The Omega from Last Night Is My Blind Date - Chapter 4
One month later.
Bai Yue stood at the entrance of the Civil Affairs Bureau, looking at the marriage certificate she had just received. The red cover shone with a glaring light under the sun.
The two people in the photo sat side by side, their expressions quite standard. The arc of their upward-curving lips was just right; it appeared neither too eager nor too forced.
“It is a good picture,” Jiang Manru said softly, looking down at her own copy. “It looks better than an ID photo.”
Bai Yue turned her head to look at her.
Jiang Manru’s profile was plated with a soft halo of light. Her eyelashes cast fine shadows beneath her lids, and the smile at the corners of her lips was flawlessly gentle.
Over the past month, they had dated six times.
There were two dinners, two afternoon teas, one visit to an art gallery, and one musical. Every time, Bai Yue appeared on time, behaved with propriety, and spoke appropriately. Jiang Manru, who accompanied her, listened quietly and responded at the right moments, portraying the word “docile” to the extreme.
Both sets of parents were very satisfied.
And so, today, they received their marriage certificate.
“The car is over there,” Bai Yue said as she put away the certificate, pointing toward the black sedan parked by the road. “Shall I take you home first?”
“Okay.” Jiang Manru nodded and followed her.
The car door opened. Jiang Manru sat in the back seat, and Bai Yue boarded from the other side. The driver started the car, and they merged steadily into the traffic.
It was quiet inside the car.
Bai Yue looked out the window while Jiang Manru looked down at her phone. A distance that felt just right remained between them.
“The family wants to have dinner together tonight,” Bai Yue said, breaking the silence. “My mother booked a restaurant and said we should celebrate.”
“Hmm, mother told me as well,” Jiang Manru said, looking up. “Seven o’clock, at that same Cantonese restaurant?”
“Yes.”
Another brief silence followed.
Bai Yue tapped her fingers lightly on her knee. Over the past month, she and Jiang Manru had spent dozens of hours together, but her understanding of this person remained at the level of a resume and a photograph.
She knew nothing about what she liked, what she disliked, how she acted when angry, or how she behaved when happy.
And she did not need to know.
“Regarding the new house, I had someone rearrange the master bedroom,” Bai Yue said. “Let me know if anything is missing, and I will have someone take care of it.”
“The master bedroom?” Jiang Manru tilted her head slightly. “Are we living together?”
Bai Yue raised an eyebrow, her tone sounding natural. “Are we not living together after getting married?” Although she might stay out overnight, this should be something that would slowly evolve into living apart after marriage; she could not say that aloud right from the beginning.
“Let us live together for now,” she said tactfully. “If you are not used to it, we can live separately. There are many rooms in the house.”
Jiang Manru nodded and said nothing more.
The car drove into the Jiang family’s villa area and stopped at the gate. Before getting out, Jiang Manru turned back to look at Bai Yue.
“I will arrive on time at seven o’clock tonight,” she said in a light voice.
“Good.” Bai Yue nodded.
Jiang Manru pushed the car door open and stepped out. The sunlight fell upon her, and her dress fluttered lightly in the breeze. She walked to the entrance, turned back to wave at Bai Yue, and then disappeared behind the door.
Bai Yue leaned back in her seat and rubbed the space between her brows.
“Take me home,” she told the driver.
At seven o’clock in the evening, in a private room at the Cantonese restaurant.
Both families sat around the table in a warm atmosphere.
Bai Yue’s Omega mother held Jiang Manru’s hand, smiling from ear to ear. “Manru, we are one family from now on. If you need anything, just say so. If Yueyue dares to bully you, tell me immediately!”
Jiang Manru lowered her head and smiled faintly. “Bai Yue treats me very well.”
“That is only expected!” Bai Yue’s mother glared warningly at Bai Yue. “If she dares to treat you poorly, I will be the first one to never forgive her.”
Bai Yue picked up her teacup to hide the helplessness at the corners of her mouth.
Jiang’s mother also chimed in from the side, “Manman has been spoiled by us since she was a child. If there is anything she does that is immature, Yueyue, please be patient.”
“Manru is very sensible,” Bai Yue said, putting down her teacup. “Getting along with her is very comfortable.”
Jiang Manru raised her eyes, meeting her gaze exactly.
Their eyes met and then pulled away at the same time.
“Come, come, let us eat.” Chairman Bai, who was Bai Yue’s Alpha mother, raised her glass. “Today is a great day. I wish the two children a happy life together forever!”
“Happy life together forever!”
Glasses clinked amid laughter and chatter. Bai Yue dealt with the blessings of her elders, but her peripheral vision remained fixed on Jiang Manru.
She was talking to her mother, her profile gentle and her voice light and soft. Her mother was pleased by her and kept putting food on her plate.
She truly was the perfect daughter-in-law.
Bai Yue took a sip of wine and suddenly thought: If this person were not a “good girl,” but rather that White Peach Omega from that night, what would she look like sitting in this seat?
She would probably scare her mother into fainting on the spot.
She nearly laughed out loud and hurriedly used a cough to cover it up.
“What is wrong?” Jiang Manru looked over with concern in her eyes.
“Nothing, I just choked a little.” Bai Yue waved her hand.
Jiang Manru handed her a glass of water, her movements natural.
Bai Yue took it and said thank you.
Their fingertips touched accidentally and then quickly separated.
Jiang Manru’s fingers were warm, and her touch was soft. It felt different from the Omega’s touch that night.
Bai Yue collected her thoughts and continued to handle the dinner.
…
The wedding date was set for three days later. Both sets of parents unanimously agreed that it was a day of great joy.
Bai Yue stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling mirror, letting the stylist adjust her bowtie. The person in the mirror wore a pure white suit, cut cleanly, which made her shoulder line look exceptionally upright. The hairstylist was doing the final styling; the smell of hairspray mixed with perfume wafted through the air.
“CEO Bai’s outfit today,” the stylist exclaimed genuinely, “the bride will certainly not be able to look away once she sees you.”
Bai Yue twitched the corners of her mouth as a response.
Tomorrow was the wedding.
It was not a low-key registration like getting the certificate, but a true wedding in every sense. The marriage between the Bai and Jiang families was a grand event in the business world. It featured a five-star hotel, thousands of guests, a hundred-person planning team, and an eight-figure budget. Her mother personally supervised every detail, from the font on the invitations to the variety of flowers, striving for perfection in everything.
“Yueyue, are you ready?” Her mother’s voice came from outside the door, filled with irrepressible excitement. “Everything is ready on Manru’s side. Would you like to go and see her?”
Bai Yue turned to look at her. “Now? I will see her tomorrow.”
“You child!” Her mother glared at her reproachfully. “What is wrong with meeting the day before the wedding? Manru is all alone at the hotel. You should go keep her company.”
Bai Yue remained silent for two seconds and then nodded perfunctorily. “Fine.”
She changed into a jacket, got into the car, and headed to the hotel where Jiang Manru was staying.
Though she was “all alone,” the Jiang family had actually booked half the hotel. Jiang Manru stayed in the largest suite, with the bridesmaids in the room next door, makeup artists and stylists on standby, and two assistants responsible for running errands.
When Bai Yue arrived, the door to the suite was ajar, and the sound of girls’ laughter came from inside.
She knocked on the door.
“Coming, coming.” A round-faced girl ran over to open the door and was stunned for a moment when she saw Bai Yue. “Ah, CEO Bai!”
“I came to see Manru,” Bai Yue said politely.
“Manru!” the round-faced girl called back. “Your better half is here to visit!”
The laughter inside grew even louder.
Bai Yue was ushered into the room and saw Jiang Manru sitting by the window at a glance. She was wearing simple loungewear, her hair was left loose, and she wore no makeup.
Seeing Bai Yue enter, she opened her eyes slightly, and her earlobes turned red.
“Why are you here?” she asked softly, her voice filled with obvious surprise.
“My mother asked me to come and see you.” Bai Yue walked over and sat down on the sofa opposite her. “Are you nervous?”
“A little.” Jiang Manru’s fingers twisted together. “Are you?”
“I am fine.” Bai Yue leaned back on the sofa and looked around.
The suite was very large. Three or four young girls, all of Jiang Manru’s bridesmaids, sat on the sofa. Snacks and playing cards were spread out on the coffee table, and a variety show was playing on the television at a very low volume.
“CEO Bai, have some water.” A bridesmaid handed her a bottle of mineral water diligently.
Bai Yue took it and said thank you.
“CEO Bai, where are you going for your honeymoon after the wedding?” another bridesmaid asked curiously.
“The Maldives,” Bai Yue answered, though this was the result of an agreement between their mothers. “For one week.”
“Wow, so romantic!” the bridesmaids exclaimed with envy.
Jiang Manru sat quietly to the side the whole time, a faint smile on her lips, occasionally glancing at Bai Yue and then quickly shifting her gaze away.
She was the perfect image of a shy bride.
Bai Yue spent half an hour with her, drank two cups of tea, and handled round after round of questions.
Feeling that it was about time, she stood up, prepared to take her leave.
“I will see you out.” Jiang Manru stood up.
The two walked out of the suite and came to the floor-to-ceiling window at the end of the corridor. Outside the window was the city night view, with neon lights outlining the silhouettes of the high-rise buildings.
“Tomorrow… I will be troubling you.” Jiang Manru kept her head down and said softly.
“Why are you being so formal with me?” Bai Yue looked at her. “Get some rest early; you have to wake up early tomorrow.”
“Hmm.” Jiang Manru nodded and raised her eyes. “Bai Yue.”
“Hmm?”
“Thank you for coming tonight.” After she finished speaking, she lowered her eyes again. “I did not think you would come.”
Bai Yue looked at her and said, “It is the least I could do.”
The two stared at each other symbolically for a moment.
This time, Bai Yue turned her gaze away first. “I am leaving.”
“Be careful on your way,” Jiang Manru said.
When the elevator door opened, Bai Yue glanced back once. Jiang Manru stood where she was, looking like a quiet jasmine flower.
She did not know that after the elevator door closed completely, the corners of the jasmine flower’s mouth slowly curled into a meaningful arc.
Jiang Manru turned and returned to the room. The bridesmaids immediately surrounded her.
“Sister Manru, CEO Bai is so handsome!”
“And she is so gentle, coming here specifically to see you!”
“You two are such a perfect match!”
Jiang Manru smiled as she dealt with them, waiting until they had dispersed before walking into the bedroom alone. She took a new “Lost” badge out of her bag and turned it slowly between her fingers.
Tomorrow was the wedding.
How would her new wife, that Alpha who acted so serious, look when she said “I do”?
She had already started to look forward to it.
The next day, hotel banquet hall.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the entire hall in magnificent splendor, and every seat was taken. The red carpet extended from the entrance to the stage, and both sides were covered with blue and pink hydrangeas and red roses.
Bai Yue stood to one side of the stage, watching the end of the red carpet.
Jiang Manru held her father’s arm, walking toward her step by step.
The wedding dress train dragged on the floor, and the lace embroidery was exquisite and complex. The veil was very long, fluttering lightly with her steps. Her long black hair was pinned up, revealing a slender nape. She wore exquisite makeup on her face, with fine, tiny rhinestones dotted at the corners of her eyes, shining brilliantly under the light.
She kept her head down slightly, with a shy arc on her lips.
A perfect bride.
“I am handing Manru over to you.” Jiang’s father placed Jiang Manru’s hand into Bai Yue’s palm, his tone solemn. “Treat her well.”
“I will.” Bai Yue held that hand.
The fingers were slender, with distinct knuckles. Her fingertips were slightly cool and trembled lightly.
Bai Yue tightened her fingers and took her onto the stage.
The officiant’s voice echoed in her ears, and Bai Yue answered the questions mechanically. Her attention was entirely on the hand in her palm—warm, soft, like the paw of a small animal.
“I do.”
Jiang Manru’s voice was very light, but it was very clear.
Bai Yue turned her head to look at her, exactly meeting her gaze as she lifted her eyes. The light from the crystal chandelier was reflected in her amber eyes, making her dazed for a moment.
“Now, please exchange rings.”
The bridesmaid handed over the ring box.
Bai Yue picked up the simple platinum ring and held up Jiang Manru’s left hand. The ring finger felt soft; she put the ring on gently, and the size was just right.
Jiang Manru also picked up the other ring and put it on the other’s ring finger. Her movements were a bit clumsy, and the ring slipped twice before it went on.
“You may kiss the bride.”
Bai Yue paused for a second.
According to the rehearsal, she should kiss Jiang Manru’s forehead lightly—this was the appropriate scale agreed upon by both families.
But at this moment, looking at those amber eyes, she suddenly wanted to do something different.
She lowered her head slightly, her lips landing on the corner of Jiang Manru’s mouth.
It was as light as a dragonfly skimming the water; a touch that vanished in an instant.
Jiang Manru’s eyes widened, and her face flushed instantly.
Thunderous applause and cheers erupted from offstage.
Bai Yue took a step back, looking at Jiang Manru’s expression. It was shy, surprised, and held a hint of complexity she could not understand.
