- Chapter 38 - Traveling with My Fiancée
She was a female omega.
Noble and prestigious, holding a high status, dignified and elegant.
She did not allow anyone to look directly at her face, so Liang Feng did not get a clear view of her specific features.
The woman had sought out Liang Feng on her own initiative, offering him money to help his family’s company through its difficulties, on one condition.
What was it?
Destroy Wen Yan.
The Americano had been drained to the bottom, leaving only residual grounds clinging to the mug. Wen Yan looked out through the glass wall, the streets were bustling with traffic, and crowds flowed endlessly. There were office workers striding purposefully and lively, energetic college students.
The pine tree in the center of the mall had been decorated in advance with small colored lights, building anticipation for the upcoming Christmas season. Staff in cute mascot costumes held clusters of balloons, attracting a crowd of children swirling around them. Everything appeared vibrant and full of life.
Yet Wen Yan felt icy cold all over, her heart dead and silent.
“Have you ever encountered such a woman in Florence?”
Bi Yu shifted the focus abroad. Since Wen Yan had only encountered this series of incidents after returning to the country, the likelihood of the perpetrator being domestic was almost zero.
Wen Yan shook her head.
Apart from painting, her former self had almost no other pastimes. She didn’t enjoy attending balls or banquets, and when she went out, it was usually to carry her sketchbook to the nearest park for plein air painting or to buy a baguette from a bakery and sit on a bench by the fountain feeding pigeons.
A quiet, artistic life, detached from worldly strife.
“Then it will be very difficult to find her.”
Bi Yu sighed. They had finally come this far, only to lose direction again.
Wen Yan continued shaking her head. “Since she has hired people to harm me twice now, there must be some deep-seated hatred between us.”
“The other party is so brazen and unsubtle clearly, they won’t stop until they achieve their goal.”
Bi Yu looked up, inwardly startled by Wen Yan’s words.
This meant,
“She will definitely strike again.”
“As long as she makes a move, she’ll leave more clues.”
“One day, I will learn her name and her identity.”
Who is she?
And why is she so determined to destroy her?
“Wen Yan.”
“Wen Yan.”
Someone was calling her, urgency in their voice.
Wen Yan snapped back to reality and turned to look at the person beside her, skillfully masking her earlier distraction with a faint smile.
“What is it, Director Lin?”
The two were in first class on a flight to Milan. Gu Lin’s light brown eyes were filled with concern.
“You don’t look well.”
“Really? Maybe it’s because I was too excited last night and didn’t sleep well.”
It was true she hadn’t slept well, but not because of excitement. There was no need to share the real reason with Director Lin and cause unnecessary worry.
Gu Lin gave her a deep, searching look, unconvinced by Wen Yan’s explanation. Her calm and composed demeanor didn’t seem like someone who would lose sleep over an upcoming fashion show.
“Then would you like to sleep for a while?”
“I’ll ask the flight attendant to bring you a blanket.”
The flight was long nearly eleven hours from the capital to Milan enough time for Wen Yan to get a good rest.
But Wen Yan didn’t want to sleep. Lately, she had been having nightmares, where a woman with an indistinct face always chased her with bizarre, strange weapons.
Wen Yan ran for her life sometimes across vast plains, sometimes through eerie ancient castles. But no matter how far she ran, whenever she looked back, the woman was always right behind her.
Her face was blurred, yet it bore a wide, grinning smile.
The scene was so terrifying it made her want to scream in horror.
Wen Yan couldn’t clearly remember how the dream ended. What lingered in her mind were the countless escapes and the deep-seated fear. She would jolt awake in the middle of the night, her mouth dry and her body drenched in cold sweat.
After that, she was reluctant to fall back asleep. Instead, she would cradle a warm cup of coffee, sit by the bed, and use a projector to play old movies from over a decade ago, sitting in solitude until dawn.
“No, I’m not really sleepy,” Wen Yan politely declined Gu Lin’s kind offer. After a moment’s thought, she suggested, “How about we chat instead?”
Gu Lin perked up. “What should we talk about?”
“Let’s talk about your screenplays.”
“Whether it’s Rivalry or Escape to Survival, they’re both tragic stories where the protagonists struggle against cruel fate. Did you choose this theme intentionally?”
Gu Lin replied, “Tragedies leave a lasting impression. And from an aesthetic perspective, shattered beauty holds more allure than intact happiness.”
It was a rather academic answer, but Wen Yan understood what he meant.
“Will you ever make a comedy? Maybe aim for the Lunar New Year box office or something?”
Gu Lin shook his head. “I don’t really appreciate absurd comedies. To me, they seem nonsensical and bewildering. Such comedies don’t bring me joy.”
“But I’ve been thinking about challenging myself as a variety show director in the future. I’ve watched some Korean variety shows their perspectives and visuals are quite interesting.”
“Oh? What kind of variety shows?” Wen Yan asked, propping her chin on her hand with interest.
“The family travel kind. I think it’s a truly happy and joyful thing for a family to go on trips together.”
“Well, it seems I won’t have a chance to be on that show,” Wen Yan said with a laugh. She was a firm believer in staying unmarried and child-free, and with both her parents gone, once she achieved career success and ended her engagement, she would truly be alone in the world.
Gu Lin glanced at her but said nothing.
How could he tell her? That variety show was designed specifically for Wen Yan.
She was the only guest, the undeniable star.
Aside from Wen Yan, Gu Lin had no intention of inviting anyone else.
“What about you? Are there any specific types of roles you’d like to play?” Gu Lin asked in return.
Wen Yan thought for a moment before answering, “Hmm, something like a strong female lead in a drama or movie.”
“The kind who doesn’t rely on men no, I mean, doesn’t rely on alphas. A beta or omega who grows independently, achieves her dreams, and becomes successful.”
“Whether there’s a romance subplot or not doesn’t matter. It might even be better if there was one, and the female lead realizes the harsh reality of love, then focuses even more on her career.”
“That’s roughly the kind of role. Is it too difficult to find?”
Wen Yan raised an eyebrow and smiled as she asked Gu Lin.
Of course, it was difficult. Very few screenwriters were willing to write such scripts.
Anyone who did would be labeled as an “omega rights activist,” stirring up unnecessary trouble and gaining nothing but criticism. It was a thankless task.
Gu Lin wore a troubled expression. He desperately wanted to fulfill Wen Yan’s wish, but the first hurdle was convincing Sister Sisi to write such a script and that alone was a daunting challenge.
Wen Yan looked at her like this, her mischievous desire to tease satisfied, and she burst into a laugh, her mood lifting considerably.
Every smile and frown of hers carried a unique charm. Her radiant smile was like the white peach blossoms blooming in a mountain temple in April utterly breathtaking.
Wen Yan was no ice-cold beauty who never smiled. She did smile sometimes enchantingly and alluringly, sometimes with a light and carefree grace. On camera, her smiles were exquisitely beautiful, each frame a masterpiece, capturing her charm to perfection.
But those were merely her masks, like little daisies blooming atop an unfathomable glacier.
True ease and genuine laughter were different.
Her slender shoulders would unconsciously draw in, her posture relaxed and at ease. The corners of her eyes curved, her peach-blossom eyes sparkling with a captivating light that stirred the heart.
Gu Lin watched this, a faint shimmer in her eyes, and suddenly understood that the tale of a ruler setting beacon fires ablaze just to amuse his beloved was neither an exaggeration nor a myth. When you love someone, you’d give everything you have, even your very heart and soul, just to see her happy.
Gu Lin had once scoffed at such boundless devotion, firmly believing that no matter how passionate love might be, one should never abandon their dignity and soul.
But now, she scoffed at her former self, as if she had split into two opposing sides.
What did you know back then?
You knew nothing.
She loved Wen Yan, right up to this very moment.
Loved her without asking for anything in return, hopelessly and irrevocably.
