- Chapter 32 - Let's Break Off the Engagement
On the evening of the wrap-up for “Rivalry,” the crew held a celebratory banquet at an upscale restaurant.
After six long months of intense filming, everyone was finally in a relaxed and excited mood, their faces beaming with smiles and joy.
The female lead, Wen Yan, received a great deal of attention. Her dazzling beauty and equally impressive acting skills placed her at the center of the crowd. Many people approached her with their phones, asking to take photos together. Wen Yan, without any airs of a celebrity, smiled and agreed to every request.
It was clear to anyone watching that she was about to make a splash in the entertainment industry.
Wen Yan had indeed been riding a wave of success lately. Jinyin had arranged for her to star in music videos for two popular singers and secure an endorsement for a product under the Gu Corporation. The response was overwhelming the music videos were exquisitely produced with stunning visuals. Wen Yan’s portrayals, one enchanting and the other coolly elegant, perfectly captured two distinct temperaments without a hint of dissonance.
As soon as the music videos were released, fans not only cheered for their idols finally dropping new albums but also keenly noticed how beautiful the female lead was.
“Did Our Brother Write a Song Today”: Oh my god, where did they find this celestial beauty? I only meant to watch our brother, but I can’t take my eyes off her!
“Marry Me, Handsome Guy, I’m Super Alpha”: Sorry, let me switch sides for five minutes this sister is just too gorgeous.
“A Lead Fan”: Three minutes, I want all the information on this sister.
“An Unpaid Marketing Account”: The subtitles say her name is Wen Yan probably a newcomer, right?
“Universe’s Number One Beauty”: Ahhh! The celestial sister has a Weibo account! Wen Yan doesn’t want to draw anymore, I’ve checked, it’s really her! Go admire her beauty now!
The fans’ love for beautiful faces helped the new music videos and Wen Yan climb the trending charts. Of course, Jinyin had a hand in it behind the scenes, a scenario the company was more than happy to see.
Wen Yan’s Weibo followers skyrocketed from a mere few thousand to over a hundred thousand in no time. Her latest post, a behind-the-scenes photo from the “Rivalry” set, garnered tens of thousands of likes within minutes.
This Weibo account had been registered long ago, and the original owner used to post photos and selfies of herself painting in Florence.
But now, the verified identity read Artist under Wending Entertainment.
“What kind of fairy is this? Studying painting at the world’s third-ranked art school but entering the entertainment industry because she’s too beautiful. God didn’t just open a door for her. He opened a window too!”
“Sister, look at me! I’m your first lead fan, your die-hard fan, your girlfriend fan, your sweet little fan!”
“Sister, I just have one question: Do you date fans? I’m an Alpha, but I’d be an Omega for you.”
“Sister is so beautiful, she must be an Omega, right? Can the person above please step away?”
“I’m crazy for you, obsessed with you, ready to smash my head against the wall for you.”
The comments were bustling with activity. Wen Yan scrolled through them, a smile never leaving her lips. What adorable netizens!
Of course, there were also some harsh voices, calling her a rich second-generation, a nepotism hire, or accusing her of buying her way onto the trending list. The funniest one was someone who said, “Am I the only one who thinks this girl is just average?”
Below it, a flood of replies:
“Yes, you’re the only one.”
Wen Yan shook her head with a laugh and posted a new Weibo update.
@Wen Yan doesn’t want to draw anymore: Heard someone calling for sister, here I am.
The comments instantly surged past a thousand. The fans’ enthusiasm was almost overwhelming, with her phone notifications chiming nonstop. Wen Yan had no choice but to adjust her settings and hand her phone over to her younger brother.
Everyone in the crew knew about this matter. The official Weibo account and all the main creators followed each other, and the publicity team even tagged the two lead actors to ride the wave of hype for the film promotion.
At the end of the wrap party, the entire crew took a group photo as a memento. Gu Lin, as the director and investor, stood deservedly in the center, with the male lead Han Lu on her left and Wen Yan on her right.
Perhaps intimidated by Director Lin’s aura, both lead actors maintained a noticeable distance from her, making the composition appear somewhat awkward in the frame.
The photographer looked up and shouted, “Lead actors, move closer to Director Lin!”
“There’s enough space between you to fit two more people!”
Han Lu didn’t dare get too close Director Lin always carried a cold, detached air and was particularly strict during work, which made him genuinely fearful. As for Wen Yan she felt too embarrassed. Ever since that forced kiss, a sense of shame had been haunting her, making her occasionally want to keep her distance from Director Lin.
But in such a situation, deliberately maintaining distance seemed unnecessary. Moreover, she really liked the new script Director Lin had handed her and wanted to take the role.
Wen Yan thought this and shifted slightly to the left.
Her movement was subtle, but Gu Lin noticed it nonetheless. The photographer was counting down, “One, two, three!” and was about to press the shutter.
In that instant, Gu Lin felt a strong urge to reach out and hold her.
To hold her and smile brightly at the camera.
The flash went off. The photographer checked the photo on the screen, no one had blinked, and the image was sharp and nodded in satisfaction before putting away the camera.
“That’s a wrap!”
“Thank you, everyone!”
With that, the wrap party came to an end.
“Director Lin, I’ll take my leave now. If you have any suitable scripts in the future, feel free to reach out,” Han Lu said with a smile as he bid farewell.
Gu Lin had a policy of not reusing actors she had worked with before except for Wen Yan. Still, since Han Lu had made the request, she didn’t want to embarrass him and responded with a soft “Mm.”
It was common for a few people to drink themselves into a stupor at wrap parties, especially given the heavy workload and stress. Gu Lin arranged for Qin Xia to take the drunk staff back to the hotel first and stood alone at the restaurant entrance.
It was late autumn, the night was cold and damp with rain. She wore a navy German-style trench coat and a Burberry cashmere scarf around her neck.
From a distance, she looked like a model at a Florence fashion week.
Or like a lonely poet.
Wen Yan knew that Qin Xia was seeing others off. She now had a dedicated van, with her bodyguard Li Xiaomeng doubling as the driver and earning two salaries. Giving Director Lin a ride back to the hotel would simply be on the way.
But Gu Lin wasn’t returning to the hotel. Tomorrow was the end of the month again, and she was heading straight to the airport to fly back home to the capital.
Sisi had just texted asking for her location she was on a business trip in Hengdian and could pick Gu Lin up to go to the airport together.
Gu Lin shared her location and waited for Sisi to arrive.
Wen Yan poked her younger brother’s head. The moment Wen Xiu met his sister’s insistent gaze, he knew exactly what she wanted she was too shy to invite Director Lin herself, so she was pushing him to do it.
Wen Xiu pouted and trotted over with small steps.
Before he could reach her, he saw Director Lin answer a phone call. The call was brief, lasting less than a minute, before she hung up.
Wen Yan took a couple of steps closer and saw an elegant, sophisticated woman walking over holding a black umbrella. The woman approached Gu Lin, affectionately handed her the umbrella, and stood by her side.
The woman wore a beige wool coat and a pure white beret, exuding classic elegance. As she gazed at Lin Ye, her clear, moist eyes were filled with tenderness and adoration.
Lin Ye took the umbrella, tilting it slightly toward the woman as they walked side by side along the street. A black Mercedes-Benz coupe was parked quietly nearby. With thoughtful care, Lin Ye helped the woman into the passenger seat before turning to settle into the driver’s seat.
The gears shifted, the engine roared, and the car sped off like a black panther, vanishing instantly from the street.
“Sister!”
Wen Xiu looked at Wen Yan with concern. His sister’s expression was grim, a chilling coldness flickering deep in her eyes.
“It’s nothing.”
Wen Yan lowered her head, then let out a soft laugh. The sound carried a chill that seemed to deepen the cold of the late autumn rainy night.
“Let’s go back.”
