The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 54
Chapter 54
Xu Lu quickly found a large, well-equipped pet hospital.
The clinic was clean and warm. A handsome male doctor took the kitten from Lin Mo’s arms and placed it on the examination table. After checking it for a while, his expression became very grave.
“This kitten is too small, and it has a hereditary condition. There is a high chance it won’t survive. You should be prepared for the worst.”
Lin Mo’s face fell instantly. Xue Luhe, however, gave a slight nod.
“Run the tests first.”
After various examinations, the doctor came out with the report and showed it to Lin Mo.
“Unfortunately, it has feline distemper (panleukopenia). It has already missed the optimal window for treatment. Because it’s so young and weak, it might not make it through the week… Did you just find it? It’s likely the previous owner threw it out to let it fend for itself once they discovered the illness.”
Lin Mo fell into a heavy silence. Xue Luhe squeezed her hand worriedly and whispered, “Don’t be sad… if you like it, I’ll find the best veterinarians in the world to treat it. There’s always a way.”
Lin Mo looked at the shivering, thin-furred little white cat on the table. After a long silence, she wrapped it in a clean towel and held it to her chest.
“I’ll take it home first.”
The kitten was pitiful; once wrapped in the towel, it burrowed deep inside, its body shaking continuously until it hid its head completely.
The group returned to the car and drove back to the apartment complex. At Lin Mo’s floor, they all stopped. Xu Lu went down to Xue Luhe’s apartment, while Xue Luhe herself followed Lin Mo and Lu Ruoruo into Lin Mo’s home.
This was the first time Xue Luhe had ever entered Lin Mo’s personal space. She kept the noise of her wheelchair to a minimum, trying to lower her presence as she followed them slowly.
Lin Mo found a box for the kitten and busied herself finding bowls for food and water. Lu Ruoruo squatted beside the box, observing the kitten’s state, then looked up with concern.
“It looks so weak. It might not last long… are you really going to keep it?”
Xue Luhe opened her mouth to speak but stopped herself, looking at Lin Mo who had just come out of the kitchen with a small bowl. Lin Mo silently placed the bowl down, poured in some goat milk purchased from the clinic, and put it in the box. She squatted there for a long time.
The kitten kept its large eyes open, neither eating nor drinking, simply staring back at Lin Mo. The other two in the room didn’t dare to even breathe loudly.
After a moment, Lin Mo stood up and gestured to her guests. “Come, have a seat.”
Lu Ruoruo sat on the sofa, and Xue Luhe moved her wheelchair toward the coffee table. Lin Mo quickly brought out cups from the kitchen and poured hot tea.
“I don’t have a coffee machine. President Xue, you’ll have to bear with this.”
Lin Mo picked up her tea and took a sip, closing her eyes to savor the warmth. Xue Luhe mimicked her movements, took a sip, and smiled.
“It’s good.”
Lu Ruoruo clicked her tongue in wonder. “Tsk, President Xue… you’ve really changed. You used to be so formidable; how did you become so ‘henpecked’ now?”
Xue Luhe smiled faintly, showing no sign of offense. “Because my wife is exceptionally good.”
Lu Ruoruo covered her eyes, making a “yuck” sound, and gave Lin Mo a playful shove.
“Gosh, you two are too sweet! You should really have a proper wedding ceremony to make up for the last one. Save a bridesmaid spot for me!”
Lin Mo’s face turned bright red. Feeling flustered, she lowered her head and whispered, “Who’s having a wedding… I’m not doing that.”
As she spoke, she stole a glance at Xue Luhe, only to be caught by the other woman’s intense gaze. It felt like being pulled into a vortex; once she looked, it was hard to turn away.
Lu Ruoruo stayed for a bit longer before leaving for her nearby hotel.
Xue Luhe steered her wheelchair over to the kitten’s box. The little thing had curled into a ball and fallen asleep, leaving the water and milk untouched.
Xue Luhe turned back to Lin Mo. “How about putting it in my apartment? You can come down and see it whenever you want.”
Lin Mo shook her head, a complex emotion in her eyes.
“No need. You’re afraid I’ll be sad watching it die, right? But raising a life is like this—I can’t just enjoy the happiness it brings me without bearing the responsibility. My mother once taught me: enjoying rights and fulfilling obligations are two sides of the same coin. You can’t have one without the other.”
Xue Luhe stared at Lin Mo in silence for a long time after hearing this, her gaze appearing somewhat dazed. Lin Mo grew nervous under the scrutiny and asked, “What’s wrong? Did I say something incorrect?”
Xue Luhe shook her head, her eyes deepening. “What you said is exactly right. It just reminded me… of many things I did wrong.”
Lin Mo blinked, not quite following. “What are you talking about? What did you do wrong before?”
Xue Luhe sighed, her slender fingers gripping the edge of her wheelchair. She spoke in a low voice.
“When I treated you as a plaything before, my mindset was fundamentally flawed. You are a living person. I enjoyed the vitality, life, and joy you brought me, but I was unwilling to bear the responsibility of being your partner. I used to just think I was a jerk, but at this moment…”
Xue Luhe stopped, seemingly finding it difficult to continue. She looked pained and evasive. She pressed a button, turning her wheelchair 180 degrees so her back was to Lin Mo.
Lin Mo was bewildered, staring at Xue Luhe’s back. She felt like she understood, yet didn’t.
A magnetic voice, full of weary emotion, flowed through the room.
“In this moment, I realized that the person I used to be was actually a coward.”
Lin Mo let out an “Ah,” her mind struggling to process this.
Xue Luhe calling herself a coward? Who would believe that? Xi Shen, whose company was snatched; Wang Ling, who was scolded into submission; and all the business owners ruined by the Xue Group—none of them would agree!
Xue Luhe seemed to have opened a floodgate. With her back to Lin Mo, she spoke the words most difficult to utter, and the rest began to flow out.
“In truth, I am a coward. I… I never dared to open my heart to accept anyone because I was afraid. I was afraid of people discovering that I am ordinary. So I became abrasive, hyper-competent, cold, and selfish. I armed myself to the teeth. But even so, I couldn’t escape my inner weakness. Lin Mo, if you hadn’t appeared, I might never have touched my true heart in my entire life. Do you know? It’s only now that I’ve discovered what my true heart is…”
As she poured out these words from the depths of her soul, Xue Luhe grew more agitated, her speaking pace quickening. But at the final sentence, she suddenly choked up and went silent.
Lin Mo peered around and saw that the slender figure in the wheelchair seemed to be experiencing a spiritual tremor. Her shoulders and back were tense and shaking—an uncontrollable trembling that reached her very fingertips.
Lin Mo didn’t quite understand the specific point of Xue Luhe’s sudden breakdown. She felt like she was playing the role of a psychologist in a TV drama, but she had no professional skills!
What should I do? She felt that if she didn’t do something soon, Xue Luhe might actually start sobbing right then and there. The thought of Xue Luhe crying piteously made Lin Mo feel a bit protective, yet also a tiny bit excited.
Xue Luhe’s shoulders continued to shake as she lowered her head. It seemed the next words would destroy her entire resolve.
“My true… inner… deepest need…”
She suppressed her voice, squeezing the words out one by one. Lin Mo could tell how much pain she was in just by looking at her back.
Without thinking, Lin Mo walked over from behind and placed her hand on Xue Luhe’s hair, gently stroking and comforting her. As her fingers brushed through the cool, silky strands, Lin Mo felt something in the depths of her own heart vibrating in sync with her touch.
She couldn’t help but sigh softly. “If it’s too painful, you don’t have to say it…”
Xue Luhe shook her head violently. Her fingers on the armrests were pressed so hard the knuckles turned white, her nails digging into the wood.
Lin Mo worriedly tried to pry her fingers loose. “Hey, your hand is going to hurt if you do that…”
“It’s love.”
Xue Luhe, trembling all over, forced those words out. Then, as if all her strength had vanished, she slumped back into the wheelchair.
Lin Mo was filled with question marks. In her mind, she screamed: That’s it?
She wanted to scratch her head, but she responded nonetheless. “Um… I think everyone needs love. How could anyone not need it? Humans are social animals, after all.”
“Yes… everyone needs love, but I thought I didn’t. In fact, I need love more than anyone. I need to be loved—that was the reason I entered the entertainment industry. I wanted to be loved by many, many fans and viewers… I also need a lover, but I was too cowardly to love someone before. Until half a year ago.”
Xue Luhe finished speaking at high speed and suddenly spun the wheelchair around.
She looked up, her cheeks flushed with excitement, her eyes as bright as volcanic lava—full of passion and longing. She stared dead into Lin Mo’s eyes.
Lin Mo was startled. This didn’t look like Xue Luhe at all! How could she be so agitated, so ecstatic? She looked like a giant dragon that had suddenly found a long-lost treasure, radiating a faint, dangerous aura.
“Lin Mo, I love you.”
The air froze instantly. The world lost its sound and its color. The sky seemed to flip, and the Milky Way rushed down, carrying a rolling heatwave into Lin Mo’s ears.
Starting from her ears and reaching her heart, Lin Mo felt a sudden, rhythmic thrumming. Her eardrums felt full, and all the blood rushed to her head.
She didn’t react at first. After a few seconds, she felt as if she had been scorched by magma, and the heat made her want to jump.
The floor heating must be too high… Southerners aren’t used to this… I’ll have to tell the landlord to turn it down… and the kitten needs a bed… and a syringe to feed it medicine… What did the woman in front of me just say? Did I hear wrong? Am I dreaming?
Ah, why are her lips moving again? What is she saying? My eardrums are too full; I can’t hear a thing.
Lin Mo licked her dry lips and asked after a long pause:
“What… did… you say?”
As she asked, Lin Mo couldn’t help but lift her hand and scratch her ear with her pinky finger. Immediately, she felt a wave of regret.
Why did I do something so ungraceful like scratching my ear at such a serious moment! My brain must be rusty!
However, Xue Luhe was simply flushed, looking like the most beautiful red rose in the world blooming before Lin Mo’s eyes. Her gaze held only Lin Mo’s face.
She waited quietly for Lin Mo to finish scratching her ear, then repeated it—earnestly, at a moderate speed and volume:
“Lin Mo, I love you.”
Whoosh… heart explosion.
