The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 50
Chapter 50
With that single sentence, Lin Mo broke into a cold sweat—purely out of being startled by Xue Luhe.
After dropping that highly provocative line, Xue Luhe didn’t pursue the topic further. She simply let out a sigh and turned her attention back to the television.
Lin Mo followed suit, pretending to watch the show, though her ears and cheeks continued to burn with a lingering, pulsing heat.
They watched for an unknown amount of time. The moment the episode ended, Lin Mo immediately stood up, ready to take her leave.
“Um, I’ll be heading out now. I’ll come see you again when I’m free. Take good care of your injury, okay?”
Xue Luhe looked up at her. Because she was in a wheelchair, she always had to look up at people, which lent her an air of vulnerability.
It also made her gaze seem unprecedentedly soft.
The beauty mark at the corner of her eye, faint as a wisp of smoke, added a touch of allure, making her eyes seem as if they were veiled in mist.
She asked in a low voice: “When will you be free again?”
Lin Mo’s heart skipped a beat. She felt that the look in this woman’s eyes was becoming impossible to resist; it made her want to make promises she might not be able to keep.
“It… it depends on my schedule. Mainly because Lu Ruoruo is coming to visit me in a couple of days, and work has been incredibly busy…”
Xue Luhe cut through her rambling excuses and asked directly:
“Can you spend Christmas Eve with me?”
Christmas Eve was still half a month away.
Lin Mo weighed it in her mind for a long time, her eyes darting around before she finally said:
“I’ll try my best.”
A hint of disappointment flickered across Xue Luhe’s brow, but her response was perfectly dignified:
“Good. I will make the arrangements in advance.”
Lin Mo instinctively declined again:
“Don’t bother with ‘arrangements.’ You’ll definitely spend a lot of money if you handle it. Let’s just have a meal at home when the time comes…”
Xue Luhe’s voice dropped an octave, her gaze deepening:
“I said, I will arrange it.”
“…Oh.”
Lin Mo realized it was useless to resist. Xue Luhe’s stubborn streak was showing again—she was as obstinate as a contrarian, dead set on her own way.
Standing by the door, Lin Mo waved her hand: “I’m off then.”
Xue Luhe steered her wheelchair forward, insisting on helping to open the door. Lin Mo had to step aside to let her perform the task.
Lin Mo had already walked out of the apartment and reached the elevator. When she looked back, Xue Luhe was still sitting in her wheelchair, watching her.
Lin Mo smiled and waved again: “Go back inside!”
Xue Luhe didn’t respond. Just as Lin Mo was about to step into the elevator, she suddenly said:
“I’m already starting to miss you…”
The elevator doors closed, leaving Lin Mo stunned.
She hadn’t misheard that, had she?
Could Xue Luhe actually say such cheesy, cliché sweet nothings…?
But, it really was sweet.
Lin Mo covered her mouth with her hand and let out a secret giggle.
Before bed, Lin Mo received the customary “goodnight” text from Xue Luhe:
“Goodnight. The food was delicious today; I liked it very much.”
The corners of Lin Mo’s mouth curled up involuntarily as she typed back:
“I could tell you liked it. I barely got any; you ate it all!”
Xue Luhe replied quickly: “I’m sorry, I couldn’t help myself.”
Lin Mo’s smile widened: “What’s there to be sorry about? A cook loves nothing more than seeing someone eat heartily. It means my efforts were recognized. I’m happy too.”
Xue Luhe: “You don’t need to put in effort to be good enough. I have always recognized your worth.”
Lin Mo: “That’s not what you said back at the villa…”
Xue Luhe: “…I’m sorry. I really was a jerk back then.”
Lin Mo flopped onto her bed, clutching her phone. Her smile faded slightly as she thought before typing: “Knowing one’s mistakes and changing them is the greatest virtue.”
Xue Luhe: “I hope I can change into the person you like.”
Looking at that message, Lin Mo suddenly didn’t know how to respond.
After a long silence, another message came from Xue Luhe:
“Goodnight. I look forward to our next meeting.”
Lin Mo hesitated before pressing: “Goodnight.”
Lu Ruoruo’s flight arrived two days later. She took a taxi straight from the airport to the coffee shop where Lin Mo worked.
Coincidentally, the shop was hosting a music party that day. It was incredibly crowded. Lu Ruoruo was exhausted just from squeezing her way in. Unable to reach the staff area, she called Lin Mo:
“Mo Mo, hurry up and come get me!”
Lin Mo happened to be at another branch, so she had to tell Lu Ruoruo to find a seat while she rushed back.
Dragging her massive pink suitcase, Lu Ruoruo went through a lot of trouble to find a seat. She ordered a latte with extra milk and sugar and sipped it slowly.
The shop was a melting pot of people, all listening to a folk singer on the small central stage. This was part of the music party—inviting underground folk singers with a bit of a following to warm up the crowd.
The singer on stage was a handsome guy. While singing, he suddenly pointed toward Lu Ruoruo:
“Beautiful lady, why don’t you come up and sing with me!”
The crowd began to cheer. Lu Ruoruo blushed, hesitated for a while, and eventually made her way to the stage amidst the shouting.
The handsome, bohemian folk singer reached out, took Lu Ruoruo’s hand, and led her onto the stage. He held her shoulder as she sat beside him, and he continued to sing in a half-supporting, half-embracing posture.
Just as Lu Ruoruo was basking in this romantic atmosphere, her gaze sharpened. From her elevated position on stage, she could see a figure lingering outside.
It was actually Xi Shen!
Xi Shen was alone, without bodyguards or assistants, standing in the cold winter street in a long coat, pacing outside the corner wall of the café.
What kind of drama is this?
Lu Ruoruo immediately shook off the handsome singer’s hand, hopped off the stage, and ran back to grab her phone to tip off Lin Mo:
“I see Xi Shen outside your coffee shop. She’s wearing a deep red coat and pacing back and forth, but she won’t come in! Be careful when you get back; she’s standing in a blind spot you can’t see from inside.”
Lin Mo was already in a taxi. Receiving the message, she pondered for a moment before sending a text to Xue Luhe:
“Xi Shen is outside the coffee shop. She might want to talk. Do you know what this is about?”
Less than a minute later, Xue Luhe called:
“Lin Mo, don’t worry. I’m coming over right now.”
Lin Mo didn’t think it was such a big deal that it required Xue Luhe to come personally. she hurried to say:
“There’s no need. I can handle it myself, and it’s not convenient for you.”
Xue Luhe’s voice sounded anxious: “No, I need to ensure your safety!”
Lin Mo felt a strange mix of emotions. She mumbled into the phone:
“In the past, the person who made me feel the most unsafe… was you.”
The other end of the line went silent. After a long pause, Xue Luhe let out a heavy sigh:
“Which is why I will spend a long time trying to make it up to you and protecting your safety.”
Lin Mo involuntarily nodded, her voice softening: “Mm. Sometimes you do make me feel quite safe now.”
Xue Luhe chuckled lowly, her voice deep and beautiful like a cello.
“Mm. Then I’ll keep trying. You just… give me more chances.”
“Mm,” Lin Mo replied.
A silence fell between them until Lin Mo broke it: “I’m almost there, I’ll hang up now.”
Xue Luhe: “Stay safe. See you in a bit.”
Lin Mo: “Mm, see you in a bit.”
Hanging up, Lin Mo looked at the call log. The name “Xue Luhe” had never looked as pleasant as it did now.
The taxi soon pulled up outside the shop. Lin Mo paid and got out. She looked around but didn’t see Xi Shen anywhere, making her wonder if Lu Ruoruo had been mistaken.
It was freezing outside, so she hurried inside, only to see Lu Ruoruo sitting in the middle of the stage, exchanging flirtatious glances with the folk singer.
Lin Mo rolled her eyes. She waited patiently for the singer to finish the song, then frantically gestured to Lu Ruoruo:
“Hurry up and get down here!”
Lu Ruoruo shared a few more lingering looks with the singer before stepping down, looking thrilled:
“Mo Mo! I think I’ve found true love. He’s so romantic! So charming and so handsome!”
Lin Mo ruthlessly shattered her fantasy: “He’s married.”
Lu Ruoruo instantly deflated like a popped balloon, sitting dejectedly in a chair, motionless.
Just as Lin Mo was about to ask where Xi Shen was, she heard a familiar, gentle voice:
“Lin Mo?”
Lin Mo’s whole body stiffened. She turned around, and sure enough, it was Xi Shen.
Xi Shen wore a well-tailored, high-end coat over a turtleneck knit sweater, which accentuated her tall, firm posture. The gentle, refined air between her brows was as pleasant as a spring breeze.
It had been a long time since Lin Mo had seen her. Looking at her again, she couldn’t help but marvel—Xi Shen truly was the fated wife of the original female lead. Her beauty was on par with Xue Luhe’s, though she looked somewhat haggard.
Seeing her turn around, Xi Shen broke into a smile, her voice sincere:
“It’s been a long time. How have you been? Can we find a private booth to talk?”
She also nodded toward Lu Ruoruo:
“Ruoruo, you should join us too. I didn’t expect you to be visiting Lin Mo as well. It’s quite a coincidence.”
Lu Ruoruo gave an awkward smile and tugged at Lin Mo’s sleeve.
Confident, Lin Mo opened the door to a private booth: “Let’s use this room. I’ll go get drinks.”
Lu Ruoruo hurriedly stood up and grabbed Lin Mo’s arm: “I’ll go too, I’ll go too! Um, Xi Shen, what do you want to drink? I’ll get it for you.”
Xi Shen merely smiled, her hands folded into a triangle on the table. Her eyes were unfathomable:
“A black Americano is fine. Thank you.”
Once Lin Mo and Lu Ruoruo closed the booth door and stepped out, Lu Ruoruo took the chance to whisper in Lin Mo’s ear:
“What do you think she wants to say? Do you have a plan? That thing from before—did you ever find out for sure if it was really Xi Shen?”
Lin Mo had only given Lu Ruoruo a detailed account of Xi Shen’s past actions right before she arrived. This had finally cured Lu Ruoruo of her desire to match-make the two, and she now found Xi Shen quite terrifying.
Lin Mo placed the order with her colleagues. The baristas started working. Since it was busy, there was a queue, so Lin Mo and Lu Ruoruo chatted by the bar.
Lin Mo pinched her cheek to make herself look more alert:
“It must be her. I’m definitely going to confront her and clear the air. I won’t be a lamb for the slaughter. I don’t know what she wants this time, but likely she wants to undermine my relationship with Xue Luhe or even use me as a spy…”
Lu Ruoruo thought for a while, then shook her head: “No, no. With your IQ, being a spy in front of Xue Luhe would be exposed in minutes.”
“Regardless of what Xi Shen wants, I am resolutely not agreeing to anything!”
As they were talking, Xi Shen’s voice suddenly came from behind Lin Mo:
“Do you really hate me that much? Since when did it start?”
Lin Mo jumped in shock and turned back to see Xi Shen’s dark, heavy gaze.
