- Chapter 4 - Visiting to Annul the Engagement
The Gu family estate was nestled at the foot of Mount Li, said to be situated on broad, flat terrain with a river flowing through excellent feng shui. The Gu family’s equestrian center featured in the documentary was nearby.
Mount Li lay northeast of the imperial capital’s suburbs. Even with unobstructed expressway access, the drive took a full two hours.
Wen Yan left home at noon, carrying her beloved handbag. Her heels today were only three centimeters high, easing her concerns about driving. Once she merged onto the expressway, she kept the accelerator firmly pressed to the floor.
The sapphire-blue Panamera roared down the highway, engine growling.
She sped along like the wind, and at 2:35 PM, her car gradually came to a stop on a slope beside the estate. Wen Yan checked her makeup in the rearview mirror, touched up her face, and reapplied lipstick before restarting the car and driving toward the main gate of the Gu estate.
A security guard approached as she arrived. Wen Yan rolled down the window and gave her name.
“Miss Wen Yan? Welcome. Please step out of the vehicle. A dedicated attendant will park your car for you.”
The guard saluted militarily.
Wen Yan initially thought the gesture was meant for her, but after getting out, she noticed guards on both sides saluting a Maybach driving out from the opposite direction.
The pure black Maybach glided past her, its window briefly reflecting her slender, graceful figure.
It’s probably Mr. Gu Lang, she thought.
Without dwelling on it, Wen Yan handed her keys to the security staff and boarded the waiting shuttle car.
“Xiao Wu, what are you looking at?”
Gu Lang looked up and asked his daughter, who was gazing absently out the window.
“Nothing.” The fifth Miss Gu turned back and smiled faintly. “I just saw a beautiful woman who would fit perfectly into a role in my film.”
“Isn’t your film already in production? Are you still missing actors?”
Gu Wu shook her head and withdrew her gaze.
“No, we’re not.”
What a pity, then.
The Gu family’s hospitality toward Wen Yan was nothing short of warm. Actress Ye Lan was gentle and approachable, her tone during their conversation soft and unhurried, completely devoid of any haughty airs one might expect from a wealthy matriarch. It felt like a soothing breeze.
“Miss Wen, I cannot thank you enough for being willing to return my father’s medal.”
Ye Lan caressed the Independence and Freedom Medal, her fingers rubbing over the two characters engraved on the back.
“But, Miss Wen, how did you come to possess this medal?”
Wen Yan smiled, drawing a conclusion from this.
The Gu family knew nothing about the marriage.
From the moment she entered, the actress had treated her with a mix of courtesy and warmth, no awkwardness, no panic, no disdain or impatience. Combined with this question, Wen Yan understood the situation clearly.
“This was passed down to me by my grandfather, Wen Liu. He was Comrade Gu’s wartime brother-in-arms.”
Wen Yan sat gracefully on the burgundy leather sofa.
Ye Lan admired such a young woman, especially after learning during their conversation that she had recently lost both parents and was now raising her younger brother alone. Her heart went out to her even more.
“It must be a token of friendship from the older generation then. If my father gave this to Old Mr. Wen, there’s no need to return it. Consider it a symbol of the bond between our two families.”
She sighed softly.
“Over the years, my husband has been buried in work, and I’ve been constantly on the move. Some connections faded without our notice we didn’t even hear about the tragic loss of your parents.”
“If you ever face any difficulties, please don’t hesitate to tell Auntie. I will certainly help you.”
Reassured by this response, Wen Yan relaxed and said, “This medal should still be returned to you.”
“It seems you might not be aware, but this medal was originally sent by the late Master Gu to the Wen family as a betrothal gift.”
“It serves as a token of the engagement between the Fifth Young Lady and me.”
As Wen Yan explained the origins of this arranged childhood marriage, Ye Lan, the actress, listened with a face that grew increasingly strained, clearly suppressing her anger. Several wrinkles appeared on her well-maintained face.
“That’s the whole story. A few days ago, while sorting through my parents’ belongings, I remembered this matter.”
“Both my grandfather and father acknowledged this engagement and took it very seriously.”
“Since I have never met the Fifth Young Lady of the Gu family, I felt it would be unfair for a commitment made by our ancestors to burden the younger generation. That’s why I came in person to return the medal to you.”
After listening, Ye Lan took several deep breaths to compose herself. She understood Wen Yan’s intention, and her tone became affectionate and apologetic, her voice gentle.
“I’m sorry, Xiao Yan. I truly had no idea about this matter, and neither my father-in-law nor my husband ever mentioned it to me.”
“But since you’ve come here intending to return the medal and dissolve the engagement, I believe it must be true.”
“Auntie will go make a phone call first. Why don’t you sit here for a while and have some fruit?”
Wen Yan was puzzled by the sudden shift in the actress’s address from “Miss Wen” to “Xiao Yan.” Before she could react, Ye Lan had already stood up and left, heading toward the study.
Ye Lan was furious so angry that her head throbbed, and she could no longer maintain her composure as an actress.
She pulled out her phone, scrolled through her contacts, found “Big Stupid Dog,” and tapped to call.
“Hey, honey, what’s up?”
It was Gu Lang, the head of the Gu family.
“I’m asking you, did your father arrange an engagement with the Wen family before he passed away?” Ye Lan gritted her teeth, her tone sharp.
At the mention of the Wen family, Gu Lang frowned. “I think so, but I don’t remember clearly. It was so many years ago.”
“Then think hard about your father’s last words right now! Was there or wasn’t there?” Ye Lan yelled into the phone. If Gu Lang had been in front of her, she would have twisted his ear off!
Gu Lang, still in the car, held the phone away from his ear and tried to recall carefully.
“I think there was. He said if there were suitable children among the grandchildren, an engagement should be arranged.”
“But at that time, Xiao Wu hadn’t even been born yet. As far as I remember, the children from both families were all omegas.”
“Besides, Dad was already suffering from dementia back then. His words couldn’t…”
“So, there was an engagement!”
Ye Lan’s scream was audible even from a distance. Gu Lang frowned, and his daughter across from him cast him a pitying glance, making him even more embarrassed.
“If there was, why didn’t you tell me? Just because your father had dementia, you didn’t take it seriously, is that it?!”
“He only had you, his one son, and gave you everything. And this is how you treat him?”
“Gu, you big dog, do you even have a heart?!”
“If not, did you chew it up yourself?”
“Doesn’t your heart ache?!”
Gu Wu stifled a laugh and quietly turned her face away, pretending not to hear, sparing her father what little dignity he had left.
“Alright, alright, it’s my fault.” Gu Lang coughed and changed the subject. “But why bring this up now?”
“If I didn’t bring it up, would you have told me? If that young lady from the Wen family hadn’t shown up, I probably would have remained in the dark for the rest of my life!”
Hearing her mother’s words, Gu Wu’s mind conjured the image of the beautiful woman she had brushed past at the entrance.
It must be her, the lovely Miss Wen.
Gu Wu had seen countless beauties growing up. Her father possessed a rugged handsomeness, her mother exuded dignified elegance, and her four sisters each had their own distinct charm. As a result, ordinary people and commonplace flowers could no longer catch her eye.
Yet Miss Wen was truly beautiful, a beauty that transcended the mundane.
Her every gesture carried a worldly charm tinged with a nihilistic coldness, like blooming peach blossoms intertwined with the chill of a sharp blade.
Upon hearing this, Gu Lang frowned in disgust. “What? Does she want to marry Xiao Wu?”
Ye Lan detected the scorn and contempt in Gu Lang’s tone, and it made her grit her teeth in frustration.
Just how narcissistic and arrogant could alphas be? She had endured it for as many years as she had been married to Gu Lang.
Once a gentle and humble woman in her youth, she had been relentlessly pushed into becoming a shrew. Without a doubt, it was all thanks to that big, foolish dog.
“Don’t flatter yourself! She came to break off the engagement!”
“Take a good look at your daughter’s character!”
“What family would willingly marry their precious daughter to her?”
