- Chapter 49 - What to Do If the Fiancée Is Drugged
A sleek black extended Bentley slowly came to a halt at the entrance of the building where Gu Lin’s studio was located.
The Chinese character “使” on the license plate stood out prominently.
As the capital of Huaxia, the city was the political center, hosting branch offices of various embassies. Official vehicles for foreign guests were a common sight.
Sharp-eyed passersby recognized it as a license plate belonging to the English embassy and gathered around, pulling out their phones to take photos and videos as mementos.
Liu Mingyan sat in the luxurious back seat of the car, her gaze distant and indifferent as she looked out at the building. Her slightly raised chin accentuated her noble and haughty demeanor.
Her attire for the day was meticulously chosen. A deep blue cheongsam perfectly outlined her figure, with a perky bust and a curvaceous rear that invited wandering thoughts. The hem of the dress reached only to mid-thigh, revealing a pair of flawless, jade-white legs, so slender and smooth that even the toes nestled in her high heels appeared delicate and perfectly rounded.
A pure white mink fur coat, worn to ward off the cold, added a touch of wildness to Liu Mingyan’s elegance.
She retrieved a pair of Gucci sunglasses from her limited-edition Prada handbag. The driver, a tall, dark-haired alpha male dressed in a crisp suit and pristine white gloves, stepped out and opened the door for the esteemed Countess.
Her ten-centimeter heels clicked against the pavement, her slender calves taut and straight, her figure so perfect it seemed devoid of any excess.
Onlookers taking photos couldn’t help but drool with envy, and one daring individual even pointed their phone directly at Liu Mingyan’s face.
He likely mistook her for some beautiful celebrity, unaware that the woman before him was a venomous beauty not to be trifled with.
“Where is what I asked for?” Liu Mingyan asked coolly.
“Right here,” the driver replied respectfully, presenting a small handbag containing pastries baked by the Countess herself.
Liu Mingyan took it and said in an airy tone, “Deal with that man.”
With that, she strode into the nearby building.
“Understood, my lady,” the driver bowed his head, respectfully seeing her off. Then he straightened up, took a few quick steps over to the passerby who had just put away his phone, and held out his hand.
His words were blunt, even arrogant.
“Give me your phone.”
Anyone with a bit of pride would bristle at such a commanding tone, especially when it came from someone they perceived as merely a driver, a wealthy family’s lackey. The passerby, an alpha with a temper and a native of the capital, was immediately offended. He retorted in flawless Beijing dialect, “Who do you think you are?”
“Give me your phone,” the driver repeated.
Standing at six feet tall, the driver towered over the passerby, his gaze fierce and dangerous, like a wild beast eyeing its prey.
“I won’t repeat myself again.”
The driver released his alpha pheromones. Among those of the same gender, the intensity of pheromones often reflected one’s physical prowess. The driver was not just a chauffeur; he was a highly paid personal bodyguard hired by Liu Mingyan. His pheromones were aggressive and overwhelming, instantly suffocating the passerby.
Realizing he was outmatched, the passerby reluctantly handed over his phone, though he tried to sound tough. “Don’t you dare mess with anything on it!”
The driver curled his lips into a cold smile, a mocking glint flashing in his sharp, eagle-like eyes. He opened his phone, found the video he had just recorded of Madam, and deleted it. Then, he located the original file in the system and deleted it again. Only then was it completely disposed of.
“Don’t take random photos next time. Some people are beyond your reach,” he warned.
The passerby retrieved his phone, muttering under his breath, “What’s so great about having money?” before grumbling and walking away.
The driver returned to the car, put on his Bluetooth earpiece, and gripped the steering wheel, awaiting Madam’s instructions.
The building was an ordinary office tower, not in a prime location, but its advantage was the low rent. Adhering to his principle of staying low-key and saving money, Gu Lin had leased the entire fifteenth floor of this building to establish his film studio.
The trailer for Rivalry had already been released, and the film had passed censorship. The next steps were promotion and release. After all, this was Gu Lin and Wen Yan’s debut work and their first collaboration, making it exceptionally significant. Gu Lin didn’t want any mishaps in the subsequent stages and had been working overtime at the studio these past few days.
Qin Xia was reporting the upcoming schedule, which included promotional events and preview screenings in several major cities. Both the director and the main creative team needed to participate, requiring prior coordination with the actors’ agents.
Just then, the desk phone rang. Qin Xia promptly fell silent as Gu Lin picked up the receiver.
“Hello?”
“Hello, Director Lin. This is Xiao Chen from the front desk. There’s a Ms. Liu here to see you, claiming to be your sister…”
Liu Mingyan?
What was she doing here?
Gu Lin’s brow furrowed slightly before relaxing as he replied, “Understood. Bring her in.”
“Right away, Director Lin.”
Setting down the phone, Gu Lin glanced at Qin Xia and said, “You may leave now. I have a guest to attend to.”
“Of course, Director Lin. Should I prepare some tea and snacks?”
“Two cups of black tea, brewed with the finest leaves. No snacks needed.”
“Understood, Director Lin.”
As the professional assistant Qin Xia stepped out of Director Lin’s office, he saw the youthful and attractive receptionist leading the guest over. He had seen this guest at the Gu family estate before, but Qin Xia didn’t dare act familiar in her presence.
“Madam Liu.”
Qin Xia paused to greet her, offering a slight smile as he stepped aside. “Director Lin is inside.”
“Thank you, Xiao Qin.”
Liu Mingyan smiled warmly. Her long hair was elegantly coiled and secured with a single antique hairpin, revealing her smooth, fair neck so fair that the outline of her glands was faintly visible. Her posture was graceful and noble, like a proud white swan.
“You’re too kind. I’ll go prepare your tea right away.”
After exchanging greetings, Qin Xia hurriedly turned away. The receptionist, wearing a respectful smile, escorted Madam Liu inside before quickly scurrying out with small, hurried steps, as if she had just escaped something daunting.
“Assistant Qin, Assistant Qin!”
The pretty receptionist stood outside the break room, glancing in the direction of Director Lin’s office, her curiosity piqued. “Is that lady really Director Lin’s sister?”
She didn’t look the part.
Qin Xia shot the nosy girl an exasperated look, continuing to brew the tea while keeping his voice low. “Curiosity killed the cat. Stop gossiping and get back to work.”
The receptionist pouted with grievance. “I was nearly scared to death. You have no idea how terrifying that lady was when she approached. Her aura was so overwhelming it felt like the air was freezing solid.”
She had been so frightened she even forgot to breathe.
“Then you should keep your distance.” Qin Xia poured hot water into a cup, tendrils of steam curling upward. “Someone like that is beyond our reach to inquire about.”
Even Lady Ye Lan, the renowned actress from the Gu family, spoke of her with caution and reluctance, which showed just how intimidating this Lady Liu truly was.
“Sister Liu, what brings you here to see me today?”
Gu Lin invited Liu Mingyan to sit on the sofa and took a seat opposite her, speaking softly.
Last time at the villa, Liu Mingyan hadn’t stayed long, only visiting briefly before leaving. Gu Lin knew she was busy with political affairs in the UK after all, she was the youngest female omega member of the lower house so she had assumed Liu Mingyan had already returned abroad. She hadn’t expected to see her still in the country today.
Liu Mingyan placed a handmade cake on the coffee table. A few strands of hair had fallen by her ears, and she tucked them back, her ruby earrings glinting brightly.
“There’s been a work transfer. I might be working domestically from now on, so I thought I’d come see our famous director.”
She smiled as she unwrapped the packaging on the coffee table, releasing the sweet, rich aroma of mousse cake. There were only two slices, adorned with strawberries and white chocolate shavings both desserts Gu Lin loved.
“I remember you loved this as a child, but Aunt Lan never let you have too much.”
Liu Mingyan took out a fork and handed one over, saying cheerfully, “I made this myself, it took me all morning. You have to try it and see if you like it.”
Gu Lin accepted the fork but made no move to eat.
Childhood wasn’t a particularly fond memory for Gu Lin. There were the ever-present documentary film crews she couldn’t shake off, the gazes of crowds of adults, the loneliness of being ostracized and isolated by her peers, and the scarce communication and conversations with her sisters.
And then there was the kidnapping that had profoundly impacted her life.
Although Liu Mingyan was one of the few who made those memories less bitter and cold, Gu Lin didn’t really want to revisit that entire period of her life.
“There’s no need to go through all this trouble. I’m not a child anymore.”
Gu Lin, strictly restrained by her mother, had never been able to eat the mousse cake she craved, so she had always yearned for it. But that longing belonged only to her memories and childhood. Once that time had passed, even if she obtained what she once loved, it no longer held the same flavor.
Liu Mingyan’s smile faltered for a moment. Just as she was about to say something, a crisp knock sounded at the door.
“Come in.”
Qin Xia pushed the door open, carrying a tray with two steaming cups of black tea, their fragrance filling the room.
“Da Hong Pao. I hope it’s to your liking, Lady Liu.”
The teacups were elegant white porcelain with gold rims. The black tea was mellow and rich, leaving a lasting aftertaste. Liu Mingyan took a small sip, looked up with a smile, and said, “Thank you, it’s quite good.”
Well, the carefully brewed tea only earned a “quite good.”
Qin Xia felt a pang of disappointment but didn’t show it.
“I won’t disturb you any further then.”
With that, she turned and left the office, giving Gu Lin and Liu Mingyan their privacy.
Gu Lin set down the delicate little fork and picked up her tea to sip. The room was warmed by the heater and humidifier, feeling as cozy as a spring day in the southern regions.
She didn’t believe Liu Mingyan had come on a whim just to deliver a cake. This person had always been driven by fame and fortune, stopping at nothing to achieve her goals. She was far from the fragile omega she appeared to be on the surface. Back then, she had used the Gu family as a stepping stone to get acquainted with the British Earl of Andorra, defeated the earl’s ex-wife and her stepson, and inherited the earl’s billions in wealth. Ruthless and sophisticated, she was not someone who could sit quietly and enjoy tea and conversation.
However, Gu Lin believed there was no benefit in her that would warrant Liu Mingyan’s effort. It was true that she was the heir of the Gu family, but her father was still young, and she didn’t even hold shares in the Gu Corporation yet. So Liu Mingyan’s visit seemed particularly unusual.
“I heard you’re already preparing for your next film?”
Could it really be just casual conversation?
Gu Lin’s mind raced with various speculations as she answered aloud.
“Yes, the project has been approved. Filming will likely start early next year.”
“Do you need me to invest in it for you?”
Liu Mingyan set down her teacup and asked with a smile.
“No need. I have sufficient funds.”
Of course, Xiao Wu would never be short of money.
“That fiancée of yours.”
As soon as Liu Mingyan tentatively brought up Wen Yan’s existence, she keenly noticed the change in Gu Lin’s gaze from calm and indifferent to sharp and piercing, like a sharp arrow ready to be fired, striking her with pain.
“…You really do love her.”
Liu Mingyan’s heart sank, and her expression turned unpleasant. She made no effort to hide her aversion and disgust toward Wen Yan. To Gu Lin, this animosity felt truly strange.
Why?
Why did she dislike her fiancée so much?
Gu Lin felt she was overlooking an important fact, but she couldn’t figure it out right away. After all, when it came to matters of the heart, especially others’ feelings toward her, she was genuinely slow to notice.
“I love her and want to spend my life with her.”
Perhaps even a lifetime wouldn’t be enough, only eternity would suffice.
She was about to say more but was impatiently interrupted by Liu Mingyan.
“That woman is not worthy of you!”
What was so great about Wen Yan?
Hypocritical, vain, and superficial, selfish and self-righteous.
Having known her for so many years, Liu Mingyan had long seen through the true nature beneath that noble and aloof exterior.
A girl craving attention and love, utterly insecure.
How could such an omega ever be worthy of her.
“You’re overstepping with such comments.”
Gu Lin’s expression turned cold. She rarely lost her temper, as she stood too high, towering at the pinnacle of the world, looking down upon the masses.
There were few things in this world worth her anger, and Wen Yan was one of them.
She was the untouchable scale that must not be provoked.
“I respect you as an elder, but that doesn’t mean you can casually judge my fiancée or our relationship.”
“Regardless of your intentions behind those words, I have every right to demand that you retract them and apologize.”
“Your words have made this meeting very unpleasant.”
“If you came here just to say such things, then forgive me for needing to attend to my own matters.”
Liu Mingyan was left pale by Gu Lin’s cold and ruthless retort. Her hands trembled as she clutched her purse, barely able to maintain her fragile, almost shattered elegance.
“Do you really… have to have her and no one else?”
An alpha like you could clearly do so much better.
Gu Lin had already stood up, her gaze now looking down from a height, cold and detached.
“I will only ever be her alpha.”
“Fine.”
Liu Mingyan rose to her feet, her ten-centimeter heels allowing her to meet Gu Lin’s eyes as equals. Her expression was restrained yet resentful, with a brewing storm faintly visible within.
“I went too far with my words, Xiao Wu. Please don’t be angry.”
Liu Mingyan closed her eyes, for the first time showing weakness and yielding before an alpha.
There wasn’t much humiliation in her heart more than anything, it was hatred toward Wen Yan.
“I won’t act like this again in the future.”
“Try the cake I made. I’ll leave as soon as you’ve had some.”
“Don’t be mad anymore, alright?”
Her tone was almost pleading, gentle and coaxing.
Gu Lin glanced down at the two slices of mousse mille-feuille cake and frowned. She hadn’t really wanted to eat it in the first place, and after Liu Mingyan’s earlier remarks, she wanted nothing to do with it.
“Sorry, I have no appetite, and I don’t like it.”
“Please stop treating me like a child.”
Liu Mingyan’s face instantly paled, but her flawless makeup concealed the panic in her heart.
“Not even a single bite?”
“I worked so hard to make it for you.”
Her repeated use of “sister” only irritated Gu Lin further. Her own sisters would never make little cakes for her.
“Sorry, I really don’t like it.”
Gu Lin’s attitude was firm, and Liu Mingyan couldn’t force the cake into her mouth. Reluctantly, she had to give up, picking up her bag and leaving.
Just before she left, she casually remarked,
“The cake has been sitting out for a while. If you really don’t want it, just throw it away.”
“To avoid it going bad.”
Gu Lin acknowledged with an “okay” and saw Liu Mingyan out of the studio.
When she returned to her office, Qin Xia was already waiting there, his gaze repeatedly drifting toward the small cake on the coffee table.
Amused, Gu Lin asked, “Haven’t eaten?”
He looked like he was about to drool.
Qin Xia nodded.
He had been as busy as a dog lately forget eating, he barely had time to sleep.
“If you like it, go ahead and have it. It’s all yours.”
“Really?! Thank you, Director Lin!”
Overjoyed, Qin Xia picked up a fork, scooped up a small piece, and stuffed it into his mouth.
“It’s delicious!”
He licked the cream off the fork, the sweet chocolate melting in his mouth, his eyes squinting with bliss.
Then, in the next second, he lost consciousness and collapsed straight to the floor.
From her office chair, Gu Lin witnessed it all, a chill running down her spine.
That cake.
It had been drugged.
