- Chapter 11 - Regret but Not Cancelling the Engagement
A windfall from heaven.
Gu Lin had no reason to refuse, nor did she dwell on the phrase “chasing a wife.” She simply accepted it.
Xiao Lin Filming: [Thanks, Mom. Rest early, Mom. /Heart]
Mother of Five Babies: [Good luck with filming, sweetie. Mom believes you’re the best. /Rose]
Gu Lin smiled and handed her phone to Qin Xia. “Notify the production coordinator to rearrange the filming schedule and coordinate with all the actors’ availabilities.”
Qin Xia: “Yes, Director Lin.”
The two got into the car.
After fastening her seatbelt, Qin Xia turned and asked, “Back to the hotel, Director Lin?”
Gu Lin shook her head. “To the set.”
“Miss Wen Yan will be coming for an audition later.”
In the rearview mirror, the fifth young lady didn’t seem angry, still calmly resting with her eyes closed.
Qin Xia, who had been feeling guilty after making a mistake, relaxed and drove to the set.
The car came to a smooth stop.
Gu Lin remained with her eyes closed, sitting upright with a straight back, her noble aura undiminished even in such a private space.
Qin Xia turned off the engine.
When it was time to pay, Wen Yan took out her phone only to find that someone had already settled the bill for her.
She instinctively asked who it was, but inexplicably felt it might have been Director Lin.
The boss, a hospitable northerner, grinned, revealing a set of yellowed teeth, his accent as strong as the crayfish he served.
“It was a young, beautiful woman probably a producer.”
“She didn’t look like an actress.”
It was indeed Director Lin.
Wen Yan put her phone away, feeling that this newly met female director was a bit too enthusiastic. She disliked owing favors and considered returning the money. But then she thought that even if she transferred it, it might not be accepted and would only make things awkward, so she let it go.
It was already late, 9:12 p.m.
At this hour, a young person should be getting ready for bed.
Considering she had an audition later, Wen Yan asked her younger brother beside her, “How about I take you back to the hotel to rest first?”
Wen Xiu shook his head. “I’m not tired.”
He had taken a nap in the afternoon and was still quite alert.
“But if you come with me, it’ll be very late by the time we get back.”
Wen Xiu stood firm in his decision, looked up, and pursed his lips. “But Sis, it’s so late. I’m not comfortable with you going alone.”
Even though his sister was also a delicate omega.
And so beautiful.
How could he possibly feel at ease?
Wen Yan’s heart felt as if it had been gently squeezed, then submerged in water sour, soft, and slightly swollen.
He was just a kid who hadn’t even grown taller than her yet.
Wen Yan smiled, ruffled Wen Xiu’s hair, and spoke in an impossibly gentle voice.
“Then you can’t tell me you’re tired later, okay?”
Wen Xiu, his hair tousled, grinned and nodded.
When they arrived at the set, under the bright lights, only a black Hummer was parked there.
The windows were tinted dark, making it impossible to see inside.
Wen Yan wondered if she had come to the wrong place and dialed the number on Director Lin’s business card.
A phone rang inside the Hummer.
Oh, so it was the right place.
The moment the call connected, Wen Yan hung up.
Gu Lin, who had just picked up her phone only to hear a dial tone: …
Pushing the car door open, she spotted Wen Yan and Wen Xiu not far away. Gu Lin got out and walked over, script in hand.
Qin Xia followed behind her.
“Thank you for the treat earlier, Director Lin. It’s only our first meeting, and you’ve been so generous, I’m truly embarrassed.”
Wen Yan greeted her with a smile.
Cold.
Without a stirring wind, on a summer inland night, Gu Lin inexplicably felt a chill run through her body.
You see her smiling at you, bewitching and alluring, and think the beauty has feelings for you; but in reality, it’s like the unreachable peak of a snowy mountain, a mirage in the desert.
Visible yet unattainable.
Beneath her radiant and dazzling exterior lies a bottomless glacier.
Wen Yan was resisting, rejecting the series of goodwill gestures Gu Lin had previously shown.
Gu Lin nodded, her words devoid of much emotion. “It’s fine, this is the last time.”
Qin Xia: What the hell?
Why is the Fifth Young Lady being so dense again?
Shouldn’t she be spouting sweet talk and striking while the iron is hot at a time like this?!
What does she mean by “last time”?!!
It sounds like the two of you just had a breakup meal!!
Wen Yan blinked, seemingly not yet processing the situation.
“Let’s start the audition,” Gu Lin handed over the script. “Just the abortion scene.”
“Perform it to about sixty or seventy percent of your ability. Let me know whenever you feel ready to begin.”
“If you really can’t get into the role, please don’t hesitate to say so. Otherwise, you’ll just be wasting both our time.”
“If you need a scene partner, my assistant Qin Xia can try to work with you.”
After a pause, Gu Lin explained.
“I promised the crew half a day off, so it wouldn’t be right to call the actors back.”
“Any other questions?”
She was completely businesslike and impartial, which, in Qin Xia’s eyes, seemed particularly cold and ruthless. What omega would ever like an alpha like this?
Qin Xia glanced worriedly at Wen Yan, sighing inwardly at the thought that the Fifth Young Lady probably hadn’t left a good impression on her.
Wen Yan looked at Qin Xia. The assistant had thick eyebrows, big eyes, a crew cut, and was tall, he looked like a clueless, brawny guy, a far cry from the cold, ruthless image of Qi Yan in the script.
Staring at that face, Wen Yan found it hard to get into the mood and might even end up laughing.
This was a serious issue, and Wen Yan didn’t want to make such a rookie mistake.
But for this scene, Wen Yan genuinely found it difficult to get into character alone. She needed someone to act with her; otherwise, the emotional intensity wouldn’t come across.
Wen Yan looked up, carefully observing Director Lin.
Her gaze was calm, her demeanor aloof and cold. Compared to Qin Xia, Director Lin was a much better fit for the role of Qi Yan.
Wen Yan made up her mind and spoke up, “Yes.”
Gu Lin looked up at her.
“I’d like Director Lin to act this scene with me.”
Gu Lin agreed without hesitation.
“Alright.”
The audition began with Qi Yan entering the room.
Seeing Gu Lin approach, Wen Yan supported her stomach and stepped forward to greet her. Her expression shifted slightly upon seeing Gu Lin’s icy, unreadable face, a flicker of panic, but she forced a smile nonetheless.
“Husband.”
Before she could say another word, the consort gripped her chin.
“It was you.”
Two words, cold and full of hatred, said it all.
Meeting that intensely resentful gaze, Wen Yan’s hands trembled slightly inside her sleeves as she managed a fragile smile.
“Are you going to kill me, husband?”
“Shut up!”
Qi Yan roared, “Don’t call me husband! You poisonous woman!”
The hand gripping her chin tightened until the knuckles turned white, and Wen Yan winced in pain.
“I only regret marrying you!”
At this moment, the two were extremely close, facing each other in such a posture, the sexual tension palpable.
Qin Xia’s eyes gleamed as he recorded the entire scene with his phone.
He had a feeling this video would bring him immense wealth in the future!
On the screen, Gu Lin had already picked up the medicine bowl and, ignoring Wen Yan’s struggles, forced the “abortion potion” down her throat.
With a flick of his wrist, Qi Yan shattered the bowl.
Wen Yan collapsed to the ground, frantically reaching into her throat, desperate to vomit out the abortion potion she had just swallowed.
This scene wasn’t in the script, but Wen Yan felt that Yi Feng, with her delicate body, had struggled to conceive this child and would do anything to protect it.
But despite several bouts of dry heaving, nothing came up.
Nothing fell but her tears.
When she looked up again, her tear-blurred vision could only make out his unmoving figure.
No.
Qi Yan, don’t leave me.
Don’t do this to me.
A sharp pain seized her abdomen, and Wen Yan nearly crumpled to the floor. One hand clutched her slightly swollen belly while the other trembled as she reached for the hem of Qi Yan’s robe.
Qi Yan took a step back and walked away without a hint of mercy.
Wen Yan’s heart felt hollow, her entire body as if plunged into an icy abyss. Her slender, pale fingers scraped across the floor, producing a sharp, grating sound. Unable to hold back any longer, she broke down into uncontrollable sobs.
The pain in her abdomen grew sharper, and her body trembled violently. A trickle of crimson blood began to spread beneath her.
Her three-month-old child was fading away.
The warm, red stain on her fingertips served as a bloody reminder of this brutal reality.
“My baby!”
“My child!”
Overwhelmed by terror and grief, she shook uncontrollably, tears streaming down her face. All she could do was helplessly clutch at the fabric of her dress.
She remembered her first youthful encounter with Qi Yan, their wedding night, his protection and manipulation of her in the palace, their intimate moments and shared passion.
Wen Yan recalled so many memories, but in the end, her mind fixated on his cold, resolute face as he forced the abortion potion down her throat.
Lying in a pool of blood, she let out a heart-wrenching cry of agony from the depths of her soul.
In the quiet wilderness, the sound echoed.
Qin Xia’s nose stung fiercely. She blinked rapidly, forcing back the tears in her eyes.
Glancing to the left, she saw the pale, quiet young man with red-rimmed eyes, tears falling freely.
To the right, the Fifth Young Miss remained composed, her expression serene, her eyes unruffled.
Yet, on her fair face, a single tear traced its path.
