The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 62
Chapter 62
Lin Mo sat beside Xue Luhe for a while, both of them silent, savoring the quiet connection between their souls.
After weighing it in her mind, Lin Mo finally spoke up: “Public opinion has been blackening your name lately… do you have a counter-strategy yet?”
Xue Luhe curled her lips into a look of indifference, reaching out to touch Lin Mo’s wrist. “You don’t need to worry about that. I’ll handle everything.”
In the past, Lin Mo would have laughed it off, but now she didn’t want to let it go so easily. She desperately wanted to do something for Xue Luhe; even if her voice was small and her power limited, she wanted to be of use.
“Tell me,” Lin Mo squeezed Xue Luhe’s fingers, her voice sincere. “Tell me the specifics. Maybe I can help brainstorm a solution, and even if I can’t, I can at least offer some comfort!”
Xue Luhe looked into those bright, pure eyes for a long moment. She smiled slightly and nodded. “Alright, I’ll tell you. But tell me to stop if it gets boring.”
Lin Mo immediately perked up like a little rabbit, her ears practically twitching as she stared intently, listening with undivided attention.
“The Xue Group’s snack brand uses several contract manufacturing plants. Each plant has its own distributors and raw material suppliers depending on the product line. In total, several hundred businesses are linked to the brand, and now they are all seeking compensation from my company. Meanwhile, an international conglomerate—a long-time competitor—is fanning the flames from behind, poaching our staff and hijacking our channels. That’s the current situation. My reason for being in Southeast Asia is to investigate our factories and figure out exactly which production line went wrong.”
The long explanation left Lin Mo dazed. She felt like she had listened but understood nothing. She stammered, “What… contract plants? International conglomerate? Production lines?”
Xue Luhe rubbed her head with a helpless smile. “That’s why I said you don’t need to worry about these things.”
Lin Mo pouted and slumped back in her seat, dazed. She didn’t even hear Xue Luhe speaking to her for a while. After a long silence, just as Xue Luhe finished tidying up to head out, Lin Mo suddenly asked:
“Shouldn’t it be simple to find the production line? Whichever product the consumer ate and got sick from, that’s the one you check!”
Xue Luhe paused, then laughed. “You’re still thinking about it? But there are over a dozen different snacks involved this time. Each was produced on a different line, yet other snacks produced at the same time on those lines were fine. So now we’re screening the raw material suppliers, cross-referencing dates and times. If we can find a commonality between those dozen products, only then will we have real progress.”
Lin Mo’s mouth fell open. She hadn’t realized it would be that complicated. “But so many people online are being led to attack you. What are you going to do?”
Xue Luhe arched an eyebrow, a dashing smile appearing on her face. “Let them talk. I’ve never cared about haters. Besides, I know that behind this narrative, Xi Shen has partnered with that international group. He’s desperately manufacturing public outrage, trying to use PR to crush me. But the truth is the truth; it doesn’t favor the loudest voice. As long as I’m in the right and I have the strength, it doesn’t matter.”
Lin Mo listened with rising respect. “That’s incredible…”
Xue Luhe stood up, picking up a small golden gift box and casually tossing it from hand to hand. The box tumbled through the air, but Xue Luhe caught it effortlessly every time.
“When I first inherited the Xue Group, I faced storms much bigger than this and survived. Now that I have you, there’s no reason I can’t get over this hurdle. Relax and enjoy your vacation. Next stop: the Night Safari!”
Feeling emotional, Lin Mo followed silently as they walked out. The trolley full of gifts was being handled by staff, sent back to the safety of Xue Luhe’s car.
At the Night Safari, tourists enter animal habitats in vehicles to view predators and exotic creatures through the windows. It’s a favorite spot for visitors. On the bus, Xue Luhe gave Lin Mo a brief introduction before asking with a light smile:
“How is our Xia Xue doing?”
The word “our” felt like a small brush stroking Lin Mo’s heart, leaving it itchy and tingling with goosebumps.
“Xia Xue is at home. The nurse and vet you hired go there every other day to replenish her food and water. I also gave Xiao Yuan my keys so she can check in whenever she’s free. She’s fine.”
Xue Luhe’s gaze turned distant, her voice nostalgic. “I haven’t seen Xia Xue in a month. I wonder what she looks like now… she must be a big girl by now!”
Lin Mo burst out laughing. “How is that possible? She’s still the same, maybe just a bit bigger with more fur. They don’t turn into ‘big girls’ that fast.”
Xue Luhe turned her face, her eyes dancing with a teasing glint. “She really is like a child shared between the two of us.”
Lin Mo’s cheeks flushed at the flirtation, but refusing to be outdone, she looked Xue Luhe in the eye and said righteously: “If that were our child and you stayed away for over a month, I’d definitely divorce you! I refuse to deal with ‘widowed parenting’!”
Xue Luhe couldn’t help but laugh, her lips curving high in a bright, joyous smile. “Don’t worry, wifey. If we really had a child, I’d resign.”
Lin Mo was genuinely startled. She hadn’t expected a casual joke to elicit such a strong reaction. She quickly asked, “Why would you resign? You’re doing so well at your job, wouldn’t that be a waste?”
Xue Luhe simply said softly, “Nothing compares to you and the child.”
Lin Mo: “…You’re talking as if we already have one.”
Please, according to the original contract, we’re supposed to divorce in a few months! But right now, Lin Mo didn’t dare mention divorce.
They had chartered a private tour vehicle. As they entered the predator zone, tigers and lions sat or lay by the roadside, leisurely ignoring the tourists. They were clearly well-traveled.
Lin Mo was terrified that if she brought up divorce, Xue Luhe would just toss her out of the car to feed the tigers. Although the “new” Xue Luhe seemed reformed, Lin Mo had a vivid imagination. She felt that the current Xue Luhe would probably throw her out, then jump out herself, so they could both end up in the tiger’s belly together.
Eek… just thinking about it gives me the creeps.
Beside her, Xue Luhe suddenly reached out and squeezed Lin Mo’s hand. “If you’re scared, don’t look. Come into my arms.”
Lin Mo looked up blankly, only to find a massive tiger standing right in front of her, staring at her through the glass!
“Holy crap!”
Lin Mo was indeed terrified. She jumped back instinctively, but in a strange lapse of logic, she reached out and covered Xue Luhe’s eyes instead of her own!
“Ahhh! What does it want? It’s so scary, is it hungry?” Lin Mo babbled while tightly covering Xue Luhe’s eyes, while her own eyes were wide, locked in a staring contest with the tiger.
Xue Luhe’s long, brush-like eyelashes fluttered against Lin Mo’s palm. Her warm breath fanned against Lin Mo’s wrist. Surprisingly, she stayed perfectly still, allowing herself to be blinded without a word.
Only when the vehicle slowly moved out of the predator zone—with the tiger following behind for a short distance as if unwilling to let them go—did Lin Mo finally breathe a sigh of relief. Her hands relaxed, and Xue Luhe was allowed to see again.
“Ah! Why did I cover your eyes? Sorry, I didn’t mean to, I was just so nervous…”
“It’s okay. You can have more of that ‘nervousness’ next time. I like it,” Xue Luhe responded with a smile, her eyes sparkling. She was in an excellent mood. She hadn’t expected Lin Mo to protect her first… did this count as Lin Mo’s recognition and reliance on her? Either way, Xue Luhe was so happy she felt like donating money to the zoo.
The vehicle reached the herbivore area, stopping to let them admire the vast grassland and the little animals scattered across it. Xue Luhe sat in her seat, smiling as she watched Lin Mo hopping around with excitement.
“Over there, the giraffe raised its head!” “Look here, the rabbits are fighting for food.” “There’s a squirrel in that tree.”
Lin Mo was busy with her phone, trying to capture every cute animal moment. She found a moment to ask: “How can you see so clearly? Are your eyes searchlights?”
Xue Luhe laughed. “Born with good vision, I can’t help it.”
Lin Mo shot her a jealous look. Looking at her one-in-a-million face and figure, she felt even more envious, turning into a total “sour lemon.”
“Seriously, I don’t know how you were born so perfect. God must have maxed out your charisma stats when He made you.”
Xue Luhe said softly, “Then God must have forgotten to give me the ability to love and be loved. It took me so long to realize what love actually is.”
Lin Mo pursed her lips and fell silent. She understood the weight of that topic. From their limited conversations and the fragments of the original story, Lin Mo knew Xue Luhe had grown up in a family so toxic it was suffocating. She had never felt love from her parents.
Her father was an arrogant sociopath; her mother was cold and selfish. Their union was a business merger with no affection. Naturally, they had no feelings for the “successor machine” they had created—Xue Luhe. But every child craves love from their parents. True or false, they often project the way their parents treated them onto their future lovers.
Xue Luhe had learned a distorted sense of control, harsh and relentless suppression, and a cold indifference to others’ inner worlds. That was exactly how she had treated Lin Mo at the start.
Lin Mo had thought about it later; Xue Luhe was actually quite pitiable. She had feelings but no idea how to express them correctly. Lin Mo’s own father in her previous world was a bit like Xue Luhe’s, but the difference was that Lin Mo’s late mother had loved her dearly, protecting her and giving her everything. So, Lin Mo knew what love was, and she had worked hard to become better.
Xue Luhe simply lacked the experience. But once she became aware of it, her natural intelligence allowed her to learn rapidly. Now, she was acting almost like a normal person—using normal means to pursue Lin Mo.
Wait, not normal. A normal person doesn’t have Xue Luhe’s foundation—wealthy, stunningly beautiful, and now developing a better personality. Who could resist that?!
The more Lin Mo thought about it, the luckier she felt. she couldn’t help but steal a glance at Xue Luhe, a sneaky smile on her face. Xue Luhe happened to be looking at her too. Their gazes met, and a sweet flower seemed to bloom in Lin Mo’s heart with a pop.
Xue Luhe said something, but Lin Mo didn’t catch it. “What did you say?”
Xue Luhe’s expression was calm and tender. “I wanted to ask if you could… sleep with me tonight. I haven’t been able to sleep for a month. Only when I’m with you can I avoid insomnia.”
Lin Mo’s ears turned red instantly. Her brain was still processing the request, but her lips had already opened impatiently: “It’s my duty!”
Xue Luhe’s smile instantly became radiant.
Lin Mo cautioned herself in her head: It’s just sleeping together. It’s not like we haven’t done it before. Don’t do anything crazy! You absolutely cannot do anything crazy!
I’m only doing this to soothe the big villain’s emotions—to make sure she eats well, drinks well, and rests well—so she won’t destroy the plot of the whole book, right?!
Even though the plot has already veered ten thousand miles off track, the original two female leads have vanished into obscurity, and Xue Luhe is getting kinder and kinder…
But after all, the big villain is still a liability! And I must be the one to eliminate that liability for the benefit of society! Yes, for the welfare of society, I must take the risk and sleep with Xue Luhe tonight!
It’s definitely not because I’m lusting after her beauty. Am I, Lin Mo, such a shallow person?!
