- Chapter 13 - Enhancing Relationships Also Requires Breaking Off Engagements
Wen Yan stayed in Shudian for half a month.
During this time, she returned to the capital twice due to scheduling conflicts and also met with Officer Bi Yu once.
The driver who had nearly killed Wen Yan committed suicide while in detention.
Although this loss of a breakthrough made the two consecutive car accident cases involving the Wen family even more perplexing, it conversely confirmed the murderous nature of the incidents.
Bi Yu’s visit this time was for a more detailed investigation, asking Wen Yan and Wen Xiu to recall if there were any potential suspects in their memories.
“Before the suspect committed suicide, he met with his omega lover and his lawyer. The tool he used to kill himself was a blade hidden in his belt.”
“We suspect he was threatened and didn’t dare reveal the identity of the person who hired him, forcing him to slit his wrists and die.”
“This shows the financial resources and status of the perpetrator.”
“Miss Wen, you’d better think carefully.”
“Who has the Wen family offended?”
Officer Bi Yu’s earnest words left Wen Yan preoccupied for several days. She hadn’t inherited many memories from this body to begin with, and now she was faced with such a life-threatening situation.
While filming, it was inevitable that she wasn’t in the right state of mind. The two scenes she shot in the capital were manageable, as she was only playing a supporting role and didn’t require particularly outstanding acting skills.
But when she returned to Shudian to film Rivalry, Gu Lin, watching Wen Yan through the camera lens, furrowed his brow slightly in confusion.
His female lead seemed downcast, the smile at the corners of her mouth tinged with reluctance.
Had something happened during her trip back to the capital?
Lost in thought, Gu Lin picked up the loudspeaker and called, “Cut!”
Today’s scene was the only intimate moment between the male and female leads in the film. It was the Lantern Festival, and Qi Yan had taken Yi Feng and her younger sister, the Thirteenth Princess, to stroll through the lantern fair at the Confucius Temple.
Away from the scheming and deceit of the imperial palace, Qi Yan and Yi Feng gradually relaxed, treating each other with more sincerity and tenderness.
While walking on the bridge, the Thirteenth Princess was jostled and accidentally fell into the river. In the bitter cold of winter, the water was freezing, but Qi Yan didn’t hesitate to jump in and rescue her.
That evening, Yi Feng, carrying a bowl of ginger soup she had personally prepared, pushed open the door to Qi Yan’s room.
The talented scholar and the beautiful lady, filled with tender affection, naturally shared a night of intimacy.
Before this, the two had also shared a room. But at that time, Yi Feng’s heart did not belong to Qi Yan. After their wedding night, she secretly drank contraceptive medicine, and this became her routine.
This time, however, Yi Feng hesitated. She had sensed the tenderness hidden beneath Qi Yan’s ambitious desire for revenge, especially since this tenderness was reserved solely for her.
The Sixth Princess, who had never received the emperor’s favor, was moved. She was like a pitiful girl who had never tasted candy, if someone gave her a small piece, she would follow that person without question.
And so, she did not order her personal maid to prepare the medicine, leading to the subsequent plot of pregnancy and miscarriage.
The actor playing the male lead, Qi Yan, was named Han Lu. With his bright and handsome looks, he had the face of a standard actor. Combined with his identity as an alpha, he was quite popular on set.
Han Lu’s entertainment agency was Wen Ding Pictures, a subsidiary of the Gu Corporation. This was also Jin Yin’s idea since it was their own resource, it was better to keep the benefits within the family.
With his good looks, backing from a major company, and the role of the male lead, even as a newcomer, it was inevitable that he developed a bit of arrogance. When interacting with female actors, especially those of the omega secondary gender, he carried himself with something of a playboy attitude.
Gu Lin noticed this but had no intention of intervening.
Even before the female lead was replaced, the dynamic between Han Lu and An Ran had already transcended ordinary workplace ambiguity. They were spotted dining together privately outside the set, seemingly having developed feelings through their roles.
When Wen Yan joined the crew, Han Lu employed the same tactics. Recognizing that Wen Yan preferred gentle “puppy-like” charm over domineering alpha types, he showered her with attentive care, pretending to be an eager, tail-wagging admirer.
All he received in return were bewitching smiles and cold rejections.
The beauty had thorns – her radiant face resembled a dazzling red rose, yet her aloof demeanor felt like the distant, cool glow of moonlight. The unattainable always stirs restlessness, and Han Lu grew increasingly impatient, waiting for their intimate scene to quench his burning desire.
During the break, the sunset lingered at the horizon, soon to give way to starry night. The heat remained intense. Using rehearsals as an excuse, Han Lu invited Wen Yan to his trailer where air conditioning and cold drinks awaited – a gesture that was both considerate and boastful of his alpha status.
Wen Yan was deeply moved, then promptly declined his assistant.
Instead, she took her younger brother Wen Xiu to Director Lin’s side to review the previous take.
Gu Lin noticed her approach and shifted aside to let Wen Yan see the monitor, while discussing with the producer how to shoot the upcoming intimate scene.
“Director Lin, as you know, aside from the substantial original fanbase, this production doesn’t have many other promotional advantages,” the producer said.
“If we make this love scene slightly more revealing, it could become a major selling point for the film.”
“After all, both Han Lu and Wen Yan have excellent physical presence – the shots would turn out beautifully.”
“We could select the most striking frames for the trailer.”
“That would guarantee buzz.”
Wen Yan overheard but showed no reaction, merely glancing sideways at Gu Lin. She didn’t believe Director Lin was the type to compromise for market appeal or box office returns. Based on their recent interactions, Wen Yan had already grasped what kind of person the director was when it came to work:
Aloof and obsessive.
Like a star in the sky – not necessarily the brightest one,
but certainly the most distant.
“Should the male lead reveal more? I wouldn’t mind full nudity,” Gu Lin asked with complete seriousness, her tone suggesting no jest.
Anyone who had worked with Director Lin knew she never joked.
Wen Yan burst out laughing, finding the director both cold and adorable. The producer looked equally amused and exasperated.
“Director Lin! I meant that Yi Feng should appear half-undressed.”
“Oh? To what extent counts as half-undressed?”
“Why don’t you demonstrate for me now, Producer?”
The producer, a middle-aged beta man in his forties, turned pale at this suggestion, his face contorting as if suffering from indigestion. His portly figure would only appear greasy and nauseating even partially unclothed – enough to make one vomit lunch and want to pluck out their eyes for cleaning before reinserting them.
Thoroughly deflated, the producer trudged away dejectedly.
Wen Xiu was tactfully led away by Qin Xia, leaving just the two women under the studio lights.
Gu Lin subtly retreated two steps, widening the distance between them to calm her racing heartbeat.
“You’re not in top form today.”
Wen Yan blinked, somewhat embarrassed. “Should we reshoot then?”
“The take is usable, but you’re capable of better.”
“My apologies.”
“You don’t need to apologize to me. Just focus on tonight’s scene.”
For Wen Yan, the intimate scene scheduled for tonight carried more pressure than even the abortion scene she had filmed before.
It was bad enough that she wasn’t in the right headspace, but with her male co-star Han Lu making his intentions toward her blatantly obvious, coupled with an omega’s naturally weak physical self-control, she couldn’t shake off a vague sense of unease.
In this world, alphas could use their pheromones to force omegas into heat.
Wen Yan was genuinely anxious. Subconsciously crossing her arms, she tried to soothe her restless emotions, unaware that she had released a faint trace of her pheromones.
It was an omega’s instinctive cry for comfort.
The cool floral scent drifted to Gu Lin’s nose, and the alpha detected it almost instantly. Her body instinctively urged her to open her glands in response.
But Gu Lin’s strong self-control prevailed. She paused, scanning the surroundings to ensure no other alphas had noticed, and breathed a slight sigh of relief.
“Do you have a blocker patch?”
Wen Yan nodded. Seeing Director Gu’s awkward, hesitant expression, she immediately understood. Swiftly retrieving a pheromone-blocking patch from her pocket, she applied it to the back of her neck.
The fragrance in the air gradually faded.
“Thank you,” Wen Yan said sincerely to Director Gu. She truly was a gentlemanly alpha.
No one could dislike someone like her powerful, tolerant, calm, and self-possessed, treating everyone, including the vulnerable, with equal respect.
Unaware of the high praise she had just received, Gu Lin tugged at her tightly buttoned collar, feeling inexplicably restless and uncomfortable from the sudden heat coursing through her body.
She knew exactly what it was, and having the source of it right beside her only amplified her discomfort.
To make matters worse, Wen Yan actually asked, “Director Gu, if you have time, could you run lines with me? I want to get into the right mindset.”
Gu Lin froze, her Adam’s apple bobbing as she swallowed. Licking her dry lips, she asked incredulously, “Tonight’s scene?”
Wen Yan nodded.
Gu Lin internally screamed: Mom, I can’t handle this!!!
