, twitched slightly. Then, fierce, ruthless attacks landed solidly on Chen Que, blow after blow. Although Chen Que had the unique advantage of an S-class Alpha in speed and strength, he, unlike Gu Yansheng, lacked professional training. His attacks were disorganized, driven entirely by resentment, and he exuded a hysteria of wanting to beat the other person to death while destroying himself in the process.
Ning Meng, instantly taken down by Gu Yansheng, lay on the ground, debating whether to hug her boss’s leg. But she knew that in a fight, you never cling to your own side. Rubbing her potentially dislocated shoulder blade, she squatted down by Wen Zhiyi’s feet with a tear-streaked face.
“He brings people home before the divorce is final?” She heard the tallest man of the three say softly, with an indescribable, peculiar emotion, “Even if you let them come, you should at least schedule them to avoid each other, shouldn’t you?”
Damn it!
The mentally ill boss trespassed at his ex’s door on his own initiative, only to cause trouble for the beautiful Beta!
The female Alpha, who had one ear cocked to eavesdrop on the drama, quickly stood up to clarify: “My boss came on his own! Don’t slander Mr. Wen!”
She then turned to the young secretary, who was cautiously taking out her phone to call the police, sighed resignedly, and began arguing with her.
Wen Zhiyi couldn’t be bothered with Wei Yuzhi’s provocation. He looked solemnly at Chen Que, who was now glancing in his direction. The Alpha looked no different from a possessed lunatic at the moment, yet he could still manage a soft, innocent smile at Wen Zhiyi while fending off Gu Yansheng.
He saw Chen Que’s prominent nose suddenly twitch. His expression became gloomy, as if he had just smelled an extremely repulsive and uncomfortable odor.
The pale, rock-like handsome Alpha suddenly stopped all movement, allowing Gu Yansheng’s punch to smash against the corner of his lip without any reaction, as if the punch had truly just hit a loose pile of snow.
Chen Que’s next sentence made even Gu Yansheng halt in surprise.
His trembling voice was pale and weak, on the verge of breakdown, fragile and angry, like the slow, unwillingly unclenched fist of a critically ill patient before death: “Zhizhi, whose pheromones are on you?”
With such a dense concentration of pheromones, Chen Que could only think of one possibility: they must have been rolling around in bed for three days and three nights.
