- Chapter 66 - Fiancée and the Female Protagonist
Another bright and sunny morning.
Wen Xiu emerged from his room with a yawn, rubbing his sleepy eyes as he headed to the bathroom. Sunlight streamed through the large floor-to-ceiling window, filling the entire room. He glanced over and saw Gu Lin bustling around the kitchen island, offering her a sweet, well-behaved smile.
“Good morning, Sister Lin.”
The young boy had grown considerably taller since their first meeting and no longer looked as frail as before. Still in the midst of his growth spurt, he seemed to change day by day.
“Morning, A-Xiu.”
Gu Lin looked up to respond before turning her attention back to preparing breakfast.
Fresh lettuce and cabbage were washed, their leaves separated from the stems and finely chopped on the cutting board. She took out three cherry tomatoes, rinsed off any residue, and sliced them in half. Gu Lin tasted one, it was juicy, sweet, and tangy, absolutely delicious. She arranged the vegetables and fruits on a plate, drizzled salad dressing over them, and created the vegetable salad that Wen Yan loved most.
Well, maybe not loved most, but it was definitely something the female artist frequently ate low in calories, nutritious, healthy, and packed with vitamins.
In a small pot, purple sweet potatoes, pumpkin, and eggs were steaming. Once the sweet potatoes and pumpkin had softened completely, she scooped out the tender flesh, mashed it into a paste, and spread it evenly in a bowl. Purple and yellow each occupied half the bowl, exuding a sweet and appetizing aroma that made it look incredibly appealing. The eggs were also halved and placed on top as a garnish.
The drink was freshly squeezed orange juice. Gu Lin took a sip, she hadn’t added any sugar, but it still tasted a bit sweet. The oranges had been airlifted from South Africa, where the unique geographical conditions, particularly the abundant sunlight, made them sweeter than expected.
But it’s just juice, a little sweetness shouldn’t hurt, right?
With that thought, Gu Lin set down the glass. Just then, Wen Xiu came out of the bathroom, and she asked him to set the breakfast on the table while she went to wake Wen Yan.
The time on her watch showed 7:30. Gu Lin calculated the time Wen Yan had gone to bed the night before about seven hours of sleep, which should be enough.
She knocked twice on the door before gently pushing it open. Wen Yan was still asleep, curled up under the blankets like a little fox hugging its tail for warmth.
The scent of pheromones in the room was almost undetectable now, but the crumpled sheets silently testified to the passion and intensity of the previous night.
Gu Lin sat on the edge of the bed, leaned down, and nibbled on Wen Yan’s ear, breathing softly.
“Time to get up~”
It was ticklish and tingling. Disturbed from her sweet dreams, Wen Yan instinctively curled up, trying to escape the other’s grasp.
So Gu Lin mischievously intensified her efforts, gently grinding her teeth and even going so far as to lick Wen Yan’s ear canal.
That was her sensitive spot.
Anyone would have been woken up by that, but Wen Yan kept her eyes closed, pretending to still be asleep, curious to see what Gu Lin would do next.
So here’s the question: What do you do when your girlfriend just won’t wake up?
Someone itching for trouble might suggest shouting to startle her awake. A sly, playful type might recommend pinching her nose to make her gasp for air. And those with their minds in the gutter would probably say to “wake” her up in a more intimate way.
But the most classic, romantic, and safest answer, of course, is to kiss her awake.
If Sleeping Beauty, cursed by a witch, could be awakened by a prince’s kiss, doesn’t that say it all?
Gu Lin unceremoniously captured those delicate, crimson lips, boldly delving in to entwine with the soft, little tongue. He drank in her sweetness, stole her breath, until she could no longer remain indifferent and fought back with equal fervor.
And so, the mission of waking his girlfriend was accomplished.
Wen Yan wrapped her arms around Gu Lin’s neck, her cheeks flushed with a delicate rosy hue from their intense kiss. She licked her lips, savoring the lingering taste, and asked with a smile, “Orange juice?”
“Did you figure it out?”
“Mhm.”
“Ready to get up then?”
Wen Yan glanced toward the window, where pure white curtains blocked most of the sunlight. Spring had already arrived, and everything was coming back to life, it all felt so wonderfully serene.
If a story has a good beginning, it will have a good ending.
For some reason, Wen Yan suddenly recalled that saying.
She turned back, her hand gently stroking the gland at the nape of Gu Lin’s neck. It carried her scent, her mark, a constant reminder to Wen Yan: This person belongs to you.
“No rush. Let your big sister kiss you a little longer.”
Wen Yan lifted her head and sealed those red lips once more.
The two of them fell into another tender, inseparable embrace, leaving poor Wen Xiu waiting alone in the dining room for over ten minutes.
His stomach growled with hunger, but he didn’t dare start eating without them. He could only stare longingly at the door, hoping his two beloved sisters would walk through it any second.
As he waited, he couldn’t help but grumble to himself: Sure, early mornings are a risky time for things to get heated, but surely Lin-jie wouldn’t go that far. Today is the first day of filming for Escape to Survival.
After their family meal, they had to head straight to the set.
Just as Wen Xiu was growing restless, his little hands itching to make a call and play the bad guy, Wen Yan emerged, draped in a light jacket.
The master bedroom had its own bathroom, so she had already freshened up before coming out.
The three of them shared a warm and peaceful breakfast, after which A Xiu took charge of washing the dishes and tidying up. Wen Yan held the highest status at home she hardly ever had to lift a finger for chores, much like a revered queen.
As Wen Xiu often said, “Sister just needs to stay beautiful; I’ll handle the rest.” Not that Wen Yan was incapable or clueless about household tasks her skills in both chores and cooking could even rival Gu Lin’s. But since she was so pampered, she happily left it to others and went to pack her suitcase instead.
Most of the scenes in Escape to Survival were set deep in the mountains, with some parts taking place on the grasslands. Wen Yan had assumed they would film on location in Beidong City and Mengnei City, but Gu Lin explained that the requirements for those scenes were too demanding. Instead, the filming would take place at the studio in Hengdian, with CGI and special effects used to recreate the settings later.
This ensemble film featured five main characters: Ashina and Qingji, Yue Long, Qi Xing, and the prostitute.
The prostitute truly had no name in the script, she was simply labeled as “the prostitute.” It was as if, in that cruel world, her name didn’t matter, nor did her identity. No one cared to know who she was, and whether she lived or died was of no consequence.
Apart from Wen Yan, who played Qi Xing, the other four roles were all newcomers with no reputation, some still carrying obvious traces of youthful naivety. Upon asking, it turned out they were indeed still students at film school.
Wen Yan had once asked Gu Lin why she didn’t reuse actors and why she preferred working with newcomers.
For a director, this principle seemed both laborious and thankless, and it went against financial interests. Newcomers were certainly less experienced than seasoned actors, and the number of retakes would inevitably be higher, potentially delaying the production schedule.
Gu Lin’s answer was simple, just four words:
“I want to be a talent scout.”
Talented individuals are common, but those who recognize talent are rare. This holds true in every field and every circle. Geniuses are not uncommon, but those who are skilled at discovering them and willing to nurture them are almost as rare as phoenix feathers.
After all, elevating others often means creating strong competitors for oneself. Who would willingly invite such trouble? Who would let others block their path to wealth? And who would readily admit that their skills fall short?
For all these reasons, true talent scouts are exceedingly rare, giving rise to another saying: “Even the finest wine fears being hidden in a deep alley.”
No matter how talented or skilled you are, without someone to appreciate and unearth your abilities, you will remain buried in the crowd.
Wen Yan had once been in the same position.
In the entertainment industry, connections truly matter more than talent. Opportunities and premium resources rarely flow to unknown, low-tier actors. This creates an extreme polarization: the popular become even more popular, while the unknown gradually fade into oblivion.
Gu Lin was well aware of this. She wanted to break through this class-like barrier and give those without a platform a chance to shine.
An Ran had been like that, and so had Wen Yan.
The only difference was that one failed to seize the opportunity, while the other did.
Wen Yan pondered this and initially felt moved by her girlfriend’s vision. But then she sensed something amiss.
Wait, you don’t reuse actors, yet you invited me to play the female lead.
Are you trying to subtly signal something to the outside world?
“Director Gu, I suspect you have ulterior motives,” Wen Yan said with a strained smile after the group photo was taken on set. Her gaze was as sharp as an arrow, and Gu Lin couldn’t bring herself to meet it, guiltily averting her eyes.
“Really?”
“Wasn’t it you who accepted my script?”
So it’s my fault now?
Wen Yan rolled her eyes at Gu Lin. If it weren’t for the crowd around them, she would have pinched Gu Lin’s cheeks right then and there.
Devious intentions, hidden ambitions!
How badly did this woman want to announce their relationship to the world? She refused to reuse actors but specifically sent Wen Yan the script, knowing full well Wen Yan couldn’t refuse. That way, she could blatantly show the media just how special Wen Yan was to her.
Wen Yan even suspected that if she hadn’t insisted on keeping their relationship private, Gu Lin would have already posted an official announcement on Weibo. This jealous woman even cared about the online rumors pairing Wen Yan with another actress! Given the chance, she’d probably flaunt their relationship on social media every single day, with captions that never repeated!
“Are you angry?”
Gu Lin also felt that her little schemes were becoming a bit too obvious. Two consecutive collaborations weren’t a big deal, but the problem was that Sister Sisi had already finished writing the third script for her. By the time they collaborated for the third time, it would undoubtedly spark quite a bit of discussion.
What would outsiders speculate about their relationship?
It certainly wouldn’t be anything like “perfect partners” or “soulmates.” Judging by the malicious comments Wen Yan had been receiving online, the prevailing opinion would likely be that she was selling herself for roles.
Gu Lin didn’t want it to be this way, but her girlfriend was truly devoted to her work. Compared to traveling great distances to see each other, wasn’t it better to spend time together through work, supporting and elevating one another?
She was the ideal female lead in Gu Lin’s mind, perfectly suited in every way. Gu Lin had no intention of letting anyone else take that role.
“I’m not angry.”
Wen Yan smiled, her tone indulgent and affectionate.
“I could never be angry with you.”
“You are my female lead.”
Do you understand?
Gu Lin’s words carried multiple layers of meaning, and fortunately, Wen Yan understood every one of them.
“I am your female lead.”
I understand.
Just yours.
