The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 7
On the taxi, Fu Shuang was so exhausted and sleepy that despite her best efforts to restrain herself from nodding off, she ended up falling asleep in the blink of an eye.
“You can stop here.” The Alpha sister’s voice was as cold as melting snow in early spring—a trickling stream winding around massive mountains, gentle and calm, yet invisibly turning glaciers into green meadows.
Fu Shuang only woke up when she heard her voice coming from the front seat. This was followed by the clicking of the turn signal; the driver was preparing to pull over. Fu Shuang looked down at her phone, stunned that what felt like a mere blink had actually been thirty minutes.
What had the other two people in the car been doing during those thirty minutes?
Did they… know she was asleep? Did she know?
Fortunately, Fu Shuang was sitting in the back seat alone. She wiped the drool from the corner of her mouth, feeling relieved that no one had seen her in such an ungraceful state.
After getting out of the car, Fu Shuang felt much more refreshed. Xu Qing reminded her from ahead, “You didn’t forget anything, did you?”
Fu Shuang glanced at the back seat and nodded obediently while holding her handbag. “Mm.”
As the taxi drove away, Fu Shuang followed Xu Qing into the community. They took the elevator to the 15th floor, and Xu Qing unlocked the door with her fingerprint.
Xu Qing didn’t initiate conversation, so Fu Shuang acted as obediently as a fluffy little animal, walking with her head hung low and cautiously observing her surroundings.
The house was so clean it didn’t look like anyone lived there. Not a speck of dust could be seen on the grey floor; the coffee table and cabinets were completely bare, and even the sofa only held a neatly laid out blanket. The overall decor was brand new, giving off the vibe of a model home.
Fu Shuang surmised that either no one usually lived here, or the owner had extremely rigorous standards for hygiene—perhaps even a storage fanatic.
She stood constrained at the entrance. Seeing that the other woman entered without changing her shoes, Fu Shuang waited until, after a moment, Xu Qing brought her a pair of unopened slippers from somewhere.
When Fu Shuang reached out to take them, she “accidentally” revealed the bruising on the inside of her arm.
Since she had lied about having an abusive stepfather at home, she had to present convincing evidence. It just so happened that the day before, during her mother’s funeral, she had gotten into a fight with the wench who had seduced her late father, leaving some bruises on her arm.
Sure enough, Xu Qing froze for a moment when she saw the bruises.
While Fu Shuang changed her shoes, Xu Qing stood in the living room not far away. Her gaze swept over the space, intending to give a few instructions before leaving.
“The water and electricity bills were paid last month; it should last you for a while,” Xu Qing said after pondering for a long time. “The shower uses gas. Do you want to try the hot water first?”
“No… no need,” Fu Shuang murmured gratefully. “I’ve already troubled you so much, Sister. It’s so late, and I’m still making you worry about these things.”
“It’s nothing. I’m just afraid you’ll run into problems living alone and won’t know how to solve them,” Xu Qing said, her eyes scanning the room until they landed on the refrigerator. “There are some dumplings and meat dishes in the freezer. If you don’t know what to eat, just boil some dumplings.”
Fu Shuang was stunned.
Xu Qing looked her over and said, “If you didn’t bring a change of clothes, you can wear mine for the next few days. I’ll find a few pieces for you.”
“Is this where you used to live, Sister?” Fu Shuang stood awkwardly in place. “You’re not… moving out just to help me, are you?”
“Don’t think of it that way. Didn’t I say I have several vacant properties? The others are livable too, they just either lack appliances or furniture, so it wouldn’t be convenient for you.”
Xu Qing leaned against the arm of the sofa, forcing herself to appear calm while looking at the floor and then at the beautiful Omega. Her intoxication hadn’t fully faded, and in the enclosed space, she felt particularly stifled and restless. Her cheeks felt a bit hot. After steadying her breathing, she said, “This place is too far from where I work. I was already thinking of moving, so you don’t need to worry about it.”
Fu Shuang felt a pang of guilt. All along the way, she had been thinking about how to be wary of this kind Alpha sister and how to scheme against her. She hadn’t expected the other person to voluntarily give up her own home just so she could live peacefully.
“Actually, you don’t have to do this,” Fu Shuang said, lowering her eyes. “To be honest, I… I’ve shared rentals with many people. I don’t mind living with Alphas or Betas. You don’t need to consider my feelings so much…”
Looking at the pitiful and sensible Omega, Xu Qing felt incredibly heartbroken. As the saying goes, children from poor families grow up early—how much bitterness and suffering must she have endured to develop such a personality that always puts others first and constantly yields?
How could those pampered, wealthy young ladies even compare to this?
Fortunately, the engagement was broken off, allowing Xu Qing’s luck to change and lead her to meet the “flowers and grass” of the outside world.
She comforted her, “It’s fine. I don’t stay here often anyway. I usually live with my parents. I don’t have many things here, just a few clothes.”
Fu Shuang didn’t know what to say for a moment.
Xu Qing remembered something else. She took a medical kit out of a cabinet drawer and opened it for her to see. “There’s iodine, alcohol, Band-Aids—everything is here. There are also some antibiotics and cold medicine. Use them whenever you need.”
Fu Shuang sniffled. With a lowered face and red eyes, she said, “Sister got into a fight with someone for me. You should care about yourself first; don’t worry about me.”
Xu Qing: “Haha, I’m fine. At most, I scraped some skin on my hand. It’s no big deal.”
Hearing this, Fu Shuang suddenly leaned in and picked up Xu Qing’s hand to examine it. Sure enough, there were several wounds on her palm, the blood already dried.
She lifted the hand and blew on it, looking deeply saddened.
“If it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t have fought with anyone…”
The warmth against her palm felt like it was tickling her heart. Xu Qing hurriedly pulled her hand back and defended herself, “Who said I don’t fight? I ride my motorcycle and fight all day. Alphas are just like that. You don’t need to blame yourself, really.”
“Is that so?” Fu Shuang asked suspiciously. She looked at her with curiosity, but when her eyes met Xu Qing’s, Fu Shuang shyly lowered her head again.
“Let me apply the medicine for you,” Fu Shuang said, wiping her eyes which were almost out of tears. “This is the only thing I can do right now.”
Help, I’ve cried too many times today; my eyes are dry.
So, Xu Qing sat on the sofa and watched her clumsy operations. Fu Shuang almost knocked over the iodine, but luckily Xu Qing was quick enough to reach out and steady it.
Before Xu Qing could breathe a sigh of relief, the next second, the iodine-soaked cotton swab slipped from Fu Shuang’s hand. A corner of the sofa cushion was stained yellow, and the floor became a complete mess.
Xu Qing: “…”
Logically, this shouldn’t be happening, right?
Wasn’t applying medicine a fairly simple task?
She was a poor girl who had been forced to drop out of school to earn money at a young age—how could she be so clumsy that she couldn’t even handle medicine?
Or was she too nervous?
Nervous.
Was it because of fear… or some other reason?
Xu Qing looked down at the girl who was hurriedly picking up cotton swabs on the floor. Inadvertently, from her vantage point, she saw the fair, swelling skin at the girl’s neckline—a truly enchanting sight. Her hand trembled slightly, and this time, she failed to save the open bottle of iodine.
The scene was an absolute disaster.
For the first time, Xu Qing had made such a foolish mistake. Feeling annoyed with herself, she hurriedly looked for tissues while Fu Shuang went to find a mop. Fu Shuang spent a long time in the bathroom trying to figure out how to use the mop. By the time she returned, Xu Qing had already finished cleaning up, but her shirt and pants were stained with iodine everywhere, making her look quite pathetic.
The two looked at each other in silence. Xu Qing laughed and said, “I think I’ll take a shower here after all. I’ll come back to pack my things after work tomorrow.”
“…Okay.”
The wariness Fu Shuang had just relaxed came rushing back. Who said Alphas didn’t have ulterior motives toward her?
She could even spill medicine all over the floor—wasn’t it because she was mesmerized by her beauty?
Fu Shuang wasn’t surprised. She had enough confidence in her own looks; it was only natural for an Alpha to be infatuated with her. It was just that the other woman had behaved very appropriately so far, which gave Fu Shuang a good impression of her, mentally giving her a three-star rating.
Flirting with her was fine, since Fu Shuang was currently living in her house, but she couldn’t let her take advantage.
She had a taser and pepper spray in her bag.
She must not be careless this time! She couldn’t fall into a deep sleep like she did in the taxi!
The more someone treated her well unconditionally, the more she should be on guard.
Who knew what the other person was thinking while taking a shower?
Fu Shuang kept glancing toward the bathroom, listening to the sound of splashing water, imagining how comfortable the steamy bathroom must be.
She also wanted to take a shower and then have a wonderful sleep. She had been truly exhausted lately. She hadn’t even had time to grieve her mother’s funeral… even when that bastard in the bar tonight mentioned her “dead parents,” she had only been sad for a brief moment.
Her poor mother had vainly hoped to use marriage to protect her for the rest of her life, but when had her mother ever been protected by marriage herself?
In the end, her husband was seduced away by another woman, and she had to deal with a bastard son who appeared out of nowhere. Her husband’s coldness had driven her to despair, and eventually, she was bullied and insulted into an early grave. What kind of misfortune was that?
Whether as an Omega or as a woman, true happiness should be fought for through one’s own efforts, and one should use their own strength to protect themselves, rather than placing hope in a stranger.
Fu Shuang had no intention of following in her mother’s footsteps. Although she had zero expectations for love, she didn’t plan to push away those who were good to her. After all, if she wanted to live independently in this difficult environment, she had to use a few less-than-honorable tactics.
By the time Xu Qing finished her shower and came out, Fu Shuang had already fallen asleep on the sofa.
The defenseless Omega had actually fallen asleep just like that, curled into a tiny ball. Her pink lips were slightly parted, and tear stains remained at the corners of her eyes. It seemed she was truly exhausted.
Xu Qing had changed her clothes. Her long hair was dripping wet as she stood dazed in the hallway.
Thinking of the way she had performed on stage, an involuntary smile appeared on Xu Qing’s lips.
Getting into a fight for a girl she didn’t know was indeed unlike Xu Qing.
If she had been caught by the police, she might have even lost her job.
Even though she didn’t like this job, was there anything in the world easier than lounging around an office and getting paid? Putting herself in the shoes of peers who were struggling to find work, she knew she should cherish it.
After tonight, she would still be that law-abiding, filial, and obedient Xu Qing. She would still be forced to go to work, get married, and live a life she didn’t like.
An occasional impulse made her feel an unprecedented sense of excitement and satisfaction. Moreover, this Omega was so beautiful she couldn’t look away; just seeing her put Xu Qing in an exceptionally good mood.
She had intended to blow-dry her hair before leaving, but seeing the Omega sleeping soundly on the sofa, she feared waking her and decided not to.
She left a note with her phone number on the coffee table, covered the girl with the blanket, turned off the lights, and then tiptoed out the door.
At 1:35 AM, Xu Qing had sobered up. She took a cab back to the vicinity of the noodle shop to find her motorcycle.
There were still several hours until dawn. There wasn’t a single pedestrian on the street, and hardly any cars. Xu Qing put on her helmet and sped through the streets, the engine roaring.
Just the thought of a beautiful and cute Omega living in her house made her unable to contain her excitement.
After the thrill, she rode the bike to the entrance of her workplace. At this hour, she truly couldn’t think of anywhere else to go.
Going to work at 2:30 AM—there was probably no one else in the world as crazy as her.
