The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 18
On her way back, passing through a bustling commercial district, Xu Qing pulled over to buy fried chicken and burgers. While waiting in line for her order, she thought that the person at home might not have eaten yet, so she ordered an extra combo meal.
The situation in the Xu family was unique. Both her parents worked in government institutions, and except for weekends, they had all three meals at the cafeteria—a habit that didn’t change even after retirement. Consequently, they assumed Xu Qing ate at her workplace, and no one cared that she was famished after a busy day.
Judging others by herself, she realized Bai Lu had woken up even earlier than she had, squeezed onto the subway to go to work, and had a short lunch break. She wondered if Bai Lu had made it home by this time, if she had eaten, and if anyone cared about her.
Even if she had already eaten, it wouldn’t be too much to buy her some milk tea, desserts, or snacks, right?
Should I ask if she’s off work yet?
Xu Qing picked up her phone and saw that her chat history with Lu Lu was still stuck on the previous afternoon—
She almost never reaches out to me proactively. Should I reach out to her?
Does doing this make it look like I’m pursuing her?
Xu Qing hesitated before closing the chat box, thinking: Just buy it! Why do I need to say anything?
Twenty minutes later, Xu Qing’s handlebars and back seat were covered in snack bags, making her look exactly like a delivery driver. She excitedly carried her “cargo” home. Before scanning her fingerprint to unlock the door, she politely knocked first to give the person inside a mental heads-up.
Vague meowing came from inside. Xu Qing pushed the door open, and it bumped into something soft. Looking down, she saw a pair of glowing eyes; Koala rubbed against her as if acting spoiled. Xu Qing had no choice but to set the seven or eight paper bags aside and bend down to pick up the cat before turning on the lights.
The house looked exactly as it had when Xu Qing left that morning, but as she sat on the sofa holding the cat, she caught an indescribable stench.
The source of the smell was Koala’s litter box. The litter had been scattered everywhere, and cat feces had rolled onto the floor. This creature seemed to have zero talent for burying its waste. At that moment, it let out a “meow,” jumped off Xu Qing, and pointed its none-too-bright head toward its food bowl.
“You’re hungry, aren’t you?” Xu Qing said. “Where is your owner?”
Koala didn’t understand what an “owner” was. It demonstrated its point by walking to the food bowl and turning its head to “meow” at Xu Qing.
The cat’s body language told Xu Qing it was starving. Xu Qing said guiltily, “I know you’re hungry, but I don’t have anything to give you.”
She searched the house but couldn’t find where the cat food was kept. After failing to feed the cat fried chicken or rice cakes, Xu Qing had no choice but to call Bai Lu.
The first call went unanswered. Xu Qing poured some milk for Koala; fortunately, the cat liked milk and lapped it up continuously.
Xu Qing took the opportunity to clean the litter box and then searched for nearby pet stores.
Twenty-five minutes later, Xu Qing’s phone rang. She came out of the bathroom to answer it, and just as she was about to say “Hello,” the other side said, “Hello, your delivery is here!”
Xu Qing hung up, collected the cat food she had just ordered via a delivery platform, and poured some for Koala.
She felt a sense of disappointment. When the delivery call rang, she had thought it would be her.
Why isn’t she calling me?
Since when did I start caring about her this much?
It was already 10:23 PM. Could something have happened to a female Omega out there?
Xu Qing sent a message to Bai Lu: “Are you off work yet?”
After about five or six minutes, the other party replied: “I was showering just now and didn’t see the message. I’m off work.”
Xu Qing stared at the word “showering,” feeling a strange surge of emotion. She typed “Where are you” into the chat box, but immediately deleted it.
What was the relationship between her and Bai Lu? What right did she have to know where Bai Lu was at this moment?
She was off work but hadn’t come home; she was spending the night out, showering at someone else’s house, and ignoring Koala… It was all very wrong, but was it any of Xu Qing’s business?
Even as a landlord, she had no right to restrict a tenant’s freedom.
Xu Qing thought it over, threw her phone onto the sofa, and intended to ignore it. After a while, she picked it up again and replied to Bai Lu: “Oh.”
A single, cold “Oh.” Anyone who scrutinized it would know it contained a multitude of emotions.
Xu Qing put down her phone. Having expressed her dissatisfaction, she went into the bathroom and took a refreshing shower.
After finishing, she saw two missed calls on her phone. She glanced at them languidly; one was from Ms. Min, and the other was from her eldest uncle.
The chat with Bai Lu was stuck on that “Oh.” Whether the other party was truly being too cold or simply too busy to deal with her, Xu Qing didn’t know.
She turned off her phone. Seeing that it was late, she simply went to bed.
She woke up earlier than usual the next day. She heard a “clinking and clanking” sound outside. Checking her watch, it was only 6:58 AM.
Xu Qing intended to cover her head and keep sleeping, but the thought of Bai Lu spending the night at someone else’s house last night made her sit up in bed, agitated.
Pushing open the bedroom door, she was nearly hit full-on by the youthful aura emanating from Fu Shuang.
“Morning,” Fu Shuang stood at her bedroom door, looking at her with a beaming smile. She was holding the paper bags Xu Qing had bought the night before and said pleasingly, “Sister, are you having breakfast?”
Xu Qing’s eyes were heavy, her messy hair clinging limply to her face. She glanced at Fu Shuang and said, “No.”
“I ran into some circumstances last night and stayed at a friend’s place. I saw you bought a lot of food; was it for me?” Fu Shuang completely ignored Xu Qing’s dissatisfaction and followed her to the sink. She smiled and said, “Sister, did you wait a long time for me last night?”
Xu Qing shoved her toothbrush into her mouth and brushed her teeth sleepily. Looking at her through the mirror, she said, “No.”
Fu Shuang said, “Then why did you buy so much food, and none of it is even opened…”
Xu Qing mumbled around her toothbrush, “It was for me.”
“Okay,” Fu Shuang pursed her lips, tilting her head to study Xu Qing’s expression with a hint of caution. She said, “Sister, I called you last night but your phone was off. Are you mad at me?”
Xu Qing spat out the foam, remembering that she had indeed turned off her phone. After reacting slowly to the reflection in the mirror for a moment, she said, “No.”
The searching look in Fu Shuang’s eyes finally ceased. She let out a breath and relaxed. “That’s good. I saw you bought cat food for Koala. I actually have canned food prepared in the cabinet under the TV, but I’m really sorry about this time. It won’t happen again, I promise you.”
Xu Qing let out a light chuckle and turned back to look at her. She wiped the foam from the corner of her mouth. Having just woken up, her face appeared quite pale, and her expression was unusually cold—perhaps it was the legendary “morning grumpiness,” which created a sudden sense of distance.
Fu Shuang couldn’t help but stand a bit straighter. Her brown eyes blinked with a clear light, looking at Xu Qing innocently.
Xu Qing spoke with a half-smile: “What are you promising?”
Fu Shuang was somewhat dazed, biting her rose-colored lip.
Xu Qing took a step forward and caught the scent of the shampoo on Fu Shuang—
The lush rose fragrance combined with the high-end feel of lily perfume poked at Xu Qing’s nostrils, feeling somewhat pungent.
Spending the night at someone else’s house, using someone else’s shampoo.
An nameless fire smoldered in Xu Qing’s chest, though she remained outwardly calm. She narrowed her eyes slightly: “Can you promise not to stay out overnight? Or promise to return my calls on time in the future?”
Fu Shuang knitted her soft brows, her eyes turning teary, and agreed without hesitation: “Okay, Sister, I promise you.”
Xu Qing couldn’t stand to see her cry. The young girl’s tricks sent her head spinning, making her fall easily into the emotional trap she had laid.
She cleared her throat, scanned Fu Shuang from top to bottom, and her smile returned to its usual easygoing and gentle state. Her tone carried a hint of nonchalance: “Actually, there’s no need. If you don’t come back, you don’t need to report to me. I have no right to control you. But the cat is yours; you can’t just ignore it.”
Her tone was polite, and combined with her warm, spring-breeze expression, she sounded almost as if she were comforting Fu Shuang.
But in reality? The dear Alpha sister didn’t take her to heart at all.
She didn’t like her as much as she had imagined.
Fu Shuang suddenly felt a sense of trepidation.
