The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 32
Time spent staying at home passed quickly. Watching two movies, cooking a meal, playing some games, and tidying up the house—an entire day slipped away just like that.
There was a small interlude during this time. At three o’clock in the afternoon, Ms. Min arrived at the door with fruits and vegetables, knocking persistently.
Xu Qing saw her through the peephole. She was patiently ringing the doorbell, over and over again, urging the person inside to answer.
Hearing the doorbell from the bathroom, Fu Shuang asked Xu Qing with the guilt of a thief, “Who is it?”
Xu Qing replied, “My family is here to deliver some things.”
Family? Does the Alpha sister have family members she’s close with? I’ve never heard of this!
Fu Shuang, dressed in pajamas and sitting on the toilet, panicked for a few seconds. She asked nervously, “Can I stay in here?”
Xu Qing glanced toward the bathroom, looking through the gap in the door frame, and said with a smile, “It’s fine, you don’t need to worry about it.”
Relieved, Fu Shuang continued her business.
In truth, she wasn’t interested in Xu Qing’s family; as long as she didn’t have to face them, she was fine. She figured if they were particularly close, Xu Qing would have mentioned them before. Since she hadn’t, they must be ordinary family members. If that was the case, Fu Shuang really didn’t need to care.
Outside the door, Ms. Min lost her patience and was prepared to pull out her key to enter. Just then, Xu Qing pushed the door open. Min Se’s key was already in the lock, and she froze in embarrassment. “You’re home?”
Xu Qing showed no sign of welcome. Standing at the door, she asked, “Is something the matter?”
Min Se looked her up and down and said sternly, “Xu Qing, you haven’t answered my calls for a week. I couldn’t get through using your father’s phone either. Have you blacklisted us all?”
Xu Qing looked at her expressionlessly. “Adults have their own living space. I didn’t go to disturb you, and you shouldn’t come to disturb me.”
Min Se frowned and let out a heavy sigh.
“You’re still angry with me because I hit you last time, aren’t you?” Min Se showed a look of concern and leaned in closer, wanting to see if there were still marks on her face.
Xu Qing didn’t fall for it. She avoided her slightly to keep her from touching her face and asked, “Ms. Min, I really want to ask you: what kind of expectations did you have when you gave birth to my sister and me?”
Min Se froze.
A sarcastic smile curled on Xu Qing’s lips. “All these years, whenever you mentioned Sister Yuan, you said she was rebellious and mad, never showing a bit of filial piety or the responsibility of an Alpha. I always thought you were pitiful and believed you. It wasn’t until recently that I remembered—Sister Yuan was very good to me when I was little. She liked to take me everywhere. She was a very good elder sister.”
When they were very young, Xu Qing once mentioned wanting to see lotus flowers. There were no lotus ponds near their home, so Xu Yuan searched many places until she found a pond where they could row a boat. During the trip, the boat nearly capsized, so Xu Yuan got into the water, waded through the mud, and supported the boat to guide her around.
She was an elder sister who protected her younger sister and took care of everyone around her. One Mother’s Day, when Xu Qing was still in middle school, she saw Xu Yuan prepare a table of food and present a pearl necklace as a gift. Just as Xu Qing thought she would embarrass herself by having nothing prepared, Xu Yuan quietly told her she had hidden a gift for Xu Qing to give to Ms. Min.
There was a six-year age gap between them. When Xu Yuan went to college, Xu Qing had just finished elementary school. They spent very little time together, and the memories were so distant that Xu Qing had almost forgotten them.
But deep in her memory, some fragments floated back like dust, allowing Xu Qing to capture more clues and form a more comprehensive judgment of the past.
Using Xu Yuan to provoke Min Se was, in fact, a bit mean, but Xu Qing felt forced to do so. She didn’t have the courage to leave like her elder sister had, and she needed support from home—for one thing, the apartment she and her girlfriend were living in was under Ms. Min’s name.
Mentioning Xu Yuan made Min Se’s expression even more complex. Recently, Min Se often thought of her eldest daughter, who had vanished without a trace. In her twenties, she had been much more outstanding than her peers, yet she had stumbled over the matter of marriage. After experiencing a broken home and marital upheaval, that daughter—once the apple of Min Se’s eye—chose to cut ties with the family. This had become a deep, hidden pain in Min Se’s heart.
Over the years, Min Se had always self-deceptively told outsiders that her eldest daughter was rebellious and ignorant, led astray by a “vixen” and self-destructively fleeing to a distant land. She had scrubbed herself clean of any blame, selectively ignoring how she had interfered in the young couple’s marriage, forcing Xu Yuan to do this and that, and even using her granddaughter to threaten her daughter-in-law—demanding she change jobs one moment or quit to stay home and have a second child the next. She had stirred up chaos until the couple had no peace.
Xu Qing used these reminders to warn Ms. Min not to interfere in her life, or she too would follow Sister Yuan’s path, leaving the old couple in Shengyuan City to stare at each other with no one left to torment.
Seeing Min Se hesitate and falter, Xu Qing said coldly, “I don’t plan on going back for at least a month. I have things to do for work. You two do whatever you need to do, but don’t bother me all day. The Fu family’s lesson is right there—do you want to ruin me again?”
“No…” Min Se swallowed. Her aging, sagging skin hung on her thin neck as if it might fall off at any moment, reminding Xu Qing that she was old and no longer had the strength to control her children.
“Xu Qing, I didn’t mean anything else…” Min Se lowered her eyes, suddenly not knowing what to say.
Xu Qing raised an eyebrow at her. She kept one hand on the door, leaving no gap for Ms. Min. She had no patience to hear more, nor any intention of letting her inside.
“Alright,” Min Se sighed, taking the hint. “I just came to see you. You haven’t picked up the phone lately, and I didn’t know how you were.”
Xu Qing sneered. “How could that be? I go to work every day. You have old acquaintances at my unit who monitor me constantly. You’d know how I am just by asking.”
Min Se was silent for a moment, then unfortunately picked up that thread. “You too—you’re disrespectful to the old leaders at work. I was originally planning to talk to you about that…”
Xu Qing looked pained. “Don’t bother. The slap you gave me still hurts. I can’t handle your ‘chats’.”
The woman sighed again. After a long silence, she held out the plastic bag in her hand. “These are vegetables grown at your grandfather’s place. Take them to eat.”
Xu Qing took the bag and closed the door. “Take care. I won’t see you out.”
Once she was sure Xu Qing had sent the person away, Fu Shuang changed her clothes and came out, looking puzzled. “Does your family farm?”
Xu Qing: “Maybe. If my next job doesn’t work out, I’ll have to go back and farm.”
Fu Shuang yawned, not caring in the least. “Farming is farming. At least you don’t have to look at a boss’s face.”
Xu Qing highly doubted the sincerity of those words. If she really ended up farming in the countryside, this money-minded little girl would probably pack her bags and run immediately.
At this moment, Xu Qing didn’t know that Fu Shuang was saving money for something.
When Fu Shuang’s mother passed away, a lawyer revealed a will. It required Fu Shuang, as the daughter, to marry according to her mother’s requirements. She could only claim her inheritance after her marital status changed to “married.”
Fu Shuang hated that terrible will. She had consulted several lawyers, and most gave advice like: “You could find a partner for a fake marriage.”
Fu Shuang was so stubborn that even several lawyers couldn’t pull her back. She insisted, “What if I’m not willing?”
“In that case, there is nothing we can do, unless there is evidence to prove the will was forged.”
Fu Shuang would rather doubt she was her mother’s biological daughter than doubt the authenticity of the will, because she knew that Omega lady all too well.
While at a dead end, her uncle, who lived far away in Europe, called her. He told her that her mother had left an additional codicil to the will.
“If you can provide proof of a stable income, you can be deemed factually independent. Under this condition, you can also receive the inheritance, though you’ll just have to pay a portion of inheritance tax.”
Fu Shuang’s uncle was over sixty and had lived abroad for half his life. His legs and heart were in poor condition, making it impossible for him to fly back to visit his deceased sister. He could only offer diligent advice to his niece over the phone. “If you really can’t meet the requirements, come to Europe to find me. It doesn’t matter if you never marry. I have a place for you to stay; at the very least, you won’t have to worry about food or clothes.”
Fu Shuang had considered going to Europe to join her uncle, but reaching that point would mean she truly couldn’t survive domestically.
She was naturally stubborn and wanted to get the income proof through her own efforts to legitimately inherit the property that belonged to her.
Because of heavy rain on Saturday, the company event was canceled, so Fu Shuang didn’t have to work overtime. In the afternoon, the mother of her student, Jia Yan, called to say Jia Yan was sick, so the piano lesson was also canceled.
Thus, Fu Shuang spent the day at home with Xu Qing. She watched Xu Qing busy herself in the kitchen for a long time. Before long, a tempting sweet aroma wafted from the oven—a fresh, whole chiffon cake!
Xu Qing cut the cake into rounds and evenly spread freshly whipped cream. Between the layers, she spread blueberry jam, coconut jelly, and sago. Then she decorated it with Oreos and chocolate biscuit sticks, making an exquisite birthday cake as if by magic.
At first, Fu Shuang was like a greedy cat, nibbling on the trimmed scraps. But when she saw the finished cake, she couldn’t bring herself to cut it.
“Can we preserve it? I want to be able to see it in the future. Even keeping it in the fridge as a souvenir is fine.”
After symbolically blowing out the birthday candles, Fu Shuang held the plastic knife with both hands, trembling with excitement.
“No, the cream will melt,” Xu Qing said, not caring for her masterpiece at all. She scooped a bit of cream with her finger and smeared it on Fu Shuang’s face. “If you want to eat it, I can make it anytime. Just keep the memory in your heart.”
Fu Shuang cut a piece of cake and eagerly served the first slice to Xu Qing. Then she remembered: “I should take a photo!”
Xu Qing didn’t think much of it. “What for? Just remember it in your heart.”
When Fu Shuang dug a silver, sparkling necklace out of the cake, her excitement was beyond words—
“I was just saying!”
“Thank you, Sister! I love you so much!”
How much could the necklace be sold for? Once she saved enough money, she could find a shell company to pay her social security and salary. That could serve as income proof, and then she could get the inheritance.
She heard from the lawyer that her mother’s inheritance included twenty million in bank deposits alone, plus houses, stocks, cars, and so on. It was enough for Fu Shuang to live extravagantly for a lifetime.
Fu Shuang’s mental calculator was clicking away. At the same time, she didn’t forget to plot—when the time came, what kind of car should she give her sister to make her happy?
