The Movie Queen’s Charming Little Wife: Feigning Amnesia Online - Chapter 31
Chapter 31
Autumn in the North had already begun to carry a hint of chill. The trees along the boulevard were lush, yet their centers were being dyed with touches of gold.
It was noon, and sunlight spilled through the gaps in the leaves, scattering mottled spots on the ground that swayed gently with the wind.
The gentle woman in front of Lin Mo crouched down. Without any hesitation, she reached out to retrieve the shoe stuck in the crevice between the stones.
Lin Mo was stunned. For a moment, she didn’t know what to do. In her urgency, she blurted out:
“Hey, hey, don’t touch—”
On the other end of the phone, Xue Luhe’s puzzled voice came through:
“Don’t touch what? What happened to you?”
This reminded Lin Mo of her situation. She said into the phone:
“I’m fine. Don’t contact me again, and don’t look for me!”
With that, Lin Mo immediately hung up. She stood up, intending to stop the beautiful woman, only to find that the stranger had already retrieved the high heel and was handing it back to her.
Lin Mo took the shoe blankly, forgetting to put it on, standing there with one bare foot.
“Put your shoe on, little sister. Don’t be sad.”
The woman smiled, her expression tender. Her eyes and brow held a mature beauty tempered by time, making people feel an instinctive sense of closeness to her.
Lin Mo hurried to put her shoe on and took two steps. She wiped the tears from her face, feeling terribly embarrassed. Keeping her head down, she said:
“Thank you…”
The woman observed Lin Mo for a moment, then offered a smiling invitation:
“I work at a coffee shop nearby. Would you like to go there and rest for a bit?”
Lin Mo was surprised but grateful. She had applied light makeup earlier, and now her face was likely a mess of smeared foundation. Finding a place to freshen up was exactly what she needed.
Seeing her nod in grateful agreement, the woman smiled and led the way, introducing herself:
“What’s your name? I’m Qing Jing. Qing as in ‘the lady is fair,’ and Jing as in ‘simple thorn hairpin’.”
Lin Mo followed her, commenting sincerely:
“That name sounds so literary and beautiful. My name is Lin Mo. Lin as in ‘forest,’ and Mo as in ‘the foam on the water’.”
Qing Jing smiled as they rounded a corner:
“Your name sounds very light and ethereal. What happened just now? Why were you crying by the road? Did someone bully you?”
Lin Mo couldn’t bring herself to be guarded against such a gentle older sister. Starting from her arrival in West City for the interview, she poured out her entire experience.
Halfway through the story, they arrived at a minimalist, fragrant coffee shop. Qing Jing interrupted Lin Mo’s passionate narration and said with a smile:
“What would you like to drink? Oh, right—you definitely need something sweet right now.”
She turned to the barista behind the counter:
“One cappuccino, make it extra sweet!”
The barista replied with a smile: “Sure thing, Sister Qing!”
Lin Mo blinked. “What do you do here? He called you ‘Sister’.”
Qing Jing laughed. “I’m the manager. So don’t worry, I can afford to treat you to a cup of coffee.”
Lin Mo let out a heartfelt exclamation:
“Wow! That’s amazing! You’ve realized my teenage dream! When I was in school, almost every girl wanted to open a coffee shop!”
Qing Jing teased, “A dream is just a dream. Once you actually do it, you realize it’s exhausting and busy. Generally, girls are better off not trying it.”
Lin Mo blinked. “So… you’re not a ‘general’ girl?”
Qing Jing smiled but didn’t answer directly. Instead, she asked:
“That supervisor said he wanted you to go out drinking, and then?”
Lin Mo slapped the table and vividly described how she punished the “fat pig” supervisor, gesturing wildly and speaking with great fervor.
Qing Jing clapped for her, smiling, then asked:
“Then isn’t that a good thing? Why were you crying on the roadside?”
Lin Mo: “…Well, I was a bit shaken… actually, I’m not that fragile. I probably just didn’t sleep well last night. Really, really!”
At that moment, the barista brought over two cups. One was a rich cappuccino placed before Lin Mo, and the other was a plain black coffee for Qing Jing.
“Taste it. Right now, you should eat more sweets.”
Accompanied by Qing Jing’s gentle voice, Lin Mo took a sip. She felt her entire body warm up from the inside out. All the frustration and pain from earlier vanished instantly.
She couldn’t help but grin. “Mm, it’s delicious! Truly delicious!”
Qing Jing looked at her and pointed to the corner of her own mouth. “There’s some coffee foam right here.”
Lin Mo wiped it with a napkin, then stirred her coffee with a small spoon, her expression turning somber.
“What should I do? I came to West City to find a job, but I didn’t find one, and I’ve already spent a lot on hotels… Where am I supposed to go next…”
Hearing this, Qing Jing took a sip of her black coffee, looked up, and smiled:
“Do you like West City?”
Lin Mo nodded vigorously. She really liked the food and the local atmosphere here.
Qing Jing pondered for a moment, then looked up with a smile:
“I happen to have a vacancy in my shop. If you don’t mind, would you like to try?”
Lin Mo was startled. “But I don’t know how to make coffee!”
Qing Jing’s lips curled into a smile, seemingly amused by her silliness. “No, I’m asking you to be the marketing planner for my shop. Usually, you’d work in the back office. The salary is average, but it includes three meals a day and unlimited coffee and desserts.”
Lin Mo looked around. The shop wasn’t too crowded, the aroma was rich, and the greenery outside the window created a serene environment. It felt like a perfect place to recuperate.
Moreover, the location seemed quite secluded. Even if Xue Luhe found her way to West City, it would take her some time to find this specific spot… but this was quite different from her original career goals, wasn’t it?
Qing Jing had already turned to grab a stack of documents from the counter. She handed them over:
“These are our shop’s materials and some details regarding the job. You can take them back and look them over. No need to rush into a decision.”
Lin Mo took the papers and flipped through them. The more she read, the better it seemed. Although this specific shop was small, they had several chain locations. This was the head office, responsible for marketing planning for all branches in the city.
As she browsed, Qing Jing sat across from her, silently smiling as she drank her coffee, occasionally looking up to chat with the barista. The lazy autumn sunlight filtered through the diamond-paned windows, creating a sense of “quiet years” and peace.
Lin Mo looked up at Qing Jing and felt the woman grew more beautiful the more she looked at her. Of course, no one could compare to Xue Luhe or Xi Shen in pure beauty, but Qing Jing had a unique charm refined by time.
“Let’s grab a meal? I know a great local noodle shop nearby.”
Qing Jing stood up to invite her, and Lin Mo naturally followed. The food was indeed incredible. The bright red chili oil coated every strand of the chewy, hand-pulled noodles. One bowl later, Lin Mo was so full she could barely move.
She wasn’t familiar with the area, so she followed Qing Jing back to the cafe and spent the afternoon there, reading and drinking coffee. Time passed so beautifully that she didn’t even want to check her phone.
She knew that after hanging up on Xue Luhe earlier, there must have been a storm on the other side. She didn’t want to face it.
Xue Luhe, Xue Luhe… if she really likes me, can’t she just let go? Hasn’t she heard that “to love is to let go”?
Lin Mo let out a long sigh. Qing Jing, who was wiping cups at the counter, heard it and turned around with a smile:
“That sigh sounded complicated. Is there a story? Care to share?”
Lin Mo desperately wanted to expose Xue Luhe’s true nature, but she didn’t dare. She finally had someone to talk to, and she didn’t want to scare them away.
She beckoned Qing Jing over. Once the woman sat down, Lin Mo lowered her voice:
“Back in my hometown, I have a wife in a legal sense. But we only have a contract marriage, agreed to divorce after two years. But unexpectedly, after one year, I woke up one morning and found I had amnesia!”
Qing Jing showed a look of surprise, her brow furrowed in confusion:
“But you look very smart. You don’t seem like someone with amnesia?”
“…Thanks for the compliment. Anyway, don’t worry about the details—I just have it. Before the amnesia, I did some bad things, and as a result, that wife of mine actually committed domestic violence and put me under house arrest in my room!”
“Huh? Then this wife of yours is a bit too…”
“Exactly! Totally a psychopath, right? She’s not normal! I was so scared every day. She’d even stand by my bed at night watching me while I slept. I’d be scared to death the moment I opened my eyes! Fortunately, I was rescued by a friend not long after. But do you know what? After I was rescued, that crazy ex-wife of mine actually started stalking me! She bought the apartment right across from the one I rented! She even installed cameras in my room!”
“My goodness, you’re so pitiful to be entangled with someone like that…”
“Right? It’s hard to imagine that in this day and age, there’s still someone so lawless. The key is she’s very powerful; even if she goes to the police station, she gets out easily. I really had no choice but to run away in the middle of the night to West City.”
“If she’s that powerful, she’ll surely find you soon. What will you do then? Go back with her?”
“Impossible! I’d rather be a shattered jade than a whole tile. Even if blood spatters three feet, I’ll never go back! Although she’s quite nice when she’s not being a psycho—beautiful and charming—who can stand it when she flips? House arrest and domestic violence on loop. I’m not made of iron, and I’m not a masochist!”
“You’re so pitiful… Can’t you communicate with her? Tell her you don’t like this.”
Lin Mo beat her chest, looking like a frustrated baboon:
“I’ve told her eight hundred times! I told her not to look for me, that I don’t want to see her, and to stop doing those crazy things. But is it useful? Not at all! She’s still a psycho, still chasing me like a madwoman. I feel like in a while, she’s going to track me to West City!”
Qing Jing looked worried, thought for a moment, and then comforted her:
“It’s okay. I think if she cares about you that much, she won’t do anything too extreme. Even if she catches up, the world is big—you can leave again at any time.”
Lin Mo gloomily downed some coffee, feeling like a goldfish in a bowl. No matter how much she splashed, she couldn’t jump out. But even a goldfish should have its own life!
Lin Mo went back to her hotel. After careful consideration, she went back to the coffee shop the next morning:
“Can I apply for that marketing planning job you mentioned yesterday?”
Qing Jing was decorating desserts. Hearing this, she happily clapped the powdered sugar off her hands:
“After talking so much yesterday, I feel you’re a serious, passionate, and thoughtful person. You have great charisma. No need for an interview—just start working! You’re hired today. You can just follow me and learn.”
Lin Mo felt a sudden surge of pride. So I am that excellent! Qing Jing was truly a discerning mentor. She promised herself she would work hard and achieve great results!
Ideally, she wanted to show Xue Luhe that she could do just fine without her!
Qing Jing washed and dried her hands, came out from behind the counter, and led Lin Mo to the small office in the back. She gave her a computer and a lot of materials.
The office was clean and tidy. Besides Lin Mo, there were two young girls and a young man. The girls handled finance, and the man was the designer.
“Our company is still small, so you’ll have to handle marketing, copywriting, and occasionally go out to check the market. Do you prefer a fixed salary or commission-based? We can discuss it, but it won’t be less than 6,000 per month, with quarterly raises.”
Lin Mo had never met such an easygoing boss. Of course, she hadn’t met many bosses to begin with—Xue Luhe and Xi Shen were both the type to make subordinates suffer. In comparison, Qing Jing was perfect. Who wouldn’t want a gentle “big sister” boss?
She smiled brightly: “Great! Whatever is convenient for you. Of course, the higher the better, hahaha!”
Qing Jing introduced Lin Mo to the others. Everyone was shy and sweet, greeting Lin Mo softly. The atmosphere was incredibly harmonious.
The first day passed by reviewing materials. For lunch, they ate homemade pasta made by Qing Jing—creamy bacon and asparagus. The taste was heavenly.
At 5:30 PM, the office staff left on time, while the coffee shop entered its evening rush. Those who wanted to stay and eat with the staff could. The dinner featured three types of sandwiches, various soups, five kinds of ice cream and desserts, and several lovely waitresses in aprons. It was a divine setup!
After dinner, Lin Mo patted her full stomach and grabbed a waitress she had just met:
“Do you know? This is the most peaceful meal I’ve had in a long time. It’s so delicious I feel like I could fly!”
The waitress gave her a pitying look. “This is just our daily staff meal! You poor girl, you must have had a hard life before… It’s okay. In our shop, just say what you want to eat and our chef will make it! If the chef can’t, our boss will!”
Qing Jing, who was passing by, heard this and turned her head with a smile:
“If you want me to cook, you’ll have to work hard! Of course, a little slacking off is fine too. Everyone’s happiness is what matters most!”
Lin Mo was moved to tears. “Truly a god-tier boss!”
These simple, happy days actually continued peacefully, one by one.
Lin Mo’s workload was just right—neither overwhelming nor boring. Her tasks involved understanding industry trends, researching marketing cases, creating event plans, and brainstorming with other shop managers. After finalizing a plan, she worked with the designer on materials and supervised the implementation at the shops.
Lin Mo found the work interesting. Every day she went to work with passion. The delicious food, unlimited coffee, and tranquil environment made her forget all her troubles.
When she video-chatted with Lu Ruoruo, she lamented:
“Working is actually such a happy thing! I highly recommend you find a job too! The sense of fulfillment and satisfaction from work… you can’t get that from buying any luxury brand! I’m so happy!”
Lu Ruoruo gave her a speechless look and then asked:
“Are you still in contact with Xue Luhe? Why has she disappeared lately?”
Lin Mo paused. Hearing that name felt like it was from another lifetime. Since the day she hung up the phone while crying by the road, Xue Luhe hadn’t called again.
She had only sent one WeChat message: Take care of yourself.
And then, nothing. No calls, no messages, and no mysterious appearances.
Although Lin Mo didn’t understand the psycho’s thought process, she was happy not to be disturbed. She told Lu Ruoruo:
“In short, I’m living so happily without her! I haven’t thought about her much for days.”
Lu Ruoruo pondered for a moment and then said:
“There’s something I don’t know if I should tell you… but seeing as you’ve moved on and are doing well, you should be able to handle it… Xi Shen and Mu Fei are dating. Everyone in the circle knows, it just hasn’t been announced publicly yet.”
Lin Mo felt no ripples in her heart. She almost wanted to laugh. Isn’t this the normal plot progression?
The female lead “Seme” and “Uke” were bound to be together, though they’d surely endure various heartbreaks and misunderstandings. Them being together was expected; they’d probably break up soon anyway.
She didn’t let this show, however, and just smiled brightly:
“Wow! They really are together! I always thought they were a great match. They were meant to be. I wish them a hundred years of happiness!”
Lu Ruoruo: “You don’t have to force a smile like that.”
Lin Mo’s eyes widened. “How am I forcing it? Which eye saw me forcing a smile? This is clearly a smile of blessing and joy!”
Lu Ruoruo pursed her lips and chose not to comment. After a while, she said curiously:
“Actually, many people guessed that Xue Luhe was the one more deeply in love with Mu Fei. But surprisingly, she didn’t come out to block them this time. She seems to have vanished into thin air for almost a month.”
She looked thoughtful, then suddenly said:
“It was right after you left that Xue Luhe stopped appearing!”
Lin Mo was speechless. She didn’t care about Xue Luhe at all; she just wanted to know what was for lunch tomorrow.
However, that night, after falling asleep in her new rental, Lin Mo actually dreamed of Xue Luhe. And it was a sensual, exciting… “colorful” dream.
In the dream, Xue Luhe wore a red dress, the hem fluttering as she pinned Lin Mo down firmly…
This and that, that and this… in short, when Lin Mo woke up the next morning, not only had she not slept well, but her back even ached a bit.
Lin Mo couldn’t figure it out. Finally, she could only conclude: I’ve been single for too long; even that psycho Xue is starting to look attractive.
She sat in the small office looking miserable, completely unaware that a special guest had arrived at the shop today.
The guest wore a hat and a scarf with a black coat. She kept her head down and sat in the furthest corner, almost facing the wall. But her visible hands were fair and slender, with neat, rounded nails—excessively beautiful.
Several employees noticed her. They winked at each other and whispered, debating which celebrity it might be. Several celebrities had visited before in similar disguises, so the staff were used to it and wouldn’t usually give a second look to someone who was merely “good-looking.”
But today’s guest, just sitting in the corner playing with a glass, had her long hair tied low and a perfectly elegant jawline. Even without seeing her face, one could sense a strange, magnetic attraction radiating from her.
The staff took turns going over to ask if she needed anything or to introduce promotions. However, the person simply shook her head to every suggestion, silent and without looking up.
This only added to her mystery. The staff grew more excited. Finally, someone recognized her from her silhouette:
“That looks like… that incredibly famous Movie Queen, doesn’t it?” “Is it Xue Luhe? Is there a photo? A full-body one!” “Omg, it really looks like her! Especially those hands—there are only a few people in the entertainment industry with hands that beautiful who don’t wear nail polish.” “Xue Luhe likes women! Of course she wouldn’t wear nail polish, heehee! But why would she be at our shop? Is there a filming event?”
Several staff members told the manager, Qing Jing. Qing Jing’s expression turned serious. She told everyone to keep quiet and then, putting on her manager’s uniform, approached the table.
Qing Jing wore a professional smile, her tone perfectly measured:
“Hello, Miss. Are you Miss Xue Luhe?”
This direct approach was unusual, yet strangely sincere.
The guest turned around. Looking at Qing Jing, her radiant face was staggeringly beautiful! It was indeed her. It could only be her.
Qing Jing sighed inwardly but kept the smile on her face.
“If you need, we can provide a private booth. It’s harder for fans to notice and offers more privacy.”
Xue Luhe didn’t speak. She just looked Qing Jing up and down before saying in a low voice:
“Sit down. I have something to ask you.”
Qing Jing’s smile remained, but her words held a edge:
“Hello. I’d like to tell you that when making a request of others, one should say ‘please’.”
Xue Luhe was silent for a moment, then added stiffly:
“Fine. Please sit down and answer some questions for me, alright?”
Only then did Qing Jing sit.
Before Xue Luhe could speak, she suddenly turned her head toward the bar counter.
Behind the counter, a petite and lovely figure was playing around with someone.
“Lin Mo! Why are you stealing my new recipe again! Put it down!”
“Chef Liu, you develop so many new things every day, just let me have a bite! Just one! Love you so much, muah!”
