- Chapter 5 - Being Pursued but Still Wanting to Break Off the Engagement
Gu Wu: ???
Why had the battle suddenly shifted to her?
Wait calling off the engagement?
Did she actually have a marriage arrangement with that young lady from the Wen family?
Gu Wu froze for a moment, feeling a bit stifled.
Well, it made sense. Suddenly having a fiancée show up to break off the engagement and a fiancée whose appearance perfectly aligned with her aesthetic preferences was bound to be a little unsettling.
Hearing that the Wen family had come to call off the engagement, Gu Lang’s frown deepened.
“Our Xiao Wu is so wonderful, what right does she have to break off the engagement?”
As if he hadn’t been the one criticizing Wen Yan just moments ago.
Ye Lan rolled her eyes dramatically.
“Because she doesn’t want to!”
When she was younger, she must have been blind to fall for the domineering CEO type, the kind who acted like a possessive little wolfdog. She’d practically brought all this frustration upon herself.
Little wolfdogs didn’t even exist Gu Lang was just a husky!
Annoying, foolish, and endlessly troublesome so stupid it made her want to skin him and turn him into a hotpot.
Ye Lan hung up the phone. She was so angry her head was throbbing. If she’d waited any longer to hang up, she might have had to pinch her philtrum to keep from fainting.
Gu Lang had a natural talent for irritating people, and that little brat Xiao Wu had learned it from him, down to the last detail.
Just thinking about how Gu Xiao Wu still hadn’t dated anyone and went out of her way to annoy every omega she met made Ye Lan’s blood pressure spike. For a moment, she felt so dizzy she could barely stand.
Leaning on the desk, she silently recited the Heart-Calming Mantra several times before finally regaining her composure.
Her four omega daughters were so much better sweet, adorable little treasures.
Ye Lan wiped away nonexistent tears.
By the time she finished her cup of tea, Ye Lan had returned.
Wen Yan set down her white porcelain teacup and straightened up slightly, a little self-consciously.
“I’m sorry, Xiao Yan. Auntie just went to give your Uncle Gu a piece of my mind. Such a big matter, and he didn’t even mention it to me.”
Ye Lan brushed back her hair and smiled apologetically.
Wen Yan hadn’t expected the actress to curse in private and couldn’t help but smile. She could sense Ye Lan’s warmth and friendliness toward her.
“It’s alright, Auntie Ye. I haven’t been waiting long.”
Ye Lan picked up her teacup and took the opportunity to study Wen Yan more closely. The more she looked, the more she felt it was a shame.
The young lady’s beauty went without saying, she was on par with her own four daughters. She had studied abroad alone for many years, a testament to her independence and resilience. After losing her parents, she had handled the funeral arrangements and taken on the responsibility of raising her younger brother. Such a heavy burden, and she had carried it silently without asking anyone for help responsible and capable.
If she had known about this engagement earlier, why would she have gone to such lengths to set up that little brat Xiao Wu with other people? Why would Wen Yan have come here to break off the engagement?
She would have spoiled her endlessly, treating her like her own daughter!
It was all that fool Gu Lang’s fault!
No, she was getting angry again.
Ye Lan quickly set down her teacup, pressed her temples, and silently recited the “Don’t Be Angry” mantra:
When others are angry, I stay calm,
Getting sick from anger helps no one.
If I die from rage, who would rejoice?
Besides, it wastes my strength and voice.
After repeating it a few times, Ye Lan finally felt a bit better. She thought it over and decided she couldn’t bear to let such a wonderful daughter-in-law slip away. She had to try and fight for that useless little rascal.
“Yan Yan.”
Ye Lan switched to a more affectionate form of address, making Wen Yan’s heart skip a beat. A bad feeling crept over her.
“This engagement was our family elder’s dying wish. Even on his sickbed, he never forgot to mention it.”
“If it weren’t for Gu Lang’s fault, our families should have stayed in closer contact over the years, thanks to this engagement.”
“I didn’t know before, but now that I do, you can rest assured about this engagement.”
“We definitely acknowledge it.”
Ye Lan earnestly assured Wen Yan, her eyes brimming with motherly affection.
Wen Yan: ???
She remembered she had come here to break off the engagement, right?
Why was this how things were unfolding?
This was completely different from what she had imagined!
Shouldn’t Ye Lan be sitting with her legs crossed, sneering maliciously, sizing Wen Yan up and down with eyes full of disdain?
“Someone like you?”
“Wanting to marry into our Gu family?”
This script was all wrong!
Wen Yan felt a bit flustered. She forced a smile and reiterated her stance, “But Miss Gu and I have never even met. An engagement like this must be a burden for her.”
Ye Lan waved her hand dismissively, narrowing her eyes with a sly, fox-like smile.
“Oh, feelings can always be nurtured.”
Then she frowned, her expression strikingly reminiscent of the legendary beauty Xi Shi, so pitiable it tugged at the heartstrings.
“Or is it that Yan Yan dislikes our Xiao Wu? Unwilling to marry into the Gu family?”
“Auntie really likes you, you know.”
Wen Yan couldn’t withstand the actress’s warm, emotional tactics and found herself steadily retreating.
Her confrontation with Ye Lan was like a game of chess. At first, Wen Yan thought she held all the advantages, carefully planning each move, only to realize she was already cornered, one step away from being checkmated.
“No, no, Miss Gu and I have never met. How could I possibly dislike her?”
(Even though she actually did dislike that mama’s boy, sister-obsessed Jia Baoyu type, a good-for-nothing, spoiled second-generation heir.)
“My family has gone through major changes, and I have a younger brother to raise. I really don’t have the mood or energy for romance.”
“Miss Gu is no longer young, and I don’t want to hold her back.”
“How could someone as wonderful as Yan Yan ever be considered a burden?”
Ye Lan spoke with righteous conviction.
“How about this: since this medal was a gift from your father, you should keep it.”
“A gift from an elder should not be refused.”
Wen Yan looked at the Independence and Freedom Medal but said nothing.
“Auntie truly likes you, but I also understand that feelings can’t be forced.”
“Young people these days all want to fall in love freely and find someone they genuinely like. That’s a normal way to think. Resisting an arranged engagement and wanting to break it off, Auntie gets it.”
“But sometimes, a childhood betrothal is also a kind of fate, another form of destined relationship.”
“Auntie remembers you’re 23 this year?”
Wen Yan looked up and nodded.
“You’ve just returned from abroad and don’t have many connections or roots in the capital. Xiao Wu has lots of friends and can definitely help you out.”
“If you two hit it off and decide to marry, nothing would make Auntie happier.”
“If it’s not meant to be, you can still be ordinary friends. Bring your brother over to Auntie’s for a meal now and then.”
“How does that sound?”
A young fox could never outwit an old fox with centuries of cunning.
Wen Yan let out a long sigh. She was convinced. From every angle, she couldn’t find a way to refuse the actress.
Moreover, she could sense that Ye Lan’s care for her came from the heart.
Wen Yan felt genuinely touched.
“Auntie Ye, since you put it that way, it would be inappropriate for me to keep insisting.”
Wen Yan took the medal back and placed it in her bag.
The corners of Ye Lan’s eyes curved upward as she smiled with satisfaction.
“That’s a good girl. If you ever need anything, you can always come to Auntie.”
She immediately took out her phone and displayed her WeChat QR code. “Come on, let’s add each other as friends.”
“Xiao Wu has been busy lately. When she returns one day, the two of you should meet.”
Wen Yan felt a chill run down her spine but still took out her phone and added the actress as a friend.
She closed her eyes for a moment, feeling she had sacrificed quite a bit, it would be a shame not to get something in return.
“By the way, Auntie, if I wanted to enter the film and television industry to act, do you have any recommendations for directors or producers?”
Ye Lan tightened her grip on her phone, her eyes lighting up as she looked up.
She knew it, she knew it! Her daughter, Gu Xiao Wu, was exactly that!
“You want to become an actress?”
Ye Lan noticed Wen Yan’s choice of words “film and television industry,” not “entertainment industry.”
Wen Yan nodded, clutching her bag tightly. Discussing this in front of a senior made her somewhat nervous.
Ye Lan broke into a smile. “Xiao Wu knows many excellent directors. I’ll have her arrange for you to meet them, how about that?”
“It’s not that Auntie doesn’t want to introduce you, but I’m already old. The directors and producers I know have all retired to enjoy their golden years.”
Wen Yan felt a bit disappointed upon hearing this but understood it was reasonable and comforted her.
“Auntie, you’re not old at all. You look just like my sister.”
The actress loved it when young girls praised her beauty, and she felt a little giddy inside. However, noticing Wen Yan’s lack of reaction to the earlier suggestion, she realized Wen Yan was somewhat resistant to Xiao Wu’s help.
As compensation, she forwarded the contact of Lao San’s wife to Wen Yan.
Having gotten what she wanted, Wen Yan happily stayed to chat with Actress Ye. Their interests and tastes were similar, and even their preferences aligned closely. Ye Lan grew increasingly fond of this future daughter-in-law and wished Xiao Wu would marry her home immediately.
The two enjoyed a lavish afternoon tea and even took selfies together in the garden.
That afternoon, the actress updated her social media after a long hiatus.
