The Movie Queen's Silly CEO - Chapter 6
The news of being replaced was a bolt from the blue for He YanHui. It hit her so hard she didn’t have the face to go back to Feng Xi. After hanging up the phone, she left in a daze, not wanting to say a single word.
“Sister Feng Xi, I think He YanHui left.” The assistant poked her head out to look, only catching a glimpse of He YanHui’s back and her own assistant hurrying after her.
“Okay. Go check if the food we ordered has arrived,” Feng Xi said.
While He YanHui was on the phone, Feng Xi had vaguely heard a few words about director Liu Zhi’s project getting a new investor. Combining that with the look on He YanHui’s face and her sudden departure, Feng Xi couldn’t help but wonder if the new investor had forced someone else into the role, squeezing He YanHui out.
Feng Xi thought to herself and couldn’t help but smile. If that were the case, she could only say, “brilliantly done.”
Before Feng Xi could even take a bite of her hot meal, Sun Yan’s call came through. The moment she answered, Sun Yan started chattering on and on.
“Feng Xi, you’ve made me look so good, you know that! Just now, Liu Zhi called me. He said he wants to ask you to be the female lead in his movie, that he wants to apologize to you, and he’s adding a 20% bonus to your salary! You’re incredible! Hahaha, just thinking about the way he acted a few days ago is so satisfying. Your friend is amazing!”
Feng Xi was a little dizzy and confused. “Sister Yan, are you saying director Liu Zhi wants me to be the female lead? But he just rejected me the other day, didn’t he?”
“Huh, you don’t know about this?” Sun Yan was also taken aback by Feng Xi’s words. “Do you know who the new investor is?”
“The new investor? I don’t know any investors.” Feng Xi was baffled. “Sister Yan, what exactly is going on?”
“Liu Zhi just called me. He said the new investor specifically requested you as the female lead and also wants to apologize to you in person,” Sun Yan simply repeated what she had heard.
Upon hearing that she was specifically requested, Feng Xi instinctively felt a sense of resistance. “Sister Yan, do you know who this new investor is?”
“I’m not sure. It doesn’t seem to be an investment from a mainstream film company,” Sun Yan said.
Feng Xi furrowed her brow. “Did the new investor ask for the leads to attend a dinner party?”
After hearing Feng Xi’s question, Sun Yan fell silent. “I’m sorry, I thought you knew the investor, so when they said they wanted to have a dinner party, I just agreed directly…”
“It’s okay. They probably said some things that made you misunderstand.” Feng Xi massaged her temples. “Sister Yan, did they decide on a place for the dinner?”
“Yes, it’s tomorrow night. The dinner party is at the usual place. Liu Zhi said it would show more sincerity for his apology…” Sun Yan sounded more and more embarrassed. If this really was a setup, her ten years as a manager would have been for nothing. How could she so easily believe the nonsense from these directors and investors?
“How about I help you turn it down? You’re in a different film crew now anyway,” Sun Yan offered.
Feng Xi poked at her boxed lunch with her chopsticks. “It’s fine. I’ll go and see. I won’t make the same mistake I made last time.”
There was a moment of silence from Sun Yan’s end. “Alright. I’ll come pick you up. I’ll go with you.”
“Thank you, Sister Yan.”
Some misunderstandings just happen inexplicably, and this dinner party was one of them.
When Mu Qing met with Liu Zhi, she hadn’t said much. She had only stated plainly before dinner that the 30 million yuan investment was for Feng Xi, and then she ate in silence.
Upon hearing this, Liu Zhi began to think it over. By the end of the meal, he was convinced he had figured out the relationship between Mu Qing and Feng Xi, and he was the one who proposed organizing the dinner party.
Mu Qing, hearing this, thought it was a good opportunity to clear the slate with Feng Xi. So when Liu Zhi eagerly suggested getting the leads and the investors together for a meal to build rapport, she naturally didn’t refuse.
After waiting with some unease, Feng Xi took half a day off in advance. When the time came, she and Sun Yan went to the same hotel as last time.
“Don’t worry. If anything seems wrong, I’ll protect you. Just don’t drink any wine that you don’t pour yourself,” Sun Yan warned anxiously at the door of the private room, looking even more nervous than Feng Xi.
“It’s alright. What kind of situations haven’t I dealt with? I can handle it,” Feng Xi said, and calmly pushed the door open to walk inside.
Hearing the door open, the people in the room all looked over in unison. Seeing that it was Feng Xi, Liu Zhi quickly stood up and walked over with a beaming smile.
“Ah, Teacher Feng is here. Please come in and sit. We saved you a seat inside.” Liu Zhi eagerly pulled out a chair for Feng Xi and guided her to a seat close to the head of the table.
As her manager, Sun Yan didn’t sit at the same table as Feng Xi. She took a seat further back and kept a close eye on everything out of the corner of her eye.
Seeing He YanHui also sitting at the table, Feng Xi’s brow twitched. “Director Liu, I heard you were about to sign a contract with Teacher He. What made you suddenly change your mind?”
“Haha, it was all a misunderstanding.” Upon hearing Feng Xi’s words, Liu Zhi thought she was bringing up old scores and immediately apologized with a good attitude. “It was my fault last time. I had no idea Wang Jiancheng was a person of such poor character. I’m truly sorry for the trouble I caused you, Teacher Feng.”
Liu Zhi raised his glass. After saying his piece, he downed half a glass of red wine, looking very sincere. “Teacher Feng, let’s let bygones be bygones. I hope we can work together well on this project.”
“You’re too kind, Director Liu,” Feng Xi said, raising her wine glass and taking a small sip.
Seeing how polite Liu Zhi was to Feng Xi, He YanHui felt a sense of injustice. “Director Liu, why hasn’t the new investor arrived yet? Are they not coming?”
Liu Zhi smiled. “No need to rush. The agreed-upon time hasn’t arrived yet.” President Mu is a busy person, so what if she’s a little late?
“Teacher Feng, you must have a very good relationship with President Mu to get her to invest so much money in a production for you,” He YanHui said with a hint of petulance, her gaze on Feng Xi filled with suspicion. If Feng Xi was really friends with Mu Qing, it made no sense that she’d be bullied by those investors.
President Mu? Feng Xi’s brows twitched. Her first thought was Mu Qing, the woman who had left a check for her, followed by the memories that made her blush.
Before Feng Xi could say anything, the door of the private room was pushed open again. Mu Qing walked in, still in her formal business attire.
“President Mu is here! Quickly, please come this way.” Unsurprisingly, Liu Zhi was the first to rush over. He thoughtfully arranged for Mu Qing to sit next to Feng Xi.
Feng Xi: “…Oh, for goodness sake!”
The moment she saw Mu Qing, Feng Xi’s mind went blank, and her body instantly tensed. She had no idea how to react.
If she were given another chance, she would… she would still have come, but she would have mentally prepared herself first, so she wouldn’t be this shocked.
“Feng Xi, long time no see.” Compared to Feng Xi, who was unsure how to react, Mu Qing was much more composed. After a greeting, she held out her hand.
“Yes, a… a long time no see.” Feng Xi suppressed her private emotions and treated Mu Qing as just an investor.
She extended her hand and lightly shook Mu Qing’s. As the warm touch traveled to their nerve endings, both Mu Qing and Feng Xi’s thought processes synced for a moment. They instinctively tensed their bodies, quickly released each other’s hands, and averted their gazes, pretending as if nothing had happened.
Liu Zhi sat on Mu Qing’s other side and poured half a glass of red wine for himself. “President Mu, thank you for your investment. I’d like to toast you.”
“You’re welcome. I don’t drink,” Mu Qing said. She raised her empty glass, clinked it with Liu Zhi’s, and then put it down.
Liu Zhi was stunned for a moment before he understood. He then finished the half-glass of red wine himself.
Watching the person next to her out of the corner of her eye, Feng Xi picked up her chopsticks and quietly started to eat, trying her best to minimize her presence.
She had no problems with Mu Qing as a person and even liked her upright character. However, that couldn’t erase what had happened between them. Every time Feng Xi looked at Mu Qing’s hand, her mind would uncontrollably start replaying things in a loop.
“Please, help me…”
“Hold me, please…”
“Please…”
Feng Xi put down her chopsticks and picked up the wine glass next to her, hoping to use the taste of the wine to calm her chaotic thoughts.
Mu Qing reached out and gently pressed down on Feng Xi’s glass. She turned to look at her. “You shouldn’t drink too much. It’s not good for you.”
“Cough, okay.” Feng Xi let go of the glass and awkwardly withdrew her hand. She let Mu Qing take a new glass and pour juice into it for her.
“President Mu, I haven’t introduced you yet. These are the leads of the movie.” Liu Zhi had seen their interaction and was even more convinced that he couldn’t offend Feng Xi. “This is our male lead, Huo Qi.”
Huo Qi, who was just introduced, raised his glass to Mu Qing. “President Mu, I’d like to toast you.”
“Hello,” Mu Qing said, raising her glass and taking a sip of juice.
“And this is Teacher He YanHui. She just won an award for Best Actress last year and is making a friendly cameo as the fourth female lead this time,” Liu Zhi said in a polite manner, his attention still focused on Mu Qing.
“Hello.” Mu Qing didn’t play favorites. She greeted everyone Liu Zhi introduced and took a small sip of juice.
He YanHui, like Liu Zhi, was closely watching their interactions. When she saw Feng Xi’s slightly red face, she fell into deep thought.
The glass in Feng Xi’s hand contained juice, so it didn’t make sense that she would be drunk. So then why was Feng Xi blushing? Was it just because Mu Qing was sitting next to her? Could there really be something between them?
By the end of the meal, Feng Xi was left with a faint sense of awkwardness, having had almost no communication with Mu Qing.
Liu Zhi, the director, believed he had seen through everything—the unspoken relationship between Mu Qing and Feng Xi.
The suspicious He YanHui fell into contemplation, beginning to doubt the true nature of Feng Xi and Mu Qing’s relationship.
As for Mu Qing, she had a full meal and believed she had repaid her debt to Feng Xi.
