- Chapter 18 - The Paranoid Doctor × The Difficult Painter
So soft.
Other than that single thought, Su Niannian’s mind was a complete blank.
She stood frozen, her body as rigid as an ice sculpture, while her heart hammered with such violence it felt as if the thumping would echo far beyond her chest.
A few seconds later, Qi Ning raised her hand to cup the back of Su Niannian’s head, deepening the kiss with an undeniable air of authority.
Her lips felt as delicate as clouds, and a faint scent of sandalwood swirled around them. Su Niannian involuntarily parted her lips, and the hunter who had been waiting for this very moment seized the chance to invade deeper. Like someone savoring a piece of candy, Qi Ning was gentle, yet relentlessly pressing.
“Mmph!” Su Niannian finally regained her senses and tried to push Qi Ning away.
But when a butterfly falls into a spider’s web, the more it struggles, the tighter the threads bind. As a first-time kisser, Su Niannian soon found it difficult to breathe. Her clumsy attempts to break free only served to turn the rims of her eyes a distressed red.
A moment later, a few tears rolled down, splashing against the side of Qi Ning’s face.
Qi Ning lifted her eyes slightly to find Su Niannian’s gaze misty and damp. From the corners of her eyes to her cheeks, the girl was flushed a deep pink—the very picture of someone who had been bullied mercilessly.
I hope she isn’t too angry, Qi Ning thought, slowly releasing her.
She felt a pang of guilt for making Su Niannian cry, but she felt no regret for her impulsive act. Her suppressed desire to move further with Su Niannian, to make it so the girl could look at no one but her, had been swelling daily. That single smile from Niannian had been the fuse, incinerating the last of Qi Ning’s rational restraint.
Qi Ning reached out, brushing away a tear that had slid to Su Niannian’s cheek. She whispered, each word deliberate and soft: “I love you, Niannian.”
This wasn’t the first time she had confessed, but this time, she was more serious than ever before.
“You.” Su Niannian started to speak but let out a sob instead, causing fresh tears to fall from her lashes.
She had prepared so many excuses—that she already had someone in her heart, or that she didn’t like girls but as the words reached her lips, she swallowed them back down. She didn’t want to brush Qi Ning off with such hollow lies.
In the end, Su Niannian only managed to choke out two words through her red eyes: “Go away.”
With that, she shoved Qi Ning and bolted out of the attic. After a few steps, she couldn’t help but steal a glance back, worried that her sudden shove might have caused Qi Ning to crash into something.
Qi Ning found Su Niannian in the garden, curled into a small ball.
She hadn’t put on a coat, and her thin loungewear billowed in the cold wind, making her already slender frame look even more fragile. Sitting on the swing with her knees pulled to her chest, she looked like a pathetic little creature that had been cast out of its home.
Qi Ning took off her down jacket and draped it over Su Niannian’s shoulders. “Aren’t you cold?”
Sensing Qi Ning’s presence, Su Niannian buried her face deeper into her arms, hiding her expression. The jacket still carried Qi Ning’s warmth, enveloping her from behind and making her feel as though she were being held by the doctor herself.
Qi Ning sat down on the swing beside her. “Niannian, are you mad at me?”
She coaxed her softly for a while, but Su Niannian remained motionless. Realizing the girl had stayed in that one position for too long, Qi Ning’s heart tightened. She reached out and grabbed Su Niannian’s wrist, forcing her to look up.
Su Niannian, who had just started to calm down: “?”
With her eyes red and swollen, she stared blankly at Qi Ning, her face covered in tear tracks.
Qi Ning felt as if a needle had pricked her heart. She released Su Niannian’s wrist and tucked a damp strand of hair behind her ear. “Don’t cry.”
Part of her felt an aching tenderness, yet another part felt a surge of dark excitement, wickedly wanting to see Su Niannian cry even more piteously as if she were split into two different people.
Despite the dark undercurrents in her gaze, Qi Ning’s movements remained incredibly gentle. She stroked Su Niannian’s long hair, the soft rhythm acting like a massage. Feeling Qi Ning’s fingers through her hair, Su Niannian unconsciously tilted her head back, looking exactly like a kitten that had been successfully pampered.
As Su Niannian began to grow drowsy, Qi Ning whispered: “Niannian, please forgive me, okay?”
At those words, Su Niannian who had been gradually leaning toward her suddenly sat bolt upright. She turned her head away and muttered through pursed lips, “I won’t.”
Qi Ning’s gaze darkened instantly. She thought of Su Niannian’s “Sister,” and a fresh wave of jealousy washed over her. If it were that person, Su Niannian would surely—
“A first kiss is supposed to be saved for one’s wedding day.”
As she finished, Su Niannian’s eyes welled up with tears again. Her idealized first kiss was supposed to happen amidst the ringing of bells and clusters of flowers, after two people had soulfully exchanged their vows. Even though she had never met someone she liked, Su Niannian had often added details to this scene in her imagination. But now. Waaaah.
The more she thought about it, the more aggrieved she felt. Just then, Qi Ning happened to hold her hand out in front of her. Without thinking, Su Niannian bit down on it.
Her movement wasn’t particularly fast, but Qi Ning didn’t dodge at all, allowing the girl to sink her teeth into her wrist.
Su Niannian: “?”
Su Niannian lifted her eyes to look at her.
Realizing she had ruined the “child’s” romantic fantasy, the jealousy in Qi Ning’s heart was instantly washed away by a surge of sweetness. She even felt a secret thrill that she was the one who had claimed the girl’s first kiss.
To her, Su Niannian’s “biting attack” was nothing but adorable. Instead of pulling away, she even moved her hand closer, worried the girl’s jaw might get tired.
Feeling a delayed sense of embarrassment, Su Niannian finally let go, trying to act as if nothing had happened. Qi Ning, however, felt a strange sense of lingering regret. She smiled and patted Su Niannian’s head. “Just like a little puppy.”
Su Niannian was incensed.
She jumped off the swing to leave, but Qi Ning caught her. “I know I was wrong, Niannian. Don’t ignore me.”
Seeing Su Niannian’s cold silence, Qi Ning furrowed her brows slightly, her expression looking helpless and pained. Su Niannian caught a glimpse of her face. Previously, she always thought every one of Qi Ning’s smiles and frowns was beautiful, but now she couldn’t stop herself from replaying that kiss in her mind.
Gentle yet forceful just like Qi Ning herself.
At the thought, Su Niannian instinctively licked her upper lip. As the kiss had ended, Qi Ning had nipped her lip, leaving a faint, tingling itch that remained even now.
Qi Ning caught that subtle movement, and for a moment, she couldn’t look away. Su Niannian’s lips were much redder than usual, and their slight puffiness was a glaring testament to what had just transpired.
Like a piece of perfectly ripened fruit, she was incredibly tempting.
Qi Ning wanted to kiss her again.
