The Omega Who Canceled the Engagement Ended Up Falling for Me - Chapter 17
Xu Kai’s voice was deafening, and nearly everyone in the room was struck with awe and intimidation.
Except for Fu Hengxi, who managed to remain relatively composed, the others sat restlessly, each harboring their own ulterior motives as they sized up the three members of the Xu family.
All the blood had drained from Xu Qing’s face. She didn’t look at Xu Kai; instead, she stood there like a wooden post, her expression hollow and numb.
When she was a child, the household discipline had been strict. She and her sister were often punished by their mother with forced kneeling or standing; sometimes, they were disciplined by their father in front of outsiders. Back then, they were young and ignorant, forced to obey due to parental authority. Even though such punishments left long-lasting scars in her heart, she had never brought up these old debts or mentioned them to her parents.
Now, Xu Qing was twenty-six years old. She had seen the world and was mature and stable—an age where she could even be a parent herself. She possessed her own personality and self-respect. In principle, no matter what mistake she had made, she should not be punished by her parents in such a manner.
Xu Qing did not kneel. What awaited her was Madam Min’s second slap, then a third. Madam Min wanted to continue hitting her, but she was held back by the nanny, Auntie Liu, while Lu Yijiang also feigned an attempt to obstruct her.
“Madam, that’s enough…” Auntie Liu, the nanny, whispered with tearful eyes, trying to persuade her to stop.
Min Se could not push away this meddlesome woman and wished she could kick Xu Qing instead.
It wasn’t until another middle-aged woman, who had been sitting upright on the sofa, stood up that the farce finally showed signs of ending.
“Mrs. Xu.” The woman’s body was frail, and she coughed several times after every sentence she spoke. Originally, she had been an inconspicuous presence, but now everyone in the room looked at her, waiting to hear her thoughts.
She covered her lips with a handkerchief and said, “There’s no need for this. When young people make mistakes, they should be allowed some dignity.”
She spoke elegantly and had a refined appearance with deep-set eyes. One could tell at a glance that she was the mother of the short-haired Omega girl; although the two shared a resemblance, their temperaments and mannerisms were worlds apart.
As she spoke, the Omega girl almost buried her face in the crook of her shoulder, her hands clutching her skirt tightly.
Min Se’s anger had not subsided. When she looked at the mother and daughter, a flash of loathing flickered in her eyes.
Lu Yijiang followed up on the woman’s words: “Exactly. Xu Qing is an adult now. Any problem can be resolved through negotiation. Even if she broke a heavenly law, there’s always a chance to make amends, right, Mrs. Xu?”
Min Se looked at Xu Qing with a cold face and said, “Are you still not going to admit your mistake?”
The corner of Xu Qing’s lip twitched into a smirk as she remained unrepentant. “Mother, what exactly did I do wrong?”
“Are you not clear on what you’ve done yourself?” Min Se suppressed her rage. “You’ve been running to the Fu family every day lately. It turns out it wasn’t for your fiancée, but because you had other designs, didn’t you?”
“What designs could I have?” Xu Qing sat down on the sofa, looking completely fearless. “Out of filial piety, I ran to the Fu family every day for your sake. Otherwise, do you think I’d willingly go to that unlucky place?”
“You scoundrel!” Min Se shouted. “You did something filthy in someone else’s home, and you have the nerve to talk about others?”
“Since you’ve decided that this is the truth, then just beat me to death.” Xu Qing spread her arms across the back of the sofa, looking at Min Se with a calm gaze.
Min Se was on the verge of striking again. The others looked at one another, never expecting Xu Qing to take this kind of attitude.
Watching them and their various schemes—looking like neither humans nor ghosts—Xu Qing completely gave up on caring. She crossed her legs and picked up some fruit from the coffee table to eat.
She peeled an orange with practiced skill, placing the peel back on the table so perfectly it could almost pass for a whole orange again.
It was practically an art form.
Xu Qing split the fruit in half and asked the youngest person in the room, “Want some?”
The girl turned pale and then flushed green as she shook her head.
It seemed no one in this room understood her art.
“It’s quite sweet,” Xu Qing muttered to herself. “You can tell it’s a good orange grown on a tree.”
That was nonsense—where else would an orange grow if not on a tree?
Has Xu Qing gone mad?
Lu Yijiang’s mouth twitched, looking at Xu Qing in disbelief. She asked, “Dr. Xu, are you alright? Do you need to see a doctor?”
“Can a doctor cure stupidity?” Xu Qing said with a smile. “Where is there such a powerful doctor? Perhaps you should go see one too?”
Xu Qing was fair-skinned and refined; when she smiled, it was as if a filter of bubbles and sunlight had been applied. She was beautiful, but it was entirely inappropriate for the moment.
Furthermore, it was only the side of her face that hadn’t been slapped that looked good. The other side was a swollen patch of red; the stark contrast made her look quite eerie.
Xu Kai frowned deeply. Instead of his previous anger, he was now starting to worry.
He and Min Se only had Xu Qing left as their sole child. For many years, Xu Qing had been a source of pride; she was filial, sensible, and exceptionally capable. Anyone who met Xu Kai’s daughter would say, “Director Xu, this daughter of yours is better than my son.”
If they truly drove her insane, where would the Xu family hide their faces? Wouldn’t they become the subject of everyone’s gossip?
Lu Yijiang and the other lady exchanged glances. After a moment, Lu Yijiang pointed at the short-haired Omega girl and asked, “Dr. Xu, do you recognize this sister?”
Xu Qing ignored her, not even gracing her with a glance. She finished her orange slowly, then looked up at Min Se. “Have you decided? How do you plan to execute me?”
Even though Min Se was usually decisive and formidable in the Xu household, she began to feel uneasy facing this abnormal version of Xu Qing.
Had she hit her too hard just now and damaged Xu Qing’s brain?
“What is wrong with you, Xu Qing?” Min Se said displeasedly. “Why are you suddenly acting crazy?”
Xu Qing pulled a hospital diagnostic report from her trouser pocket, unfolded it, and placed it on the coffee table. “Here. I hit my head in a car accident yesterday. It might have actually affected my nerves.”
Min Se picked up the report and was about to put on her glasses for a closer look when Xu Kai snatched it away. He glanced at it and shouted, “Who are you trying to scare? This isn’t even your name on here!”
At the same time, Xu Qing produced a blood test report and several photos of the accident scene.
Min Se took the photos and gasped in disbelief. “You… you were in a car accident?”
“Yesterday, when I left Mr. Fu’s house, I was feeling terribly dizzy and got rear-ended on the road. Later, a blood test revealed that my Narcissone levels were over the limit. I was poisoned,” Xu Qing sneered, looking at the seemingly indifferent Fu Hengxi. “Mr. Fu, your family’s way of treating guests is truly an eye-opener.”
A stir went through the room. Min Se clutched the photos, her shocked gaze igniting with fury. Upon hearing the word “Narcissone,” she immediately understood what had happened. It was a drug that stimulated the nerves and activated Alpha glands—essentially an aphrodisiac for Alphas. The symptoms of poisoning were extremely similar to an Alpha going into heat. Without a blood test, it would be impossible to detect any foul play.
No wonder Min Se had felt something was fishy. How could her upright and obedient child have assaulted someone else’s child outside?
So, it was a trap set by the Fu family?!
Sure enough, Fu Hengxi could no longer sit still upon hearing Xu Qing’s accusation. He gave a forced laugh and said, “Is Young Master Xu misunderstanding something?”
Lu Yijiang hurriedly added, “Exactly. You said yourself that the accident happened after you left the Fu house. What if it was because you drank some unclean beverage after leaving…”
Xu Kai’s face was dark. He looked back and forth between the diagnostic reports and photos Xu Qing had brought out and the expressions of the others in the room. He had reached a rough conclusion.
“You’re right, it is indeed possible that I was poisoned elsewhere,” Xu Qing finally gave Lu Yijiang a look. The latter smirked as if she had been complimented. Xu Qing looked at her and continued, “But I can tell you clearly: after leaving the Fu house, I did not drink anything. The time of the accident is recorded; it was less than twenty minutes after I left.”
It was as if Lu Yijiang had dug a hole and buried herself in it. Her pretty brain worked at high speed as she laughed awkwardly, “It could have happened before you came to our house… you don’t have any evidence to prove we poisoned you, do you?”
Fu Hengxi couldn’t stand listening anymore and kicked her. “You stupid woman, shut your mouth! Stop making things worse!”
“Mr. Fu, your wife is quite right,” Xu Qing smiled faintly. “I have no evidence. I can’t prove there was anything wrong with the tea I drank at your house, nor can I accuse the Fu family of a crime. I am simply pointing out that your family’s hospitality is very unique. It has left me deeply impressed.”
Fu Hengxi endured her sarcasm and squeezed out a smile with narrowed eyes. “A misunderstanding, it’s all a misunderstanding.”
Xu Qing shook her head. “In any case, after this incident, I wouldn’t dare set foot in the Fu household again. One mistake and I might be served another…” She paused, seeing the young Omega girl biting her lip and crying, then changed her words, “…no matter what kind of ‘big surprise’ it is, I can’t afford it.”
Min Se said with a heavy face, “Xu Qing, make it clear. Most importantly—did you, or did you not, have relations with… this one?”
Xu Qing looked at her with a face full of irony. “Would you even believe my words?”
“Of cour—”
The word “course” couldn’t make it out. Min Se saw the side of Xu Qing’s face that she had turned toward her and was momentarily speechless.
Xu Qing picked up another orange from the coffee table, tossed it in her hand, and said to herself, “Since you won’t listen to or believe my words, why should I bother saying anything? Just let the sister speak. Regardless, I won’t marry her. Unless I truly go mad and allow myself to be manipulated by you all.”
The girl’s red eyes suddenly widened. Amidst everyone’s surprised and complicated gazes, she abruptly stood up from the sofa, pushed past her frail mother and the meddling Lu Yijiang, and bolted out the door.
Lu Yijiang’s eyes bulged like a frog’s, and she let out a pained “Ah!”
The girl’s mother seemed to have nothing left to say; she clutched her handkerchief and chased after her. The remaining people, putting on their best masks of civility, offered apologies to Xu Kai and his wife. On the surface, the two families remained harmonious.
Xu Qing peeled the second orange. Now, only her parents remained in the house.
“You were in a car accident yesterday?” Xu Kai finally acted like a parent, sitting down next to Xu Qing and asking with concern, “Are you alright?”
Xu Qing said, “I’m fine. The car needs repairs.”
Xu Kai offered a few more words of comfort. Xu Qing didn’t say a word, focusing solely on eating her snacks and fruit. Min Se stood nearby watching her, her face dark, not speaking a word.
Before Xu Kai could finish talking, Xu Qing stood up and said, “I’m going back to Jinsha Lake. I won’t be living at home for a while. Unless it’s something life-threatening, don’t call me.”
She grabbed her helmet and computer bag and went downstairs. Just as she had arrived, she didn’t take anything extra, nor did she leave anything behind.
As the motorcycle roared through the streets, she felt much, much lighter than when she had arrived.
The Xu couple watched her leave, not knowing what to say for a moment.
Should they apologize? But how could parents apologize to their children?
Blocking her didn’t seem right either. The two of them pondered for a long time before finally concluding: “Sigh, we’re old. We can’t control her anymore.”
